The Eastern Roman Empire is one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War's expansion Barbarian Invasion.

Historical Overview
In 330 AD, the capital of the Roman Empire was moved to the ancient city of Byzantium, situated between the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara. Constantine renamed it Nova Roma, and after he died in 337 AD it was named Constantinople in his honour.Constantine also converted the romans to Christianity, that's why the byzantines in M2TW are Christian.

For decades the Roman Empire had struggled to maintain control over its vast territories. Splitting the Empire into West and East was a logical solution, however the West was, in general, more vulnerable and less wealthy than the East.

The "founding" of the Eastern Roman Empire has been placed at several key points. Some historians claim it was formed at the founding of Constantinople in 337, others the ascension of Theodosius as Eastern Augustus in 395.

The Eastern Roman Empire survived the fall of Rome, and finally came to an end in 1453. It is playable as the Byzantine Empire in M2TW.

Game Play
The Eastern Roman Empire lies between Europe and Asia and connects Orient and Occident. Due to its location, it has developed a unique culture and military. It combines the power of eastern cataphracts and horse archers with the discipline of Rome's legions. While the Empire's primary enemy is the Sassanid Empire to the east, the approaching barbarian hordes may become a considerable problem as well.
Furthermore, if the people are unhappy and revolt a Roman shadow faction - namely the Eastern Empire Rebels - can emerge; they are a dangerous enemy, as they have powerful Roman troops as well.

Starting Position
The Eastern Roman Empire start the game as occupiers of much of Southeastern Europe, also holding land in Asia Minor, the Levant, and North Africa.

Win Conditions
Hold 34 provinces including Thracia (Constantinople), Aegyptus (Alexandria), Northern Italy (Rome) and Africa (Carthage).

Units
Infantry
*Limitanei
*Legio Lanciarii
*Comitatenses
*Comitatenses First Cohort
*Plumbatarii

Cavalry
*Equites Auxilia
*Hippo-toxotai
*Scholae Palatinae
*Equites Clibinarii
*Equites Cataphractarii
*Imperial Household Guard

Ranged
*Archers
*Eastern Archers
*Onagers
*Ballistae
*Heavy Onagers
*Repeating Ballistae
*Carriage Ballistae
*Scropions

Strategy
At the start of the game the Sassanids to the east will pose the biggest threat. However, you are rich and strong enough to take them out in 10 - 15 turns.

Once the Sassanids have been taken care of, invade North Africa. The WRE will have few troops here and it's four more provinces.

After that just head into Illyria et Dalmacia and Southern Italy.

The Huns and Vandals may pose some threat to you, but the ERE can survive without its European provinces.

Overall the ERE is a relatively easy faction to play as, provided you know what you are doing.

However, while your main threat is to the east, make sure that you are in a good position in the west. The Western Roman Empire has some excellent provinces, and although they field an excellent army, their generals are weak, which should make defeating the western empire much easier than the Sassanids. However do not be over confident when it comes to fighting the WRE; as said earlier they field a might army of good quality infantry. However their weak point is their lack of decent cavalry, which means that your excellent eastern style cavalry will totally destroy both their infantry and their cavalry. The exception to this are the generals' body guard cavalry, which are excellent despite their poor commander. The German Imperial Guards are more than a match for any Easterner cavalry, however once their general is killed the guard will quickly flee the battle.
The Franks are one of the playable factions in the Barbarian Invasion for Rome: Total War. They are in the Barbarian culture group.
Game Play
Starting Position
*Vicus Franki (Tribus Franki)
The Franks start with a city that can provide good troops from the beginning. It is surrounded by potential enemies, though.
The Alemanni are the most direct threat in the south.
The Western Roman Empire lives to the west with large armies nearby.
The Saxons live to the north.
In the east the fearsome Burgundii and Lombardii expand quickly.

Win Conditions
*Capture and hold 20 provinces, including Lugdinensis (Avaricum), Aquitania (Burdigala), Narbonensis (Arles).

