Tom Paine is presently in his second term as Speaker of the House, his 11th month editing the Helios, and his fourth name. An active user of the Total War Center forums, he attempts to be helpful (often failing, according to some of his critics) or just post interesting things; this tendency has led to being a moderator of the Common Community (under protest) for a period of about 9 months, from June 2006 to March 2007, to being one of the pioneer Librarians sought out by Tacticalwithdrawal for the Scriptorium, and to his three terms (the third foreshortened by a resignation) as a member of the Consilium de Civitate as well as his current roles.

Tom is what many describe as the archetypal TWCrack addict; having arrived for the Existence of God thread, in which he first posted (with a quadruple post), he has posted in all manner of topics excluding TW ones, having never played a TW game, and has risen to have the highest post count of any member; in fact, this has caused confusion to many a member, and the story of how he originally entered the site has been told many a time. Rapidly after joining he was noticed and proposed for patronisation by cunobelin, and was voted by the staff of the day to the rank of Citizen. Since then he has been active in all areas of the Curia, often changing his mind on issues after the fact due to a stubborn unwillingness to admit, in debate, that he is inaccurate; this is part of the reason for his tremendous postcount, alongside often engaging in one-on-one public debate with users, especially Ummon and Carach.

During Archer's reign as Imperator, Tom acted in conflicting capacities both supporting and attacking Archer at different times; despite this, it was during Archer's reign that he finally agreed to be a moderator, and although senior staff were at the time somewhat dubious on the matter, later events showed him to be a hardworking and effective moderator, if somewhat strict; run-ins with Ferrets54 showed his weaknesses starkly.

More recently he played a minor role in the Staff Rebellion, minor to the point of being a late addition with little input into the process (although, as usual, he shouted louder than most others); during The Purchase, however, he was in close contact with imb39 and other members of those attacking ON, posting often and under a variety of alternate accounts; he refused to delete Helios work in protest, however, feeling that it was his writers' right to decide if they wished to do so.

After the purchase of the site and during the reorganisation, Tom along with Perikles and imb39 undertook the onerous task of rewriting the Constitution, and arrived at a compromise document that the Black Prince rewrote as being unspecific. However, the main principles of staff and Council organisation were as Tom had campaigned for with imb39 over MSN. He ran for Speaker in the first such election, but lost to Obi Wan Asterix; however, in both the second and third, he won, and currently acts as Speaker, a role he intends to resign effective November the 5th, for symbolic reasons.

Tom has an unparalelled habit of changing his user name, once per 10,000 posts. His original user name was Squeakus Maximus; during his "teen" post period, he requested this to be changed to the Grim Squeaker or tGS in homage to a character created by Terry Pratchett. His most recent incarnation, in the 20s, was Ozymandias, and although he was called Ozy during this period the name has already begun to die out in favour of TP or Tom.

He has been an active member of the dynastic games involved with the Curia, beginning his patronage under cunobelin, switching to that of the Black Prince, before finally settling on that of imb39; he has also patronised a total of 10 clients, of whom three have since moved on (two to other patrons, one resigning his rank wholly) and is still attempting to increase the size of his brood.

Intro
The White City is a modification for Medieval 2: Total War that deals with the wars between various Balkan countries and the Ottoman Empire, between the years 1450 and 1600. Belgrade, the White City, is the very centre of the modification. If we were to draw a map of all these wars (which is what we are going to do), Belgrade and its surrounding area would most likely be in the middle. It had a dramatic history in the early Modern Era.
WC: TW is seeking to represent the conflict in an accurate manner while keeping in mind what would make it most enjoyable for the player. Each faction will have its own way of playing. For example, playing the Ottomans will be the easiest, but you will confront problems that the Ottoman sultans faced: rebellions based on the different ethnicities in the empire, treacherous generals, weak and undetermined soldiers etc., while a weaker faction like Serbia would try to arrange its best soldiers to fight the Turks' overwhelming numbers. A ruler with lighter coffers would choose his tactics wisely, ask perhaps stronger factions for help; but if his diplomatic skills aren't his strong spot, a wide range of mercenaries is at his disposal. Although our modification focuses on the Balkans, the northern part of Italy and the Carpathians, the player will be able to recruit mercenaries from Europe and beyond. For instance, if an Ottoman sultan does well in his Balkan campaign, he will be able to fund his generals' other campaigns, and receive local soldiers and hired warriors from them, along with rich exotic resources.
The Ottoman Empire's famous military group, the Janissaries, will also be a key feature; in each region they conquer, the Turks will recruit Janissaries from the local population. For example, in all regions belonging to historical Serbia, the Empire will recruit Serbian Janissaries that will keep some of the characteristics the free Serbs had in battle.
The Byzantine Empire, heir of the legendary Roman Empire, would live 3 years from the modification's start. However, it will not feature as a playable faction in the campaign. However, in the custom battles, a wide variety of historical units will be featured.

