True, but the dukes of the empire gradually gained autonomy, which made the title of Emperor an empty title. The duchies often fought eachother. So the HRE was perhaps more a term that is used to call the German duchies that fought eachother continiously.
The Papal States is a non-playable faction in Medieval II: Total War. Historically the Papal States was one of the major Italian states, until the Unification of Italy in 1861. The head of the States is always the Pope, who leads "God's Armies" into battle, and governs the only Papal city in the game, Rome. Players cannot play as the Papal States unless enabled by modding the descr_strat file. When trying to unlock the Papal States and other non-playable factions, you should remember that gameplay as them can be unstable.

Unique Characteristics
The Papacy is the only faction that:
* can control Inquisitors (see below for more information).
* can excommunicate Catholic factions.
* gives the player missions (from the Pope that is; other campaign missions come from agents, family members or a Council of Nobles). Through this, the Papacy is like an "invisible hand" that controls the balance of power in the campaign.
* has no family tree - although it has "family members", these generals are bachelors (they are immune from marriage) and immune to bribery.
* is the only indestructible faction in the Grand Campaign – it cannot really be destroyed even after the loss of all settlements, armies and agents!

Religion
The Papal States are strictly Catholic, and as the name suggests it is literally the "Pope's States". Despite that you cannot regularly join and/or initiate a crusade because ironically, your papal standing will usually be too low. (Once in a while though it is possible, or you will randomly get a crusade!)

Military
Like most of the Italian states the Papal States have limited cavalry, but excellent infantry and militia units. Directly from the start of the game, they have access to the Papal Guard, which can be trained from any minor city, regardless of the barracks that is present. This unit is superior (if more expensive) than the Italian Militias, and will probably form a substantial part of the Papal armies. The Papal States best unit is the Swiss Guard, which can be trained in any huge city.

Inquisitors
If you have modded your game and play as the Papal States, you have access to a unique and quite charming agent: the Inquisitor. That's right, you can actually use these buggers against your enemy. Inquisitors spawn at random, in an area that is either rife with heresy, or in a region that is owned by a faction that has fallen out of favor with the pope. They can attempt to condemn ANY character for heresy, although they have to be out in the open field for you to try this - for some reason they don't work in settlements. This makes it possible for you to hunt down enemy generals, spies or assassins, or clear the college of cardinals of all clergymen that don't support the papal dogma (or even eliminate a faction!). Inquisitors also seem to disappear at random at times.

Heretics in M2TW
In M2TW Heretics randomly spawn where there is Heresy (particularly if there is a lot of it) and increase the amount of Heresy that is followed by the people as a religion. Heretics are agents. You can order your holy men(Priests or Imams depending on your faction) to denounce (thereby killing) Heretics by right clicking on them while a holy man is selected. Doing this has a chance of simply not working or even converting your holy man to a Heretic. This is based on the piety of both your holy man and the enemy Heretic. You want your holy man's piety as high as possible and the enemy Heretic's piety as low as possible so as to avoid the denouncing failing or worse... your holy man becoming a Heretic.

Heretics work similarly to Witches in general. Denouncing Heretics can give your priests traits that improve piety... although if you get a trait for denouncing Heretics you can easily lose it from failing to denounce heretics too many times.

The House of Scipii are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War, that are available the first time you play the campaign.

Game Play
Game play with Romans is not hard. They have the most developed military and architecture. However they receive special missions from SPQR (Senate and People of Rome) for which they can be rewarded if successfully completed, or if missions are not completed they can become disliked.

Starting Position
The Scipii start in the west part of Italy controlling two cities.

CAPUA- Capital city , well developed and safe inside Italy.

MESSANA- Located on Sicily , Messana is good starting base for capturing the island.

Win Conditions
LONG CAMPAIGN: Hold 50 provinces including Rome

SHORT CAMPAIGN: Hold 15 provinces and destroy or outlast Carthage and Numidia

Units
Units are highly disciplined and trained in the art of warfare and consist mostly of powerful legionaries who throw pila before charging. Romans also have good cavalry support but have weak archers, only two types.

Unique Units
MIRMILlO GLADIATORS- each Roman faction has it's own gladiator. Gladiators are fighters that fight for glory and honour never thinking of defeat. They are superb in comparison to other less trained soldiers.

CORVUS QUINQUIREME - quite a good battleship, a slight improvement over the regular Quinquireme. Can be recruited, if you have an Awesome Temple to Neptune in your capital.

DECERE - the best battleship available to any nation, Decere requires a Pantheon to Neptune. It is better than Corvus Quinquireme in all aspects, including crew (120 men per Decere).

Strategy
A possible strategy is for the Scipii to take the island of Sicily as quickly as possible, and possibly Corsica. After Carthage is eliminated, Egypt will be the biggest problem for the entire game, as they send a seemingly endless stream of armies across the desert.

* See House of Scipii - RTW guide for a comprehensive guide.
I wouldnt really make an article for this, However the most likely thing is that your keyboard is non-english standard, And the button simply does not exist on it. US, April 18, 2008 - Last year's trip to the Games Convention in Leipzig didn't offer that many surprises to us. But among the few surprises it offered up, none was more intriguing or exciting than Creative Assembly's announcement of the latest game in their extraordinary Total War series. Empire: Total War finally brings the strategy series into the early modern period and opens up a wealth of new gameplay options. We've been eager to hear more about the game ever since that first closed-door meeting in Germany and we're happy to say the team has finally agreed to offer up some answers...

