Germania are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.

Game Play
Germans start below Scandinavia. They are bordered by Gaul to the west and are close to the House of Julii to the south. Dacia will also soon be coming knocking on the doors from the east.

Starting Position
They start below Scandiniavia with several villages and towns under their control:

DAMME-CAPITAL

VICUS MARCOMANNI

TRIER

MOGONTIACUM

BATAVORDUM

Win Conditions
LONG CAMPAIGN: Hold 50 provinces including Rome

SHORT CAMPAIGN:Hold 15 provinces and outlast or destroy Dacia and Scythia

Units
Units are barbarian and include powerful infantry, the spear warband, slow but strong and the only barbarian unit able to form a phalanx, a more than adequate cavalry, including, at level three, the Gothic cavalry, which is really very good, and good long range Chosen archers.

Your early army would include four or five spear warbands, a couple of axemen posted behind and just inside the outermost spears (to guard the flanks), a couple of barbarian cavalry (to guard the flanks and run down routing opponents) posted behind the axeman, and your general. Roll these guys into the enemy and watch them melt away.

A later full stack army would include 7 spears, three Chosen axemen (2 posted as above to guard the flanks and one behind the center of the line to prevent breaks and guard the archers), five Chosen archers in the center, four Gothic cavs (posted behind the Chosen axemen on the flanks) and your general. These guys will beat the best Roman army straight up. Be careful to protect the flanks, and when you have done that, loose the axemen and Gothic cavs behind enemy lines and chase down the routers.

Unique Units
BERSERKERS: Fanatic heroic infantry that will almost never rout. Can be recruited by building shrine to Donar.

SCREECHING WOMEN: Women that have special attack of reducing enemy morale and increasing friendly morale. Recruitable by building shrine to Freya.

GOTHIC CALVARY: The best calvary able to be recruited by the barbarians, they're well armored and have great charge capabilities. They can be recruited by building a certain shrine.

NIGHT RAIDERS: The ultimate Germanian soldiers, these troops are excellent in attack and defense, and can terrify enemy troops when they spring out of the forests.

Strategy guides
Possible strategy with Germanics is to expand into Gaul territory before being ready to conquer Italy.
Also it is possible to conquer Britain before challenging Romans.

Mallerd: /* Artillery Units */

Overview
To enter cheats, first open the console by hitting the <code>~</code> key, or the <code>@</code> key on some keyboards, or the <code>ò</code> key on italian keyboards, or the ñ key on Spanish keyboards. Then you can enter any of the cheats listed in the sections below.

A note on multiword names:
:If you need to specify the name of a city, character, etc. that is more than one word then you have to put quotes around it. Use this for characters who have a surname. However, if the character has a preposition in his or her name, such as; "of", "von", "ah", etc... (the preposition is always lower-cased and before the name of a city, region, or country), then you must enter the character's name in the cheat like this, for example, <code>give_trait "Dietrich von_Saxony" <trait name></code>. Make sure the name is properly spelled and capitalized.

:If a character has a first and a last name as well as a name of a city, region or country, you must put an underscore between the first and last name, then a space, and then the second portion. For example: 'Mael Brigde mac Broccin' must translate to 'Mael_Brigde mac_Broccin'.

:However, sometimes the game will forget there needs to be an underscore (especially during the first turn), or even if the character has a last name or hails from a certain area, such as a character who gains a title for a last name. If this happens, either save and load to reset, or wait until the next turn. For instance, if Dietrich von Saxony gained a title after his first name, and lost the "von Saxony" part, then next turn, or the next time you reload, all you should have to enter is <code>give_trait "Dietrich" <trait name></code>. If the character's name contains a dash, be sure to include it. Names such as "Muhammad Al-Mustansir" will work, because of the dash, so don't worry about those. No matter what the character's name is, it is possible to enter the name in a cheat. Just make sure you use the <code>""</code>.

:Another simple way to give a character trait is to bring the character out of the city, then highlighting the character card and just type <code>give_trait this <trait name></code>. It only works when the character is not located in a city or fort.