The Long Road is a epic 900 turn campaign (6 months per turn) that starts in 1080.

Its focus is on the confrontation between the West and the East in Medieval Times.

Realism and Historical accuracy is a strong desire as long as it's not at the expense of playability.

The aim is to ensure an exciting experience no matter what faction you start with.

Economy
The economy is a central part of the challenge built into TLR. If you aren't able to improve your economic situation, expect to be destroyed promptly.

There are various strategies to deal with this. Most involve focusing on economic buildings early on. Remember the free upkeep on militia units. It can be a life saver. Crusades/Jihads can be very beneficial especially if you raid and sack enemy cities. Merchants, Trade Agreements, and Ports are very important for your economy. Losing a Trade Agreement can hurt.

Gameplay
Siege Costs
Sieges have costs build into them.
:1000 florin to initiate a siege
:500 florins-per-turn to maintain a siege
:500 florin to storm the walls
:500 florin to prop up your new government if you capture the settlement.

Miscellaneous Costs
It now costs 2000 florins to change your capital city.

Campaign Map
The map is a highly customized map with 199 regions that spans from the Iberian Peninsula to the Caspian Sea. It is much larger than the vanilla MTW2 map.

The new map has removed the Aztecs and Americas in favor of extending the map East and preserving map accuracy.

New Factions
Roleplaying Traits/Ancillaries
Military/Heraldry Ranks
----

Military Ranks are advanced by winning battles. The harder the victory, the more chance of advancement.

For example, if you win a battle where you outnumbered 2:1, you are extremely likely to advance in rank.

You can also advance to a point by being a great governor and campaigner. But if you want to advance the highest ranks, blood must be spilt.

*Knight Esquire / Tourmarches / Mulazim
:Command 4, Attack 4, PersonalSecurity 4, SiegeEngineering 50

Leadership Ranks
----

Only the Faction Leader has this 'Trait'.
Actually the trait is represented by a Crown that changes as your Leader advances in rank.
A Faction Leader can improve his rank by going on campaign and battling enemies or by becoming an excellent governor.

*Silver Circlet
:No one knows whether or not this man will make a capable ruler yet. He is is untried, untested, and untrusted.
::Command -1, Attack -1, Authority -2, Law -3, Unrest 5, LocalPopularity -3, PersonalSecurity -2
*Gold Circlet
:This man's leadership qualities have been found wanting. Whether from bad luck, inexperience, or stupidity, his actions and decisions are leading the kingdom astray.
::Authority -1, Law -2, Unrest 2, LocalPopularity -2, PersonalSecurity -1
*Decent Leader
:After a few successful years of fighting and ruling, this man is starting to live up to his crown. The nobility are starting to come around to him, but his people still aren't sure about him yet.
::Law -1, Attack 1, Fertility 1, LocalPopularity -1
*Knowledgeable Leader
:This man is now known as a capable ruler. His decisions in military and civil matters have yielded fruit, and he can generally cut through the mire of political life on his own.
::Command 1, Attack 1, Authority 1, Fertility 2, PersonalSecurity 1
*Effective Leader
:Year after year of wearing the crown has made this man sure of his ability to rule. His laws are creating order from chaos, but seeds of rebellion and mistrust still echo in men's minds.
::Command 2, Attack 1, Authority 2, Fertility 3, LocalPopularity 1, PersonalSecurity 2, SiegeEngineering 10
*Great Leader
:Achieving such success as this man has, his kingdom is now unified under one banner, and he is known far and wide as an able ruler.
::Command 2, Attack 2, Authority 2, Fertility 4, LocalPopularity 2, PersonalSecurity 3, SiegeEngineering 20
*Renowned Leader
:Because of this King's achievements, his kingdom's borders have stretched and his control of it has tightened. His subjects now support him, and he has the ears of most of his nobles.
::Command 3, Attack 2, Authority 3, Fertility 5, LocalPopularity 3, PersonalSecurity 4, SiegeEngineering 30
*Legendary Leader
:This man's rule has now passed into legend. His deeds have been written down to stand next to the Kings and Emperors of old.
::Command 4, Attack 2, Authority 3, Fertility 5, LocalPopularity 4, PersonalSecurity 5, SiegeEngineering 40
*Appointed by God
:Some men achieve greatness, and others excellence, but this man has become the embodiment of God's kingly appointment on Earth.
::Command 5, Attack 3, Authority 4, Fertility 6, LocalPopularity 5, PersonalSecurity 6, SiegeEngineering 50

Governance, Command, and Campaign Ranks
----

*Governance Ranks increase by staying in a settlement.
*Command Ranks increase with the number of battles fought, regardless of the outcome.
*Campaign Ranks increase with time in the field.