Overview
Assassins are a campaign map unit which have been featured in all of the Total War Games. In Shogun and Medieval Total War II the results of missions are shown in short movies depicting the assassin's mission. These range from the comical (an assassin's own snake biting his foot) to the professional (The crossbow and the pope).
Assassins gain Valour/Subterfuge through assassinating victims. Sometimes hero Assassins are created (Medieval:Total War only as far as I know) that already have a lot of valour.

Assassins can only be recruited in a settlement which contains the appropriate building. For RTW it is a forum or greater whereas in MTW the building is an Inn or greater. Assassins cannot take part in battles, or negotiate with other characters. Their purpose is to:<br>
1. Assassinate other factions land-based units, Faction leaders, family members, diplomats, spies assassins and in MTW, princesses and merchants.<br>

2. Conduct acts of sabotage in enemy settlements<br>

3. Assassinate your own units if they are likely to rebel<br>

4. Improve the protective security in a settlement or for a family member.<br>

Tactics
1. Assassins should be trained when first recruited. Target captains of armies only when the mission has a greater than 50% probability of success. Continue this until the Assassin's subterfuge level improves at least by 1, then you can start targeting better protected characters such as Princesses, Merchants (for MTW only), Diplomats, Spies and other Assassins, before trying to assassinate Generals, Faction leaders or even the Pope.<br>

2. Assassins can also be trained through acts of sabotage but always check the mission's probability of success. A lower probability could mean the enemy faction has a spy and/or an assassin in the settlement.<br>

3. Assassins can be used to improve protective security arrangements for your capable Generals, Governors and Faction leader from enemy spies and assassins.<br>

4. Moving to, or keeping an assassin in your own settlements improve the protective security levels in the settlement. When teamed up with an spy in a settlement, there is a higher probability enemy spies and assassins will be caught and executed. The protective security level of a settlement is also dependent on the Xenophobia (hates foreigners) and Xenophilia (welcomes foreigners) trait levels of the governor. The maximum xenophobia level (3) provides +3 public security in contrast the maximum xenophilia level (3) provides -3 public security. If you have a very capable governor who has a high xenophilia level, he will need additional protection by using spies and assassins.<br>

5. It is an effective strategy to use a spy and assassin in tandem. The spy can advise you about a family member's traits (i.e if the family member is Xenophobic or Xenophilic) or the structures that can be sabotaged in a settlement.<br>

Concept of Subterfuge for Assassins
An increase in subterfuge provides a number of advantages:<br>
1. Increased probability of a successful assassination or sabotage mission.<br>

2. Higher subterfuge levels might also increase the assassin's protective security ability in armies and settlements. (I am not certain on this one; it is hard to test)<br>

RTW Ancillaries
Catamite +1 subterfuge<br>
To obtain a catamite the assassin needs to successfully complete a mission. On completing a mission successfully there is a 15% chance the assassin will be awarded a catamite. If your assassin has a courtesan then it will not get a catamite.<br>
Agent Type - Assassins only<br>
Culture Type - Excludes Barbarian cultures<br>

Courtesan +1 subterfuge<br>
To obtain a courtesan the assassin needs to remain in a settlement with a lyceum for on turn. There is a 4% chance the assassin will be awarded a courtesan.
Culture Type - All cultures<br>

Skilled Courtesan +2 subterfuge<br>
To obtain a skilled courtesan the assassin needs to successfully complete a mission. On completing a mission successfully there is a 15% chance the assassin will be awarded a skilled courtesan.<br>
Agent Type - Spy and Assassin<br>
Culture Type - All cultures<br>

Pet White Cat +2 subterfuge<br>
To obtain a pet white cat your assassin needs to remain in a settlement that has an awesome temple associated with a god of war/battle for one turn. There is a 15% chance the assassin will be awarded a pet white cat. If your assassin has a pet monkey it will not get a pet white cat<br>
Agent Type - Assassin only<br>
Culture Type - Only Egyptian and Parthian cultures<br>

Pet Monkey +2 subterfuge<br>
To obtain a pet monkey you need to remain in a settlement that has a market or better for one turn. There is a 2% chance the spy will be awarded a pet monkey. If your assassin has a pet white cat it will not get a pet monkey<br>
Agent Type - Spy and Assassin<br>
Culture Type - All Cultures<br>

Poisoner +2 subterfuge<br>
When a family member of a culture other than Carthaginian, Eastern, Egyptian, Greek, Barbarian suffers an assassination attempt and that family member has the Paranoia trait level >= 2 and DeceiverVirtue trait >= 1 then an assassin has a 10% chance of be awarded a poisoner.<br>
Agent Type - Assassin only<br>
Culture Type - Only Egyptian and Parthian cultures<br>
Egypt is a faction in the crusades sub-campaign of the Kingdoms expansion pack.

Starting Position
Egypt starts in a relatively strong position at the start of the game. By been in the South East corner of the map the south and the east are protected and due to the lack of seaborne invasions the north is fairly well protected by the sea. The only significant enemy to begin with are the two crusader kingdoms who will be your main enemy throughout the campaign. You may come into problems though,as time goes on when the mongols arrive, they sweep across the map leaving a trail of rebel cities and all to often, they decide to settle down in the south west corner of the map cutting your victory dreams short.

Heroes
Egypt has two heroes, unlike other factions. You start off with Saladin. He has a special ability that is called Righteousness of Faith and it is fairly straightforward. It locks all of your units' morale to high for 30 seconds and after a while it can be used again. The other hero that Egypt gets is Beybays who arrives as part of the Mamluk Uprising with an army full of the various Mamluk units.

