These well trained spearmen are the mainstay of many Egyptian armies, thanks to their all-round defensive abilities.

Overview
These well trained spearmen are the mainstay of many Egyptian armies, thanks to their all-round defensive abilities. They wear light padded armour - hardly surprising given the incredibly hot climate of home - and carry large shields. They do not carry secondary weapons at all, and rely entirely on their spears in combat. This means that they are best employed to hold a defensive position against cavalry, or as a rough phalanx to take on other infantry by 'push of pike' and weight of numbers.

These men are better trained than some other Egyptian forces, such as Nubian spearmen, and will hold more often as a result.

Details
Nile Spearmen are a hoplite unit good for forming the front line in Egypts armies and their decent defensive strengths allows them to hold their own against most other units with little support. Lighter troops in particular will really struggle to get through their spears, and will take mass casualties. However Nile Spearmen will start to struggle as other factions start to recruit stronger units. The Nile Spearmen are a upgrade versus Nubian Spearmen and have their uses into the late campaign. They are even superior to the elite Pharoahs Guard in some ways, because they are better at tanking missiles, especially pila, have a much more reasonable upkeep, and are more disposable.

They will struggle against some of their contemporaries but overall can be considered a strong frontline unit that can hold their own and provide Egypt with a decent hoplite unit.
The Sacred Band fight as heavy cavalry, armed with spears and swords and well armoured to boot. They are an elite in Carthaginian warfare and society.

Overview
Sacred Band cavalry are an elite in Carthaginian warfare and society. They fight as heavy cavalry, but with a level of discipline and élan that is rarely matched in other nations. They carry spears and wear good armour, so that they can charge home with devastating effect. They are the devoted servants of Astarte, handed over to the temple and state by their patrician families for military duties rather than ritual sacrifice. Historically, the great Carthaginian general Hannibal took units of the Sacred Band over the Alps and into Italy; even though they got no reinforcements from home two-thirds of these men were still fighting after 14 years of campaigning.

Details
Sacred Band are elite Carthaginian cavalry and by far the strongest they have and one of the strongest in RTW. The pack a huge attack very heavy amour and both spear and a sword. The sword has slightly higher attack than the spear so use alt+right click to have them use their swords in melee once their charge is completed. Sacred Band Cavalry are very strong on the charge because of their high attack and mass from their armour. They can handle charging any enemy except heavy Spearmen and their melee skill is so high that they can be left in melee. They lack shields however so they can die a little more easily than you might expect and arrows can hurt them, despite their amour. Still, Sacred Band Cavalry are incredibly strong and worth using in great numbers. Their strength lies in their incredible charge capacity, and they are also pretty tough, though not invincible.

Because of it's enormous farming potential Sacred Band Cavalry can be made available quite early in the city of Carthage, but their very high building requirements mean they won't be available in many other cities until late in the game.

Their upkeep is enormous, high even when compared to other elite cavalry, at 340. The other top tier horse cavalry units have 240 upkeep, so perhaps this is a typo.
Libyan spearmen are best when defending against cavalry, but can hold a battle line for a while when required.

Overview
Libyan spearmen are best when defending against cavalry, but can hold a battle line for a while when required. They are recruited from among the lower orders of Carthaginian society, and given basic training in how to handle their spears and war gear. They are better equipped than, say, militia, as they have light leather armor as well as shields and helmets. Their training also makes them effective in battle, as they are unlikely to cut and run in the same way as a militia unit.

Details
Libyan Spearmen are good Carthaginian counter-cavalry units and decent anvil battle-line troops. When they fight against cavalry, Libyan Spearmen receive an attack bonus of 8, bringing the total to 13. There is no bonus against infantry, giving these units a relatively low attack and therefore less able to beat infantry. However, because of their decent defense they can hold out against most infantry for awhile, and while they might not kill many of them they buy time for other troops to come in to assist. This fact makes them a much better battleline than Iberian Infantry, but they will never match a unit like the Greek Hoplites, and will be ground down by Swordsmen if the assistance never comes. Their morale is also still a little dubious at 4.

Libyan Spearmen are inexpensive considering their accessibility to Carthage. There is only a 160 denarii recruitment cost difference between Iberian Infantry and Libyan Spearmen. These units are also less expensive than units such as Hastati, Warbands, or Hoplites that can be recruited much sooner in the game.

Fierce warriors adept at close quarters against other infantry, Bastarnae may attack without orders.