Strategic map cheats
*; add_money <amount>
: E.g., <code>add_money 40000</code>. This will give you that much money. The maximum possible you can get from this is 40,000 at a time, but you can enter it many times. Try pressing the "arrow up" to enter the last entry so if you type Enter, Arrow Up, Enter, Arrow Up etc. you have a lot of cash without much typing.
*; add_population <city name> <amount>
: E.g., <code>add_population London 3000</code>. Adds the specified population (limit is 4000). Negative amounts of population can also be 'added' to raise public order, e.g., <code>add_population London -3000</code>.
*; auto_win "attacker/defender" make sure to put the one you want or you could acceidentally destroy a good portion of your army. May result in "draw".
: Wins the next automated battle.
*; kill_character <character name>
: Kills the respective character. May not work.
*; process_cq <city name>
: E.g., <code>process_cq London</code>. Finish building every building in the construction queue of the city. You still have to pay for the buildings.
*; show_cursorstat
: Not really a cheat but useful for modding, and moving around characters faster, if you use the move_character cheat. Gives co-ordinates (in x,y, form) and region name of the location under your cursor.
*; move_character z,x,y
: E.g., <code>move_character Anselm,197,94</code>, Very useful for assassination and emissary missions. Lets you instantly transport a character (z) to any valid point on the map. Use the show_cursorstat cheat to get the x and y coordinates. There are no spaces between the commas.
*; toggle_fow
: Turns the normal Fog of War on or off depending on initial state. Do be aware that if you have the Fog of War off, and decide to end your turn, then it will take a lot longer to get to your next turn, because the movements of every character on the map will be shown and waited for.
*; toggle_terrain
: Not really a cheat but useful for modding, displays the information from map_regions, climates, groundtypes and features files overlayed on strategic map. See this post for details.
*; create_unit <desired general or settlement> <desired unit's name> <number of units (1-5)> <experience level (1-9)> <armor level (1-3)> <weapon level (1-3)>
: E.g., <code>create_unit Jerusalem "Knights Templar" 5 9 3 3</code>. You now have 5 Knights Templar with 9 experience and level 3 weapons and armor in Jerusalem. A note from experience, some unit names are different. Like for instance, if you want Retinue Longbowmen, you have to enter "Dismounted Longbowmen". All names can be found in the "export_descr_buildings" file, under the buildings where you would normally recruit them.
*; give_trait <character name> <desired trait name> <desired trait level (1-5)>
: Incredibly useful, allows you to give any trait to any character in your faction. E.g. <code>give_trait Rufus Fertile 3</code>. This will grant him the "Prolific" trait, and so he will have four kids in no time. The traits can all be found in "export _descr_character_traits" file, which is incredibly long.
*; give_ancillary <desired character> "<desired ancillary>"
: E.g., <code>give_ancillary Tostig "assassins_blade"</code>. The ancillary must be in quotes and lowercase.
*; character_reset <character name>
: E.g, <code>character_reset Richard</code>. Resets that character's movement points, can be very useful.

Unit creation cheats
These are all basically Timurid or Mongol units, which are devastating on the battlefield. You can use them against the Timurids or the Mongols to even the odds.

Elephant Units
*madras - Elephants, plain no-frills elephants, have archers on their backs, and can stomp, not as fun as the next two can be.
*rogan - Elephant Artillery, elephants armed with cannons, a lot less vulnerable than normal cannons, because they can stomp anyone that tries to attack them
*vindaloo - Elephant Rocketeer, elephants armed with Rocket Launchers, as the in-game description says, they are devestating to say the least. Incredibly fun for blowing apart a grand army or majestic city. Just like all elephant units, can stomp anyone that gets past the rockets, or hasn't run for his life fast enough.

Be aware, the elephants can run amok if they get too spooked, try to keep them from being attacked with arrows, especially flaming ones, and make sure they don't shoot each other. If you ever played as Carthage, Seleucids or Parthia in Rome: TW you know how bad that can be.