Strategy
Taken from frogbeasteggs guide

Egypt’s campaign direction can, unfortunately, be summed up in one sentence which sounds like an excerpt from a guide to an adventure game. Head east, then head north, then head west. The actual journey is more interesting than that sounds, fortunately, but it’s a sad fact that after taking out Jerusalem and some rebel territories (east) your only option is to take on the eastern Turks, Antioch and more rebels (north), followed by the western Turks and Byzantium (west).

The usual notes about starting money, the need to build an economy, and the cost of the historical general apply to Egypt as well.

That’s the dull bit. Egypt’s real fun comes from its army. As in the main medieval campaign Egypt can do all sorts of things. All-cavalry mobile force? Yup. Heavy infantry supported by cavalry and archers? Yup. Mixed army? Yup. Cheap but intimidating army filled with large numbers of junky plebs? Yup. Experiment, try a little of everything. It will help the campaign pass more enjoyably than sticking with one type of army build the entire time.

I find I love to have small 6-10 unit stacks comprised of Mamluks for patrolling and cleaning up rebel stack spawns. Speed and deadliness, what more could I ask for? Mamluks do not fare so well in auto-resolved battles though, so I usually have to command these forces every time. The practice at commanding horse archers is good for me. In a pinch these patrol forces can be bundled together to form field armies capable of hurting my enemies badly.

For field battles a full stack comprising of ¾ missile cavalry and ¼ melee cavalry brings good results while retaining a mobility advantage. I used to sprinkle a couple of javelin cavalry into this mix, however Kingdoms changed them so they will not skirmish unless you mod your game, so I no longer use javelin units. Fingers crossed the patch will change this back to how it used to be. Alternately I use a force that is half quality infantry and half cavalry, with the cavalry made up of nothing but Mamluks. I do love that unit: it’s a jack of all trades and doesn’t serve badly in any of its possible roles. It’s a reliable cavalry archer, decent in a melee, reasonably armoured, reasonably fast, and has solid morale.

When faced with a city I field Egypt’s full range of better quality infantry with minimal cavalry support. Siege engines are a must, a minimum of two catapults, so I can attack and occupy on the same turn I arrive.

Variety. Only with Egypt do I field such a range of army types. With most factions I have one type, the balanced force with emphasis on heavy infantry and missiles.

When fighting against the heavy armies of Jerusalem and Antioch your best strategy is mobility and range. Use horse archers to surround the enemy, shoot into them from all directions to cause damage and havoc, and pull back if they try to engage you. Mob any isolated units immediately. Remember that shield only give their bonus against missiles coming from the front, and that the bonus is reduced against missiles coming from the right. Your cavalry archers will cause more casualties if they shoot into the back or right flank of a unit. Moving units also suffer from slightly decreased shield protection. When dealing with all that armour you should use every edge you can to bypass it. Egypt has some good armour piercing melee units too. Use spearmen or similar replaceable units to hold your infantry line, and send in the axemen from the flanks to cause maximum pain. Knights are best dealt with via the old ‘lure, tire, mob’ tactic. Lure them into chasing some fast missile cavalry, stop and shoot at them whenever its safe to make sure they remain interested, and then when they are tired and isolated mob them with several of your own cavalry units. They won’t last long.

Egypt has one final tool at its disposal: the jihad. I’m sure you are all familiar with how it works from the main game, so all I need to do is point out the shape of the map is ideally suited to jihad abuse. Declare one on a settlement at a sensible point (i.e. one you can get to via a straightish line of conquests) and you can reap the benefits like increased movement all the way along. As an added bonus you gain good traits for your generals by doing this
Ireland are a new faction introduced in M2TW Kingdoms. They control half the island of Ireland due to an English invasion, which started in 1171 under King Henry II with the support of a Papal Bull.

Starting Position
At first glance, the Irish starting position0 seems weak, as the English control half the settlements on Ireland and all 4 Irish settlements are spread out around these English settlements. However this is misleading, the culture of English controlled parts of the island is still strongly Irish, the English themselves will be busy fighting the Welsh for much of the early game so few elite units will be in Ireland.
The Irish also start the game with their unique character, Brian O'Connor.

Once the island of Ireland itself has been united, its a prosperous and secure base to build up to the stronger Irish units and plan further conquests.

Units
Unit Summary
Ireland has a weak early game roster, which gets much stronger as time goes on, they are notably lacking in archers compared to England and Wales yet Deisi Javelinmen can fulfill much of this role even until the late game and this is compensated for by their excellent cavalry (such as lord's retinue and calivermen).
Also of note is that Irish spearmen can only be recruited in towns, but as Irish cavalry is the best in the campaign, spearmen are not often a high priority for Irish generals.
Early units are mostly made up of very weak infantry and the few Galloglach mercenaries you can gather, along with a few scattered weak cavalry and Gaelic archers making for a very melee-based force with a severe weakness in attacking and defending walls.
High units are quite good, with some decent units from castles joining the fight, Ulster Swordsmen are effective offensively and against armour, you can also get Horseboys who are good javelin throwing horse archers.
Late on units are very good, with Mounted Calivermen and Muire, you're basically unstoppable against everything except a very powerful ranged force (England(M2TW Kingdoms) and Wales (M2TW Kingdoms) unfortunately may be good enough sometimes).

Irish Mercenaries
If another faction captures an area with high Irish culture then they will receive Irish mercenary units.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0026-5.jpg
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x228/Dordor333/0028-4.jpg

Irish Kings purse
You get 1000 added to the purse at the start if the AI is playing Ireland, but it removes 500 from the purse at turn 15 and 20.