Units
Unique Units
*Paladins
Obtainable after the Franks have converted to Christianity and the appropriate religious structure built. They are good heavy cavalry.
*Catholic Priest
Also obtained after Christan conversion. They are a weak unit in close ocmbat, but their chanting gives friendly troops bonuses.
* Axe Heerbann
The basic heerbann unit. They carry a powerful long-handled axe and are relatively cheap to build. They can form shieldwall.
* Sword Heerbann
With better armor and a stabbing sword, sword heerbann provide a strong front against the enemy. They can form shieldwall.
* Francisca Heerbann
These are the elite heerbann and the most famous Frankish troops. They carry several francisca throwing axes to throw at the enemy. They can also perform a terrifying warcry.
AAR's
History
The Franks were a people originating from around the Lower Rhine River in Germany. They migrated southwards into Gaul, resulting in fights with the Roman Empire and other people. As there were several different tribes of Franks, some chose to raid Roman lands while others chose to join them- and most chose to ally with them. The most prominent of the tribes were the Salians, who remained a threat to the Romans. The Merovingian kings, who were of Salian roots, united many tribes of the Franks. Their dynasty was founded by King Merovech. Merovech and his sons won many victories over other tribespeople such as the Saxons, Visigoths, and Alemanni. His grandson Clovis I managed to defeat the Romans and control slightly more than half of Gaul (France). After Clovis I died, he left his empire to his four sons who effectively ruled in four different areas. However, when these four sons had sons, wars and disputes did erupt between the divided kingdoms. After one king's death (often of war or assassination), other claimants would try and take hold of the thrones. By this time, many of the Franks had converted to Roman Catholicism. In 570 onwards Brunhilda, a queen of the Franks, ruled as the power behind the thrones of her sons and grandsons. Because of her dealings, many wars went on between the different relatives in the Frankish kingdoms. Also because of her Frankish lands were annexed until there were only two main kingdoms- Austrasia in the east and north of France, where she and her select children ruled and Neustria in the west and south. After Brunhilda and her ruling grandson's death, the Neustria's king, Chlothar II, ruled all the Franks and more or less all of France. However, he was later forced to make his son Dagobert I King of the Austrasias because they wanted a king of their own. Family feud continued as Dagobert inherited all of the Frankish kingdoms on his father's death and had his half-brother's son killed so there were no contestants. As of 632, he was seen as the most powerful Western ruler. He made Paris his capital. After his death, the practice of kings and relatives assassinating and usurping the throne continued. Often the "united" Franks were divided into a few kingdoms ruled by rivaling sons, brothers, or cousins. Charles Martel (688 – October 741) was a military general (only defeated once in battle) who worked for the Merovingian rulers. He was a brilliant general and extremely popular with the people. He is often known for "defeating" the Muslims at Tours, although in reality the two armies never even fought. He became a military leader and ruled de facto. Because of the Catholic Church backed him, his son Philip the Short was elected to be king by the Pope, starting the Carolingian dynasty. Philip ruled from 751-768 as a protector of the Church and a uniter of the Frankish kingdoms. His sons Charlemagne and Carloman succeeded him. After his brother's death in 771, he became sole ruler of the Kingdom of Franks. This was the golden age of the Franks, where the entire land that would become France was under a single monarch (except Britanny) after his campaigns, as well as all the area the Rhine River covers, Belgium, almost all of Germany, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and more than half of Italy. It was the biggest European-based empire since the Fall of Rome and would remain that way for many years to afterwards. Under Charlemagne Frankish learning, laws, arts, language, and military improved. He was staunchly Catholic, but rather tolerant, lawful, strong, intelligent, and reasonable. Although many years of wars and disputes followed his death, he truly did set the way for a "France" as we know it.

The Western Roman Empire is one of the playable factions in Barbarian Invasion.

By the time of Barbarian Invasion, the Roman Empire is well and truly in decline. The Western Roman Empire is the larger, but poorer part of the old Empire. It is most at risk from the oncoming Barbarian Hordes. However, all is not lost. The WRE can still field an impressive army, and a skilled player can bring the Empire to new heights - including reunification with the East.

Game Play
Starting Position
At the beginning of the game, the Western Roman Empire ranges from the British Isles in the north to the deserts of Africa in the south. It is the largest faction in the game, controlling Italy, Gaul, Illyria, Pannonia, Britain, Spain and a small part of North Africa.
The Empire borders the Celts in the north, the Franks and Alemanni in the northeast, the Eastern Roman Empire in the east and the Berbers in the south.

Win Conditions
In order to achieve victory the Westerm Roman Empire must control 34 provinces, including Northern Italy (Rome), Africa (Carthage), Taraconensis (Tarraco) and Thracia (Constantinople).

