Byzantium is the shadow that remains of the old Roman Empire. It is a mere shadow because despite retaining the civilised ways of the Roman legacy, the Byzantines have done little to further it. In fact, it is their reverence of the old ways that has brought the empire to a point of stagnation, in a world that has gradually kept moving on. The differences between the thinking in Byzantium and the west were most profoundly highlighted with the Great Schism, the division of Christendom.

Despite boasting the world's trade capital and home of Orthodox Christianity in Constantinople, the Byzantine Empire is well past its zenith and is now in steady decline. The outer regions of the empire have been slipping from the Emperor's grasp for decades now. To the west, the Normans have taken southern Italy, and in the east the Turks have moved into Asia Minor after their decisive and terrible victory at Manzikert. The latter of these two losses was the worst defeat the Empire had suffered in its entire history. To make matters worse, general corruption, chaos and dissent has lead to some of the other provinces closer to home to rebel.

Arguably, the greatest threat to Byzantium lies in its independence from Rome. There is significant risk that the lords of the west will consider the lands of Orthodox Christianity to be fair game unless the Pope decrees otherwise. It is a true irony that Constantinople may now have to appease Rome after becoming the new capital of the Roman Empire centuries ago.

If the Byzantine Empire is to once again become the dominant power of the east again, then it will first need to reclaim its heartlands wholly before encroaching upon the borders of another power. The Byzantine legacy is long and predominantly proud, but unless the Emperor can turn things around and once again instill, it is a legacy that will soon end.

Campaign Strategy
The Byzantine Empire begins with 5 provinces under its control with castles at Corinth and Nicosia and cities at Thessalonica and Nicea and its capital city of Constantinople. Early plans for expansion involve the capture of rebel settlements to North, such as Sofia, which is very important to keep the Hungarians in check, for some reason Hungary goes for this settlement within the first few turns and if they get it, then they will have two good castles and a very rich capital to form a very solid base. So it is best to lay seige to this castle in the very first turns with the faction leader and some spearmen from Constantinople, and send the faction heir to the South East to Smyrna. Once the Byzantines have expanded sufficiently they should set their sites on the Turks to the East whilst remaining wary of Hungarians to the North and the Italian factions to the West, especially the Venetians.

The early Byzantine forces consist mainly of Byzantine Spearmen and Trebizond Archers. These are supplemented by a set of highly effective cavalry units including the Byzantine cavalry, Vardariotai and Skythikon. In the early game cavalry archers from castles will dominate feild battles against the militia infantry of Hungary and Venice. Throughout the campaign it will be the Byzantine cavalry and missile troops that will be crucial to success in battle. These troops will have to compensate for the Byzantines lack of gunpowder units late in the campaign.

Grand Campaign Objective
Hold 45 regions, including: Rome and Jerusalem.

Diplomacy
Make military alliances with Sicily and Milan (because they both want to destroy Venice), and Moors (they want the Egyptians destroyed). Stay on the Pope's good side, otherwise you may suffer from Crusades. Polish should also be allied with as they will also provide some assistance with the Hungarians.

Byzantine Units
Light Infantry:
Peasants
Life at the bottom rung of medieval society is not easy or healthy. In times of war peasants are forced from their farms and drafted into levies, and if they are lucky, given some kind of simple weapon to fight with. Unsurprisingly peasants are undisciplined troops who are better at fleeing than they are fighting.

Town Militia
Common throughout Europe, Town Militia are commoners and peasants who have been levied into local militias to defend towns, roads and bolster armies. Given some training and equipped with a spear and little to no armour these units are useful in support roles for heavier and better units.

Spear / Pike Infantry
Byzantine Spearmen
Byzantine Spearmen are a step up from spear militias, better trained and equipped these troops are able to form a defensive ring. These are longer serving soldiers, used to defending settlements and bolstering armies. Equipped with a spear and light armour these troops are a little more robust than local militias formed by peasants.

Spear Militia
These troops are peasants from villages and small towns across the Byzantine Empire who have been levied into local militias to defend towns, roads and bolster armies. Given some training and equipped with a spear and light little to no armour, these units are useful in support roles for heavier and better units.

Heavy Infantry
Byzantine Infantry
Made up of soldiers recruited with small 'pronoiai' land grants, these Infantry "made up of peoples from all lands", fight for the Byzantine Empire more for profit then any sense of loyalty. These soldiers are equipped with a sword and large shield and wear mail armour for protection.

Varangian Guard
The most famous of all Byzantine units, made up wholely of Norsemen, the Varangian guard were initially a military levy sent to the Byzantine emperor from the 'Rus' which are now a permanent unit often used as a royal bodyguards. These superbly skilled warriors wield two handed axes with vicious abandon, hacking down the Emperor's enemies. They are highly powerful and are able to take down many opponents in one battle.

