300 Warlords of Sparta is a modification for Rome Total War: Alexander. It takes place in Greece and a portion of Asia Minor during the second Persian invasion of Greece, in 480 BC. It aims to re-create the Greco-Persian Wars through the inclusion of 2 distinct campaigns; The "300 'Warlords edition'" based on and influenced by the "300" movie and the "300 'Classic edition'" which introduces loads of new units in accordance with the time period, though that is not to say that historical accuracy has always been pursued.

The mod contains brand-new, fully retextured and re-modeled factions. The Greek Cities faction and the Persian faction are playable. A third, rebel faction is also included.

A number of scripted historical battles are also included in the Mod. For example, after the Battle of Thermopylae is over and some time spent in consolidating your alliances has passed, you will be automatically thrust in the Battle of Plataea. The result of such battles will have direct consequences over the course of your campaign.

In addition, various scripted missions have been introduced to the modification. Much like the way missions in MTW2 work, The Oracle's missions are mostly centered around liberating provinces which are under Persian occupation. There are considerable rewards to be earned upon each mission's success.

Furthermore, on capturing a Greek region the Spartans can "Liberate" the population by occupying the city and providing their benevolent form of government, or opt to "Disperse Liberated Population" among their other provinces. The Spartans may not "Exterminate" sympathetic Greek populations, however that option is still available if they capture a non-greek (Persian or Barbarian) region.

Unique, historically accurate generals such as Pausanias are featured in the mod, each complete with his own icon, backstory and traits, while two new buildings for the Spartans have also been implemented. The Krypteria, the Spartan secret police, conferring Public order bonuses due to law, and the House Of Gerusia; the Spartan Elder council, having a similar effect.

Rome: Total War (sometimes abbreviated as RTW) is a strategy game in the Total War Series which combines a turn-based campaign map with real time battles. The game was developed by the Creative Assembly and was released on September 22, 2004.

Gameplay
See Rome: Total War and Expansions for game-play considerations common to Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion and Alexander.

Campaign Play
The Imperial Campaign starts in 270 BC and ends in 14 AD. Each year consists of two turns. The player controls one of the playable factions on the campaign map with the goal of conquering new regions in order to achieve victory. He can build various structures, expand his cities and move around characters. When the armies of two factions meet each other, they will engage in battle. The player can choose between auto-resolving the battle and fighting it himself on the 3D battle map.

The Campaign Map
Rome: Total War's Imperial Campaign map includes Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, parts of North Africa and the Middle East. The campaign map offers many different features. Along with various locations such as settlements and ports there are also several different campaign map characters. Amongst those are generals, captains, diplomats, spies and assassins. The settlements and characters are controlled by the different factions which fight against each other in order to achieve supremacy. Each faction can only see areas which its characters have scouted and regions which are out of sight are covered by the Fog of War.
Factions
:*See main article: RTW Factions

Initial play is restricted to the three playable Roman factions, the Julii, Scipii and Brutii with other factions becoming accessible after successful completion of a campaign. The three playable Roman factions are allied to each other and the Senate. The Senate issues missions to each of the Roman factions, successful completion of Senate missions improves your factions standing with the Senate. A high popularity level is necessary to be able to initiate a civil war against one of the other Roman factions.

Other factions designed to be played after successful completion of your first campaign are:
Egypt, Seleucid Empire, Carthage, Parthia, Gaul, Germania , Britannia and the Greek Cities.

Battle Play
Battles in Rome: Total War can be epic events containing thousands of individual soldiers.
:*See Rome: Total War and Expansions for overview of the battle play common to all three games.

:*See Battle Map Play - RTW for elements specific to Rome: Total War.

Historic Accuracy
Various criticisms have been levelled at the game in regards to historical inaccuracies see:
General Information
The Rise of Persia Mod is set in the 6th century BC, a most fascinating era of mankind’s history. It was the time of four grand empires having divided the known world from the Mediterranean Sea to the River Oxus in the east among themselves after the seemingly invincible Assyrian might had been broken. All of them had ventured through great struggles in their past for becoming the dominant superpower deciding the fate of all mankind.