Titles
----

Titles are special Ancillaries. They are acquired by simply keeping a general in a settlement for a turn. If that title does not exist for that settlement in your kingdom, then one of the generals in the city will acquire it. It is fully transferrable at this point, but beware, removing all of a nobles titles will anger him.

If you lose the province, you keep the title- it is attached to the man, not the place once acquired. This means multiple nations can claim titles to the same place. Settle the dispute the old fashioned way.

An example of a Title ancillary is, "Lord of Nottingham" with a nice coat-of-arms belonging to the region.

If you take away ALL of a Noble's titles don't expect him to be happy about it. If you do this to a man TWICE, expect a knife at your throat.

Privy Council
----

Chancellor

An office your king can grant.
Your King gains the power to grant this office once he stays in a city with a Council Chambers.
:Transferable.

Privy Seal

An important item your King grants to someone's charge.
Your King gains this seal automatically after the first turn.
:Transferable.

Seneschal

An office your king can grant.
Gain the power to grant this office by remaining in a settlement with a Fairground AND a Council Chambers.
:Transferable.

Chamberlain

A servant and high government official of your King.
Your King gains one of these when he stays for 4 turns (at LEAST may take more) in a city with:
:A Council Chambers
Your King cannot be:
:A Bad Administrator
:A Stoic
:Austere

:NOT transferable.

Marshall

An office your king can grant. Sort of a main general position.
Gain the power to grant this office by staying in a CASTLE with a Garrison Quarters AND a Knight's Stables
:Transferable

Master of the Horse

An office granted automatically once your King can grant the MARSHALL office. This person oversees horsebreeding and distributing horses.
Gain this office by being able to grant the Marshall office, AND having a general WITHOUT a government office somewhere.
:NOT Transferable

Steward

An office your king can grant.
Gain the power to grant this office by staying in a CITY with a Council Chambers
:Transferable

Treasurer

An office your king can grant.
Gain the power to grant this office by staying in a CASTLE with a Garrison Quarters AND having >15000 Florins in your treasury.
In order to first create this office, your King cannot be:
:An Embezzeler
:Corrupt
:A Bad Administrator

:Transferable

Guildmaster of Thieves

Not exactly an official member of the council, but... This office is granted to a spy. It is bestowed without player input.
Gain this office once your faction has a Thieves' Guild anywhere.
:NOT Transferable

Guildmaster of Assassins

Nobody gets this office, ever... officially...
It is RUMORED one can gain a guildmaster of this sort by having an Assassins Guild somewhere in the realm... how the selection process works beyond that is a mystery...
:NOT Transferable, if indeed it even exists at all...

Knightly Orders

Grandmasters of each order exist. This means that one man in the world will be elected by his peers to lead his order, if that order exists on the map (there is at LEAST a minor chapter house somewhere in the world). The benefits each man gets for each order differs slightly, however they are all good.

:France most often (if France has a chapter house) will be favored by the Knights Templar.
:The HRE is favored by the Teutonic Order, but, again, they must have a chapter house.
:The Knights of Santiago favor the Spanish.
:The Knights Hospitalier favor no nationality.

Again, for any of your Generals to be considered to as the Grandmaster of a Knightly Order, the order must exist in your Kingdom by means of at least one minor chapter house.

Archbishops & Patriarchs

Your kingdom can gain an Archbishop or Patriarch by having a priest stay in one of your cities that has a Cathedral. Men who ascend to this position are, sometimes, corrupted by the power, though...

Education
----

When a male family member comes of age, you can formally educate them, if you chose. For four turns they will be able to attend an education focused on:
* The Court:	Education recieved in the Capital, focused on law and how to manage people and money.
* The Clergy:	Education received in a city with at least a church that is not your capital. Results in Piety, possible ordination, some law, inspiring soldier morale.
* The Military:	Education received in a castle with at least a library in it. Results in improved authority, command, and movement.

