Medieval Total War – Redux attempts to create a improved and enhanced version of the base game through a variety of methods.

History
Redux was released for the first time in 8th Aug 2008, as “MTW-Redux 1.0”. This was to set the template of the “old Redux”, which was much closer to the original MTW experience in most regards. The final release with such traits would be “MTW-Redux 1.0b”, which was released in October 2008.

In March 2011, after many delays, the first open beta-release of a “new Redux” finally hit the world. This new release, dubbed “the RXB1000”, brought many changes and improvements to Redux, both in designs, delivered experience and appearance. It had little in common with the original game and it offered many features that were new and unheard of in previous Redux releases. It was basically the template for what is considered as Redux today. With each new release after the RXB1000, many bugs and errors have been “killed” and solved upon detection in following releases, resulting in an increasingly reliable and polished game-experience in later releases. The latest release - made in 24th April 2012 - is the “RXB1003”.
Description
Redux is essentially a better Medieval: Total War in many ways. It improves many aspects of the game such as audio, graphics, faction rosters and the AI among much more. It's main campaign is RX-classic which is the default campaign spanning from 700-1260 AD over a period of 560 turns with the goal of world domination. Redux can run on both V.1.1 or V.2.01-engines, the latter require an additional upgrade – the VI-upgrade - available as a separate download (and to be installed after Redux). The differences between the two versions are nominal in terms of game-experience.
Features
Redux has plenty. In sheer graphics it easily ranks among the most extensive and ambitious works ever created for MTW and it greatly improves the visual experience of the game. At the same time Redux also overhauls nearly everything else in the game from the tech tree to the AI and beyond. Many of these changes have been re-designed from the ground up. Other things like the typical era-progression is removed totally, as is everything related to gun-powder. All the numerous changes combined enable Redux to deliver new levels of complexity, diversity and challenge. In other words, it is much harder to play Redux then a standard game.
AI
The AI has been created from scratch to take advantage of the new troops, buildings and upgrades. Along with It's numerous improvement, many bugs that plagued the AI in vanilla no longer appear in Redux.
*The AI will usually be more aggressive, active and resilient.
*The AI will manage it's provinces more sensibly.
*The AI will typically build bigger, better and more balanced armies. This includes upgrades. The AI is no stranger to advanced troops, provided it also has the necessary resources for it.
*The AI can manage it's fleets competently which is unusual for a TW game. It may establish trade-routes over seas. Some factions build more ships then others and pirate-fleets may also roam the seas. As a result the AI can and will do seaborne invasions, this includes the rebels.
Battles
Redux features and entirely new battle model compared to vanilla, it is more diverse and provides a tougher challenge due to it's unforgiving nature and increased lethality. Your skills will be tested by the higher number of variables you will need to consider.
*Mercenary's feature prominently. They are more distinct while being less of an advantage to the player.
*The unit rosters have also been "reduxed" so to speak. They've been reworked to be more advanced while allowing more specialisation due to it's increased diversity. The larger unit roster helps this greatly. While each faction does have it's own separate roster, culture and region has been given increased importance. This add variety to both yours and the AIs armies.
*Tech trees have been reworked to be larger while also being more advanced with greater choice of specialisation and diversity. Your faction plays a less important role than it die in vanilla, in Redux your cash and your culture are the predominant factors.
Factions
Redux has included 18 factions by design, they are divided into “regular”, “optional” and “closed”-factions (not for the player). Regular factions are typically more complex, challenging, diverse and difficult - and offer a full experience in visuals – these factions and the experience they provide are representative of what Redux was intended to be as a game. Optional factions are typically less complex and challenging, have bonuses somehow, are easier to handle and offers only limited visuals in some way, they are regarded as optional because of this. Optional factions are exceptions, treated and regarded as such and not generally representative of a full Redux experience like regular factions. Closed factions are factions not intended for the player by default designs ,the reasons why a faction ended up in this category is case-sensitive. Overall, the smaller number of factions compared to vanilla allows each to be more distinct and the AI performs better as well.