Overview
The Bastarnae are a particularly ferocious tribe from the northern Balkans who rejoice in man-to-man combat. Some scribes would have it that there are no fiercer men in battle, and they are a formidable resource for any Thracian commander: they are highly unlikely to break and run. Even their weapon of choice - the rhomphaia - is a cruel looking, curved blade sharpened on the inner edge, like a sickle. With one blow, this weapon is capable of severing an arm or leg.

Each Bastarnae warrior also carries a small shield, which other than his helmet is his only protection, not that this lack of armour worries these fearless fighters for a moment!

Often tattooed and with blue-dyed hair, the only concern with such battle-hungry fighters is that they are liable to fling themselves into the fray at the earliest opportunity.

Details
Bastarnae are a barbaric unit only available to Thrace. Their strong attack makes them quite dangerous to units with low defence. They will struggle against the elite units of other factions such as Royal Pikemen due to their low defence, The Bastarnae are not for holding the frontlines, they are far more suited as ambushers or a flanker. While they will likely destroy weaker infantry or cavalry by the time they will be available to Thrace most factions would likely have armies with stronger units. A unusual aspect of the Bastarnae is that they have two hit points unfortunately there low defence negates any advantage a second hit point will bring.

The Bastarnae are not without their uses however, a good method to use them is to have attack a unit in the flanks or a unit already engaged with another, this allows their strong attack to make short work of most units. They can also be useful in watching the flanks of a Thracian pikeline. Overall the Bastarnae are to be considered a glass cannon, their attack can be devastating to infantry or cavalry when used right but if caught off guard or stuck in a battle of attrition their low defense will be their Achillies heel.

Dacia is one of the factions in Rome: Total War designed to be non-playable. However they can be made playable by simple modifications to the game files (more information on which can be found here).
Gameplay
Starting Position
Dacia begins in the Balkans, north of Macedonia, west of the Thracians and south of the Scythians. To the west of Dacia are the rebel territories of Aquinicum, Lovosice and Segestica.

Their cities are:

*Porrolissum: Dacian Capital; Region - Dacia

*Campus Iazyges: Dacian Town; Region - Tribus Iazyges

Victory Conditions
*Long Campaign: Hold 50 provinces including Rome.
*Short Campaign: Hold 15 provinces and outlast or destroy Thrace and Macedon

Units
Dacia is a well rounded faction with a strong early game focus. They get strong early units such as Falxmen, Archer Warband and Barbarian cavalry. They have competent Sword Infantry, decent cavalry and multiple archers options, some of which can fight in melee if required. In the late game their troops will have trouble against elite armies of more civilized powers. Their roster is essentially a generic barbarian roster, similar to Gaul with a few trade offs.

*Infantry
**Peasants
**Warband
**Scythian Mercenaries
*Missile
**Ballistas
**Onagers

Unique Units
Falxmen These warriors have a strong attack but poor defense.
Falxmen are also very mobile, and so are suitable for ambushing or supporting heavy cavalry such as Noble Cavalry

Chosen Archer Warband These troops are skilled long ranged archers with chainmail armour, and can be used to keep enemy archers from targeting vulnerable units. They can also fight as light infantry if necessary.

The Papal States is a non-playable faction in Medieval II: Total War. Historically the Papal States was one of the major Italian states, until the Unification of Italy in 1861. The head of the States is always the Pope, who leads "God's Armies" into battle, and governs the only Papal city in the game, Rome. Players can easily modify the descr_strat file to make them playable, but further modifications are needed to allow them to call Crusades properly. They are similar to the Senate of Rome Total War in that they are not meant to be played, and because gameplay may be buggy.

Gameplay
Starting Position
They start in the middle of the Italian Peninsula.

Their settlement is;

*Rome: Capital - Minor City

Victory Conditions
*Long campaign: Hold 100 regions.
*Short campaign: Hold 80 regions.

Campaign Play
The Papal States is different from all the other factions. For starters, they have no family tree at all. Their faction leader is the Pope, who cannot marry. When the Pope dies all the Cardinals elect the next Pope from among their ranks. A new Pope spawns in his capital, usually Rome, or in the countryside of Rome if the Papal States have no regions. The Papal States can still get generals through adoptions and Man of the Hour the same way other factions can, but these generals will never become Faction Heir or Leader.