Artillery Units
*houston - Mercenary Rocket Launcher - Blasts away anyone unlucky enough to be in their way. The rockets are a bit inaccurate.
*george - Mercenary Monster Ribault, fires about 30 guns on a rack, can be devastating with the right placement.
*istanbul - Mercenary Monster Bombard, the big ol' gun at the end of the intro video. Fires a half-ton cannonball that looks really cool. Will blast a massive hole through an enemy wall with one shot (two for the strongest). You could try using it against an army, but it only has about 20 shots, and is meant for bigger targets.

Remember that unlike elephants, these units are vulnerable to cavalry, so make sure to keep them protected.

Battle map cheats
*jericho - Breaches the walls of the city during a siege.Does not always work.
Pontus are one of the factions in Rome: Total War designed to be non-playable. However they can be made playable by simple modifications to the game files.

Game Play
Starting Position
Pontus starts north of the Seleucid Empire, and west of Armenia. They begin close to rivers and fords which provide a good early defense. Pontus begins their campaign with 3000 denarii.

Cities:
*Sinope - Capital, Great opportunity to become a rich city with access to a port and mines.
*Mazaka

Family Members
Pontus begin with 3 family members, with several sons already close to coming of age.

Win Conditions
Short campaign: Take 15 provinces, and destroy or outlast the following factions: Armenia and Thrace <br\>
Long Campaign: Take 50 provinces, and become supreme ruler of Rome.

As Pontus are of Eastern culture they have access to the secret police and spice caravan structures. Their culture also reflects their look on the campaign map.

Temples
Pontus has access to three temples:
*Zeus - Happiness temple
*Aphrodite - Population growth
*Hercules - War, Gives experience

Unique Units
*General: Like all Eastern generals, the Pontic general's main weapon is the javelin untill the late general becomes available.
*Bronze Shield Pikemen: Macedonian style pikemen, with good attack but weaker defence.
*Cappadocian Cavalry: Cataphract type unit, with the same charge as regular cataphracts, but weaker defence and attack.
*Pontic Heavy Cavalry: Javelin cavalry with good melee attack.

Strategy guides
One possible strategy as Pontus would be to take the rebel and Greek/Seleucid provinces to the west as well as Tarsus to the south. Then you can move against Armenia and Egypt.
AAR's
History
Pontus was founded by Mithradates I Ktistes, son of Prince Mithradates of Cius, who was murdered by Antigonus Monothanus.Antigonus planned to murder Mithradates the younger as well, but Mithradates was tipped off by Demetrius Poliorcetes, and fled to the powerful fortress of Cimiata, from which he extended his power, and was joined by various troops from across the region.Eventually he proclaimed himself king.He made alliances with various towns to protect them from the Diadochi, and allied himself with the Gauls of Galatia. His Kingdon remained independent until the the reign of Mithrdates VI.Though Mithradates was a strong king,he had the misfortune of being forced to face the Romans. He fought against them with some success for a time, but even Mithradates was no match for Pompey the Great and he was defeated. Later Pharnaces II rebelled again against the Romans and Julius Caesar quelled the uprising quickly, hence the saying "Veni, vidi, vici" I came, I saw, I won.

Parthia are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.

Game Play
Parthia has nearby rebels to conquer and three immediate factions to contend with:Scythia, Armenia, and the Seleucid Empire.

Starting Position
Parthia has three starting territories at the edge of the map: Susa, Arsakia, and Campus Sakae.

*Susa is bordered by Seleucia to the west(Seleucid owned), Dumatha to the south (Rebel owned), and Arsakia to the north (Parthian owned).

*Arsakia is bordered by Seleucia to the south-west (Seleucid owned), Hatra to the south-west (Seleucid owned), Susa to the south( Parthian owned), Phraaspa to the west(Rebel owned), and over the Caspian Sea to the north is Campus Sakae( Parthian owned).