Dismounted Byzantine Lancers
Well trained and well disciplined, Byzantine Lancers are well armoured and equipped with a lance and a sword. Common throughout the Byzantine Empire, their training and discipline allows makes them very useful on the battlefield, whether mounted or on foot.

Dismounted Latinkon
Latinkon is the collective term in Latin for western European troops, mostly mercenaries, in the Byzantine army. Despite fluctuating numbers, there are enough of them to warrant the position of Megas Konostabllos being created to oversee them. Wearing heavy armour these experienced and well trained fighters are armed with lances and swords and are effective both mounted or on foot.

Missile Infantry
Peasant Archers
While most peasants in Europe were levied into the army, at sword point if need be, some welcomed the opportunity to earn some pay, and travel. Peasant Archers are accustomed to using their bow for hunting. These peasant archers are armed with a small bow, knife, and if lucky enough, some armour.

Archer Militia
Members of such militias within the Byzantine Empire, are not career soldiers but a type of trained civilian guard called,' tzakones'. Responsible for protecting settlements, roads and forts, these archers are armed with a small bow and sword and wear padded armour.

Trebizond Archers
Hailing from the edge of the Black Sea and plying their trade in the service of Byzantium, these men are recruited from the peasantry but well trained in the use of the composite bow. They are effective against light infantry and when grouped in large numbers and can become a thorn in the side of any opponent.

Byzantine Guard Archers
Byzantine guard troops are financed by the Emperor himself and unlike many Byzantine units consist purely of Greek troops. Skilled in the use of the composite bow, these troops issue a challenge to all Byzantium's enemies at range. Also equipped with a sword and wearing mail, the Guard Archers can withstand more combat than many other missile units.

Heavy Cavalry
Kataphractoi
The Kataphractoi trace their origins back to Roman times and are normally recruited from amongst the middle classes, providing the Byzantine army with a force of well trained and well disciplined cavalry units. Well protected and armed with a lance and a mace and although somewhat outdated by modern heavy cavalry, they still make for formidable fighters on the battlefield.

Byzantine Lancers
Well trained and well disciplined, Byzantine Lancers are well armoured and equipped with a lance and a sword. Common throughout the Byzantine Empire, their training and discipline allows makes them very useful on the battlefield

Latinkon
Latinkon is the collective term in Latin for western European troops, mostly mercenaries, in the Byzantine army. Despite fluctuating numbers, there are enough of them to warrant the position of Megas Konostabllos being created to oversee them. Wearing heavy mail through to plate mail these experienced and well trained fighters are armed with lances and swords.

Militia Cavalry
Used throughout the Byzantine Empire to protect merchants, provincial towns and roads, Militia Cavalry are poorly trained and armoured in light mail armour and equipped with a spear. These men are very good at chasing down archers and light infantry and light cavalry.

General's Bodyguard
These truly formidable troops are the general's personal bodyguard who accompany him on the battlefield. Selected for their loyalty and martial prowess these elite warriors fear little and shrug off odds that would crush many other units. Wearing heavy mail or partial plate and wielding lances this unit is capable of devastating charges and riding down most foes.

Missile Cavalry
Byzantine Cavalry
Made up of soldiers with small land grants, 'pronoiai', these cavalrymen are a type of reservist who is called up from time to time. These medium cavalry are influenced by Turkish tactics and training exercises and are better than most horse archers in melee. They wear padded to heavy mail armour and are equipped with a composite bow and sword.

Skythikon
Skythikon is the Byzantine term used to describe the mainly Cuman, Asiatic Nomads, who serve the Byzantine Empire exclusively as horse archers. Accustomed to being on horseback in the plains and steppes of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region, these cavalrymen wear little to no armour and are armed with a composite bow and a small sword.

Vardariotai
The Vardariotai are drawn mainly from the Magyars that settled in the Vardar Valley (Today's FY ROM), and their descendants. Disciplined and highly trained, the Vardariotai are elite horse archers. They wear light mail to light brigandine armour and fire a composite bow from horseback. Able to relentlessly pepper their enemies with arrows and use their mobility to stay out of trouble.

Mercenary Units
Alan Light Cavalry
Alan Light Cavalry are hardy horsemen, accustomed to the plains and steppes of Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region. Having fought against the Byzantine Empire previously, now ironically they are highly valued as mercenaries by their former enemy. Allan Light Cavalrymen are equipped with spear and light armour, useful for skirmishing, raiding and ambushing tactics and for covering flanks.