Another interesting thing about the Papal States is that they still have a relationship with the Pope like all factions. Very often the Pope does not like the Papal States very much! For this reason, you cannot always call Crusades as you please, you need high Papal Approval just like everyone else. Without modifying the game the relationship with the Pope seems to be stuck at a low level, which means you have to wait for someone else to call a Crusade. Normal methods to increase your standing with the Pope, such as building priests and churches, converting other religions, participating in Crusades, and listening to Papal Missions do not seem to work. However, the Papal States can never be Excommunicated. Crusades will eventually be requested by other Catholic factions and the Papal States can join them.

When playing as the Papal States, you don't send missions to other Catholic rulers, and you cannot choose to Excommunicate other factions directly. However, if the Papal States and another Catholic faction go to War, the other faction is automatically Excommunicated, even if the Papal States were the aggressor! They can offer Reconciliation with Catholic factions who have been Excommunicated in Diplomacy, which gives the Papal States an excellent Diplomatic advantage, particularly in ending wars.

The Catholic AI is more cautious attacking the Papal States when they are an AI faction, but when the player is the Papal States the AI seems as aggressive towards them as they would be towards any other player faction. The Papal States rarely attack a non-Excommunicated Catholic faction but it can happen.

The Papal States faction also controls Inquisitors. These Agents spawn in Catholic ruled regions with heresy. They increase conversion but also increase Unrest, and can denounce anyone who is not part of the Papal States, even generals. Characters with high Piety are harder to Denounce, and Inquisitors with more Piety are more effective. If the player does not give Inquisitors orders they act on their own, looking for heretics and other blasphemous individuals to denounce. They disband once heresy is no longer an issue, or after 3 successes or failures.

The Papal States are never completely destroyed. Unlike any playable faction, the Papal States can survive losing their last region and all of their armies. They get a continuous stream of Popes from Papal Elections as long as there are any Catholic Priests on the map. The Papal States can only 'lose' if all Catholic priests are dead, no more are recruited, and they have no regions, armies, and agents. Even at that point the Papal States still exist technically but are effectively destroyed; they have no power or influence and no ability to rise up again.

Other than these differences, the Papal States function exactly the same as any other Catholic faction.

Enabling Crusades
To enable the Papal States to call Crusades, add this script to the campaign_script file, located in
Medieval II Total War/data/world/map/campaign/imperial_campaign . The descr_strat file is also there.

monitor_event FactionTurnStart FactionIsLocal
set_faction_standing papal_states papal_states 1.0
end_monitor

This sets the Papal States relationship with themselves to perfect at the beginning of every player turn. With a Perfect Relationship with the Pope, the Papal States should be able to get any Crusade they want.

Units
The Papal States army functions mostly like a generic Italian faction. This means they have some very strong Militia units, especially in the Early Game. They also get some unique and very powerful Infantry from cities with a Stone Wall or higher; this gives them an enormous Military advantage. Like the other Italians, their late game Swordmen and Cavalry is a little lackluster, since they aren't Knights, although they are well armoured and cheap. The Papal States is similar to Milan in that it can build a strong army without Castles.
Faction overview
Strengths: Very rich empire with the possibilities of getting even richer by controlling the Black Sea and surrounds. Very strong Horse archers and infantry in all periods. Very rich starting territories with rich surrounding rebel territories aswell. Very easy to link all your cities with trade. Uniquely positioned to control all faction traffic from the West going into the East and vice versa. Easy access to the rich holy lands, meaning your empire will only become more wealthy.

Weaknesses: Very limited once other factions reach the late period. No access to gunpowder. Every faction wants a piece of your rich rich lands, meaning you are likely to be attacked considerably. Shares borders with the Turks, a faction that will want you dead. Also prone to some Italian aggression from the West as Venice and Sicily expand Eastward.

Conclusion: The Byzantines are arguably the hardest faction to play. While they will not struggle to keep up with the other factions in the early and high periods they will fall greatly behind in the late period, due to having no access to the advanced technologies being discovered at that time. Your empire is very centrally located and all the factions will want to come through your lands for various reasons, a wise Emperor will let friendly and neutral factions pass through and hold your enemies to ransom at a crossroad. The Byzantines will have to deal with the Turks, preferably very early on, for if the Turks are allowed to advance and grow the task of destroying them will become that much more difficult. The Italian factions will also need to be pacified to a certain degree as they make their way East. It would not be wise for the Emperor to fight a war on two opposing fronts of his empire, lest he surely fail. Once the Turks have been dealt with, the Emperor should be free to deal with the menacing Italians and eventually the Mongol hordes that come from the East.