Note that if in those four educational turns you feel you could get a better education in the blood of the field, feel free to go for it.

Odds and Ends
----

Kingmaker

A man who helped a king ascend to the throne when his biological father was not the king.
This guy can ADD to the King's authority or subtract from it... read about him by hovering your mouse over him.
NOT transferable

Defender of the Faith

The Pope has appointed you King to be the Defender of the Faith... a mostly honorary title, but with some benefits. It is held for life. Your faction cannot be excommunicated in order for your king to receive this. Only ONE King in all the world can have this Ancillary.
NOT transferable

Conqueror of Constantinople

You can liberate the city if it was captured and you are Greek, or take it if you are not. You willg et this trait. This trait has many rewards, but can slightly tempt the man once in awhile (- some loyalty). Watch out if you send the same in repeatedly to take the city- he WILL get the idea that he should be King, not you.

Distance loyalty

Those close to your capital are usually more loyal... those further afield... for long periods of time, will slowly become more and more tempted to wonder why they are exiled so. Crusaders are immune to this. you can "charge up" a generals loyalty by having him hang around the capital, but this will take time... can you spare the time? Oooh... decisions decisions decisions, it is good to be King.

Go on a Pilgrimage!

Those Christians who visit Jerusalam will most likely gain Piety for the effort... but a few are disgusted by the tourist trade and grow disillusioned. Some are uninspired either way...

Go on the Hajj!

Islamic Generals can go to Mekka

Demeanor

Generals who fight in personal combat who also lose a significant share of their bodyguard, and/or kill a number of men in personal combat stand a small chance to begin a line of traits, either Hardened to battle (better commanders), or becoming Humane (lesser commanders)... However BOTH traits have a twist... if you gain this trait too severely, the Humane general will buck up and start fighting like a man again, while the Hardened one, haunted by ghosts and images of all the men he has killed, will lose the loyalty and ability to command his troops effectively. He himself will become much tougher in combat, however...

Royal Dynasties
----

You will notice of 'faction' Blood traits on your Royal Family members.

Now you can track bloodlines even if you adopt quite often.

Also, if you bribe a foreigner of Royal Blood to your faction, that lineage will track too!

Rebellions
----

When a King ascends to the throne he has a chance of gaining the Trait: Offends Nobles.

This basically means he is of some sort of personality that they don't like. So, a portion of his nobles may decide they don't like him. The others will stand behind their king.
If this Trait advances and turns into a worse one, like "Inspires Civil War," his nobles who hate him already will become further disloyal and those who support him will also galvanize.

The Nobles who "Rebel" will NOT obey any further orders. They will have half movement rates, and if they manage to get into one of your settlements, they will NOT move out and will cause extreme unrest, they have no loyalty, no command ability, and horrible morale effects in battle. Eventually these Nobles will completely break away from the faction taking the settlement with them.

The larger an Empire the greater the chance of initiating the trait that starts this whole cascade.

Also, when a King runs his Kingdom's treasury into the ground and has no more money, his nobles may take high offense this- why has he taxed them so only to now plead that he needs more of their monies- for what? To finance more wars? His high standard of living in his mighty Capital?

Lastly, a King who gets his Faction excommunicated and NOT due to purely political reasons (meaning his Piety is also not high) runs the risk of offending his nobles, if he is Catholic. If the Pope is merely playing political games (the King's Piety is high, in other words), then so be it... the Nobles will stand by their lord.

The King *can* (but doesn't always) acquire the Offensive to Nobles trait by:

:Getting excommunicated when his piety is low. If your Piety is high, this will not have an effect.
:Running into debt when your authority is lower than 6.
:Coming to the throne without being a descendant of a King or Prince
:Coming to the throne of a rather large empire (+5, +10, and +20 in size).
:The King being rather far away from his capital city will also expedite a rebellion
:And lastly, Chivalrous Kings can actually get the nobles back into the fold, while Dread Kings... well, tend to offend people, what can I say?

Lineage
----

All sons and daughters of the starting faction leaders have royal blood traits specific to their faction.

Males pass on their royal blood directly. A character that marries a princess possessing a royal blood trait will sire children with a royal relations trait that signifies the nationality of his/her mother.

Characters without one of faction specific royal blood traits have a chance of reaching 'royal' status through a means other than marriage.
To be recognized as a founder of an independent royal house, a character without one of the 'Of X Blood' traits must become king. His descendants will thus be recognized members of a royal house.

Health and Disease
----

Mindless conquerors beware, you're in a scare!
...well, you would be if the kill_character command recognized a single word, but nonetheless, the new health system is to be feared, and appreciated.