Artillery
Catapult
Constructed of wood and capable of flinging stones large enough to crush a man's head, the catapult was a common site on the ancient Roman battlefield. Now in the medieval era the catapult is being replaced by newer and more powerful weapons.
Trebuchet
The counter-weight Trebuchet is an evolution of the man-powered mangonel and catapults dating back before the 11th century. It has quickly spread throughout the world as an effective siege engine capable of lobbing large wall- crushing boulders. The Trebuchet is also able to fling such things as burning missiles and rotten animal remains to devastate enemy units.

Ballista
Invented in ancient Greece and resembling nothing more than a giant crossbow, the Ballista is capable of flinging a javelin with lethal force well over 100 meters! Unlike the crossbow the Ballista derives its force from twisted animal sinew and not tension from the frontal arms. No matter where the power comes from this weapon can impale any unit.

Trebuchet
Trebuchet, probably the modern equivelent of a rocket launcher, these hard hitting "catapults" were Europe's, best siege Artilary until the invention of gunpowder.

Bombard
The first primitive gunpowder siege artillery, bombards were created in China and Western Europe in the early 14th century and spread to the rest of the world by the late 14th century. Forged from bronze or iron, and designed to fire stone balls to crumble enemy defences. They also shoot inaccurate flaming balls wrapped in pitch-soaked rags, that can incinerate enemy troops!

Trebuchet
Trebuchet, probably the modern equivelent of a rocket launcher, these hard hitting "catapults" were Europes, best siege Artilary until the invention of gunpowder.

Trebuchet
Trebuchet, probably the modern equivelent of a rocket launcher, these hard hitting "catapults" were Europes, best siege Artilary until the invention of gunpowder.

History
Pontus was founded by Mithradates I Ktistes, son of Prince Mithradates of Cius, who was murdered by Antigonus Monothanus.Antigonus planned to murder Mithradates the younger as well, but Mithradates was tipped off by Demetrius Poliorcetes, and fled to the powerful fortress of Cimiata, from which he extended his power, and was joined by various troops from across the region.Eventually he proclaimed himself king.He made alliances with various towns to protect them from the Diadochi, and allied himself with the Gauls of Galatia. His Kingdon remained independent until the the reign of Mithrdates VI.Though Mithradates was a strong king,he had the misfortune of being forced to face the Romans. He fought against them with some success for a time, but even Mithradates was no match for Pompey the Great and he was defeated. Later Pharnaces II rebelled again against the Romans and Julius Caesar quelled the uprising quickly, hence the saying "Veni, vidi, vici" I came, I saw, I won.
Game Play
Starting Position
Macedon starts in Greece and Macedon itself of course. Macedon is a challenging faction to play, as plague will soon strike Thessalonica.

Win Conditions
Long Campaign:Hold Rome and 49 other provinces.

Units
Macedon has pikemen and strong horsemen, including the famous Companions. They are also able to recruit Cretan Archers as mercenaries.

Unique Units
*Royal Pikemen: This unit is more like a hoplite unit equipped with long spears than a true pikemen unit. They are the second best spear unit in the game.
*Companion Cavalry: These cavalry men have a powerful charge,as well as melee capability.
*Macedonian Cavalry: A nimble unit which is easy to train and quite effective.
*Light Lancers: A fast unit with a incredible charge.
Strategy guides
One possible strategy as Macedon would be to take over the Greeks, then attack the adjacent Romans, before eliminating the Thracians to the north. Then you can either expand against the western barbarians,or cross the Hellespont to face off with Egypt and the Seleucid Empire.
History
Macedon was a prosperous region to the north of Greece, who's first recorded king was Perdiccas I. The kings after him continued to establish control of Macedon, until the reign of Philip III. Philip expanded Macedonian influence into Greece. He planned to invade the Persian Empire, but was assassinated. The task fell to Philip's son Alexander the Great. After retaking Greece, and campaigning against the tribes to the north,Alexander invaded and seized the Persian Empire,as well as parts of India. His empire fell apart after his untimely death. Macedon survived as a kingdom until the reign of King Perseas, who was defeated by the Romans.

Parthia has nearby rebels to conquer and three immediate factions to contend with:Scythia, Armenia, and the Seleucid Empire.

Starting Position
Parthia has three starting territories at the edge of the map: Susa, Arsakia, and Campus Sakae.

*Susa is bordered by Seleucia to the west(Seleucid owned), Dumatha to the south (Rebel owned), and Arsakia to the north (Parthian owned).

*Arsakia is bordered by Seleucia to the south-west (Seleucid owned), Hatra to the south-west (Seleucid owned), Susa to the south( Parthian owned), Phraaspa to the west(Rebel owned), and over the Caspian Sea to the north is Campus Sakae( Parthian owned).

*Campus Sakae is the northern-most settlement on the map bordered by Campus Alanni to the southwest(Scythian owned), Phraaspa to the south (Rebel owned), and Arsakia to the south (Parthian owned).

