The Celts are one of the non-playable factions in the Barbarian Invasion expansion for Rome: Total War. They can be made playable through very simple modding. They are in the Barbarian culture group.
Game Play
Starting Position
*Dal Raida (Caledonia)
*Tara (Hibernia)

Win Conditions
The Celts need to invade all of Britain and parts of Gaul.

Units
Infantry Units
*Barbarian Peasants
*Druids
*Pictish Spearmen
*Gallowglasses
*Hounds of Culann

Ranged Units
*Kerns
*Slingers
*Pictish Crossbowmen

Cavalry Units
*Wolfhounds
*Scotti Chariots
*Noble Clansmen
*Warlord

Unique Units
Hounds of Cullann: These fearsome warriors tower above the average soldier, with a skin hue of deep purple and carry a menacing sword. Once they use the 'Warcry' ability or enter combat they go into Berserker mode which makes you lose control of them (like in a rout) while they run around the battlefield slaughtering any enemies which fall into view.

Kerns - Javelin men.

Slingers: Just like in the original R:TW slingers are a missile unit. However they have a very short firing range and because they fire directly instead of upwards they must be placed at the front of your army or else they will fire at your own troops.

Druids: Again, like in the original R:TW Druids are infantry units, however weak they may be. Their strength however, comes in their 'Chant' ability which raises the morale of nearby allies while lowering it for enemies. Quite similar to the Catholic Priest.

Gallowglasses: A soldier with a large two-handed sword. Very powerful infantry unit.

Scotti Chariots: Chariots are quite weak in a 'head-on' charge, or even against a battle against a unit of infantry due to their low defence. Their strength however comes in charging into the rear of enemy units. Their other advantage is in the fact that they demolish enemy morale, even by just being near enemy troops. A charge into an enemy's rear or flanks usually causes an insta-rout!

Strategy guides
AAR's
History
The Celts have a long and proud history, but often debated. Some say they come from the pyrenees, whereas some say the Alps. Either way, they streamed down from the hills and conquered a huge swathe of land. (the celtic factions in RTW are Britannia, Gaul, Spain, and Dacia.) They even reached Galatia in Turkey.

The Celtic Empire was shrunk often in the later part of the 1st milennium bc. Dacia, Celtiberia, Gaul and Britannia fell to the Romans. Only Scotland, Cornwall, Cumbria, Ireland, the Isle of Man and Wales has still a strong Celtic population.

Celtic culture itself lingered on until the 5th century ad.
The Eastern Roman Empire is one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War's expansion Barbarian Invasion.

Historical Overview
In 330 AD, the capital of the Roman Empire was moved to the ancient city of Byzantium, situated between the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara. Constantine renamed it Nova Roma, and after he died in 337 AD it was named Constantinople in his honour.Constantine also converted the Romans to Christianity.

For decades the Roman Empire had struggled to maintain control over its vast territories. Splitting the Empire into West and East was a logical solution, however the West was, in general, more vulnerable and less wealthy than the East.

The "founding" of the Eastern Roman Empire has been placed at several key points. Some historians claim it was formed at the founding of Constantinople in 199, others the ascension of Theodosius as Eastern Augustus in 395.

The Eastern Roman Empire survived the fall of Rome in 476.However,centuries later,Justinian I became emperor. He gained lost provinces of the Western Roman Empire and it was under his rule that Eastern Romam Empire ,( or the Byzantine Empire as it is known as today ) managed to conquer Carthage,North Africa,Italy and southern Spain. However, the Arabs soon attacke dthem a few years after Justinian's death. The Arabs conquered Egypt,Carthage,Spain,Sicily, the Middle East and Turkey from the Eastern Roman Empire. After this, the Eastern Roman Empire began a steady decline. It is playable as the Byzantine Empire in M2TW.

Game Play
The Eastern Roman Empire lies between Europe and Asia and connects Orient and Occident. Due to its location, it has developed a unique culture and military. It combines the power of eastern cataphracts and horse archers with the discipline of Rome's legions. While the Empire's primary enemy is the Sassanid Empire to the east, the approaching barbarian hordes may become a considerable problem as well.
Furthermore, if the people are unhappy and revolt a Roman shadow faction - namely the Eastern Empire Rebels - can emerge; they are a dangerous enemy, as they have powerful Roman troops as well.