*Campus Sakae is the northern-most settlement on the map bordered by Campus Alanni to the southwest(Scythian owned), Phraaspa to the south (Rebel owned), and Arsakia to the south (Parthian owned).

Win Conditions
Long Campaign- Conquer Rome and 50 provinces.

Short Campaign- Hold 15 provinces and Conquer or outlive the following factions: Seleucid Empire and Armenia.

Units
Parthia has the standard eastern units such as: Horse Archers, Eastern Infantry, Hillmen, and, cataphracts. Slingers(instead of peltasts), its own War Elephant (Parthia is the only eastern faction with one), and two unique units described below.

Unique Units
Parthia has two completely unique units that no other faction has.

The first of these units is Persian Cavalry. Persian Cavalry is a horse archer unit with long-range and melee capability. They can shoot their enemies at a distance or be used as light sword-armed cavalry. They also have the Cantabrian Circle ability allowing them to circle in front of an enemy to avoid missile fire.

The next special and unique unit is the Camel Cataphract. The camel cataphract is like it's armoured counterpart but with camels instead of horses. Having camels allows these particular cataphracts to pack an armoured punch and also fight other cavalry due to camels, which scare horses.

Strategy
A good Parthian strategy should be to conquer the eastern part of the Seleucid Empire, and Armenia. Take out Armenia fast!!!! Capturing the Caspian Sea would be great for trade as well. Their armies would rely on Heavy Cavalry (Cataphracts), and Horse Archers.

Mallerd: /* Elephant Units */

Overview
To enter cheats, first open the console by hitting the <code>~</code> key, or the <code>@</code> key on some keyboards, or the <code>ò</code> key on italian keyboards.

You can use them against him or the Mongols to even the odds.

Will blast a massive hole through an enemy typically with one shot (two for the strongest).

Hello, The red banners means the unit takes periodic damage, i dont know the exact amount but if you look carefully a few will drop dead eventually, also (obviously perhaps) its a massive morale reduction
The Green banners are mostly a morale decrease, but i heard somewhere that theres a reduction in attack and defense

The Seleucid Empire are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.
Game Play
The Seleucid Empire is a fun and challenging faction, recommended for players who want a wide variety of troops and like different types of warfare.

Starting Position
The Seleucid Empire begin in a very vulnerable position, just south of Pontus, in what is modern day South Turkey. They are bordering and surrounded by Pontus, Egypt, the Greeks and the Parthians, and are usually defeated early on because of this.

Win Conditions
The Seleucids win the game by holding Rome and 49 other provinces. Their win conditions in a short game are to destroy or outlast Egypt and control 15 provinces.

Units
The Seleucids have a vast array of units, combining both Greek and Eastern units into a very flexible and powerful force. Their arsenal includes pikeman, cataphracts, elephants, chariots, companion cavalry, and even legionaries.

-Infantry-
Peasants
Militia Hoplites
Levy Pikemen
Phalanx Pikemen
Silver Sheild Pikemen
Silver Sheild Legionaries

-Missiles-
Peltasts
Archers
Onagers
Heavy Onagers

-Cavalry-
Militia Cavalry
Greek Cavalry
Cataphracts
Companion Cavalry
Sychied Chariots

The Seleucids have several advantages that connect the best units of the ancient world:

-Companion Cavalry, which only Macedon has.
-Cataphracts, only Armenia, Pontus and Parthia have it else.
-Elephants, only Carthage has it else.
-Chariots, only Pontus and Egypt have it else.
-Elite Phalanx from the Hellenistic factions.
-Hephaestus temple for golden armoury, only the Scipii had it else.
-Legionaires from the Romans.

So this all comes together in the Seleucid faction.

Strategy guides
The Seleucid Empire have indeed the potential of becoming an unstoppable power. The only barrier standing between them and world domination is their very vulnerable beginning position. All your neighbours will declare war on you eventually and most of them in the very beginning. Egypt will attack Damascus and Antioch, Pontus will try to invade Tarsus and Sardis, Parthia will try to take Seleucia, Armenia wants Hatra and if this is not enough, there's a little extra: the Greeks will try to take Sardis too.