Overall strategy
After uniting Ireland, ,the Irish should then try and develop their economy and to help weaken the English through assassins and spies, or help the English and destroy the other factions in the map and then betray the English . If choosing the first option you should always try and attack the English through subterfuge.
When your army reaches about 2 full stacks or so, that you can definitely support (the upkeep doesn't make you bankrupt) then you should attack England or Scotland and take over the northern part of the mainland. After achieving that you should destroy Norway and take the nearby islands.
You should encourage the barons alliance at all times, preferably by making sure the enemy's leaders are always low authority ones.

The mod is based on an invented pre-history of ongoing warfare between Lycan and Vampire races. See Chronicle of the Nightbreeds for the book by Halie Satanus that the mod is based on.

It uses a new campaign map designed specifically for the mod, which includes a wide range of climates and terrain, with areas such as the 'Forbidden Mountains' and 'Cursed Earth'.

Overview
A spy is an agent character that may be trained in settlements that have the required structures. Spies cannot take part in battles, or negotiate with other characters. Their purpose is to reveal:
: 1. What lies within another faction's settlement.

: 2. The make-up of another faction's army on the map.

: 3. Any hidden armies laying in ambush on the map.

: 4. Monitor the movement of military forces in another faction's territory.

: 5. Counter spying - staying in friendly settlements to expose espionage and assassination attempts.

Tactics
: 1. Moving spies next to a settlement or army will often give the required information. Clicking on a settlement or army will increase the risk of the spy being discovered and perhaps slain.

: 2. Correctly positioning two or three spies in a bordering faction's territory - with the spies 'line of sight' slightly overlapping - can provide forewarning of that faction's intention to launch an attack against you or could highlight if that faction's settlements have become vulnerable because they are warding off attacks from other factions.

: 3. Spies that enter a settlement that has the plague, may contract the disease and can carry that with them to another settlement or army. This can be considered 'germ warfare' to affect your enemies.

: 4. Moving to, or keeping a spy in your own settlements can improve public order and help to reveal enemy agents. When teamed up with an assassin in a settlement, there is a higher probability enemy spies and assassins will be caught and executed. The probability that enemy spies and assassins will be caught and executed is also dependent on the Governor's Xenophobia (hates foreigners) or Xenophilia (welcomes foreigners) trait levels. The maximum xenophobia level (3) provides +3 public security, in contrast the maximum xenophilia level (3), which provides -3 public security. If you have a very capable governor who has a high xenophilia trait level, you can provide additional protective security measures by stationing a spy and/or an assassin in the settlement.

: 5. Spies can also attach themselves to armies in order to protect them, or board ships. A spy attached to an army can increase the line of sight of that army depending on the spy's subterfuge level.

: 6. Spies can be used to increase unrest in other factions' settlements, possibly tipping their towns into revolt.

: 7. Spies can improve the chance of an enemy settlement's gates being opened, thus avoiding the need to build siege engines.

Concept of Subterfuge for Spies
An increase in subterfuge provides a number of advantages for your spies:
: 1. Increased line of sight reducing the 'fog of war' in the spy's immediate vicinity.

: 2. Increased probability of a successful intelligence gathering mission.

: 3. It is possible that higher subterfuge levels will improve the spy's counter-intelligence ability (I am not certain on this one; it is hard to test).

RTW Ancillaries
courtesan: +1 subterfuge
: To obtain a courtesan your spy needs to remain in a settlement with a Lyceum for one turn. There is a 4% chance the spy will be awarded a courtesan.

dancer: +1 subterfuge
: To obtain a dancer your spy needs to remain in a settlement with a Lyceum for one turn. There is a 4% chance the spy will be awarded a dancer.

pet monkey: +2 subterfuge
: To obtain a pet monkey your spy needs to remain in a settlement that has a market or better for one turn. There is a 2% chance the spy will be awarded a pet monkey.
Overview
Much like the Holy Roman Empire, France starts with weak units when compared to what other factions get at this time. However by the late period they have arguably the best unit roster.
In the early period, France is average in terms of troops available but has a very good opportunity to expand in all directions thanks to the large amount of nearby rebel settlements.

French melee infantry are mainly defensive, with only dismounted knights being able to fill any real assault role. But defensively French infantry can be a serious hindrance to any attacking army, they have access to voulgiers and pikemen in both cities and castles, both of which can be lethal in the narrow confines of a city.
The French are also in a position to recruit mercenary Swiss and Flemish pikemen should the need arise.

Missile
French missile troops are not up to the quality that their English or Milanese neighbors can bring to bear, with a few exceptions such as the longbow armed Scots Guard and the crossbow wielding Aventurier, both of which can double as heavy infantry and are possibly the most skilled of the hybrid missile/melee units on the map. Fortunately for France's foes, these elite units require a large amount of development to gain access to and have small recruitment pools.
The Scots Guard themselves have another weakness - due to their use of a longbow they will be too tired to fight effectively in melee if they use all their ammo, so they require some micromanagement on higher difficulty levels.

In terms of artillery, France have an excellent selection, being able to recruit Serpentines as well as Basilisks.

Cavalry
France in Medieval II: Total War has the best heavy cavalry of the catholic factions, including the ability to recruit Lancers, described as the "ultimate knights".
In addition to this, France have the ability to recruit mounted longbowmen as French Archers, available from a military academy.