Starting Position
The Eastern Roman Empire start the game as occupiers of much of Southeastern Europe, also holding land in Asia Minor, the Levant, and North Africa.

Win Conditions
Hold 34 provinces including Thracia (Constantinople), Aegyptus (Alexandria), Northern Italy (Rome) and Africa (Carthage).

Strategy
At the start of the game the Sassanids to the east will pose the biggest threat. However, you are rich and strong enough to take them out in 10 - 15 turns.

Once the Sassanids have been taken care of, invade North Africa. The WRE will have few troops here and it's four more provinces.

After that just head into Illyria et Dalmacia and Southern Italy.

The Huns and Vandals may pose some threat to you, but the ERE can survive without its European provinces.

Overall the ERE is a relatively easy faction to play as, provided you know what you are doing.

However, while your main threat is to the east, make sure that you are in a good position in the west. The Western Roman Empire has some excellent provinces, and although they field an excellent army, their generals are weak, which should make defeating the western empire much easier than the Sassanids. However do not be over confident when it comes to fighting the WRE; as said earlier they field a might army of good quality infantry. However their weak point is their lack of decent cavalry, which means that your excellent eastern style cavalry will totally destroy both their infantry and their cavalry. The exception to this are the generals' body guard cavalry, which are excellent despite their poor commander. The German Imperial Guards are more than a match for any Easterner cavalry, however once their general is killed the guard will quickly flee the battle.
Game Play
Starting Position
The Roxolani start out with a single settlement, Campus Roxolani (Tribus Roxolani). It is generally a fifty-fifty toss-up wether or not the Huns will come and ruin your day, leading to two possible starting scenarios:
*The Hunnic Horde comes and ruins your day, forcing you to become a horde yourself and terrorize the ancient world.
*The Hunnic Horde does not come and you are free to choose what you do.
Even if the Huns do not come, you will have to expand as your single province cannot sustain the wages of your generals and the troops needed to keep the settlement happy.

Win Conditions
The Roxalani's victory conditions are the same as the Sarmatians.
You start out very beleaugered from all sides, but if you can survive for a while, you're okay. Mostly cavalry armies are your order of the day.
Starting Position
The Sarmatians have only one province at the start of the game - Vicus Sarmatae (Sarmatia). Because of their location, they are normally attacked by the Goths/Vandals/Huns/Roxolani early in the game.

Strategy guides
You will start the game occupying Vicus Sarmatae, a small town on the southern plains of the steppes, and 15,000 denarii. That's nice, because you're going to need it. You will have just a few turns to remain in possession of your lands before being chased out by either the Vandals or the Huns. If you build a port and get trade agreements with the Roxolani and maybe the Goths, you might have a couple of turns to enjoy the benefits. The main asset you have is a little time to recruit some permanent units like armored horse archers, Virgin foot archers or Virgin cavalry. These cost money, but will be valuable when you lose the town and turn into horde armies. You only get 4, so the recruited forces will be important to you to gain a 5th army.

You will want to demolish any arms-making capability just before the Vandals or Huns invest your town. The main thing is to leave town before that happens so as to avoid losses through seige and assault, and to stay ahead of the Vandals if you can. If you linger, the Vandals will be between you and the western campaign route to Gothland and the cities of the eastern Empire in Romania and Illyria. This puts you in the position of having to take their leavings.

One of your victory conditions is to take and hold Aquincum, which will be impossible when the Slavs come along in a few years. You may want to wait to take Aquincum until the Slavs spend their strength somewhat. Nevertheless, you must settle down sometime and develop an economy. To hold your cities, you will need infantry, stone walls and foot archers to deal with the horse archers. If you have to accept the loss of a city or two, try to make the hordes pay dearly for their conquest, so you can come back later with more men.

This campaign will not be easy in the middle and later stages, so try to be flexible and take what the opposition will allow you to have through the first part, and raise as much money by sacking cities as you can. I recommend building a war chest of at least 100,000 denarii to help you through the rough times.
Strategy guides
This is quite simple. Overrun the Isles and capture the island. From there on establish an economy and invade the Continent. Often the best plan is to take the Celts before they have control over Ireland, if not, capture Ireland first as it is generally less densely defended and also has a better economical advantage.
After the Celts are knocked out establish a large army on the mainland. If left late enough, you should be able to build British Legionaires on Ireland; send 5 or so units to the 3 cities in England/Scotland to help defend the mainland from the Saxons who will invade.