The most powerful enemy will be Egypt as the Eastern factions armies are made up mostly of Hillmen and Eastern Infantry, units that rout easily. Now, the Seleucid Empire is very likely to be destroyed, and very early on too! And indeed under AI control it is destroyed very easily. No wonder, as the only units you have early on are Peltasts, Militia hoplites, Militia cavalry and Levy pikemen, units that are no match for the spears and chariots of Pontus and Egypt and the horse-units of Parthia and Armenia.

The Seleucid Empire have one advantage from the beginning of the war, together with Egypt. Their power lies in their treasury. Therefore, the key to surviving the beginning of the assaults is wealth. Armenia, Parthia, Pontus and especially Egypt (which is their weakness) are all easily bribed and they don't even ask huge amounts of gold. Only faction leaders and heirs will not give in to being bribed. Therefore, use this wealth. It is easy to bribe all the armies sent against you, therefore assaults will become rare, making it easier for your settlements to improve and evolve, making your treasury even greater. Put diplomats at all the weak spots, which are basically all settlements.

Meanwhile, you can evolve while your diplomats hold the foreign assaults at bay. Get City barracks AND a stone wall as fast as possible in Antioch so you can train some decent troops and have a good defense for your capital. You'll have to put up with Militia's and Levy's in the beginning but make sure you hire mercenaries too when you see an assault coming (for example and Egyptian faction leader that doesn't want to join you and goes straight for Antioch). Bribing the enemy armies makes your enemies weaker so the eventual conquest of their lands will be easier. Bribing enemies doesn't hurt your treasury very much and remember, it's only temporary because soon you will have new units.

Here unfolds the Seleucid power: the most diverse troop type in the entire campaign. You'll be able to flood your enemies with Elephants, Cataphracts, Chariots, you name it. Only be patient and careful in the beginning. Bribe the enemy at all cost and keep your settlements at all cost. Upon reaching your powerful units, the conquest of all the realms that troubled you will be easy indeed. Start with Asia Minor. Take Sidon at the same time and then move to Salamis. Leave Egypt for that time and move on to Armenia and Parthia in the north. Conquer the entire east, but not (yet) Egypt, since it is very likely to revolt! Cross the sea to Greece and invade it. After all you have now reached the 'unstoppable-status'. Not even the Romans will be able to hold you off for very long.

AAR's
History
The Seleucid Empire was originally formed by Seleucus, after Alexander the Great's death. He held the babylonian states of the empire, with the capital being Seleucia.
They are at the corner northwest of the map, in a rather secluded area for the most part but nearly engulfing the turkish area there. ==Units==

Unit Summary
The Byzantine empire features a powerful roster with especially powerful late game infantry , ranged cavalry and the greek firethrowers. However they lack a really powerful consistent and easy-to-get ranged foot unit and greek firethrowers are hard to use . Their cavalry is very good as well , usually the best Toe-to-Toe cavalry there is. They do however, have poor gunpowder artillery to smash down walls and the byzantine gunners are a poor excuse for a ranged gunpowder unit.
Overall its a amazing roster, but hard to reach the buildings needed for even average potential in every aspect of the game, However full horse-archer armies can be used, and they have plenty of those.
Standard Formation:How to deal with a very mixed force or one composed mostly of infantry Try and have a powerful Defensive stack in the front, this is preferably done right to the back of the map so that your not easy to flank. Do this on a hill if possible. a extremely steep hill is a giant advantage
As the AI charges you , Hold firm and flank with your greek flamethrowers and begin the process i call Fryin em like they were mcdonalds happy meals
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0031-3.jpg

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0032-3.jpg

Checkered Formation : How to deal with a force of cavalry charging first . The idea here is to open small gaps between some spearmen (Preferaly medium-power) and put between those greek firethrowers behind them. This is again, best done at a hill.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0033-3.jpg