Likely expansion
Early in the game France has the ability to expand in nearly any direction and being able to ruin the game for another faction simply through denying them extra rebel settlements, if you can put up with the pope an early destruction of the Holy Roman Empire and Milan would be the most beneficial and would knock out the most strong early threats to you. If you want to cut England off quickly, take Rennes and Bruges. However if you wish to stay in the pope's good graces it might be best to simply eradicate Portugal and Spain while creating a alliance with the Holy Roman Empire which will almost entirely cover the potential eastern threats you can get. After that you can march on the Moors and southward even reaching Timbuktu which is very merchant-effective. As France's knights and ranged power are very strong in the late game you should literally be able to destroy any other factions left, barring a strong England, Spain, or the Timurids and Mongols

In conclusion
France has a very versatile army that can deal with any threat if used properly. Their pike militia can effectively defend cities at a low cost.
France needs these things due to their position, neighbouring two of the greatest powers of the medieval period, both historically and in the game, (the Holy Roman Empire and England), and a possible further 3 powers, (Milan, Portugal and Spain). Despite this France is one of the more rewarding factions due to these challenges.

Diplomacy
Quickly make an alliance with Scotland, as England will be split, and Scotland needs England destroyed just like France does. Apart from this your diplomatic options depend on where you intend to attack first.

Overview
Russia, the name for the Slavic people north of the Black Sea, comes from the tribe the Rus, who first played a major role in history during the first siege of Constantinople. Afterwards, the pagan Rus settled in what is now modern Kiev. They then became Orthodox Christians and eventually ended up growing to be one of the strongest and largest countries in the world (the communist USSR).

Religion
The Russians are one of just 2 Orthodox Christian factions in the game. To the south of you is the other, the Byzantine Empire. To the south west, there are the Catholic Polish and the Hungarians. Located to the south over the Black sea, and the Caucasus Mountains are the Islamic Turks. Because of the fact you aren't Catholic, you have no direct relation to the pope, and are therefore under no pressure to participate in Crusades and to please the Papal States. You also, of course, will not be involved in Jihads.

Military
Infantry
The Russians have weak early infantry units, meaning regular militia/peasant units. However in the high period they already have fairly good units such as the Dismounted Boyar-Sons and Druzhina. In addition, they get decent spearmen and their most useful infantry unit - the Dismounted Dvor. Those elite units can double as both great archers and a decent hand-to-hand unit. In the late period they can get the Berdiche axemen who are a good shock unit for breaching enemy lines. As nearly all Russians use axes they are useful against the armour of the dismounted European knights.

Cavalry
Cavalry is the mainstay of the Russian army. The Russians specialize in horse archers (Kazaks, Cossack Cavalry) and have excellent dual use cavalry (Boyar Sons, Dvor). In particular, the Boyar Sons can pepper the enemy with javelins and then surprise them with a full charge. The Dvor fill the heavy horse archer role and are capable in hand to hand combat as well. Though most Russian cavalry don't use lances (except the late period bodyguard) their Druzhina and the excellent Tsar's guard can challenge any equivalent western knight. In hand to hand combat the Russian cavalry usually use axes, giving them an armour-piercing bonus over most other horsemen.

Ranged
The Russians start with fairly weak peasant archers. As they progress they can build crossbow militia in the cities and the dual use Dismounted Dvor unit in castles. Most of Russia's cavalry is also ranged (read above). The Russians really shine with their Cossack Musketeers, whose long range is particularly useful against the Mongol horse archers. They can also get the fearsome Basilisk cannon, and put guns on their late period fleets.

A note on fashion- If you have good armouries it can be pretty amazing to see the Russian spear, crossbow and generals bodyguard units radically change their appearance on the battle map.

Economy
Many of the lands you will acquire early on in your Russian campaign will have little resources. Meaning that in the beginning of the game your treasury is almost empty every turn. In order to sustain a good economy, capture as many cities on the Baltic Sea as soon as possible and build ports for naval trade. You then need to build roads in every settlement and hire a lot of merchants because there is a lot of fur, wood and amber resources lying around the Russian plains. After gaining a few rebel territories, you will need to try to capture southern provinces such as Kiev and Caffa, for Black sea trade. This will be important for trade with richer Mediterranean factions.

Expansion
Despite Russia's slow economy and weak early game army, there are many rebel provinces to expand upon. The starting town is surrounded by 3 rebel settlements. This is important because, if you get there early enough in the game there shouldn't be a garrison in the villages. (Smolensk, Riga and Helsinki). Vilnius can be tough as it has a large garrison, so it may be wise to wait for the Poles to weaken it. Once you get your 5 most critical provinces (Riga, Helsinki,Vilnius, Smolensk and obviously Novgorod) under control, you can start the big expansion. There are more rebels to the east, to the south is Kiev and access to the black sea, or you can take on Poland and/or Hungary in the west. There is also the possibility of landing in Norway and getting to the Danes and Holy Roman Empire from the North.

Summary
The Russians start with one city and potential to expand. Their large steppes can be tough to defend, but they do have a cavalry-oriented army. They also need to be wary of Mongol and Timurid invasions. However if Russia can defend its borders and withstand the invaders the way is open in any direction, with a powerful mobile army.

Their victory conditions are:
For a short campaign- 15 provinces and destroying Poland + Hungary.
For a long campaign- 45 provinces including Constantinople and Jerusalem.

The Hoplite was the backbone of Hellenic warfare, just as the legionnaire would become that of the Romans.

As such, they play an important role in Rome: Total War.

Historical Overview
Hoplites were Citizen militia, probably first appearing in the late seventh century B.C. Hoplites generally consisted of Middle class Greeks, as they could afford their own equipment. As Ancient Greece was an agriculture-based Society, most states could not afford a standing professional army (with the exception of Sparta), so as a result warfare in Greece was intended to be decisive. Most wars were concluded with surprisingly few deaths, sometimes in even one pitched battle. However Hoplites began to decline over the centuries, with the Peloponnesian war more focus went on to Peltasts (Light skirmishers), navies, mercenaries, and siege engines. This also had the effect of greatly increasing the death toll, with this war and those following it greatly tiring Greece out, enough to facilitate a relatively easy conquest by Macedonia 66 years later. After this, Hoplite warfare began to die out and be replaced with the more flexible Macedonian variety.