Situation
In the east lay the vast dominion of the Median lords, the undisputed masters of the Iranian Plateau, ruling territory from Asia Minor to the most distant places of east Iran. These dreaded Iranian warriors had overcome the mighty Assyrians, the Kimmerians and the Skythians, they had forged an empire by the means of war that nobody could match in size or power. Yet their wise kings had now been avoiding open conflict on all fronts, making alliances with the Babylonian heir of the Assyrian realm.

Babylon, located deep in the cradle of civilization, had finally revolted successfully against the Assyrian murderers and flattened their seat of power, utterly destroying their capital Niniveh in retaliation. Babylon’s Great Kings took most of their territory including that of the rebellious Judah kingdom in the Levant. Brute force had made them submit, but clemency – and captivity – ensured their loyalty. Babylon and Media had been friends since the Assyrian Downfall, but there was enough space left to conquer.

The shadow of the Assyrians was long and their final end had also freed the time-honoured Kingdom of Egypt. The 26th Dynasty had successfully reclaimed its inherent place among the super powers again. Although their great Pharaohs had to face severe problems due to growing mercenary influence and also from the threats posed by Libyans, Greeks and Babylon, they were able to prevail over all these.

An ally of Egypt was Lydia, the most powerful Nation of Asia Minor. Their war-mongering kings of the Mermnads’ Dynasty hold sway with an iron fist over the lands between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Nobody had ever defeated them and their lance-wielding cavalry is as feared as Iranian archers or Greek hoplites. Even the gargantuan Medes could not defeat them and the Greeks of Ionia suffered the same fate as the rest of Asia Minor.

These four super powers came to terms of trade and co-existed more or less peacefully, despite some grim tensions between them regarding their bellicose past. Now was also the time when the Greek city states grew to a potentially serious contender for these powers. If an ambitious city state managed to master all of Hellas then a new and dangerous power would threaten to unbalance the tense equilibrium of the four empires. But while the colony of Kyrene in north Africa could hold their own even against the Pharaoh, the Ionian Greeks were in submission. However, the true reason of their rise was not war, but trade making them rich.

On the other end of the known worlds were the Indians, not yet involved in any of the others’ business. The heavy incursions of the northern nomads, which had devastated Asia and Europe in the past were over, nevertheless everyone needed to watch them carefully. In the south, Nubians and Arabians were in danger of being conquered by the expanding powers, who had decided not to engage each other.

Nothing seemed to stop their tetrarchy, but the world changed forever, when one man stood up against the Medes. His name was Kuruš and he was the leader of the ignominious Persian tribe. He vanquished the Medes, crushed the Lydians and conquered Babylon. He created the Persian Empire, one of the most splendid the world has ever seen. However, at the beginning of our mod he is just a tribal leader, alone against the super powers.

The year is 559 BC and the Rise of Persia is about to begin.

Factions
Rise of Persia features 19 factions, of which 10 are playable in the current beta release.
Mod Information
History
The Rise of Persia modification has approximately been founded near May 2005, by Faeghi. Originally, its name was Persia: Total War, but after long discussions the new name Rise of Persia was chosen. This name suits our mod the most, since it describes the setting better. It's not just Persia:TW, there are factions at the start of the era which are way more powerful than Persia itself. Since historically, it WAS Persia that rose to power, we chose this name.

In December 2005, the leadership of our mod was transferred to Nero666, and we started using our website at Riseofpersia.com intensively, for development. Soon after, many new members joined our mod, and we started to progress fast.

In March 2006, our first open beta was released, with six playable factions (Persia, Lakedaimon, Athenai, Taras, Ionia and Pandya). This was still based on RTW 1.2.

Soon after, in June, we successfully finished the transfer to RTW 1.5, and re-released our beta.