Win Conditions
Long Campaign- Conquer Rome and 50 provinces.

Short Campaign- Hold 15 provinces and Conquer or outlive the following factions: Seleucid Empire and Armenia.

Units
Parthia has the standard eastern units such as: Horse Archers, Eastern Infantry, Hillmen, and, cataphracts. Slingers(instead of peltasts), its own War Elephant (Parthia is the only eastern faction with one), and two unique units described below.

Unique Units
Parthia has two completely unique units that no other faction has.

The first of these units is Persian Cavalry. Persian Cavalry is a horse archer unit with long-range and melee capability. They can shoot their enemies at a distance or be used as light sword-armed cavalry. They also have the Cantabrian Circle ability allowing them to circle in front of an enemy to avoid missile fire.

The next special and unique unit is the Camel Cataphract. The camel cataphract is like it's armoured counterpart but with camels instead of horses. Having camels allows these particular cataphracts to pack an armoured punch and also fight other cavalry due to camels, which scare horses.

Strategy
A good Parthian strategy should be to conquer the eastern part of the Seleucid Empire, and Armenia. Take out Armenia fast!!!! Capturing the Caspian Sea would be great for trade as well. Their armies would rely on Heavy Cavalry (Cataphracts), and Horse Archers.

The Seleucid Empire are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.
Game Play
The Seleucid Empire is a fun and challenging faction, recommended for players who want a wide variety of troops and like different types of warfare.

Starting Position
The Seleucid Empire begin in a very vulnerable position, just south of Pontus, in what is modern day South Turkey. They are bordering and surrounded by Pontus, Egypt, the Greeks and the Parthians, and are usually defeated early on because of this.

Win Conditions
Long Game: Seleucids must hold Rome and 49 other regions.

Short Game:Seleucids must hold 15 regions and destroy or outlast Egypt.

Units
The Seleucids have a vast array of units, combining both Greek and Eastern units into a very flexible and powerful force. Their arsenal includes pikeman, cataphracts, elephants, chariots, companion cavalry, and even legionaries.

-Infantry-
Peasants
Militia Hoplites
Levy Pikemen
Phalanx Pikemen
Silver Sheild Pikemen
Silver Sheild Legionaries

-Missiles-
Peltasts
Archers
Onagers
Heavy Onagers

-Cavalry-
Militia Cavalry
Greek Cavalry
Cataphracts
Companion Cavalry
Scythed Chariots

The Seleucids have several advantages that connect the best units of the ancient world:

-Companion Cavalry, which only Macedon has.
-Cataphracts, only Armenia, Pontus and Parthia have it else.
-Elephants, only Carthage has it else.
-Chariots, only Pontus and Egypt have it else.
-Elite Phalanx from the Hellenistic factions.
-Hephaestus temple for golden armoury, only the Scipii had it else.
-Legionaires from the Romans.

So this all comes together in the Seleucid faction.

Strategy guides
The Seleucid Empire have indeed the potential of becoming an unstoppable power. The only barrier standing between them and world domination is their very vulnerable beginning position. All your neighbours will declare war on you eventually and most of them in the very beginning. Egypt will attack Damascus and Antioch, Pontus will try to invade Tarsus and Sardis, Parthia will try to take Seleucia, Armenia wants Hatra and if this is not enough, there's a little extra: the Greeks will try to take Sardis too.

The most powerful enemy will be Egypt as the Eastern factions armies are made up mostly of Hillmen and Eastern Infantry, units that rout easily. Now, the Seleucid Empire is very likely to be destroyed, and very early on too! And indeed under AI control it is destroyed very easily. No wonder, as the only units you have early on are Peltasts, Militia hoplites, Militia cavalry and Levy pikemen, units that are no match for the spears and chariots of Pontus and Egypt and the horse-units of Parthia and Armenia.

The Seleucid Empire have one advantage from the beginning of the war, together with Egypt. Their power lies in their treasury. Therefore, the key to surviving the beginning of the assaults is wealth. Armenia, Parthia, Pontus and especially Egypt (which is their weakness) are all easily bribed and they don't even ask huge amounts of gold. Only faction leaders and heirs will not give in to being bribed. Therefore, use this wealth. It is easy to bribe all the armies sent against you, therefore assaults will become rare, making it easier for your settlements to improve and evolve, making your treasury even greater. Put diplomats at all the weak spots, which are basically all settlements.

Meanwhile, you can evolve while your diplomats hold the foreign assaults at bay. Get City barracks AND a stone wall as fast as possible in Antioch so you can train some decent troops and have a good defense for your capital. You'll have to put up with Militia's and Levy's in the beginning but make sure you hire mercenaries too when you see an assault coming (for example and Egyptian faction leader that doesn't want to join you and goes straight for Antioch). Bribing the enemy armies makes your enemies weaker so the eventual conquest of their lands will be easier. Bribing enemies doesn't hurt your treasury very much and remember, it's only temporary because soon you will have new units.