*6 regular factions, these are England, France, Spain, Italy, Poland and the German HRE.
*5 optional factions, these are Byzantium, Russia, Saracens, Moors, and the Norse.
*7 closed factions, these are Aragon, Portugal, Hungary, Papacy, Burgundy, Lombardy and (pagan) Lithuania.
Map
The map is greatly improved over vanilla.
*It's much more colourful and certainly more pleasing to the eye. The map is just as large as the vanilla map albeit with re-designed regions, these help give a more realistic experience. This also includes the sea region, this leads to better AI performance and more dynamic play.
*Along with the re-designed map the game economy has been changed, there is overall less money available to everyone meaning harder choices will have to be made. This is accomplished though the use of higher prices, redesigned trading and less easy cash.
*Every faction with the exception of the Papacy has more titles along with existing titles being reworked.
Audio
The audio of the game has been reworked all over
*No battle music, this has been removed so that players can fully concentrate on the battle and not miss some vital information.
*The main menu theme has been changed to provide the mod with It's own unique feel. Various other sounds have been changed as well.
Miscellaneous
*Redux is fully Windows 7 compatible.
*Regional stability and rebellions has been reworked totally.
*Graphics in general have been greatly improved along with new character portraits.
*Game pacing in general is much faster. Things will happen faster due to the new designs, dynamics and AI.
History
Redux was first released on September 07, 2008, It's latest version RXB1003 was released on the 24th of April 2012.
It also has a version that is compatible with the Viking Invasion expansion and the extra features inherent to the expansion.
*The AI is no stranger to highend troops, provided it also has the necessary resources for it.
*The AI can manage it's fleets competently which is unusual for a TW game. It may establish trade-routes over seas. Some factions build more ships then others and pirate-fleets may also roam the seas.
*The AI can and will do seaborne invasions, this includes the rebels.
Factions
Redux features 18 factions of which 6 are playable at the start-the English, French, Germans, Italians, Spanish and Polish. A further 4 are unlockable-the Byzantines, Moors, Saracens and Norse. Despite the smaller number of factions compared to vanilla they're more distinct and the AI can handle itself better
Map
The map is greatly improved over vanilla.
*It's much more colourful and certainly more pleasing to the eye. The map is just as large as the vanilla map albeit with re-designed regions, these help give a more realistic experience.
*Along with the re-designed map the game economy has been changed, there is overall less money available to everyone meaning harder choices will have to be made.
Audio
The audio of the game has had several changes:
*No battle music, this has been removed so that players can fully concentrate on the battle and not miss some vital information.
*The main menu theme has been changed to provide the mod with It's own unique feel. Various other sounds have been changed as well.
Miscellaneous
*Redux is fully Windows 7 compatible.
*Stability and rebellions have been reworked totally.
*Mercenary's feature prominently.
*Graphics in general have been greatly improved along with new character portraits.
A sloop of war is usually ketch-rigged with two masts. These small vessels handle well in restricted waters.

Overview
The ability to navigate in exceptionally shallow or dangerous waters makes sloops very useful in such seas as the reef-strewn waters of the Caribbean. They can also operate without the need for extensive onshore naval facilities nearby. They are also extremely useful as fleet auxiliaries, carrying out communications tasks and vital inshore scouting work, and can hunt down smaller prey such as privateers and small enemy cargo vessels. A sloop-of-war (sometimes a corvette in French service) is a different vessel from a civilian, merchant sloop, having a flush deck, two square-rigged masts, guns, and a larger crew.

Historically, a post captain would rarely command a ship this small. The commanding officer was the “master and commander” (this is the origin of the modern naval rank of commander), and held the formal rank of lieutenant. Captain Cook RN commanded HMS Resolution, a sloop converted from a collier (coal ship), on his epic Pacific voyages and was highly satisfied with its performance. Sloop captains could be aggressive: before his promotion to post captain, Thomas Cochrane commanded the 14-gun HMS Speedy and managed to capture “El Gamo”, a Spanish xebec of 32 guns with a crew six times larger than his own!

Details
Sloops are very lightly armed, speedy, and cheap vessels available at the beginning of a campaign to any faction with a port. Although sloops are sufficient for very early naval engagements, their lack of firepower ensures that they are easily outclassed by other ships in later periods. Sloops are less heavily armed than brigs, but are speedier.

Sloops do not boast the firepower or manpower of brigs; however, they are slightly more resilient to the effects of grapeshot and chainshot, although being light ships they cannot hope to withstand a concentrate barrage for long.
Light galleys have sails and oars, and light cannons mounted on platforms above the rowers’ benches.
Game Description
In restricted waters galleys are useful craft, although in any kind of heavy sea they can be dangerous to manage: it would be a brave or foolish captain who risked his galley in the North Sea or Atlantic. Although they do not carry as many guns as a modern sailing vessel, the ability to move independently of the wind is very useful.