Make sure the gaps arent large enough to allow cavalry to charge through too much, but units of fodder spearmen may be a waste as powerful cavalry will mince meat out of them without actually penetrating , which means youll find it difficult to fire before being attacked

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0034-3.jpg

Ambush !: How to deal with Ranged units coming toward you and you want them to suffer from third degree burns To use this strategy, you must have a large forest at your disposal. and it must be at the center of the map . Anything less then this and the strategy is difficult to use. and it already is! Positioning is an important factor here, If you position a unit incorrenctly is gets spotted which can ruin your entire strategy. Position two melee units between the center path of the forest, keep them well hidden! Then put your generals unit which cant be hidden far behind them, doesnt have to be in a forest. Then place your flamethrower unit a bit behind the melee units

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0058-2.jpg

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0059-2.jpg

Wait until the enemy reach nearly past your melee units and then attack!

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0060-1.jpg

Then Dont let them escape! Holding them is vital

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0061-1.jpg
2 Templar crossbowen with 1 silver chevron have been routed and defeated by 3 peasents and one greek flamethrower
Obviously. This tactic is extremely conditional. But if you have an army mostly of crappy melee units and some flamethrowers then retreat into a forest nearby and try it out. But be careful! You only have one try

On the uses of the Mangonel
A mongonel should be used mainly at choke points, and nearby. Use some heavy units (in this case, varangian guard) to stop enemy units from reaching past the choke point

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0050-4.jpg

Then only fire when the enemies get close, Also always fire BEHIND the attacking line near your troops if possible, your mangonels can cause serious misfires that are definatly not negligile!
Mangonels can explode in two ways, either vastly inaccurate pieces of burning shrapnel fall from the sky after the barrel explodes in midair, or the barrek explodes directly causing a large explosion. You usually want the latter , The latter will happen more often when close to the enemy, far away and the barrles explode into the shrapnel (and generally rarely kill much)

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0048-4.jpg

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0049-4.jpg

Overall Strategy
Your overall strategy is to decimate the turks near you, and to prepare for venice, after that you should preferably capture some shore towns like jerusalem and Antioch so you can finish your objectives. You must hold them for some turns so send large forces! Overall your virtually impossible to destroy early on .

Manuel Commenus
Manuel Commenus is the Byzantine Empire's hero and is available from the start (and therefore, kinda old) He begins in Constantinople. His ability is to once per battle incapacitate some random units the enemy have, this lasts about 5-10 seconds before disappearing, therefore its highly random. It's recommended to try it when your horses are near charging (especially if the enemy use a lot of spearmen!)

Handsome Old guy isn't he?

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0054-3.jpg

Battle Pinxiety, They wont attack, Pink banners means they have been disabled by the ability

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0055-2.jpg

Unique Christian Trait
Hero of christendom
+2 Piety
+2 command
+3 Authority
+2 Troopmorale
(I have not found the trigger as of now, I assume it must be unique to Richard/Philipp but i may be wrong)

Byzantine Reinforcement
When Constantinople is taken, Some reinforcements will arrive. This can only happen 5 times and may or may not be limited by the number of turns and settlements you have ( The campaign script suggest so, but ive heard otherwise) If so you can only recieve reinforcements in this order Turn 20>/30>/40>/50>/60> and less then 5/6/7/8/9 settlements. Of course you could lose constantinople 5 times past turn 60 and they would all appear as its taken .

First Wave -

2 peasents
2 peasent archers
2 Town militia
2 Pronoia infantry

Second Wave

2 Byzantine cavalry
2 peasents
2 Skythlion
2 trebizond archers

Third Wave

2 Byzantine cavalry
2 Byzantine Spearmen

Fifth Wave

2 Alamanoi
2 Byzantine Guard Archers
2 Byzantine Spearmen
2 Poronoia infantry

The Fourth Crusade
Around roughly turn seventeen, the Fourth Crusade (represented by Venice) will arrive in the land west of Constantinople. Usually they will have three mid-to-full stacks, consisting of:

