It might be a good idea to cite sources, here. Links to Wikipedia probably suffice for us . . .
-->
Various criticisms about historical inaccuracies have been made about Medieval 2: Total War. Whilst the game is obviously designed around a historical setting, some compromises may have been made to balance good game play versus total historical realism.

In some cases the reasons why the game would not be designed for total historic accuracy can be easily imagined, for example:

*The name "Budapest" is used for one city when in fact the settlement there was three separate cities (Buda, Óbuda and Pest) until quite recently, (see Wikipedia article on Budapest). However, three separate cities would not fit well on the map in terms of game play and Budapest is likely to be the name most players would be familiar with.
* Spain did not own Toledo until 1088. Giving it to the Moors would've made Spain incredibly weak early in the campaign.
*Each campaign turn is two in-game years, but the characters in the campaign do not age at the same rate. If they did age two years every turn, however, the characters would die much earlier, and may lead to the extinction of the faction due to lack of heirs.
Mods Aimed at Improved Historical Accuracy
As with Rome: Total War the modding community has produced or is in the process of producing many modifications designed to enhance the historical accuracy of the game in some way.

Released mods that deal with specific aspects are:

*Character Names Project - which gives more authentic period names (with proper spellings and accents, etc.)

*Xenophonia - Replaces several factions' speech with their native languages, making them speak e.g. German, French or Italian instead of broken English.

(more mods and the aspects they deal with should be entered here)

The Saxons of Medieval II: Total War only appear in "The Norman Conquest" tutorial campaign, where they control London and Nottingham. The campaign, starting in 1066, pits the Normans against the Saxons for control of England. The Saxons are isolated in their strongholds, and can be easily picked off relatively quickly after completing the mandatory steps of the tutorial.
Rebels are an unplayable faction in M2TW. If you make them playable using by editing the descr_strat.txt file they will apprear as "slave" instead of rebel. There are also no known bugs to having the rebels unlocked.

Gameplay

There are a few things to get used to while playing as the rebels.

-The only naval unit that the rebels can create is a war galley (pirate cogs appear at arbitrary times)

-If you lose a battle all your forces that participated in the battle will be killed

-Armies and agents come onto the map at random

-You start with 5000 florins, but it will go quickly and greatly into the negitives

-You may (although rare) get a region because it rebeled

-You have no family tree and no faction leader, however every turn (or almost) a message will appear asking if you want to adopt ______ as the benefactor

Strategy

-If you don't start off with a heretic you may want to start over until you get one

-Try to start making money as fast as possible

-When taking out a faction try to either only eliminate the family (that way you don't have to take the city) or keep the family members alive so you get them as generals.

Note

-also see Rebels Details (M2TW Faction)