The fighting crew of a galley is a relatively small part of the full crew, because the rowers are often convicts or pressed men and aboard only as strong backs, not as stout hearts. Indeed, in some navies the rowers are often more of a threat to the crew than the enemy! The number of men carried also limits the strategic range of a galley: they simply cannot carry enough food and water to sustain the crew for longer than a few days.

Historically, galleys did good service in sheltered waters like the Mediterranean and the Baltic, and the Ottomans, Russians and Swedes all used them in anger. They were also favoured by the Barbary Coast pirates, who could be guaranteed a good supply of slave rowers from captured European merchantmen.

Details
Light galleys are, if possible, even lighter variations of galleys. They are handy sailing vessels in calm waters, although anything more than choppy water tends to immobilize them completely. Galleys and light galleys are deceptively dangerous, sinking much larger vessels with surprising ease due to their propensity to fire cannons very low, allowing them to puncture hulls more effectively.

Alone, Light Galley's are relatively useless, especially if confronted by much larger vessels. However, their high maneuverability, speed, and low profile allow them an advantage. When used alongside of stronger vessels, galleys serve as a distraction and annoyance to the enemy fleet.

The Indiaman is an armed merchant ship, strongly built for the trade routes between Europe and the East. It is not a warship, but can defend itself in need.
Overview
The Indiaman is a three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship of some 1000 tons displacement. Although work for the relatively small crew is hard, there are compensations: they can trade goods in their own right, and make excellent profits by doing so.

Unusually for a merchant ship, an Indiaman carries cargo, passengers, and a good number of guns. Intended to sail from Europe to the other side of the world and back carrying valuable – sometimes priceless – cargoes, these ships have to be able to defend themselves. The passengers expect some creature comforts, being both officers of the owning trade companies and assorted “gentlemen” seeking their fortunes in foreign parts.

Historically, East Indiamen resembled ships of the line, both in their general configuration and paintwork. At the Battle of Pulo Aura (1804), the ambiguous appearance and aggressive handling of a squadron of British Indiamen completely humbugged the French admiral, Charles-Alexandre Linois. He withdrew in the face of “superior” forces. Commodore Nathaniel Dance, of the British Company fleet, received a knighthood and a handsome reward for his cunning.

National navies purchased Indiamen and converted them into troopships or warships.

Details
Indiamen are capable of protecting themselves against smaller vessels. However, against larger vessels, Indiamen are at a severe disadvantage. They hold a slight speed bonus against larger ships, but their small armament makes it difficult for them to effectively offer a good fight. They are best suited to supporting other, larger units, which offer protection to the Indiamen.
HMS Victory is a first rate ship of the line, carrying some 100 guns and a crew of more than 800 men.

Overview
Like all first rates, Victory is not a handy ship, being both slow and unresponsive. Good sailing qualities, however, are secondary to the weight of broadside that she can both deliver and withstand. This is important in a warship that is intended to form the centrepiece of any squadron and act as an admiral’s flagship.

Completed in 1765, Victory is probably the most famous first rate in history, and the only one still in existence. The work of naval architect and genius Sir Thomas Slade, Victory was always intended to be a flagship; the Royal Navy preferred the smaller 74s as battleships. Forty years later, in 1805, she was Horatio Nelson’s flagship at Trafalgar, a battle which gave the Royal Navy undisputed mastery of the world’s oceans for more than a century.

As of 2008, the ship is still the flagship to “CINCNAVHOME”, a rather unromantic NATO-speak acronym for the Royal Navy’s Second Sea Lord. The ship is in dry dock in southern England as part of the Portsmouth Dockyards museum. Modern RN warships still salute the Victory as they enter and leave harbour.

Details
The HMS Victory is recruitable only by Great Britain and the pride of the British fleet. A stronger, sturdier, morale-inspired first rate, Victory is ideal as a flag ship and can best almost any other ship of the line in broadside action. The HMS Victory possesses somewhat less firepower than a standard first rate, to compensate for its its sturdier hull. Aside from these differences, the two ship types are virtually identical. Despite the fact that there is a one unit cap for the HMS victory, multiple ships named HMS Victory may be obtained if the original is captured, allowing the British Faction to build another.
A steamship still uses sails, but the ability to ignore the wind is highly desirable in a warship.