All characters start 'relatively healthy'. When they spend a turn in an enemy region, besieging a city, being besieged themselves, or sailing on a long voyage, they have a chance of becoming unhealthy.

The unhealthier a character, the greater the chance he will develop scurvy or pneumonia while campaigning.

To recover from disease and return to a state of relative health, it would be prudent to spend time in a settlement. As sanitation in your settlements improves, your characters will become even healthier, and their chance of developing a sickness will diminish.

And lastly, it would be in your best interest to exterminate every witch you encounter, lest you find your most prized characters stricken by leprosy...
On that note, cautious players should not allow their family members to sit idly in overcrowded settlements...

Vanquisher
----

I always felt that the destruction of a rival faction brought with it no recognition, particularly in the realm of traits and ancillaries. As traits are my speciality, I made a point to see that some recognition was brought to this area of the game.

A general can gain faction-specific Vanquisher traits through a number of methods:

::- defeating the enemy in battle,
::- defeating the enemy heroically in battle
::- slaying an enemy general
::- sacking an enemy city

When a general has gathered enough points, and the enemy faction is well on its way to destruction, the said general will be 'Known to the X', meaning, whether or not he delivers the deathblow upon the enemy, he will be recognized as (one of) its Vanquisher(s).

A general's living and future offspring will share in their father's glorious military achievement.

Vendetta
----

Quite simply, generals that sustains major defeats in battle and survive will now foster vendettas against their opponents' faction.

:Note: A general can only hold one Vendetta at a time, and the Vendetta will only cease once the targeted faction has been wiped off the map.

Campaign
At game start, most settlements will have stone keep/wooden walls or smaller.

Population/city level doesn't strictly control unit development any-more. A regular city can recruit pretty much any unit if it has the needed building and the corresponding Era has been reached.

Barracks give easier access to more units via an introduction system. For example, a town guard building will give you full access to 'Town Militia' units and limited access to 'Spear Militia' units. Limited access means low replenishment and only 1 max in reserve. Therefore you should see a much bigger diversity in units at the beginning of the game. But they will all be limited to the Era system. For example, at the start of the game you may see Billmen pretty soon because they initially have no armour and therefore fit into Era 0.

Lastly, both cities and castles will be able to recruit all units. Different experience levels and rates will differentiate the settlements. Militia will be differentiated by being cheaper to purchase, have free upkeep in both types of settlements, but be less effective than professional soldiers.

Castles are still differentiated by giving units additional experience which is extremely important in battle. Futhermore, the castle unit build tree is also shorter, providing improved units at a faster rate. Finally Castles provide excellent defense against invaders.

Another feature is the (AOR/ZOR) Area of Recruitment Mercenary Guild. Units within this build tree are more expensive than faction units but can provide the needed help in a pinch. The units are available based on the province you are in.

Campaign AI / Diplomacy
The Long Road features a fully custom built AI tweaked to match a epic campaign game-play experience.

The AI should attempt to guard its borders and attack invaders leading to many more field battles.

Battle AI
*Improved formations for the Player to utilize
*Improved formations that make a AI battles and sieges more realistic and difficult
*Improve the realism of missile weapons.
*Guns now require line of sight for attacks.
*Improved pathfinding for units.

Unit Balance / Auto Resolve
Features a very unique animation delay balancing technique that results in more consistent auto-resolve battles.

This helps ensure that units that win on the campaign map auto-resolve also would win in a Player/AI battle.

This is very important because auto-resolve is what AI always uses for its battles versus other AI factions.

Settlements
All settlements have a minimum population of 100 people.

:Villages upgrade at 500 and max out at 750
:Towns upgrade at 1000 and max out at 2000
:Minor Cities upgrade at 2500 and max out at 5000

:Citadels upgrade at 7500 and max out at 10000
OVERVIEW
PRO DEO ET REGE is aimed at improved historical accuracy and realism. At two turns per year, it hopes to provide for a slower and more challenging campaign. Forging and maintaining an empire will not be an easy task as the player will face many obstacles in his quest for medieval dominance. From noble rebellions to increased upkeep costs for standing armies to a regional area of recruitment system that limits and restricts the amount and types of troops available to a faction in newly conquered foreign province, establishing a medieval empire will be a challenge.
PRO DEO ET REGE! FOR GOD AND KING!