During the summer holidays, there was a lot of progress, and some new members joined our mod, giving development a great boost. In November 2006, we released a new beta, entitled Beta 2, with 10 playable factions (Lydia, Bâb-Ilû, Kemet, Parsa, Kyrene, Poleis Iades, Taras, Athenai, Lakedaimon, Bessoi), and many improvements, including unique systems.

Team
Our team consists of three magnificent historians, five extraordinary graphics artists, three outstanding coders/mappers and two unbelievably good musicians, most people doing more than one job at a time. Nero666 bears the title Team Leader, but in fact everyone leads the project a little or alot into the good direction, making the atmosphere very nice to work in.

*Nero666 - Team leader, lead coder, mapper, saviour

**The Britannia Campaign: With England, Wales, Scotland, Norway, Ireland. All of them are trying to gain dominance over the British Isles.
**The Crusades Campaign: Two alliances fight against each other: The Jerusalem and the Antioch face Egypt and the Turks while the Byzantine Empire plays a neutral role. The emergent Mongol faction is hostile towards all other nations.
**The Americas Campaign: Aztecs, Maya, Apache, Tarasken, Chichimeken, Tlaxkalteken and Spanish Settlers under Cortés struggle for supremacy in the Americas. New France and New Britain are emergent factions which will appear later in the game.
**The Teutonic Campaign: The Teutonic Order, the Holy Roman Empire, Poland, Lithuania, Denmark, Novgorod and Norway fight for control over the Baltic Sea and northeastern Europe.

New Features
*Moats added around castles
*Special Abilities for the historical persons in the 4 campaigns
**Richard I of England can collect fleeing troops
**Emperor Manuel of Byzantium can "confuse" enemy units so that they start to fight amongst themselves.
*The campaigns have different targets and a different way of playing it. In the Eastern, the religion plays a big role (because of unrest and unit development -> you can only build Teutonic knights in a Catholic area) in the New World if you play the Spanish have only few Units and you have to look for alliances and trading routes.
*More units on a battlefield.
*Forts with water around it and permanent forts. The latter can also be conquered and used by other factions.
*More and different mission targets: A noble man appears and asks for your help in a combat. If you are successful, your reward will depend on how many enemy soldiers you killed.
*In the Britain campaign, England's enemies can form an alliance with renegade English aristocrats. They will ask for help with conquering a town. If the player complies and gives the town to them after the victory, they will found a new anti-English faction: the "Baron's Alliance."

Total War
Rome Total War: Alexander is part of the Total War series and was released by SEGA on June 19, 2006. It was developed by the Creative Assembly and is the second official expansion for Rome: Total War.

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm8/ShadowMewtwoMan/2893-1.jpg
Overview
Alexander features a new campaign map ranging from Egypt in the west to Persia in the east. The only faction which the player can control during the campaign is Macedon. He takes on the role of Alexander the Great in an attempt to sweep eastwards and to capture almost every settlement on the map in 100 turns or less. However, in the 'Custom Battles' the player can also take control of three other factions, namely Dahae, India and Persia. Furthermore, there are also six new historical battles. But due to the small scope of the expansion it shouldn't be considered a 'full game' but rather a minor addition to the original Rome: Total War.

Features
Rome Total War - Alexander has seen quite a few changes to the engine, as well as new in game features.

New factions
Rome Total War - Alexander brings four new playable, and some unplayable races into the mix. The first of these which the player controls during the campaign is Macedon: a phalanx-happy faction with missile troops and cavalry for support, reminiscent of the Greeks from the original game. They are based control all of Greece and Macedon at the start of the game and boarder Thrace to the west and Illyria to the North, their goal is the conquest of the Persian Empire.

Next, only playable in Custom Battles are the Dahae: This represents 4 diffrent factions in the main campaign which all have the same units and skins etc - the factions are Dahae which is located in the north east of the map, Scythia which is located in the center north of the map and finally Illyria and Thrace which are located in the west of the map.