Build up an army of British legionaries, cavalry and archers and start taking over the Saxons in Denmark, as they are generally not well defended there as there armies are taking over the continent. This is your key to the continent...
History
Romano-British is a term to describe the people who inhabited modern day England and Wales, who were under Roman rule. They were conquered by the Romans under Emperor Claudius, when in 43 AD he invaded the region, local resistance died out sometime around 50 AD. Due to the general decline of the Roman Empire, in 410 AD the Romans were forced to abandon the province. Quickly authority devolved into Chaos, previous to this the only real administrators of the province was in the fact the now absent military. Various petty kingdoms popped up and began to fight amongst each other, and the Picts began to invade as well. With this various Romano-British leaders decided to call on foreign forces to help them, such as the Angles and Juts, who were to settle. Eventually these mercenariness were to turn on their employers and conquer them. For a time the Romano-British were confined to areas around Wales, but these to were eventually snuffed out.

Strategy guides
The Vandals start the game with at least five horde armies, each of which have 5 to 7 units of horse archers. These units are your keys to victory. The spear and chosen warrior units are OK, but are most effective when held back until after the archers have cut down most of the enemy's cavalry. Even then, they should not be thrown into melee with the enemy infantry when they are set and waiting for your charge. With their higher unit values on defense, you will lose a lot of men you don't really have to waste. Use your archers and other cavalry units to flank the infantry once you have killed off their supporting cavalry. Their morale will plummet and your infantry charge will be more effective and less expensive in men lost.

When assaulting cities, you may feel pressured to attack as soon as your siege engines are ready, but the more turns you wait, the more losses the defenders suffer from hunger and fatigue. It is never good for you to assault a city with more than one army at a time. When a second army attacks the city under AI control, its units will usually circumnavigate so close to the city wall that it will suffer significant losses due to fire from the city towers. Losses are especially severe when there is a stone wall with towers. If the garrison is small and weak, the quick attack will not be too costly; if the garrison is strong, the best tactic may be to wait them out until they sally forth. Your forces then have the benefit of using their extra defensive values and you can let the enemy tire themselves out on your battle line. Once the garrison has spent itself charging your lines and have fled back inside, you can send a siege tower against the wall and seize the gate. This will avoid the losses you suffer by charging through a hostile gate when your forces get a bath of hot oil. You can avoid losing a general that way.

While you're besieging a city, you may notice the Huns sniffing around your flank. While it would be prudent to keep another army around to face them off, they will rarely attack another horde army (especially if you have several units of horse archers intact). Instead, they will usually go off to attack someplace else. As long as you keep yourself positioned ahead of the Huns and Sarmatians, you will continue to enjoy the largest profits from sacking cities first. This will pay big dividends as you build huge cash reserves on your way through southern Europe and Italy to Spain and North Africa.

AAR's
History
The Vandals were an East Germanic tribe possibly descendants of migrants from Scandinavia. They were said to have crossed over to the mainland (modern-day Poland) from Scandinavia around 100 AD and from there migrated southeasterly to modern-day Hungary. Then they're said to have gone west, into what was then the Roman Empire. They passed through France as the Romans legions were retreating and went southwards through Spain and all the way to northwest Africa. They passed through the tip of Africa (supposedly through Algeria and Tunisia, to the Romano-African main centre, Carthage which would one day become Tunis. From Carthage, they attacked many Roman-controlled Mediterranean locations, even taking part in the Sack of Rome along with several other tribes. Comparatively, they were not as destructive and violent in wars as some other tribes people, especially in their part in the Fall of Rome, but despite this they were given their name later by Europeans who were remorseful that Rome had fallen.