FEATURES
REGIONAL AREA OF RECRUITMENT SYSTEM
Upon conquering a foreign province, a faction will find itself as strangers in a strange land. Looked upon with suspicion and faced with hostility, much work will need to be done to bring a new province into the fold. To this end, Pro Deo et Rege implements a fully-realized Regional Area of Recruitment System that limits and restricts the amount and types of troops available to a faction in a newly conquered foreign province.

ALL NEW UNITS
PRO DEO ET REGE offers a variety of new units, ranging from brand-new faction-specific units to all-new regional units for the Area of Recruitment System!
*Dismounted Mailed Knights
*Feudal Sergeants
*Levy Swordsmen
*LAca's Byzantine Heavy Spearmen
*And More!

NEW PROVINCES
PRO DEO ET REGE offers over 80 new provinces! These provinces have been chosen for their historical importance and care has been given to ensure they retain their proper historical name!

REVISED FACTION NAMES, HISTORICAL FIGURES & FAMILY TREES
PRO DEO ET REGE has revised the faction names and starting generals for improved historical accuracy. Now take control of Robert Guiscard and Bohemund and lay siege to the Byzantine-held town of Dyrrachium!

FACTIONS

Repubblica di Genova

REPUBBLICA DI GENOVA
This fledgling maritime republic, in alliance with Pisa, has recently ended a campaign against Saracen corsairs in Italian waters. This campaign eventually saw the Saracens driven from their settlements on the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. However, control of these prized island possessions is still very much in dispute, as Pisa hotly contests Genova's claim to these islands. It looks increasingly likely that this situation will break out in armed conflict between these two Italian city-states.
Should conflict come, Genova is well prepared for it. Boasting a port second only to Venice in all of Italy, Genova has established itself as the one of the world's leading naval powers. Despite its supremacy at sea and despite boasting fine militia in the time-honored Italian tradition, Genova cannot hope to compete with the larger medieval powers on land...yet. A likely first step will be to move quickly into Corsica and Sardinia to consolidate its status as the coastal gateway to the Mediterranean...and beyond.

CHALLENGING HOLY LAND
Taking the Holy Land was the easy part! Thanks to the new Regional AoR System and increased religious unrest, holding on to it is now even harder than ever! But there’s hope! If a faction is able to survive the first few years here, the odds are a Hospitaller or Templar Order will ask to establish a Chapter House. Also, you can count on a limited number of Outremer Knights and Sergeants to help defend your possessions in the Holy land, as well.

PRO DEO ET REGE! FOR GOD AND KING!

IMPROVED ORDER KNIGHTS
*Order Knights now fight under their own order banners and ride into battle on their own mounts!
*Dismounted Order Knights are also available!
*New Unit! Brother-Sergeants - Brother-Sergeants are the lesser infantry that fight in support of the Knights Hospitallers. They comprise squires, rich commoners, or lesser nobility that have given up all their earthly possessions in the name of the Order. Protected by mail armour and wielding maces, these soldiers serve the Hospitallers faithfully, but cannot be counted on in protracted melee.

ECONOMY
The economy in PRO DEO ET REGE has been made more challenging! Expanding and maintaining an empire will not be easy! But there's help!

COMMERCIAL CAPITALS OF THE WORLD
Not all medieval cities were equal! Due to location and resources, some cities naturally had more of an economic advantage than others. To this end, there are four levels of trade spots:
*Commercial Capitals - these are the jewels of the medieval world! London, Venice, Constantinople…all cities that became major economic powerhouses. Should you be fortunate enough to hold one, expect greatly increased trade and wealth! Should you not, well then…get campaigning!
*Trade Centers - these cities serve as the trade centers of a particular region and offer increased trade bonuses as well.
*Trade Hubs - these cities serve as waypoints and stops on the main trade routes of the time and receive a slight increase in trade.
*Minor Cities - a city that can be developed economically if the effort is put in, but one that does not boast the advantages that others naturally possess.

Medieval Classic Total War is a mod designed to bring back the medieval feeling from mtw1, and also features from mtw1 into mtw2, this is not for realism, accuracy, or anything historic.

It achieves this in a number of ways;
*Firstly, splitting the campaign up into 3 era's which can be played separately. All era's play differently due to differences in the troops available to them and what building options are present. Only in the late era will halberds, pikemen (except for Flanders pikemen) really advanced knights (gothic, lancers) and gunpowder be introduced.