Overview
The Kataphractoi trace their origins back to Roman times and are recruited from amongst the middle classes, providing the Byzantine army with a force of well trained and disciplined cavalry units. Exceptionally well protected and riding armoured horses, they are unworried by the arrows of their opponents. Although slightly old fashioned, with their lances and maces they are still formidable fighters on the battlefield.

Details
Anyone who has played Rome: Total War will remember the Kataphractoi quite well as the elite cavalry available to Parthia. In M2TW though, Kataphractoi are a unique unit available to the Byzantine Empire. They are well armoured and have high attack and charge stats. Though a tad inferior to the Latinkon, Kataphractoi do have armour piercing maces as well as an armoured horse, though it can prove a disadvantage when attempting to catch fleeing cavalry units as the armour slows down the horse as well as reduces its stamina. The Kataphractoi are superior in dealing with heavily armoured troops but should not be used to fight cavalry as per the reason above. Like all cavalry units, the Kataphractoi should keep away from spears at all cost.

Sicilian Norman knights, equipped in typical feudal knightly fashion with lances and armor, but fighting exceptionally well.

Overview
Of all the knights of Europe, the Normans are the most renowned. Their Viking heritage and lust for battle has led many to seek their fortune abroad, especially in Southern Italy. Here two adventurers, Robert and Roger Guiscard have established a formidable kingdom which employs many of their countrymen. The Norman Knight's exceptional ferocity, and heavy armour make him feared on any battlefield.

Details
Norman knights have a favorable combination of high speed, high power, and moderate building requirements and cost. They move with the speed of mailed knights while having better stamina, fight as well as chivalric knights except on the charge, and have the infrastructure requirements of feudal knights, while being much better.

They move like medium cavalry because they do not have barded horses, making them better at attacking missile cavalry who heavy knights cannot catch. Their speed also really helps them with effective flanking and with stopping troublesome missile troops. Meanwhile, they brawl in melee as well as all but the absolute heaviest cavalry.

This combination makes Norman Knights an extremely useful unit, among the best cavalry in the game and a great boon to Sicily. The fact that they are as good or better than other Knight units that require a Citadel makes them even better. The Norman Knights basically make Chivalric Knights unnecessary, and the Sicilian player should use them for the entire campaign.

Poorly trained, these units fight with a spear and sword.

Overview
Used throughout the Byzantine Empire to protect merchants, provincial towns and roads, Militia Cavalry are armoured in light mail and equipped with a spear. Though poorly trained, these men are good at chasing down archers and other light troops.

Details
Militia Cavalry are the only dedicated melee light cavalry available to the Byzantine Empire. Their stats are quite poor and will likely fall apart if they were to be stuck in combat.

The best use for Militia Cavalry is to harass missile units and chase down fleeing infantry and even then the Missile cavalry the Byzantine Empire can recruit can do a better job of both tasks. Militia Cavalry can't even be considered cavalry you can recruit in a pinch due to requiring a merchants guild in a city.

Overall Militia Cavalry will likely be a unit you are unlikely to use due to the guild requirement and the fact that they just dont offer much on the battlefield that your other cavalry can't provide.
These horse archers use speed to sweep in, attack, and then ride out of range.

Overview
The Mescalero Apache are a mountain people and, unusually for such a folk, highly skilled riders. Masters of irregular warfare, they have an intimate knowledge of the landscape, and concealment skills that give them an edge over enemies. The Mescalero Apache take full advantage of the environment, and recognise the importance of subterfuge and diversions when fighting a larger enemy force.

They even create fake camps, climb sheer rock faces to leave no trail, and live off the land, all to confound enemy trackers. Their horses are not only for hunting and battle, but are also eaten when food is scarce.

The Mescalero Apache lived among the mountains of New Mexico and Texas. The heart of their homeland was the peak of the Sierra Blanca. Their name originates from their use of the century mescal plant, a reliable source of food that can be found in the deserts of New Mexico. The tribe harvested the plant’s heart and cooked it by steaming. Today the plant is used in a very different form: it is distilled to create mescal, a spirit closely related to tequila.