In the second century AD the Vandals were supposedly split into two major tribes, the Silingi and the Hasdingi. Because the Vandals migrated into areas that were become more inhabited by other barbarians, they frequently had conflicts from all sides. Because the Romans wished for peace and feared the migrating barbarians, they were given lands and pensions to live so long as they leaved the Empire alone. During the 400s, the Vandals moved together into Roman territory, most likely because of the warlike Huns. Somewhere in this time, many of them became Arian-Christians. Early in the 400s, the Vandals began moving west into Frankish territory, where they met heavy resistance and sustained heavy losses (reportedly somewhere around 20,000). When they allied with the Alans (who originated in the eastern edge of Europe) and defeated the Franks. They passed through France, plundering as they went. As Rome was desperate and rapidly shrinking, they were given lands by the Empire. The Visigoths (West Goths) had a plan to invade, however, and they fought the Alans in Spain, winning and killing their king. The last Alans in Spain went to the Vandals for protection, and thereafter the Vandal kings called themselves "King of the Vandals and the Alans." In Spain, some Vandals settled, eventually mixing with the Visigoths as they Visigoths ended up conquering the Iberian Peninsula. The Vandals continued into Africa, mostly around Carthage (modern Tunis in Tunisia), and became seamen and pirates, benefiting handsomely from controlling much of the Mediterranean. This was also one of Rome's richest provinces, as in Africa they grew many exotic amenities as well as grains and mined gold and stones. Rome was more or less ruled by generals at the time, the most prominent being Flavius Aëtius who was seeking to rule in place of the young Emperor (who was 8) and his mother. He tried to oust his rival, General Bonifacius by telling the Emperor and the Queen Mother lies about him. Fearing he was ruined, General Bonifacius asked for help from the Vandals in Carthage. However, when the truth of the deceitful General Flavius Aëtius was exposed and Bonifacius received amnesty, the Vandals were already ready to invade Rome.

The then-King of the Vandal-Alans, King Geiseric, collected reportedly 80,000 men and crossed into Spain, to Roman territory. From the sea during raids and campaigns, Sicily, Corsica, the Balearic Islands, and Sardinia were conquered. After the ferocious Emperor of the Huns, Attila, died, the Romans were finally able to focus on other invaders. Because Africa was such a profitable area, they looked to the Vandals. Seeing that the Vandals were too strong to be destroyed outwardly and the Emperor too weak, diplomacy was used. The reigning Emperor's daughter's hand was offered to the son of Geiseric. Seeking power for himself, a Roman aristocrat Flavius Petronius Maximus probably had the Emperor killed. He then was "chosen" to be rule. Maximus had little intention with treating with the Vandals. The Vandals came to Rome and sacked it ceaselessly, although they apparently did not do some of the worse acts attributed to capturing a city, because of the Pope Leo I's pleas. The Vandals left with a substantial amount of loot and the royal family (all of them women). As for Petronius Maximus- as news of the incoming Vandals came to the city, many people fled, him being one of them. Outside of the city he was torn apart by an angry mob because he had been terribly unpopular in his 71-day rule.

Following this, the Vandals encountered the navy of the Eastern Roman Empire (which had survived the barbarians and would for a time). He tried to invade the Peloponnese Peninsula but failed with large losses for the Vandals. In revenge, Geiseric had 500 or so hostages cut to pieces and thrown overboard as the navy sailed back to Carthage. In 476, the Vandals and the Eastern Romans obtained a peace and remained on good terms with each other (although they never truly allied). Geiseric died in 477 at the ancient age of 88.

The end of Vandals came quite quickly. They had a problem dealing with their new "empire" as they ruled Catholics who thought Arians, though Christian, were heretics. Fights inside the royal family led to the Vandal's weakness, as well as defeats by the Moors. While the Vandal navy was fighting rebels in Sardinia, the Eastern Roman Empire took a chance. Justinian the I sent the great general Belisarius with an army to Vandal territory in Tunisia. In 533, the Vandals and the Eastern Romans fought close to Carthage. The Vandals fought bravely until the King's brother and nephew were killed. The Vandal King, Gelimer, feared the worst and fled the battlefield. The Eastern Romans were then able to quickly take the undefended capital city. Later, the Vandals and Eastern Romans battled again, not far from Carthage on another site, and again the Vandals fought well until another brother of Gelimer died. Belisarius captured the second city of the Vandals, Hippo, which assured the end of the Vandals. The King Gelimer surrendered and the Vandal men were either enslaved or fled the land and the Vandal women became the wives of the Eastern Roman soldiers. The deposed king, however, fared very well, as he received large estates and pensions and even his difference in religion was tolerated.

Romano British are one of the non-playable factions in the Barbarian Invasion expansion for Rome: Total War. It is possible to make them playable but only by substantial alterations to the vanilla game, or by using a script.