Gameplay
All Hoplites have the ability to form the deadly phalanx formation. They are nearly impervious to frontal assaults, however they are generally slow and cumbersome, their rigid formation can easily be exploited with attacks to the side or rear. Generally Hoplites should be used in the Hammer and Anvil tactic Alexander The Great employed. The Hoplites hold the enemy, while another force (Be it cavalry or more manoeuvrable infantry) destroys the enemy by the rear. It is wise to always support a Hoplite line with lighter infantry in case of flanking manoeuvres.
Total War
Rome: Total War (sometimes abbreviated here to RTW) is a popular computer game in the Total War Series which combines turned based strategic play on a campaign map with real time battles which can include thousands of troops. The game was developed by Creative Assembly and released on September 22, 2004.

Imperial Campaign play starts in 270 BC and is set on a map including Europe, the Mediterranean part of Africa and the Middle East.

Gameplay
See Rome: Total War and Expansions for game-play considerations common to Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion and Alexander.

Campaign Play
The Player takes control of one of the many factions, and attempts to emulate or exceed the historic achievements of the faction.

Factions
:*See main article:Factions in RTW

Initial play is restricted to the three playable Roman factions, the Julii, Scipii and Brutii with other factions becoming accessible after successful completion of a campaign. The three playable Roman factions are allied to each other and the Senate. The Senate issues missions to each of the Roman factions, successful completion of Senate missions improves your factions standing with the Senate. A high popularity level is necessary to be able to initiate a civil war against one of the other Roman factions.

Other factions designed to be played after successful completion of your first campaign are:
Egypt, Seleucid Empire, Carthage, Parthia, Gaul, Germania , Britannia and the Greek Cities.

The Campaign Map
The map for the imperial campaign includes Europe, the Mediterranean part of Africa and the Middle East, see the above image of the radar map from the game.

The above screen-shot shows a number of the features of campaign map play, settlements, ports, campaign map characters etc. The area to the top of the screen-shot is dark because Fog of War is enabled by default in the game. Fog of War means you can not see what is happening in neighbouring areas unless they are in one of your campaign map characters line of sight.

Battle Play
Battles in Rome: Total War can be epic events containing thousands of individual soldiers.
:*See Rome: Total War and Expansions for overview of the battle play common to all three games.
:*See Battle Map Play - RTW for elements specific to Rome: Total War.

Historic Accuracy
Various criticisms have been levelled at the game in regards to historical inaccuracies see:

Overview
Portugal are one of the factions in Medieval II: Total War that can be unlocked by either defeating them individually during the campaign or by winning a campaign overall. They can also be made playable by modding.

For obvious reasons they start the game adjacent to Spain and the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula, possessing Lisbon and Pamplona. Their unit roster is initially quite weak, but by the endgame they are one of the strongest nations on the map, able to field elite pikeman, conquistadors and musketeers.

Units
Infantry
The Portuguese face a poor level of infantry until the late game. With a lack of early melee units you may be forced to use large numbers of spear militia to hold your line in battle. Unlike many other European factions who already possess decent infantry by the middle of the campaign, Dismounted Feudal Knights are a godsend for Portugal. When you first upgrade to a fortress you'll experience a massive shift upwards in your hand-to-hand fighting ability.

A citadel allows Dismounted Portuguese Knights, who fare better against cavalry than DFKs, but are not as capable against other infantry units. From cities you can also train pike and swordsmen militia, who can help to increase the quality of your free upkeep garrisons. Late on you also get Aventuros, the best pikemen in the game, able to hold a defensive position against most infantry and virtually all cavalry.

Finally, in the New World you can train the awesome Dismounted Conquistadors. With 3 higher attack and 1 higher defence than DFKs, and an upkeep of just 150 per turn, they will chew through almost any other infantry for a low cost. Late game armies with a combination of adventuros and Dis. Conquistadors are a hard nut to crack for any enemy.

Missile
As with their infantry, the Portuguese can field increasingly superior missile units throughout the game. At the start of the campaign you get peasant archers and crossbowmen. The armour-piercing bonus received by crossbows makes these units superior to regular bowmen. In cities you can train crossbow militia for a decent free-upkeep missile unit. From developed castles the Portuguese get Pavise Crossbowmen, far superior to peasant crossbows thanks to their shields and long range capability.

As an Iberian faction you shouldn't discount the short range missiles you get early in the game. Lusitanian javelins are capable but not able to compete for long in hand-to-hand fighting. For this you need Almughavars, an excellent mid-game unit. They can be kept behind your main force to hurl their javelins at the enemy, but should your infantry start to falter they won't be afraid to join in close combat.

However, it is only with the discovery of gunpowder that the Portuguese start to truly excel in the missile department. Hand gunners are not advised, as the morale penalty they inflict on the enemy is countered by their tiny range, but after these guys come Portuguese Arquebusiers. Compared to ordinary Arqs they have slightly higher accuracy and are much better in combat. On top of this you are also one of only 4 factions to get musketeers, with their high damage and massive range, so be ready for gunpowder!

Cavalry
Portugal's cavalry is relatively strong at the start of the game, thanks to the deadly Jinetes. These horsemen are javelin throwers, enabling them to reach enemies at range with armour-piercing attacks before charging in with their swords. Despite being primarily a missile unit, they are almost as effective in a melee as Mailed Knights, with only slightly lower attack but a better defence.