Overview
By fitting a steam engine and all its machinery into an existing hull, naval architects hoped to create a ship-of-the-line not tied to the wind and tide. In this, they were moderately successful. A steamship can sail independently of the prevailing winds, but most still spend a good deal of time under sail. Coal is expensive, and coaling stations are few and far between; steam is not a practical method of strategic movement.

Tactically, however, it is a different story. With powerful guns, a steamship can out-manoeuvre any sailing ship. Admittedly, the idea of going into battle with a fire raging in the belly of his ship is not one that appeals to every captain. Boiler explosions are not entirely unknown either, as safety features are installed as the fancy takes the engineer, not as a matter of course. A stray shot through the engine room can also do terrible damage.

Historically, The conversion of ships of the line to steam was never going to be anything more than a stopgap measure. Steamships, with their dirt and smoke, were not popular with traditionally minded captains, particularly in the British Royal Navy. They expected obsessively high standards of neatness and cleanliness, with no soot and lubricating oil smeared over their nice clean ships.

Details
Steamships are available only to the industrial imperial powers such as Great Britain. They have the unique and powerful advantage of being able to travel even against the wind, although they still recieve speed bonuses if they sail with the wind. Steamships are versatile and reliable in all types of weather, although they do not carry the firepower of the larger ships of the line.

Although steamships lack the sheer number of cannon larger ships of the line possess, they are extremely powerful and will make short work of almost any target. Unfortunately, they are also shorter-ranged than most other cannons, forcing them to usually weather a salvo before they can engage (although this is usually not an issue due to the high mobility steamships have). Steamships still have sails and can still benefit from advantageous winds, although they depend much less on them than other ships.

The third rate is an excellent compromise between firepower and handling qualities. A stable gun platform, it has more guns than many whole armies!
Overview
The third rate, or “74” (from the number of guns aboard), is a supremely practical weapon of war. With a crew of around 700 men, it is a “wooden world” in itself and a statement of national power. A two-deck design, it is strong enough to mount very heavy cannons on its lower gun deck, often 32-pounders. With 18-pounders on the upper gun deck and then 9-pounders in the upper works, it has a devastating broadside. The design and construction means a 74 can withstand horrendous damage in battle.

Historically, the French invented the concept of the 74-gun ship in the mid-18th century. The design was so good that other navies lost no time in copying it or in capturing French ships. French vessels, while well designed, were often made from green timber that “worked” in heavy seas and therefore leaked. Dutch examples had a shallower, broader draft to suit their harbours and shore waters. The few American 74s were extremely strong and well made. British 74s were well constructed too, although there was a regrettable tendency to save money by recycling timbers - complete with timber rot - from older vessels!

Amazingly, HMS Implacable, the last of the third rates, was scuttled in 1949! Built in 1800 by the French, and captured at Trafalgar in 1805, she stayed in service until 1842. Eventually, she ended her days as a coal hulk.

Details
The stronger of the two double-decked vessels, third rates are very suitable for sailing into the thick of the fighting. Third-rates can take a lot of punishment before sinking, and have high morale. Unfortunately, it is also quite sluggish and unresponsive compared to lighter ships, and is not well-suited for engagements against speedy, evasive ships. Third rates still possess enough speed to escape from otherwise fatal confrontations with the largest and most heavily armed of ships, and can still chase down routing ships if they have damaged masts.
A sixth rate is the smallest class of frigate. It is a useful scout for slow battle fleets, and usually has excellent handling characteristics.

Game Description
The Royal Navy system of rating ships defines a “sixth rate” as a small frigate: a single-deck ship, square-rigged, with around 28 nine-pounder guns, and a crew of around 200 men. This is the smallest vessel in the system set out by Samuel Pepys, and the smallest command of a post captain. This means that sixth rate captains are either old men, passed over for command, or young, ambitious officers looking to make their mark. It’s also worth pointing out that, even with “only” 28 nine-pounder cannons at his command, the captain of a sloop has more firepower than many generals ashore!

Historically, the sixth rates’ small size made them handy for scouting work and perfect where speed and good sailing qualities were required. They were a very good counter to privateers in smaller luggers, brigs and sloops; sixth rates can chase them down and have enough guns and men to win the subsequent engagement! They were also extremely useful in blockades, as they could sail in shallow waters and keep close watch on enemy ports.