*Secondly, changing the factions available so they conform to Medieval total war (or mods for it), this includes changing factions names to conform to the original medieval (eg the moors become the Almohads), introducing new factions (the Argonese, Swiss, Lithuanians, Volga Bulgars and Armenians), uniting Venice and Milan to form the Italians (Milan are used to form the Swiss). All factions are in different positions in each era (eg, the English control England and Normandy in the early period, but England, Ireland, Wales and Bordeaux in the late period) and more factions are planned including Sweden, Ireland and Burgundy, see here.

*Thirdly, by changing units available to factions, either by changing their names to conform with the original medieval, or by introducing new units to a factions roster (mostly made by renamed merc's)

*Fourthly, by changing unit stats and speed on the battle-map, to attempt to make the game more like the slower game-play of the original medieval. In addition to this, elite units were given further stat and morale boasts whereas the morale of low end units was produced, to create a situation where, in the words of mod leader Ramtha, "if your facing elites, you need elites to win".
Mod Overview

Lands to Conquer is a mod aimed at improving the gameplay and balance of Medieval II Total War. It does this through extensively rebalanced unit stats; changed unit costs; longer, slower paced campaign; more difficult to maintain larger empires; and various other things.

3.0's big feature are 3 new custom campaign maps, each using enlarged sections of the Grand Campaign and they all have different gameplay and add to the overall gaming experience. The Grand Campaign is still playable. The new campaigns are available from a new menu option.

A large part of the mod is it's extensive rebalancing, for which i've had the unofficial help of Jason Turnbull aka Palamedes, a Creative Assembly Australia developer.

It also set's up a hosteat version of the mod for those who want to play one of the new campaigns against a friend on the same pc.

Installation Instructions

This is a standalone version of the mod, you do not need any previous versions to play it.

You must start a new campaign with 3.0

It installs to its own folder so it does not affect the default game. Just use the Lands to Conquer icon on the desktop to launch this mod, or the M2TW icon to launch M2TW.

To install the mod simply point the installed to your Medieval II Total War installation, which by default is installed to:

C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War

You must have the Official Update 2 patch for Medieval II Total War in order to install LTC 3.0.

I recommend uninstalling previous versions of Lands to Conquer before installing 1.2.

Once installed you should use the new Lands to Conquer desktop shortcut to run the game.

The changes Lands to Conquer 3.0 makes to Medieval II Total War are listed below:
*Custom Campaigns
*Hundred Years War : map featuring England, France and Scotland on an enlarged map focusing on that area. In this campaign it's all about war, and the gameplay of the campaign will be quite fast paced and a challenge to complete on Very Hard. There is little use for diplomacy in this campaign as all the factions hate each other. Finances are also quite tight. So you should have only a few stacks going around fighting battles and assaulting castles because of your low finances, and they will be assaulting probably because you'll be a bit pushed to meet the victory conditions near the end. The campaign is just 75 turns long to take 20 provinces. But it works well, and you can as always play beyond the end date. This campaign will be especially tough as the English, and easiest as the French.

*Reconquista : Has Spain, Moors and Portugal on a blown up map of Spain. This campaign will last longer than the HYW campaign, and you'll have to take fewer provinces so will be slower paced. But there will be more emphasis on religion. With the increased effect of religious unrest in LTC, and this campaign focusing on the wars between the Christians and Moors in Iberia, use of priests/imans to convert the populations in provinces could be key to victory, otherwise the religious unrest could seriously hamper you. The 3 factions in it also have very similar fighting styles with good skirmishing light infantry and cavalry and a core of heavy cavalry and infantry. Once again with the factions not getting on very well with one another diplomacy will not be much use.

*Italian City States : Venice, Milan, HRE, Sicily, Hungary and Papal States(unplayable) fight it out on an enlarged Italy map. The campaign with the most factions and least provinces, it is also the longest. There will be a clear cut superpower at the start, the HRE, but they will be disliked by the Pope so won't have things all their way. The smaller nations(Venice, Milan, Hungary) will be too weak at first to take on the HRE so getting in the Popes good books and using diplomacy well will help them towards victory. In the south Sicily will be large but weak, and will have to pass through Papal lands if it marches up mainland Italy. There will be more emphasis on city troops as those are the Italian factions specialities, and on diplomacy at first and conquest later.

*There is also a new hotseat shortcut for LTC in 3.0 that will launch the mod with hotseat set up. This allows for multiple factions to be played in a camapign on one computer, so if you have friends you can play against each other in one of the camapigns on the same pc.

*Battlemap
*Drastically improved balance of units done by me and Palamedes. Battles feel much more like battles in the original Medieval: Total War now.
*Tweaked and improved ai and ai formations.
*Improved balance of missile units through their accuracy.
*Cavalry units made smaller and so are now more manouverable.
*Cavalry less effective in woods.
*Increased effect of heat on western units.
*Battles are slightly slower paced.
*13 new custom battle maps.