Details
Apache Mescalero Warriors are a unique unit available only to the Pueblo nations in the Warpath Campaign. They are a missile Cavalry unit, fielding bows and tomahawks. Due to this they can output an impressive fire rate to to the quick reload speed bows have. This means that they can unleash a few volleys upon the enemy before they have a chance to reform and open fire. By this time the Apache Mescalero Warriors can ride away to a safe distance. They can also handle themselves well in melee and if supported by other units, will likely defeat enemy line in combat. However they should not be used on a frontal attack on an enemy Line Infantry, as a volley could be devastating.

Overview
The Huron are friendly with the French and are likely to attack British colonies in North America in the first few turns. Their territory south of Rupert's land is easy to access, but it is difficult and rather impractical to eradicate the Huron early as they have a territory in the north-west corner of the Americas, poor in resources and surrounded by unusable wilderness. The French might find good allies with the Huron in their contest with Britain over the Americas, as the Huron can, like other minor nations, field a very large army that may prove insurmountable by early armies.
Overview
Berserkers are extremely ferocious, aggressive, indomitable warriors with no thought for personal safety once the rage of battle comes upon them. They will use chants, strong drink, potions, rituals and even self mutilation to whip themselves into a fighting frenzy. Once the madness is upon them, little can stop them - their blood-crazed dash into the thick of combat is deeply disheartening (at best) to any who stand against them. They may try to cut their enemies to pieces in this state, but will think nothing of trying to gouge, bite, head butt and kick opponents to death as well.

They disdain armor as a sign of weakness, along with mercy, common sense and knowing when to stop fighting. They are supremely dangerous foes in close combat.

Details
Berserkers are among the strongest infantry units in Rome: Total War. Like typical barbarian units, Berserkers have much higher attack than defense statistic. In the case of these units, this attack and morale of Berserkers are among the highest of any infantry in the game. They are also recruited from the Sacred Grove of Donar which can only be built in small cities. Having a high recruitment cost and taking two turns to recruit further limits Berserkers accessibility to Germania.

Berserkers have the distinction of being unable to be contained. It is almost impossible to control a Berserker when it prevents him from battle, as the Berserker will charge without warning. In combat, Berserkers will literally send their enemies flying. It isn’t long before they go berserk and enter a “Heroic” state where Berserkers cannot be ordered to do anything and will hack away at anyone opponent who dares come near. Due to lowering enemy infantry’s morale by virtue of having the pleasure to kill them, Berserkers can be found chasing routed and unrouted men anywhere around the map.

Despite their abilities, Berserkers face two serious weaknesses. Since missile attacks ignore the defense skill factor, Berserkers have a defense statistic of 2 against missile attacks. In comparison, Barbarian Peasants have a defense statistic of 3 against missile attacks, which illustrates how much of a drawback the susceptibility of missile fire is to Berserkers. The second liability is that most cavalry have a higher charge bonus in comparison to infantry, and Berserkers simply do not have the defense to be able to successfully cope with fighting against oncoming cavalry.
Overview
Double-handed axes are intimidating weapons, especially in the hands of chosen axemen. These men can hack a hole in almost any enemy battle line. Chosen axemen are an elite among tribal warriors, selected for their physical size, strength, bravery and - some would say - pig-headedness. They are the assault troops of any barbarian army, the men whose only job is to smash any organized resistance and keep on killing until no foes remain. Fear is completely alien to them, as is any concept of mercy to a foe or a weakling among their own kind. They are fantastically strong men - and need to be to wield their enormous two-handed axes with any degree of skill and control.

The axes are easily capable of cleaving a man down to his breastbone even through armor. Chosen axemen themselves disdain armor as a sign of cowardice.

Details
These are the elite German infantry unit. The most notable features of Chosen Axemen are their high attack and morale as well as low defense. With such high attack, Chosen Axemen are extremely effective against unarmored enemies. These units can still destroy armored infantry as well, since Chosen Axemen has the armor piercing attribute, which means that a Chosen Axemen’s attack “ignores” half of the recipients’ armor. As flankers Chosen Axemen are the best infantry in the game by far, except for perhaps the uncontrollable Berserkers. Since Chosen Axemen also have a rather low defense they tend to take heavy casualties in prolonged encounters, just like their enemies. This low defense can be contrasted to some of the other barbarian factions’ Chosen Swordsmen. Chosen Axemen make up for this lack of defense in part with a high-end morale statistic.