The Portuguese heavy cavalry is fairly poor due to the limited availability of the best units. After the regular Mailed and Feudal Knights, you get Portuguese Knights, who are strong but not as good as Chivalrics. Your best option probably comes in the form of the Knights of Santiago, recruitable after building their guild within your lands. This guild seems to be quite a hard one to get, but it is well worth it thanks to the cavalry it makes available. Statistically they are equal to the Chivalrics and crusader knights. From the New World you can recruit Conquistadors, who would be among the game's best cavalry were it not for their poor charge bonus of just 6.

Artillery
The pre-gunpowder Portuguese artillery is of course the same as other factions, but after gunpowder's discovery it is quite strong. Following the fairly standard Bombard, Grand Bombard and Ribault, you get the Culverin, stronger against walls than early Bombards and with longer range than the "Cannon". This selection alone would be only a decent artillery corps, but the icing on the cake is the Basilisk, probably the best all round cannon in the game.

Navy
Along with their rivals the Spanish, Portugal has the best navy in the game. This is thanks to the Caravel, the earliest ocean-going vessel, and the Grande Carrack, usually able to defeat enemy Carracks.

Campaign Strategy
There are two main strategies that players tend to employ as Portugal in the early game:
:1: Take Pamplona, ally with the Spanish and go for the Moors, before turning back at some point to try and take control of the whole Iberian Peninsula - This method keeps you on the good side of the Pope for a while, and will likely earn you rich land in North Africa, but is risky, as you will always be open to Spanish attack on your homeland.

:2: Knock out the Spanish as soon as possible - A competent commander should be able to quickly take Toledo, probably with the help of some mercenaries, then move on to occupy Leon. After this you can take nearby rebel settlements and regroup before the inevitable war with the Moors. This strategy is probably better for stronger players, as if you leave the Spanish alone Toledo soon becomes a fortress, and they will probably take Valencia. As long as you can quickly wipe them off the map the Pope will not be too bothered, and you will hold two advanced cities (Leon and Lisbon) and a fast-growing castle (Toledo) very early on in the campaign.

By the time you have secured control of Iberia and Western North Africa, you will probably have come under attack from another rival - usually the French or Sicilians. From this point, it is up to you to expand as you wish.

Early Situations
In the beginning, Portugal starts out with just Lisbon and Pamplona, and it can be difficult expanding from there. Eventually, the Moors or the Spanish will attack you, so either keep large armies in your territories, or defeat them, because betrayal is likely to happen.
It is wise to train Assassins by making them assassinate Princesses, Emissaries and other Assassins before trying to assassinate Generals, Faction leaders or even the Pope.

In Shogun and Medieval Total War II the results of missions are shown in short movies depicting the assassin's mission. These range from the comical (a spy's own snake biting his foot) to the professional ( The crossbow and the pope).

Captains can be adopted into the family through the "man of the hour" event. If a captain gains enough good victories, sometimes only 1, you will be presented with the option to allow him into the family as an adopted son. How effective they are at their individual roles is controlled by attributes given by their traits and ancillaries.
Generals are family members and appear in the family tree. If an army does not have a general with it, it is given a captain. A captain is not a permanent character and will disappear if the army merges with another or enters a settlement. Generals and captains are represented by an additional figure attached to the bodyguard unit in battles. A generals attributes effect their armies capabilities in battle. A captain can not have any attributes assigned to him.

Characters have a limited life span and can die of old age, or if assassinated or killed in battle etc.
End of Days: Lycan Rising is a completely independent sequel to End of Days, it is a full conversion modification for Barbarian Invasion 1.6, contained within its own mod folder and with automated installer.

All factions have completely new (non-vanilla) unit rosters, including many less humanoid units such as the giant Yargrazil, the winged ancient vampires, and turned Lycans...Continue Reading

: 4. Counter spying - staying in friendly settlements to expose espionage and assassination attempts.

Tactics
: 1. Moving spies next to a settlement or army will often give the required information. Clicking on a settlement or army will increase the risk of the spy being discovered and perhaps slain.
: 2. Spies that enter a settlement that has the plague, may contract the disease and can carry that with them to another settlement or army. This can be considered 'germ warfare' to affect your enemies.
: 3. Moving to, or keeping a spy in your own settlements can improve public order and help to reveal enemy agents.
: 4. Spies can also attach themselves to armies in order to protect them or board ships.

Overview
At the game's start in 1080, England's position is hopeful. They are surrounded by rebel settlements and already have castles in place on either side of the Channel.

From these castles, conquering and developing the rebel provinces from Rennes to Antwerp can create a strong high period economy, especially if Caenarvon is converted to a city after being conquered.
Another possible route the English King can take would be to unite the British isles first, concentrating all military efforts on quickly destroying the Scots in as short a time as possible (to avoid Excommunication). Although this tends to be less lucrative than developing a Kingdom on both sides of the English channel, it is more secure.

Take note that the English navy is at best average and cannot be relied upon to transport troops through long stretches of hostile waters like the navies of Byzantium, Venice or Portugal.
A second weakness that England have is their complete lack of missile cavalry, relying solely on mercenaries if such a need arises.

In stark contrast to this, England's foot archers are amongst the best in the game, all but 1 unit being armed with longbows (which are effective against armor) and all but 1 of these being able to deploy stakes to ward off cavalry charges.