Units
Infantry Units
*Peasants
*Limitanei
*Foederati Infantry
*Comitatenses
*Auxilia Palatina
*Plumbatarii
*Praeventores
*Comitatenses First Cohort
*Catholic Priest

Ranged Units
*Archers
*Bucellarii
*Onagers
*Ballistae
*Heavy Onagers
*Repeating Ballistae
*Carriage Ballistae
*Scorpions

Cavalry Units
*Foederati Cavalry
*Sarmatian Auxilia
*Equites Sagitarii
*Scholae Palatinae
*Imperial German Bodyguard

Strategy guides
Playing as the Western Empire is the toughest challenge in the game. However the easiest way in which to deal with this, is to let cities rebel and recapture them, exterminating the population. This will give you a fresh start and will also increase the value of the settlement. However to make the empire a prosporos place you must kill Valentinus the emperor, his attributes mean that he is a terrible administator and an even worse General. For the sake of the Empire he must be killed. However the settlements you must keep hold of are Rome, Ravanna and Carthage, as these three on there own make up the majority of your income in the first turns of the game.

RTW: The Western Roman Empire Empire Walkthrough, .

With the WRE you need to destroy the Celts and Berbers, exterminate their cities as your economy is in tatters. Spain will lose you a lot of money so sort that out asap. Attacking the barbarian factions is all very well, but in reality it simply speeds up the time when the hordes attack you. What I did was simply build loads of camps on my frontier with the barbarian and repel any invasions. The Hordes will appear soon enough and weakened. while you are waiting for them take Africa and start assulting the Sassanids and the ERE. Once you have defeated the hordes you now have vast amounts of men to swarm the Barbarians with. The ultimate destruction of all of these peoples will be quick and easy. Leave garrisons and head east. Destroy and maim anyone whom you come across. By now the in the East your legions should have reduced the Sassanids to nothing and you can perform a pincer movement through the ERE.

The world is yours and the WRE has been restored to its rightful place! More importantly however, you have completed Barbarian Invasion with the most difficult faction on the game!!!

Strategy guides
The Goths start the game inhabiting the fertile lands surrounding Colonia Dacia, which they have wrested from the Romans. They will have time to recruit a very few permanent units before they are ousted by the Vandals. It is best to clear out just before the Vandals invest the town, and destroy anything you can so you keep the value rather than leaving it for the Vandals. When the town falls, you will receive several horde armies with horse archers and some good infantry units. Your campaign should focus on mid and southern Europe, staying ahead of the Vandals until you get to Italia. You will want to sack Ravenna, Rome and Tarentum before anyone else does, as the take from these cities is very rich. You will also want to check out Gaul and cities like Massilia, Augusta Trevororum and the Roman cities on the eastern tier of Gaul. If you can sack these cities first, it leaves less for the Vandals, Sarmatians and Huns and gives you that much more denari. And that means those other tribes must fight harder for less and spend their precious manpower against each other.

Finally, when all of western and middle Europe is awash in anarchy and the Western Roman armies are reduced to a shell of their former strength, you will want to go back to the Italian peninsula and take over the rich cities of Ravenna, Rome and Tarentum, timing it so that the last of your horde units are able to take the third city. Here, you will realize the value of your early recruiting before leaving Colonia Dacia. The more spearmen you recruited early on, the more permanent units you will have to defend against other tribes trying to come against you now that you have settled down. Plus, the cash you got sacking cities and not settling down earlier comes in handy to repair the expensive markets, ports, stables and barracks you now own so you can hold onto your new kingdom and to grow your economy. Taking all of Italy gives you a very narrow front to defend in the north, with no one able to attack your flanks.

You will want to build your forces so that you can hold what you have and field a strong army to go back and take Constantinople. Thesssalonica and Athens are also very desirable trade centers with their well-developed ports and markets.

Win Conditions
Take 10 settlements, including Alexandria and Carthage

Units
Tough, desert-oriented infantry and light, powerful cavalry. They have no siege weapons and very few heavy units.

Unique Units
Hillmen- Tough, dependable infantry that can hurl javelins before charging; they have a moderate defense, and dug in on a hill they can hold an enemy for a long time.

Berber Axemen- These guys mostly suck. They have terrible morale, will get cut to pieces under missile fire, and only gain a minimal bonus from fighting in the desert. They are, however, useful against heavily armored enemies, and if properly positioned they can maul a unit of Comitatenses.