Despite general success against infantry, Chosen Axemen are still susceptible to cavalry charges, especially from heavy cavalry, and missile fire. They have no defense at all against missiles. They should also never attack pikes from the front, not even Levy Pikemen, for they won't get to use their high attack before getting stabbed to death by the Pike Wall.
Overview
The men of a spear warband are effective against cavalry and most infantry, but lack the discipline of more 'civilized' troops. Their spears, however, make them valuable defensive warriors for any warlord. The warband is the basic unit of any barbarian army - a group of tough warriors bound together in the service of a tribal strongman or village headman. Each warrior is protected by a large shield. In common with other Germanic warriors, these men are very clever when concealing themselves in forests.

Details
Germanic Spear Warbands are unique as they are the only barbarian troops in RTW that are able to use the phalanx formation. This gives them a huge advantage over any other barbarian faction, especially in the early game.

Spear Warbands are deadly against most other early troops. They can kill many enemies with their pikes before enemies even get close and they are capable fighters with their swords as well. They are the best tier 1 infantry by far.

Like all phalanxes, Spear Warbands are best used when they are stationary. The unit braces against enemies best when still. If you need to move them, make sure it is in a straight a line as possible.

Phalanx troops will raise their pikes when turning and this means that enemies who attack at that moment can charge in under the pikes and engage the men directly. Never turn corners with enemies close by. Spear Warbands have good morale and solid stats and while they are impetuous, this rarely matters as phalanx troops can't run anyway and it boosts their morale up to sky high levels. With a few Screeching Women and a wall of Spear Warbands Germania can be more than tough to break. Just watch out for missiles as their armor is light and they will take damage.

Like all phalanx, Spear Warbands are best used when they are stationary.

They are the most defensive infantry of the Germans. They can be the men who take the brunt of the attack while the rest of your units position to attack at the right moment and place.
Warbands are bound to the service of a strongman or petty village head. They fight well as personal glory is the way to status, but are often difficult to control.

Overview
Warbands are bound to the service of a strongman or petty village head. They are the basic 'unit' to be found in many barbarian armies. They fight well as glory and loot are the road to status but are often difficult to control. They care little for discipline and less for restraint, but they can be relied on to fight, and fight hard. In warfare it is up to each man to prove his own bravery and worth, so the savage charge into the enemy is about as sophisticated as they ever want to be!

Each man carries a stabbing spear and a large shield.

Details
These soldiers are first units the Britons, Dacians, and Gauls recruit after peasants. Warbands have the distinct advantage in combat of being able to easily defeat the Romans’ first unit they recruit after peasants: the Town Watch. The Warband’s drawback to this is its cost. The Roman Hastati that come after the Town Watch have a recruitment cost of 440 denarii and require a 170 denarii per turn upkeep, when the Warbands has a 420 denarii recruitment cost and 200 denarii per turn upkeep. This makes Warbands in the long run more expensive in comparison to the infantry recruited at muster fields or barracks.

The distinctive feature of the Warband is their warcry and being the basic barbarian counter-cavalry soldiers. The warcry is an option some barbarian units have. Choosing this option makes the unit stop fighting (if they were in the first place) and begin shouting and hitting their shields with their weapons, creating a demoralizing effect on nearby enemy units and a positive effect on friendly soldiers. As a result of this and poorer statistics than later units in the game a common tactic is the barbarian army outnumbers their enemy so that the “extra” soldiers that determined the enemy was outnumbered could swamp their opponents, flank them, or demoralize them with a warcry.

Warbands will disband when bribed even by other factions with Warbands, because each factions Warband is technically a different unit with identical stats.
Parthia is a completely cavalry focused faction. A Parthian field army should either be entirely cavalry or include Infantry only as bait or fodder. They have very strong horse archers, including Persian Cavalry, a long range Horse Archer that can also fight in melee. They also have the unmatched Cataphract heavy cavalry as well as War Elephants and Cataphract Camels, who all have a brutal charge and should crush any opposing cavalry force. Their foot archers are average, making them often unnecessary, and their Melee infantry is terrible; the worst in Rome Total War by a longshot.
Unique Units
Persian Cavalry: Can be recruited from Cavalry Stables.
Persian cavalry are very useful, namely if they use cantribian circle. Cantabrian circle allows them to move while shooting, making them more effective versus foot archers as they take less hits.

Persian cavalry themselves have long range bows making them more dangerous than normal horse archers ,even if Persian cavalry lack mobility. They are far better protected than normal horse archers and have swords for melee.