3 generals

3 mailed Knights

3 Dismounted feudal knights

2 ballistae

5 Mounted crossbowmen

2 Pavise crossbow militia

2 Italian spear militia

2 armoured sergeants

2 catapults

2 trebuchets

3 dismounted crusader knights

3 Pavise Crossbow Militia

2 crusader sergeants

2 crusader knights

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0051-3.jpg

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0052-3.jpg

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0053-3.jpg

A vaguely clever tactic to employ against the Fourth Crusade if you need a little extra time is to construct three forts just west of Constantinople like so:

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm243/jamesDsibley/Castles.jpg

It doesn't really matter what you fill them with, as long as there's something in them. The reason for all this is that Venice actually starts off the campaign as a neutral faction towards you (despite the message telling you that they have set their sights on Constantinople and the blatant nature of the aims). Anyway, this means that due to the stupidity of the AI the Venetian armies will stop in the three fort's zones of control and do little else, their lack of a navy means they can't flank the forts by sea either. This leaves you time to finish off that army of Vangarian Guards - or ship an extra army up from Rhodes or Smyrna, whatever.

Overview
In M2TW, Sicily is quite a powerful faction in all periods, lacking in true elite troops in any area but being good all rounders.

They begin with a Castle at Palermo and a city at Naples. This means that to the north of Sicilian controlled lands, the Papal States rule. This is both a blessing and a curse: a blessing as its nearly impossible for another Catholic faction to attack without crossing the Papal States, likely angering the pope in the process, and a curse as it prevents land expansion for the same reason.
Instead, to expand, Sicily should use her navy. The castles at Tunis (Tunisia), Ajaccio (Corsica) and Cagliari (Sardinia) can be taken. If converted into cities, these can become a considerable source of income.

Also, thanks to this position, if the pope calls a crusade on a city in the holy land, armies from Sicily can travel by sea, shortening the journey considerably (but meaning the army will have to be larger from the outset as crusading mercenaries cannot be recruited at sea).

As an Italian faction, the Kingdom of Sicily has access to both powerful Italian ships (essential for success as its more likely to employ seaborne invasions than other Catholic factions) and the very effective Italian Militia units.
Some unique units augment this, Norman knights (both mounted and dismounted) chief amongst them, who replace feudal knights in Sicily's roster and are more than a match for most early knights. The dismounted version is especially powerful against other Italian factions in melee as they don't really gain a reply to them until later on in the game (though, remember, they have to get into melee first..). Sicily can also make use of its cosmopolitan populace and recruit Muslim archers, who are the most effective archers available to a (Southern European) Catholic faction.

Unfortunately, Sicilian artillery isn't that impressive. This all combines to give the assumption that they are a very assault oriented army, with little patience for skirmishing, who would much rather fight over enemy walls then blast through them.

Overview
Assassins are a campaign map unit which have been featured in all of the Total War Games. They are used to kill enemy units and rebellious generals. In Medieval: Total War they could also be used on your own generals if you felt they were about to rebel.

Assassins gain Valour/Subterfuge through assassinating victims. Sometimes hero Assassins are created (Medieval only as far as I know) that already have a lot of valour. It is wise to train Assassins by making them assassinate Princesses, Emissaries and Assassins before trying to assassinate Generals, Faction leaders and even the Pope.

Mallerd: /* Strategic map cheats */

Overview
To enter cheats, first open the console by hitting the <code>~</code> key, or the <code>@</code> key on some keyboards.

You can use them against him or the Mongols to even the odds.

If you ever played as Carthage in Rome: TW you know how bad that can be.

Will blast a massive hole through an enemy typically with one shot (two for the strongest).

-Cataphracts, only Armenia and Parthia had it else.

The House of Julii are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War, that are available the first time you play the campaign. Named after the powerful Julii family, and most arguably the most famous Roman of all.

Game Play
The House of the Julii are one of three powerful Roman families. They must obey SPQR for some time before becoming powerful enough to challenge Rome herself.