Mountain Men- Very tough, good morale, and can be absolute beasts in the desert. MM's make a great garrison for your home cities, and they should generally be stationed somewhere important(Alexandra/Carthage/possibly Tingi)

Desert Archers- Basic archers, nothing special

Moorish Raiders/Camel Raiders/Berber Lancers-Good, fast cavalry all, Moors are the best
Spear Warbands: The men of a spear warband are effective against cavalry and most infantry, but lack the discipline of more "civilized" troops.
Night Raiders: Night raiders are lightly armed shock troops whose appearance alone is fearful!

Screeching Women: German screeching women think nothing of participating in a battle, wailing encouragement to their own men as they fight, and screaming defiance at the enemy to unnerve them.

Chosen Axemen: Double-handed axes are intimidating weapons, especially in the hands of chosen axemen. These men can hack a hole in almost any enemy battle line.

Berserkers: Berserkers are extremely ferocious, aggressive, indomitable warriors with no thought for personal safety once the rage of battle comes upon them. Once they go berserk you have no control over them and they are also very expensive so be careful with them.

Gothic Cavalry: Gothic cavalry are an aristocratic - if such a word can be applied to barbarians - heavy cavalry elite of the German tribes

Overview
A naturally unplayable (although they can be unlocked by modification of the game files, more information on which can be found on this page) faction found in all of the Total War games, the rebels are unique. They represent all minor states and nations that are not in the game as separate factions. When a settlement has low public order, usually lower than 70%, rebellion will occur. When a settlement rebels there are two options:

*It will become a Rebel city and will have average army consisted of units that usually can be recruited there

*Instead of revolting to the Rebels it will return to its previous (for example: if the Romans conquer Carthage and the faction Carthage dies and later on in the game the Egyptians take Carthage but it rebels, it will become Roman) or historical owner, ex. Cyrene often revolts and becomes Greek or Macedon

There are also various brigands that represent thieves, robbers and other disruptive influences in a province. They will appear inside territories and regions under control of other factions, including yours. They must be repelled fast because they have several damaging effects on your economy:

*Devastation: Simulating the destruction of roads, villages, farmland and everything around them, which harms your economy.

*Blocked Roads: When brigands are near or on your roads, it will reduce the trade income for that settlement.

*Watchtowers: If a rebel army moves onto one of your watchtowers, it will remove the sight bonus that you receive from that watchtower.

There are also sea brigands, known as pirates. When they appear they prey upon passing ships and sometimes are brave enough to blockade a port.

Types of Rebels
*Brigands and Pirates will attack almost any faction. In this they can block trade routes and ambush passing armies. Pirates will also cut off sea-trade routes and blockade ports.
*Deserters and Freed slaves are any troops or slaves that had once belonged to a faction. They usually hide in the countryside and tend not to rob factions. Freed slaves usually are made up of Peasent units as well as Town-watchmen units. Yet Deserters are much more skilled and tend to have better units. Sometimes, the Deserter armies maybe led by a General. Desert, they may even attempt to capture a city.
*Independent Kingdoms and Rebel Cities are Rebel-faction cities that have been either over-run or conquered. Non-faction cities which have existed independently since the beginning of the game and have never been conquered. They usually have some very basic military units like Militia Hoplites or Town Watch, although if left unconquered, they may grow and develop a stronger/large amount of units.
*Amazon Rebels can only be found in the province of Hyperboria which, in the game, is located far to the north (in what is now Russia) and is difficult to reach due to the terrain. They have their own very powerful unique units, including Amazon chariots and gigantic war elephants which is a game secret called "Yubtseb" ("bestbuy" backwards).
*The Gladiator Uprising may appear in settlements that have an Arena or better. They are usually just Gladiator units but do also differ. In reality, they are similar to Spartacus.
*Judean Zealots are units that are created whenever, only, Jerusalem revolts against the faction that rules the city. They are good infantry with good morale. They can be very difficult if you are using weaker type units.
*Helot Uprising are a group of Rebel Slaves that overthrow Sparta and tend to have high morale.

Bear in mind that you can also bribe Rebels and by doing so you have a higher chance of buying them out/into your army.

Barbarian Invasion
In the first expansion pack for Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion, the rebels start with the following settlements:

*Campus Frisii (Tribus Frisii)
*Campus Chattii (Tribus Chattii)
*Campus Marcomanni (Tribus Marcomanni)