Infantry
Aside from the early period, English infantry is of a consistently high quality.
Like all factions they gain the standard town, spear and archer militia, but also gain bill militia and heavy bill militia, although they both have weak defensive stats (standard bill militia being only 3 in total), they are effective against amour and have a good attack, meaning that both units are far better suited to guarding a city's walls, as it's likely that walls will be assaulted by foot knights. The best use of them would be to use bill militia where it's likely the enemy will use ladders, and heavy bill militia where they will use towers.

English infantry trained in castles is of an even higher quality, provided that the unit survives the charge, bill armed units (billmen, heavy billmen, and dismounted English knights) are able to inflict heavy losses on almost any cavalry unit, and all make very effective flanking units.

England also has access to armored swordsmen, who are basically DFK with a cheaper upkeep and the possibility of more armor, which makes this unit so special is that it will last all through the campaign without truly being outdated, allowing them to constantly build up experience. The armored swordsmen are excellent against the infantry of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Italy, particularly against dismounted Broken Lances, who they will massacre in close combat.

Missile
English archers are amongst the finest available to any faction, the English even gain the unique woodsman's guild allowing archers to be trained already with experience.

Due to their ability to lay stakes that effectively cut off cavalry from one direction, and their ability to, in a pinch, double as light infantry, it is reasonably safe to leave skirmish mode off for these archers, and hide them behind a line of stakes. These abilities make the English archers, particularly the Retinue Longbowman, some of the best in the world during defensive sieges.

England also has the use of Sherwood archers, whose ability to hide anywhere, and their very high missile attack value makes them an almost perfect unit for ambushing enemy generals (hide them in woods on high ground away from your army, and simply wait for the enemy general to expose his back).
Sherwood archers also have really cool capes, although this is my personal bias.

English gunpowder armed troops are lacking and aren't really worth the price you have to pay for the infrastructure required to build them, especially when yeomen and retinue longbowmen outclass them in terms of range and utility.

English artillery is also lacking (although for settlement defence they do gain the use of mortars) with no real unit that's effective as field artillery such as a monster ribault or serpentine, and their best gun for use against walls being the culverin instead of the basilisks, grand cannons or monster bombards that are available to other factions.

All things considered, longbows will make up the core of most English armies.

Cavalry
English cavalry is said to be lacking variety, and that assumption is correct. English cavalry is made up of the knights available to all factions, then also the unique hobilars, English knights and demi-lancers.

Hobilars have their uses for chasing away routers and are the best equipped to catch missile cavalry, however it's unlikely they will see much use beyond turn 75.

English knights have a high charge value and are armed with armor piercing axes, making them highly effective at confronting other mid-game knights. However they will struggle against elites like Gendarmes or the mighty French Lancers, so be wary of expecting too much from them.

Demi-Lancers are trainable from military academies, they are a faster, weaker version of the French Lancers.

In Conclusion
England are a defensive faction, who are best suited to defending a hill. Their armies should be deployed with longbowmen in front of supporting melée infantry but behind stakes, with English knights, both dismounted and mounted, on the flanks to make sure no enemy cavalry tries to manoeuvre around the army.

In terms of siege defence, England are possibly the best faction in the campaign, as stakes can be deployed in front of settlement gates or roads, and once the battle starts the longbows can be moved onto the walls where they can reap a heavy toll on any advancing foot knights and stand a good chance of winning any melee battle with the survivors. whilst their mortars hide behind walls and target enemy siege engines.

A possible way to force a defensive battle is to besiege a settlement then wait for another army to try and lift the siege.

England see their military zenith in the high period, so all efforts must be made to crush factions that are strong in the late period before they have a chance to bring their best units to bear (for example, Venice, France, Milan etc), unless harder battles are what you look for in a campaign, in which case all efforts must be made to preserve these factions.

Overview
The Mongols are a non playable emergent faction in Medieval 2: Total War.

They emerge in one of the furthest eastern provinces (Sarkel, Bulgar, Tibilsi, Yeravan or Baghdad) around the year 1214, a warning is given a few turns before, the Mongol horde that appears is one of the greatest threats any player can face due to the Mongol army being made up almost entirely of elite units, commanded by experienced generals.

In the likely situation that they do take a city the Mongols will settle, meaning they can start producing more ordinary troops again.
The Mongols have a selection of powerful cavalry, mostly equipped with bows, hybrid infantry that have a long range, as well as rocket artillery pieces.

There are several theories on how to combat the Mongols when they are a horde, the first is to draw them to a bridge or castle, longbowmen, Janissary Archers and Lithuanian archers are invaluable in this due to them being able to place stakes at the castle or bridge entrance which the Mongol cavalry will have no choice but to charge through, taking its toll on the unit.
Another is to try and draw the armies away from one another and destroy them in turn with conventional tactics.
And finally another option is to use your own missile cavalry, its possible for Dvor, Sipahis or Mamluk cavalry to equal the effectiveness of the Mongols, so long as they have enough experience.
Writing Competition 2008
It's time, they said, and my words echoed the same. A competition which has been awaited for quite long now, gazes at the crowd, promising them loads of excitation in the upcoming days. And undeniably, we, the librarians shall endeavor to make it one of your finest experiences on TWC.

Only one piece of writing per member will be accepted, and it's up to the participant to decide the subject of his text. There's no restriction on what you can submit for the competition. It can be anything. For example, if you want to be creative, you can submit a story written by yourself. If you want to write something on history, you're free to go for it. What I mean to say is that it's totally dependent on what interests you. Besides, if you want to have a look at what people have written in the past, take a look inside the Scriptorium. Just make sure you don't submit anything related to Total War or modding, that's all. Above and beyond, freedom of choice is yours!