Overview
Sixth rates are a useful ship for any early fleet. Though they lack the firepower of a fifth rate, they are significantly faster and handier, while still being more durable and having more guns than a brig or a sloop. In fact, sixth rates are often the best ships for those factions that start with a navy. Thus they are extremely useful for catching fast, annoying ships like brigs, sloops, galleys, etc. and allows the larger ships to concentrate on the enemy's stronger ships without having to be bothered by the little ones. They are also good for destroying rocket ships or bomb ketches, as their smaller size and fast speed make it hard to hit with inaccurate rockets or mortar rounds. Larger ships, however, run the risk of being hit and set afire. Also, they can move quickly around ships like galleons, firing chain shot at them to rip their sails or knock down their masts, as they have 500 range as compared to the 400 range of galleons.

Details
Faster than most vessels, the sixth rate suffers from a relative lack of armaments and durability than the fifth rate and above. However, the speed of the vessel allows it to outmaneuver slower opponents, giving it a slight advantage over those vessels.

Game Description
This three-deck warship is a compromise design between the firepower of a first rate ship and the sea-keeping qualities of a third-rate 74. Like many compromises, the result is something that pleases few, but the extra weight of the broadside does compensate for poor sailing qualities. The design does have one unexpected benefit: enemy captains are often quick to identify second rates as much larger ships and, as a result, flee from a “much superior” enemy!

The lower gun deck houses 32-pounders, and this explains the “tumblehome” shape of all ships of the period: the bulge at water level and just above in the hull allowed more room on the lower decks for the recoil of large cannons; the lighter guns on the higher decks did not recoil as much.

Historically, only the British Royal Navy commissioned many ships of this rating; other nations simply built first rates instead. This might be due to the Royal Navy needing to keep large ships on foreign stations as flagships, an assignment that would have been wasteful and expensive for a first rate.

Details
Second rates are the first triple-deck warship and have poor sailing capabilities; however its firepower and manpower easily exceed all of the ships preceding it. Second rates can be expected to fight almost any ship type with equal or superior footing. They can even go toe-to-toe with first rates, since they are barely inferior to those behemoths. Second rates can, however, be quite easily out-manoeuvred by fourth and fifth rates.
Relatively inexpensive compared to the first rate, the second rate is a suitable replacement if costs are a consideration. Its firepower, manpower, and durability are more than suitable to the task when lacking a first rate.

The xebec is a lateen-rigged sailing ship with exceptional speed, making it popular with North African corsairs for hunting wealthy infidel merchants!

Overview
These relatively small vessels have three masts carrying fore-and-aft lateen sails, making them handy sailors and speedy, even in light winds. The lateen sails also allow the ship to sail close-hauled to the wind, making pursuits easier. Even when becalmed, some xebecs can still be dangerous enemies to face, as they carry oars and can close with an enemy at a time of their own choosing.

Although not quite as well armed as a European frigate, xebecs carry a formidable arsenal of 12- or 18-pounder guns. This, combined with their excellent sailing characteristics, makes them particularly suitable for piracy, and the corsairs – the infamous Barbary Pirates – of the North African coast use them. They can also carry a good-sized crew of ruffians!

Historically, the Barbary Pirates were a severe threat to European traders for centuries, partly because of excellent warships like the xebec (the name probably comes from an Arabic word “shabbak”, meaning a small warship). Eventually a few xebec-frigates were used by European Mediterranean naval powers, where the basic xebec hull shape was preserved but the distinctive lateen sails were replaced by square rigged sails. A few xebecs carried a hybrid rig with both square and lateen sails.

Details
Xebecs are most commonly seen in the hands of pirates. Xebecs are fast and relatively well armed, making them excellent for taking down lighter trading ships and smaller frigates. However, Xebecs' sails are easily torn to pieces by chainshot from heavier ships, and are easily sinkable, meaning that they will become outdated in the later stages of the game.
The hand mortar can be used to place a grenade on a target beyond normal throwing range.

Overview
Despite its name, the hand mortar is more of a grenade launcher, with a wide barrel, typically of bronze, mounted on a musket stock so that it can be fired from the shoulder. This method of delivery offers increased range, but the weapons are temperamental and prone to misfires or bursting. This, coupled with the variable quality of the grenades fired, means that in the wrong hands a hand mortar can often be as much of a danger to the man firing it as to the enemy. Despite this, the grenade is a useful battlefield weapon when used against enemies deployed in cover, or for clearing choke points.