Here unfolds the Seleucid power: the most diverse troop type in the entire campaign. You'll be able to flood your enemies with Elephants, Cataphracts, Chariots, you name it. Only be patient and careful in the beginning. Bribe the enemy at all cost and keep your settlements at all cost. Upon reaching your powerful units, the conquest of all the realms that troubled you will be easy indeed. Start with Asia Minor. Take Sidon at the same time and then move to Salamis. Leave Egypt for that time and move on to Armenia and Parthia in the north. Conquer the entire east, but not (yet) Egypt, since it is very likely to revolt! Cross the sea to Greece and invade it. After all you have now reached the 'unstoppable-status'. Not even the Romans will be able to hold you off for very long.
Seleucid Empire Guide
AAR's
History
The Seleucid Empire was originally formed by Seleucus I Nicator, after Alexander the Great's death. He was one of the diadochi amongst whom the Alexandrine Empire was originally divided by his satraps. In 312BC, he took control of Babylonia, and founded a capital at Seleucia. Later, when he took over Syria, he founded a capital there, Antioch, named after his father. He steadily took control over all the Middle and Near East, culminating with the battle of Ipsus in 301BC, granting him control over much of Asia Minor. In 281BC, he defeated a Macedonian army, and was all set to invade Thrace when he was assassinated by Ptolemy Keraunos (all the male Pharaohs of greek Egypt were called Ptolemy).
After his death, his empire immediately began to splinter. Galatia was lost early on to invading Celts from Pannonia and Thrace, Cappadocia quickly declared its independence. Seleucus himself had swapped his territories on the Indus river for a bunch of war elephants, and now a bunch of barbarians (Saka, Dahae, Bactrians, etc.) were causing trouble and unrest in their provinces. Antiochus I, the II, Seleucus II and Seleucus III all proved incapable of maintaining their empire effectively.
Then along came Antiochus III, Antiochus the Great. He came to power in 222BC, and quickly sorted out the Parthians and re-established his empire into a solid chunk of the Near and Middle East. He took Coele Syria and Cilicia back from the Egyptians. However, the Egyptians were Roman allies, as were the Pergamonids, and they appealed to Rome for help.
The Romans sent a bunch of diplomats to teach Antiochus who was boss. Among them was the famous conqueror, Scipio Africanus. They said that if Antiochus didn't behave, then he was looking at a knuckle sandwich from Rome. Antiochus told them their demands were absurd, and informed them that they should mind their own business.
Then the Aetolian League decided it didn't like the Romans any more (they felt they hadn't got their share of the profits from the Second Macedonian War). They decided to make an alliance with Sparta, so that they would not then be overlooked by Antiochus as insignificant. The Romans then attacked and sacked Sparta. This did not amuse the proud greeks, whom Flaminius, the hero of the Second Macedonian War, had declared were now free (from Macedon, he obviously meant, not Rome). The greeks thought they were properly free, and decided they did not like Rome's demands for tribute. They also were not amused by Rome attacking Sparta. If Greece was free, what the Romans doing attacking Sparta?
The Aetolians therefore appealed to Antiochus to free them from Rome, and the Pergamonids appealed to Rome to free them from Antiochus. The seleucids invaded Greece. The Romans beat them at Thermopylae (where the Seleucids thought they were safe in the famous bottleneck), then chased them beck to Asia and beat them at Magnesia. Antiochus surrendered, and was ordered right out of Asia Minor.
The Seleucid Empire continued to decline with the death of Antiochus. In 141BC, the Parthian rebels sacked Seleucia. In 83, the Armenians conquered Syria. In 69, the Romans beat the Armenians and told them to stick to Armenia. The Seleucids came back, and then Pompey turned up in Antioch and brought the end of the Seleucid kingdom with him.

Game Play
Starting Position
Egypt is wealthy desert empire located in the north Africa. In the beginning it owns few cities wich are:

*Alexandria: Capital city with high public order. It also has a wonder, Pharos at Alexandria , biggest lighthouse in the known world built by Alexander the Great.

*Memphis: Second biggest city of Egypt, this one has Pyramid wonder.Pyramid at Giza increases population loyalty to owning faction regardless of culture.

*Thebes: Southern city in upper Egypt, Thebes is only a small one when you begin.

*Salamis: Located on island it is very rich city, especially because of mines and naval trade.

*Jerusalem: Very big and very unhappy city that is also rich. If it revolts Judean Zaelots own it.

*Sidon: Also big city bordered with Seleucid Empire, it is important to keep it well garrisoned and ready to deal with Seleucian threat.