Third are the Indians: Fairly similar to the Sassanids and Carthaginians from the previous games, these are desert warriors packing a punch with their elephants. This faction however does not exist in the main campaign and is only playable through custom battles.

Lastly come the Persians: Similar to the Indians in a few respects, except for the fact they rely on cavalry more than infantry. Of course, they come with elephant-mounted troops, altogether they have and flexible selection of troops. This faction controls most of the map and controls Egypt, Arabia, Babylon, Asia Minor, Armenia, Persia and India.

New Units
There are a number of new units for each faction. Many of these include new historical units that would be in Alexander's actual army at that time. The same is with the Persian Army and other factions.

The Persians

They have a flexible selection of troop types, including light Hyrcanian cavalry, horse archers, missile and heavy chariots, mercenary Greek bodyguards, and heavy Bactrian cavalry. Their infantry is mostly light, and with a wealth of missile troops like Median Archers and Persian Peltasts. Their specialty troops are mercenary Greek hoplites and the Immortals, which fire a bow and carry a spear for self-defense.

The Kingdom of Macedon

Also a flexible faction, but built around a core of heavy troops. They lack missile troops besides javelinmen, and must rely on mercenary archers and slingers.
They have hoplites and phalangites, along with hypaspists for infantry. Hypaspists act as a "prototype legionary", with a swath of javelins and a shorter spear for close combat.
Macedon also has a wide range of cavalry, including Prodromoi, Thessalians, and famous Companions. Macedon can also recruit horse archers and median archers when they capture specific provinces.

They also of course are led by Alexander the Great. If he dies in battle or of old age before the campaign is complete the player loses the campaign. Alexander dies in 100 turns, giving the player 100 turns to complete the campaign.

The Dahae

Armies made up of mostly infantry. They are much like Gaul and Dacia in vanilla Rome, with spear warbands and swordsmen. They have good archers, but lack in heavy cavalry. They have barbarian cavalry (essentially the same as in Rome) and horse archers.

India

In single player campaign they do not appear as a faction but as a rebel stack near Taxila. They have many good archers, such as the Indian Longbowmen and Female Archers. They do not have much melee infantry, having just one unit in the form of Indian Spearmen. They are so-so troops, and can not hold against the heavier phalanxes or sustained missile fire for long.
India has a variety of fear units, including scythed chariots and elephants.

Engine Changes
The Alexander engine is different from the RTW engine. It has all the features of RTW, but also some new ones.
*The DMB limit has increased. In vanilla RTW, it was 255, but not anymore. Wlesmana from LOTR - TW is said to have put over 330 different entries in without a problem.
*New campaign changes as well. Now you can have faction specific mercenaries, unlike in RTW where mercenaries were available to any faction. Also, you can choose a faction to never attack another faction. While I am a little blind as to the extent of this, it may turn out to be a useful feature.
*For a list of changes and how they affect modding, see here.
However, as Alexander was not built from the Barbarian Invasion engine, many features from Barbarian Invasion, such as hording and shieldwall, are unavailable.

Technical
System Requirements
Any PC that can run RTW/BI should be able to run Alexander.

Official Minimum
P3 1.0GHZ
256MB RAM
Graphics card with 64mb Video RAM
3400mb hard drive space.

Official Recommended
P4 1.5GHZ
512mb RAM
Graphics card with 128mb Video RAM
3400mb hard drive space

MY Recommended
p4 2ghz
1gb RAM (Much faster loading times 2gb is even better)
GeForce 7600gt 256mb VRAM for decent performance. It will work on a 6600 decently RTW is unoptimized so a 8 series would be even better.
3400mb hard drive space.

RTW:A also requires a DVD drive.

Install Issues
Some problems may be experienced with the installation of the Alexander expansion if your original RTW installation is not patched to the right version, or if you have insufficient space on your C: drive (regardless of where game is installed) see this thread on the official forums for details and patch download links.