Historically the armies of the Ottoman Empire and Russia employed the hand mortar. In the Russian military, hand mortar detachments typically operated in support of the artillery, possibly because the unpredictability of the weapon made it unpopular among the line regiments! The Ottomans always treated grenades as a form of “thrown artillery”.

Details
Janissary Hand Mortar Bölük are a grenade firing unit available to the Ottoman Empire. They are similar to the Hand Mortar Company available to Russia. Like it's Russian counterpart this unit is too fragile to be used on the frontlines; they're increased accuracy and slower reload relegated to them a position behind the lines. They excel at delivering firepower where needed most, a smart commander will save these men until the enemy are wavering or engaged for maximum impact. Be conservative with your firing however, they have very small reserves of grenades and once they have been used they're largely useless.

These musket-armed troops use massed volleys to break an enemy, relying on discipline to withstand any counter fire.

Overview
“Marching regiments” or “line battalions” make up the majority of units in European-style armies. They are so called because they form the line of battle, not because they always deploy in lines. Indeed, over time the capabilities of line infantry should improve as new tactics, drill and weaponry are developed.

These soldiers carry muzzle-loading, smooth-bore muskets firing lead balls as wide as a man’s thumb. These are inaccurate weapons, effective only over 200 paces or so and when fired in massed volleys. The ability to fire and reload with machine-like regularity with shot and bullet flying and comrades falling all around is what wins battles.

Historically, in many armies colonels received a fee to raise regiments, which remained their personal property and commands. They jealously guarded their rights to appoint friends, relatives and hangers-on as regimental officers. This contractor system, however, allowed unscrupulous officers to make handsome profits by pocketing the pay of non-existent soldiers. The better colonels did take a pride in their regiments, spending their own fortunes on good uniforms and weapons. The capabilities of a “standard” line infantry unit therefore varied between nations and over time. It wasn’t until the 1760s that anything approaching uniformity of drill, equipment and regulations became the norm.

Line infantry regiments remained unchanged throughout the period, and their organizational pattern still forms the basis of modern military units.

Details
Line infantry form the heart of any army in Empire: Total War. In a head-on fight, a line infantry will be able to beat almost any non-line infantry regiment (with the exception of a well-angled and timed salvo of canister shot fired from an artillery piece). Line infantry hold the advantages of superior numbers (and therefore superior firepower when Fire by Rank is researched), morale and defensive capabilities.

Line infantry have several technology upgrades available to them. Plug Bayonets increase their melee capabilities, but require the infantry to equip them manually and force them to remain in melee mode until after the battle; Ring Bayonets are permanently and automatically attached, and still allow the infantry to fire, but reduce their firing rate; Socket Bayonets neither sacrifice shooting abilities nor speed while providing the line infantry with good melee capabilities. Bayonet technologies aside, line infantry benefit enormously from the Fire By Rank, which enables all ranks of the infantry to fire one by one as opposed to just the first rank. Fire and Advance gives line infantry the ability to close in on enemies while simultaneously delivering fire to against them. Finally, Square Formation allows line infantry to form a square, reducing their firepower and mobility but giving them a powerful defensive bonus against cavalry.

Every nation in the game has slightly different line infantry. The British, for example, have some of the finest line infantry in the game, while Prussia's line infantry are almost as good and very inexpensive to field. On the other hand of the spectrum, Russia and Austria have notoriously poor line infantry in terms of discipline. The Ottoman equivalents of line infantry are the Isarelys and the Nizam-I Cedit infantry, while the Maratha Confederacy have Bargir Infantry and Sikh Musketeers.

Line infantry are at their best when their flanks are guarded with yet more line infantry. Large numbers of regiments lined up and facing parallel to the enemy is usually the focal point of the battle, with both sides shooting at each other until one side breaks and runs. In cases like this, the center of the line is especially important: if it breaks, then morale is reduced for the units surrounding it. Therefore, the center should be comprised of the better line infantry regiments. On the other hand, the enemy center should be considered the primary target for artillery, grenades, etc.

The flanks are important, too. They are susceptible to cavalry charges. To prevent this, attach cavalry, stakes, or square formation to the sides of the line of battle.