Win Conditions
Long campaign: Hold 50 provinces including Rome

Short campaign: Hold 15 provinces and outlast or destroy Armenia and Seleucid Empire

Units
Units are cheap and light. They are fantastic desert units because of the high desert bonus that they get when fighting in desert.
Their generals have fantastic chariot archer bodyguards, which fire at enemy from great distance.
Their cavalry is fast and swift, including light cavalry, camel archers, chariot archers, heavy chariots, and other specialist light cavalry.
They also have many phalanx formations. These include the basic Nubian spearmen all the way to the elite Pharoah's Guards.
Their archers area also very good. They can recruit elite Pharoah's Bowmen.

Unique Units
*Pharaoh's guards: Fantastic pikemen that may enter phalanx formation. They are well armoured and combined with Pharaoh's Bowmen they are deadly. They are armored from head to toe with a conical helm and a long mail shirt.

*Pharaoh's bowman: Deadly archers that are fantastic in desert, also have a good hand attack when run out of arrows. They are armored similarly to their compatriots in the phalanx, i.e., Pharoah's Guards.

*Desert Axemen: Cheap, powerful infantry. Very good against opposing infantry. They are quick, and carry a powerful axe and square wooden shield.

*Chariots, Egypt has many chariots;
:*First and deadliest of all are fast chariot archers that can fire from long distance to soften enemy ranks. When the enemy comes close they automatically retreat, unless the skirmish option is toggled off.

:*Second there are Egyptian chariots that use powerful charge and hand-to-hand to crush the coming enemy.

:*Third there are Generals bodyguard, great and swift, this chariots are fantastic archers

Keep in mind that all of these are also excellent at routing the enemy due to the morale damage they impose by just standing near enemy troops. However, beware the fact that they can also run over your own troops when charging.

Strategy guides
First of all, there is the threat from the Seleucid Empire to the north east. They are a big empire, very capable of causing problems. A possible tactic is to attack them very fast (at turn 2-3) and take Antioch and then expand at your own will. Once Antioch is taken, Seleucid resistance crumbles. It's generally best to take on the Seleucids early as their early game units are inferior to yours, but their late game units are quite strong. However, a second possible tactic is to make an alliance with the Seleucid Empire and while it lasts make a big army in your border cities to counter their betrayal when it happens, as it undoubtedly will at some stage.

Overview
An unplayable faction found in all of the Total War games, rebels are unique faction. They represent all minor states and nations that are not in game. When city has small public order , usually below 70% , rebellion will occur. When city rebels there are two options:

*It will become a Rebel city and will have average army consisted of units that usually can be recruited there

*Instead of revolting to the Rebels it will return to its previous (for example: if the Romans conquer Carthage and the faction Carthage dies and later on in the game the Egyptians take Carthage but it rebels, it will become Roman) or historical owner, ex. Cyrene often revolts and becomes Greek or Macedon

There are also various brigands that represent thieves, robbers and such... They will appear inside territories and regions under control of other factions including yours. They must be repelled fast because they do things that will hurt your economy:

*devastation- simulating the destruction of roads , villages and everything around them hurting your economy

*blocked roads- when brigands stand near your roads they will block part of the trade income for that settlement

*capture watchtowers- if rebels come upon your watchtower they will capture it reducing your view over enemy territory

There are also sea brigands known as pirates. When they occur they prey upon passing ships and sometimes are brave enough to blockade a port, but when your fleet is docked it is safe in most cases.

The most powerful rebels are the Amazons in Hyperboria. They are peaceful at first, and will not attack or wander out of their own region, but if they just came out of a revolt, they will pursue the previous owners to the edge and back. Their only units originally are Amazon Chariots (which are bad enough), but after a revolt they will also have a rebel general calvary and a few peasents - all full gold-shields and weapons - but can easily be put down if you have a lot of archers and spearmen (and I mean pikes, not some cheap Triarii or something like that. Also use heavy calvary such as Cataphracts, as they are hard to kill and will be able to clear the chariots for you.

There is also a rumor that they can recruit the fabled Yubtseb elephants, which are the elephants spawned when the oliphaunt cheat is used, but it might just be a rumor.

Barbarian Invasion
Germania are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.

Game Play
Germans start below Scandinavia. They are bordered by Gaul to the west and are close to the House of Julii to the south. Dacia will also soon be coming knocking on the doors from the east.

Starting Position
They start below Scandiniavia with several villages and towns under their control:

DAMME-CAPITAL

VICUS MARCOMANNI

TRIER

MOGONTIACUM

BATAVORDUM

Win Conditions
LONG CAMPAIGN: Hold 50 provinces including Rome

SHORT CAMPAIGN:Hold 15 provinces and outlast or destroy Dacia and Scythia

Units
Units are barbarian and include powerful infantry, the spear warband, slow but strong and the only barbarian unit able to form a phalanx, a more than adequate cavalry, including, at level three, the Gothic cavalry, which is really very good, and good long range Chosen archers. Axemen are also recruitable, which work well in hacking into enemy lines and causing a dent in their defences.