Starting Position
The Julii start at the north of Italian peninsula and their prime objective is to expand towards Gauls and other barbarians.

*Aretium: Capital city located in the west part of Julii regions.
*Arminium: City located to the east isn't so developed as Capital but it is good too.

Win Conditions
*Long Campaign: Hold 50 provinces including Rome.
*Short Campaign: Hold 15 provinces and outlast or destroy Gauls.

Units
All Roman factions share the same units. However, at a certain point in the game, the unit roster changes radically with the Marian reforms, which occurs when you build an Imperial Palace in one of your settlements in Italy. The Marian Reforms introduce more powerful units such as the Legionary Cohort replacing the old-style legions.

Unique Units
Samnite Gladiators: Every Roman faction has its own variant of gladiator. Samnites are recruitable with amphitheater and are perhaps the most powerful gladiators.

Arcani: Unique unit for the Julii faction, can be recruited from a certain pantheon. Arcani are mostly soldiers and spies, on the battlefield expert at ambushing because they can hide everywhere and they use terrifying masks that scare the enemy soldiers.

Strategy guides
One possible Julii strategy is to expand to the north and destroy Gaul while intercepting other Roman factions' moves and possibly conquering parts of Africa and Greece.

*See House of Julii - RTW guide for a comprehensive guide.

History
The Julii faction are based on the Julius one of the most powerful patrician families of ancient Rome.

Gaius Julius Caesar was the most famous member of the family and one of the most most influential men in world history. His military conquests expanded the Roman Empire as far as Britain, but conflicts with Pompey and the Roman Senate led to a civil war which began in 49 BC when Caesar led his legions across the Rubicon river. The Rubicon was the border line between Cisalpine Gaul and Italy which Roman generals where prohibited from crossing with their armies, Caesar's decision to cross constituted an act of war.

Many other famous Romans also bear the same family name.

BERSERKERS: Fanatic heroic infantry that will never run off the field while in bloodlust.

Possible strategy with Germans is to expand into Gaul territory before being ready to conquer Italy.
Also it is possible to conquer Britain before challenging Romans.
History
Greece was firstly only consisted of few Greek city-states. They became powerful because Alexander the Great ( born 346BC) led them to conquer much of the then known world. Greek architecture and art were famous. There are few places in world that haven't felt them and their influence. After the death of Alexander the Great his kingdom became separated states including: Greek cities, Thrace , Macedon , Seleucid Empire , Egypt , Pontus and Armenia. All of these countries were ruled by his successors, but none of them were powerful enough to keep his empire together.

The Sassanids are one of the playable factions in the Barbarian Invasion for Rome: Total War.
Game Play
The Sassanids are one of the more diverse factions in the game. They have lightly armoured units, but also extremely heavy ones as well. They can also build Royal Roads which is the equivalent of a highway.
Starting Position
The Sassanids start with Hatra, Ctesphion, Arsakia, Artaxarta, and Phraaspa. The Sassanids are bordering the Eastern Roman Empire and Rebels nearby. As a Sassanids player, your main goal would be to eliminate the Eastern Roman Empire.

Win Conditions
Imperial Campaign - Conquer Aegyptus(Egypt), Palastine(Jerusalem), Byzantium(Constantinople), and hold 35 provinces.

Units
The Sassanid unit roster is aimed for desert warfare. The Sassanids use a combination of light missile units with medium infantry and light or heavy cavalry. A standard unit for the Sassanid roster is the Levy Spearmen, which is used until Army Barracks can be built.

Unique Units
The Sassanid unit roster is unique, but they also have really powerful units in their roster. The first one is the Clibinarii, a heavy cataphract-type unit that also wields a bow. The second one is the Sughdian Warriors which are moderately armoured and use an armour-piercing mace. The final special unit is their War Elephants which only they can train.

Strategy guides
Begin by crushing the Roman Empires and then destory the Hordes before they can take any cities.
Taking Turkey is a good idea as it gives you acess to the lucrative Aegean Sea.