Before Fire by Rank is researched, only the first rank of line infantry fire their muskets. Stretching out their lines as thin as can be sensibly done so will maximize their firing volume before this technology is researched. This tactic also has the advantage of enveloping enemy positions in overlapping fields of fire. However, thinner lines are more susceptible to breaking from cavalry charges.
A sword is an honourable weapon for any warrior. The man who carries one must demonstrate his courage if he is to cut down his foe.
Overview
Although a sword, no matter what its design, may appear outdated next to a musket, it has one great advantage: it never needs loading. A truly skilled swordsman will never want for employment, and he is an intimidating sight to many regular musket-armed soldiers.

Units of swordsmen are also easier to handle tactically on a battlefield. A general does not have to make fine judgements about when to hold or give fire: he need only send his men forward to do their killing work at the right time. Once committed, they will keep fighting until death or victory comes.
Details
Hindu Warriors fight in the style of their ancestors using a sword and shield, in practice they are largely useless and a player should never recruit them if it all possible. Outdated at the start of the game they only get worse as the game goes on, as soon as Line Infantry start getting Fire By Rank these units should all be disbanded to save upkeep costs. In regards to their stats they are not too impressive, they are barely an improvement over their musket wielding counterparts although they are cheaper to recruit and maintain.
These locally recruited cavalry are a valuable aid in keeping order.
Overview
These light horsemen are often little more than mounted militia, but with a greater social standing. Cavalry always see themselves as better than foot soldiers, but in this case, it may be true. It is, after all, not cheap to purchase and maintain a decent horse, and this means that men with financial standing make up the majority of recruits.

They are, however, not as disciplined as regular cavalry, simply because they do not have the time or available resources to learn the craft of war as thoroughly. They are, however, extremely useful in policing the rougher, lower orders and keeping the existing social structure intact.

Historically, there are many examples of yeomanry or gendarmes turning on their own citizenry with surprising and horrific violence. They were widely used against the anti-factory Luddites in northern England and, most infamously, were responsible for the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, when the Manchester and Salford Yeomanry charged a mostly peaceful, but excited crowd, and cut down many unarmed protesters.

Details
Useful early on as substitutes for the better suited light and heavy cavalry to come, provincial cavalry retain their usefulness in the late game for keeping the order in turbulent regions as they receive a bonus to repression. Should a rebellion occur, they are a good complement to militia forces in fighting, routing, and destroying rebel mobs.

However, provincial cavalry have a very weak charge bonus and not much melee skill or defense. They are only really suited to attacking weaker enemies, or enemies that are just about to break. Provincial cavalry tend to flee easily and, like all cavalry are susceptible to obliteration by concentrated fire very quickly.
Overview
For all its smoke and noise, handling the smoothbore, muzzle-loading musket can be taught to all but the most stupid of men. Once the basic skills of loading have been mastered, it is simply a matter of pointing the loud end at the enemy and pulling the trigger. It is in God's hands as to what happens next!

Even the most inexperienced or cack-handed of peasants can be useful with a musket in his hands. The noise of a volley is often enough to frighten, and any casualties in the enemy ranks are a bonus.

Historically, such units of irregular musket men would arrive at a battlefield with all kinds of weapons, from ancient matchlocks handed down from father to son, to modern government-issue weapons looted from the enemy dead. This lack of standardisation did not matter much, as it was the ability to fire at all that made the unit a useful force.
Details
The Fellahin Musketeers are a unit available to the North African muslim nations. They are a cheap and plentiful militia that can be used effectively early on without worrying whether they survive. Best used in conjunction with a higher morale unit to ensure they don't break, they can do an adequate job. You will quickly find that they become outclassed once Fire By Rank is researched. Once that happens these units can be assigned to garrison duty.
These musket-armed troops use massed volleys to break an enemy, relying on discipline to withstand any counter fire.

Description
“Marching regiments” or “line battalions” make up the majority of units in European-style armies. They are so called because they form the line of battle, not because they always deploy in lines. Indeed, over time the capabilities of line infantry should improve as new tactics, drill and weaponry are developed.

These soldiers carry muzzle-loading, smoothbore muskets firing lead balls as wide as a man’s thumb.

It wasn't until the 1760s that anything approaching uniformity of drill, equipment and regulations became the norm.

Line infantry regiments remained unchanged throughout the period, and their organisational pattern still forms the basis of modern military units.

Details
This line unit is an upgrade version of the regular Line Infantry. They are better trained than their counterparts and perform much better in battle as a result of this. Unfortunately they have a unit limit and a very small are to recruit from. Because of this these units should be used sparingly and where they're most needed. They can hold flanks together nearly as well as guards.