They have a mix of Roman legionary infantry and more Barbarian units. One of their best units are Graal Knights, a powerful mounted unit, that is heavy armoured. They are in the Roman culture group.
Game Play
Starting Position
The Romano British do not start on the map, instead they emerge if the roman provinces in Britain are captured. They are unique in the game as the only faction able to survive without owning a settlement, whilst not also being a horde capable faction.

Units
Their roster is small and is almost entirely composed of renamed Western Roman Empire units.

AAR's

The Western Roman Empire is one of the playable factions in Barbarian Invasion.

By the time of Barbarian Invasion, the Roman Empire is well and truly in decline. The Western Roman Empire is the larger, but poorer part of the old Empire. It is most at risk from the oncoming Barbarian Hordes. However, all is not lost. The WRE can still field an impressive army, and a skilled player can bring the Empire to new heights - including reunification with the East.

Game Play
Starting Position
At the beginning of the game, the Western Roman Empire ranges from the British Isles in the north to the deserts of Africa in the south. It is the largest faction in the game, controlling Italy, Gaul, Illyria, Pannonia, Britain, Spain and a small part of North Africa.
The Empire borders the Celts in the north, the Franks and Alemanni in the northeast, the Eastern Roman Empire in the east and the Berbers in the south.
Your empire is also divided between pagans and christians, with your faction leader being christian, leading to public order penalties in many of your settlements.

Win Conditions
In order to achieve victory the Westerm Roman Empire must control 34 provinces, including Northern Italy (Rome), Africa (Carthage), Taraconensis (Tarraco) and Thracia (Constantinople).

Units
Strategy guides
Playing as the Western Empire is the toughest challenge in the game. However the easiest way in which to deal with this, is to let cities rebel and recapture them, exterminating the population. This will give you a fresh start and will also increase the value of the settlement. However to make the empire a prosporos place you must kill Valentinus the emperor, his attributes mean that he is a terrible administator and an even worse General. For the sake of the Empire he must be killed. Unless you kill Valentinius, the WRE will quickly fall apart. However the settlements you must keep hold of are Rome, Ravanna, Tarraco, and Carthage, as these four on there own make up the majority of your income in the first turns of the game.

RTW: The Western Roman Empire Empire Walkthrough, .

With the WRE you need to destroy the Celts and Berbers, exterminate their cities as your economy is in tatters. Spain will lose you a lot of money so sort that out asap. Attacking the barbarian factions is all very well, but in reality it simply speeds up the time when the hordes attack you. What I did was simply build loads of camps on my frontier with the barbarian and repel any invasions. The Hordes will appear soon enough and weakened. while you are waiting for them take Africa and start assulting the Sassanids and the ERE. Once you have defeated the hordes you now have vast amounts of men to swarm the Barbarians with. The ultimate destruction of all of these peoples will be quick and easy. Leave garrisons and head east. Destroy and maim anyone whom you come across. By now the in the East your legeasily to rebelsions should have reduced the Sassanids to nothing and you can perform a pincer movement through the ERE.

The world is yours and the WRE has been restored to its rightful place! More importantly however, you have completed Barbarian Invasion with the most difficult faction on the game!!!

Peasants are reluctant warriors, at best. Going to war is just one more burden of a hard life.

Overview
Peasants are reluctant warriors, but numbers are useful in all armies. Forcing peasants to fight is one way of getting lots of men in the field quickly and cheaply. They have little tactical sense, and even less willingness to fight - they would rather be defending their own homes than be dragged to a battle they neither care about nor understand. If nothing else, they are useful when there's digging to be done! They are, however, experts at reading the land and hiding whenever there is cover.

Details
"Civilized" Peasants

Civilized peasants have the lowest stats in the game and nothing but a knife for offense. they are nigh on useless in melee, although their large unit size lets them hang on for a short while against most units as that many take time to hack though. They are also very cheap, so they are great for suicidal tasks like pushing rams or digging risky sap points. They can also be stationed outside settlements during combat so enemy defenses will shoot at them rather than other units.
Another great use of them is to guard settlements that are not likely to be attacked by other factions. They have the lowest upkeep of all units and combined with their large unit size they are more effective at public order management than other units. One downside of this use is that you will need a small group of actual combat troops to take care of rebels and brigands. Especially for large empires, this strategy can save you enormous amounts of money.
Eastern Peasants

These peasants use a pitchfork. They have much better stats and cost a little more. they can be a tolerable unit for distraction sometimes.