Your early army would include four or five spear warbands, a couple of axemen posted behind and just inside the outermost spears (to guard the flanks), a couple of barbarian cavalry (to guard the flanks and run down routing opponents) posted behind the axeman, and your general. Roll these guys into the enemy and watch them melt away.

A later full stack army would include 7 spears, three Chosen axemen (2 posted as above to guard the flanks and one behind the center of the line to prevent breaks and guard the archers), five Chosen archers in the center, four Gothic cavs (posted behind the Chosen axemen on the flanks) and your general. These guys will beat the best Roman army straight up. Be careful to protect the flanks, and when you have done that, loose the axemen and Gothic cavs behind enemy lines and chase down the routers.

Unique Units
BERSERKERS: Fanatic heroic infantry that will almost never rout. Can be recruited by building shrine to Donar.

SCREECHING WOMEN: Women that have special attack of reducing enemy morale and increasing friendly morale. Recruitable by building shrine to Freya.

GOTHIC CALVARY: The best calvary able to be recruited by the barbarians, they're well armored and have great charge capabilities. They can be recruited by building a certain shrine.

NIGHT RAIDERS: The ultimate Germanian soldiers, these troops are excellent in attack and defense, and can terrify enemy troops when they spring out of the forests.

Strategy guides
Possible strategy with Germanics is to expand into Gaul territory before being ready to conquer Italy.
Also it is possible to conquer Britain before challenging Romans.
Numidia are one of the factions in Rome: Total War designed to be non-playable. However they can be made playable by simple modifications to the game files.

Game Play
Numidia is very hard nation to play. It has poor units and even worse position near Carthage.

Starting Position
Numidia start in south-west Africa bordered by Carthage. They control two cities:

CIRTA- Cirta is the capital city, bordered by the city of Carthage to the East

DIMIDDI- Dimiddi is located in middle territories of Numidia just south of Cirta

TINGI- located on the far west of Africa and often safe from AI attack

SIWA- bordered by the Egyptian faction in the east , Siwa will soon be under attack from Egypt.

Win Conditions
SHORT CAMPAIGN- hold 15 provinces and destroy or outlast Carthage

LONG CAMPAIGN- hold 50 provinces including Rome
Units are mostly cheap desert soldiers. They have bonuses in deserts.
There is also a large variety of light cavalry including Bedouin camel archers.

Unique Units
NUMIDIAN LEGIONARIES- Copy of Roman legionaries these are not so disciplined and highly trained as their Roman counter-parts. They throw pila before charging.

DESERT INFANTRY- Cheap, but mildly effective infantry that is capable of holding the line against light cavalry and infantry.

Strategy guides
One possible strategy with Numidia is to try hard and conquer Carthage early in game so you can make some money. Siwa should be left to Egypt as there is no point in trying to keep it as an isolated outpost from your empire. Build better barracks as soon as possible because only Numidian legionaries are decent soldiers in Numidia. For missile support you can use javelinmen as they are good against elephants and can engage in melee as well.

The Gauls are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.

Game Play
Gauls are barbarian civilization, it is very hard playing them because they start just above The House of Julii which seeks expansion.

Starting Position
Gauls start in modern France and upper Italy. they control few cities in France and two of them are bordered by House of Julii in Italy, they are also bordered by Spain to the east and Britons to the north.

Their cities are:

ALESIA- Capital

CONDATE RODONUM- Safe inside empire, located deep inside modern France

PATAVIUM- High population growth , bordered by Julii, upper Italy

LEMONUM - Safe inside empire, located deep inside modern France

MEDIOLANUM - Located in upper Italy , bordered by Julii

NARBO MARITUS - Bordered by Spain to south west

NUMANTHIA - Located near modern day Madrid

Win Conditions
LONG CAMPAIGN: Hold 50 regions including Rome

SHORT CAMPAIGN: Hold 15 regions and outlast or destroy Julii and SPQR

Units
Gauls are fierce fighters and have many infantry but few cavalry support. Infantry can use warcry, special ability that takes 10 seconds to preform and gives attack bonus next 30 seconds.

Unique Units
Naked fanatics: Can be recruited by building certain shrines, have high attack damage, they are specific to barbarian factions including Spain.

Druids: Can be recruited by building certain shrines, Gauls share this units with Britons. They chant to raise morale of nearby troops and lower it for enemies.

Forester Warband: Can be recruited by building either a certain shrine or an archery range. They can hide anywhere and can slug it out with some light, medium and even some heavy infantry.

