The Papal States is a non-playable faction in Medieval II: Total War. Historically the Papal States was one of the major Italian states, until the Unification of Italy in 1861. The head of the States is always the Pope, who leads "God's Armies" into battle, and governs the only Papal city in the game, Rome. Players cannot play as the Papal States unless enabled by modding the descr_strat file. When trying to unlock the Papal States and other non-playable factions, you should remember that gameplay as them can be unstable. They are simailar to the senate of Rome total war.
Victory Conditions
*Long campaign: Hold 100 regions.
*Short campaign: Hold 80 regions.

Campaign Play
This campaign is one of... irony. You start off with very high armoured units such as the Papal Guard and Swiss Guard. You can quickly develop Rome into a powerhouse and adopt family members, but beware of crossing Milan and Sicily. This is where the irony comes in, if either Milan or Sicily attack you, they suffer no penalties but you do. You can face excomunication from the pope which will probably command your army. But if you manage to defend your cities, the rest of the campaign is a slice of cake. Your heavy infantry from your large cities will... well defeat your enemies quite quickly and your stronghold in italy is not easily oppossed.

Portugal is one of the factions in Medieval II: Total War that can be unlocked by either eliminating them during a campaign or by meeting the victory conditions. They can also be made playable via modding. For obvious reasons they start the game adjacent to Spain and the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula, possessing Lisbon and Pamplona.
Starting Position
Portugal's starting position seperates the faction into two halves, one settlement in the East and one in the West. This could start them with endless possiblities. They could expand North into France and capture Bordeux. They could expanded southwards and capture Zaragoza and Valencia. They could even move along the North Africa and into the Holy lands.

Their settlements are;
*Short campaign: Hold 15 regions including: Eliminate Spain and Moors.

The Army
The army of Portugal is a very odd one in comparison to their neighbors. The portugeese have a very strong army including, the various iberian skirmishers, armoured pikemen in the late age, Portugeese arquebusiers who are highly armoured arquebusiers who can definetely take a charge, and portugeese knights who are the equal of noble knights or english knights. The portugeese start off with a bad army but if you manage to expand, your army is probably the best army in the game due to all the varities. Heavy knights for attack, armoured pikemen for defense, and one of the best musketeer units.
Morea is held by Venice which usually defends Morea fiercly against the Ottomans, and the other is mainland Greece which is under the control of the Ottoman Empire.

The Unit
Winged Hussars are the elite calvary of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth and possbily the world! (not really). These are availble to Poland-Lithuania when you have a Army Board. They are represented as the elite of european calvary and very useful in taking out other calvary or grenediers.

Origins
The Winged Hussars have a very large history in europe and Poland, all starting in Hungary. At first starting as light calvary in Hungary and other countries as mercenaries. Over time in Hungary, the light calvary of the nation adapted at using Plate Armor in the medieval age. Skip forward a few decades and the same is happening in Poland. At first representing the might of polish calvary they soon developed a persona of their own. Especially in the Siege of Vienna where the Holy League was defending against a Ottoman invasion. It is here where the might of the Winged Hussars reached their height. In this battle, the Polish forces under their own king, the same as the starting king in ETW, led the largest calvary charge in history. The follwing charge led to the defeat of the Ottoman force and gave the Winged Hussars a mighty role in heavy calvary in other nations. Historically, they wore "wings" on their backs of Scale or Plate armor to give themselves a terrifying appearance. Although the use of this is debated, most agree that they were used to make the horses death (no hearing) in order to be immune to musical bands used by the Ottomans and other nations to rout calvary.

Tactics
These heavy calvary are the best, and I mean the best calvary in the game. They are a combination of a lancer unit and heavy calvary which leads to a devestating charge and the 30% to 33% of the enemy force in the charge. Against grenediers, they are absolutely devesating, even standing a chance to "auto-rout" the grenediers. Due to the small unit size of the grenediers, the charge of the hussars will usually take out 60 to 70% of the force if used correcly. But this is unadvised to charge other line infantry if they are idle. But other than the obivious weakness with al calvary, these Hussars the best force to take on any unit in the game.

Hungarian Grenediers are truly a sight to behold. These are the best Grenediers in the game in comparison to training, limits, and timeframe. They have a accuracy of 50 which is "elite" status for any unit. They also have a reloading time of 40 which is 15 more than normal line infantry. These grenediers are available at Hungary when you have a Barracks available. These units are perfect for early game Austrian players because they give Austria a very early elite unit.

Tactics
Hungarian Grenediers are best used in conjuction with other line infantry. One tactitc is to let your line infantry to "hold" the enemy in place while using the grenediers to flank them and deliver a accuracte volley. If used correctly, the enemy unit will rout rather quickly because of the grenediers reloading time.
While in a fort, they are best used on the walls due to their acurrate firing and high melee skill. These units are especially devestating on calvary if your enemy is not paying attention. One volley from this unit is usually enough to rout provinicial calvary or devestate elite calvary.
But as always, these units are vulnerable to artillery fire but even more so due to their unit size.

Mexico is a emergent faction in Empire Total War. It is created when the region of New Spain rebels and captures the regional capital. This nation is somewhat of "major nation" in a sense because of the plentiful natural resources in the New Spain region. If you are playing as the Spanish empire in the Grand Campaign and this nation manages to become free, you will have problems. One is that, if you have built up their capital, they will begin to train a massive army. This is alloted through the New Spain region usually having over 10,000 resources when fully developed. If you do not hold the line against this nation, it will spread and conquer every nearby region. Itm is advised to take immediate action if you do not want Mexico to spread all across the american theatre. Other than their massive economic start, they have a standard line up of infantry, calvary, and artillery as any other nation.