War Elephants: Can be recruited from Elite Cavalry Stables.
These troops provide your army with shockpower you can place these elefants behind eastern infantry(if facing romans the enemy roman player thinks eastern infantry? against my Urbans easy kills he charges his urbans in maybe he has only cohorts and cav no archers or onagers)

Now what you do now is send your elephants right through your own eastern infantry and into the Urban Cohort.

At the same time you smash the enemy cav with your own cav by attacking from all sides remember this:Battles are about Routing units you dont have to kill them 1 by 1 Kill them all once they are all runinng so that you dont lose troops durning the slow process of annahilating enemy army.

Cataphract Camels: Can be recruited from Royal Cavalry Stables.
These units are simply cataphracts who have exchanged their horse mounts for camels. Camels scare horses, making them extremely effective in attacking and destroying enemy cavalry units, particularly slower heavy cavalry, as Cataphract camels still have the Armor-piercing mace attack, the alternate attack for Cataphracts. However, as camels are slower than horses and the extensive amount of armor on this unit makes it tire quite easily, most cavalry will be able to easily outmanuever this unit.

Eastern infantry:These infantry units can be recruited very early in the game and are extremely cheap, with 240 men on Huge unit size, making Eastern Infantry quite good infantry-of-the-line units early on in the game; however, they are very weak when compared to other factions' early-game infantry, and so should generally be used as a cheap cannon-fodder unit once cataphracts become available.

Archers: Mobile and has a decent punch; unarmoured, this unit is not the best but it is good enough as a missile unit if the enemy archers are eliminated early on in battle. These are the only long-range foot missiles that Parthia can recruit, and so unless horsearchers are used, Parthia is easily outclassed in missile duels between factions with better archers.

Onagers:This unit counters testudo very effectivly in campaign; flaming missiles are ideal aganst packed enemy units and very useful in forcing the enemy into all out attacks or making him or her thin out his or her line. However, by all accounts, artillery is very expensive and almost comletely useless in multiplayer, so it is advised to not get too used to using these units.

Cataphract:Cataphracts are the decisive arm in Parthia's arsenal; it is this one unit, coupled with horsearchers that makes Parthia so deadly in multiplayer as a skirmish army. Cataphracts are the most powerful heavy cavalry units in the game. To make full use of these units, use their unique alternate attack; an armor-piercing mace attack
, used by pressing and holdind down the Alt key on your keyboard and right-clicking the enemy unit that you wish to use this attack on.

Cataphracts have so much armor that a shield is not needed to ward off missiles, and since they have a charge value of 9, they should be the main attack arm of your multiplayer and campaign armies.
Note that cataphracts are more mobile than camels but do not scare horses.
‎Horse archers are a speciality of the East: swift horses and expert marksmen make a deadly combination.

Overview
Horse archers are a speciality of the East: swift horses and expert marksmen make a deadly combination. They are armed with a powerful bow and a dagger for defence, but they are not armoured and should not be expected to fight other than to escape. Horse archers rely on the maxim that 'speed is armour' to keep them out of trouble. Infantry have no hope of catching them, but other cavalry may be able to chase them down. Wise eastern commanders know this, and deploy horse archers with other cavalry to act as a deterrent to over-ambitious pursuit by an enemy.

If horse archers have a weakness it is that of all soldiers armed with composite bows: these weapons do not take well to damp or wet weather, as the glues used to construct them become weakened. While this is seldom a problem in their home provinces, it can be in wetter climes.

Details
Horse Archers are the basic missile cavalry unit available to most eastern factions. The primary purpose of Horse Archers is to harass the enemy with arrows and avoid getting into as melee and these Horse Archers can perform that job admirably. The speed of these men means that they can get away from danger and then come back to start harassing the enemy again. The two main weaknesses of this unit is range and defence, these Horse Archers have a short range on their bows and therefore have to get closer to the enemy to fire, this means that a swift cavalry unit can likely catch them in a melee and this leads to their defence issue.

Horse archers have very low defences and no armor, this means that they can suffer nasty casualities from returing fire from the enemy but more importaly this means that Horse archers will disintegrate in melee combat going up against phalanxes will mean suicide for Horse Archers, this is not aided by a weak melee attack meaning they will unlikely to cause any damadge. The best soloution is to use the speed of the Horse Archers to avoid any situations like that.

Overall the Horse Archers a good early game skirmishing unit that can use its speed to harass the enemy and get out of danger, their lack of defence however will mean they should always avoid melee combat when possible.