Strategy guides
One possible strategy is to build a massive army in beginning of game and attack the House of Julii before Marian reforms occur. It is possible to utilise barbarian tactics of out-numbering the oppenent and a full on charge to beat the opponent into submission. You can do this because of the high numbers in barbarian units. You might also have to deal with Britannia, Germania, or Spain. In any case, if you let the Romans get the Marian reforms, your units will be hopelessly outclassed.

Total War

Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion (often abbreviated to BI) is the first official expansion pack released by the Creative Assembly for the game Rome: Total War.
Barbarian Invasion was released on September 30, 2005.

Overview
It is the year 363 AD. After decades of internal strife, the Roman Empire has been split in two. In Europe, Barbarian tribes are on the move, ready and willing to cross the Rhine and Danube and attack the divided Romans. Huge armies of Barbarian Horsemen threaten the once great Empire, as rivalry between the two weakens their borders.

Christianity has become the state religion of the Roman empire. Paganism still remains with the Barbarians and much of the Empire, especially in frontier twons and forts.
Religion will be a major issue, especially with the resurgent Sassanid Empire's worship of Zoroaster and their persecution of Christians, and the different denominations of Christianity amonst the barbarians.

Gameplay
See Rome: Total War and Expansions for game-play considerations common to Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion and Alexander.
The gameplay is enhanced from that of the original Rome.
Most of the changes can be found in the next section, but some, such as for unit balancing are not mentioned.

Romans
In the original Rome, the player found himself with invincible legionary cohorts that would crush anything in their path!
However, these are the waning days of Roman dominion, and the army is drastically changed. There are two basic infantry types- limitanei and comitatenses. The comitatenses are supposed to be frontline troops, but are not as strong as the legions of old! Do not march overconfidently into battle with a few of these!

Barbarians
To reflect the rising star of the barbarian's fortunes, many of their units have been enhanced. Some barbarian factions can also convert to Christianity to gain access to even more powerful units!
Barbarian units have very good mrale, and have good quality weapons. They have moved away from the puny warbands Caesar so easily crushed, and are now a force to be reckoned with! There is also a greater number of female units.

Horse Archer Factions
Many new factions are built around horse archers, such as the Huns, Sarmatians, and Roxolani. There are many types of horse archer, and are all poweful.

Eastern Factions
The two eastern factions are the Sassanids and the Berbers.
The Sassanids are based on Rome's Parthians, and start the game with a good-sized kingdom. They can reruit many powerful troops in terms of cavary, but have little good infantry until they can recruit the heavy Sughdian Warriors. Among the cavalry types are horse archers and Clibanarii, which are cataphracts with a bow and mace.

The Berbers have similar strengths and weaknesses. They have a wealth of good light cavalry, but few reliable infantry. There are many mercenaries available in the African regions, so they will act as fillers for many Berber armies.

Additional Features
*Night battles. Generals can now pick up traits that allow them to fight at night, thereby granting allied armies bonus and conferring disadvantages on the enemy.

*Emerging Factions. Some factions can emerge in the game as the result of revolts or historical events. For example, the Ostrogoths, Western Roman Rebels and Eastern Roman Rebels form if a settlement owned by the Goths, WRE or ERE rebels. The Slavs appear in-game in 410 AD, and the Romano-British emerge when all Roman-owned settlements in Britain are conquered by another faction.

*New factions, Generals, and Units. By 363 AD Europe, North Africa, and Middle East had drastically changed. New "barbarian" tribes were migrating into Europe, the Sassanids had risen in Persia, and the Roman Empire had been split in two, and had even come to blows. All this is reflected in the hundreds of new units available. General's units are now also recruitable.

*Loyalty attribute. This is added to all Roman Family Members, and measures their chance to rebel or be bribed.

*Swimming. Many units can now swim, and can cross rivers without using a bridge or ford. This alters bridge battles significantly. A exhausted unit may drown when attempting to swim.

*Recruitable Generals. All factions can now recruit generals, providing they have the required level of Stable. They essentially act as a Captain that can gain character traits and ancillaries.

*New traits and ancillaries. Three and a half centuries onwards from the end of Rome:Total War, family members now gain new traits (though old ones can still be gained). The most important is the Night Fighter trait, allowing a General to fight at night.

*Hordes. Many Barbarian factions now have the ability to "horde". A larger overview of Hording can be found here.

*Religion. Religion is now a far more important aspect than in Rome: Total War. For more information, go here.

Factions
:*See main article:Factions in BI
The factions in Barbarian Invasion are completely new, for the most part. There are still the Persian Empire, but in a different dynasty. There are still the romans, but instead of three families and a Senate, there are the Eastern and Western parts of the Roman Empire. These two factions are completely seperate, and will go to war against each other.