*Campaign map
*Hosteat shortcut on desktop for hotseat campaigns.
*1.5 Year per turn, and dates shown on campaign map again
*Building construction times and cost increased so as to fit in best with 1.5 year per turn campaign.
*Unit recruitment changed. Units now replenish slower and elite units have smaller recruitment pools. Also units no longer recruited from walls or from castle upgrade buildings.
*Character Names Project included that adds accurate character names to many factions.
*Tweaks to Guilds which result in more varied Guilds in the campaign. There will no longer be the Thieves Guild spam the ai does in vanilla.
*English Armoured Sergeants, Dismounted Broken Lances, Dismounted Gothic Knights and Dismounted Mongol cavalry units added into the campaign
*Ai recruits better armies. They are more balanced and have more higher tier units in them.
*More variance in the date at which the Mongols and Timurids appear
*Merchants make more money.
*Inquisitors made less powerful.
*Increased movement distance for armies and agents.
*More recruitment slots in castles.
*More free upkeep slots in cities.
*Recruitable generals(including dismounted generals for some western factions).
*Some unused dismounted merc units added into the campaigns
*Pirate and Rebel spawn rates reduced.
*New population levels required for each level of settlement.
*Distance to captial penalty increased.
*Religious Unrest increased.
*Corruption increased.
*Income from trade increased, and population growth from trade decreased.
*Population growth from farms increased.

*Graphical
*25 new loading screens, a new splash screen and menu background.
*Menu text brightened a bit to make it stand out more on the new background.

Credits
Overview
Modification for Medieval II Total War by repman, version 3.1 installs in own independent mod-folder.

Roleplay as a real Knight, Prince or King in a true medieval atmosphere and face unique strategic challenges due to many scripted elements on a big map and get beaten up on the battlefield.

It's not for Blitzkrieg but for strategic slow playing players who like micromanagement !

Features
Large Map
Field cost script for human player
Field Army Costs
* Besieging Army costs 2000fl + 500fl each additional Named General beyond the first
* Army in Enemy Territory costs 500fl + 500fl each additional Named General beyond the first
* Army in Friendly Territory (outside a settlement) costs 200fl +200fl each additional Named General beyond the first
* Army in Fort (captain-led) zero cost (so you can set up forts on the frontier as a defensive strategy)
* Army in Fort led by Named General costs 500fl (enemy lands) or 200fl (friendly lands) +500/200 for each additional Named General beyond the first
* Army in a settlement...no additional cost
Assasins +Spies:
- they cost 500 florin each one each turn in enemy land

Career system
Heraldic Ranks

The Heraldic Rank System has been expanded to now include Byzantine, Moors, Egyptian and Turkish factions. All European factions (including Russian) were included in the 1.9 release. Byzantine and Islamic factions have unique rank names. They receive their banners (Imperial Army Banner or Banner of the Prophet) at Rank 4 (Knight Commander equivalent) which provides a nice morale boost to their army. Also, promotions to the next rank for all factions can now be had through victory on the battlefield in addition to time campaigning.
Command Experience
by Oda Nobunaga. Generals now have a trait that records number of battles in which they have led the army. Generals which have never or seldom led an army in battle get Authority and Hit Point penalties (they don't know how to handle themselves on the battlefield..."My liege, don't ride in front of the archers when they're firing...Doh!"). This trait improves by commanding more battles. Royal heirs who just sit in their castles waiting to be crowned King start off with an Authority penalty as a result..."get out there and lead boy!"
Garrison script
All settlements now raise garrisons for their defense when besieged, depending on the faction owner. In fact, every settlement has a unique garrison scheme. The garrison is raised at the time an invading army lays siege so having a spy open the gates or bringing up your own siege equipment does not bypass the garrison. This simulates the idea that the feudal system was basically a system for defense (standing armies being very expensive) and on the approach of an invading army, the knights, yeomanry and peasantry in the settlement and surrounding countryside rally to the defense. The size of the garrison depends not only on the importance of the settlement but the local zeal of the citizenry.
Diplomacy System
Uses diplomacy system from Ultimate AI mod.

The Character Names Project's goal is to overhaul all of MTW2's character names lists so that they are as historically correct as possible. A secondary goal is to increase the number of names in each list, therefore creating a more diverse character (specifically family) tree in a MTW2 campaign. This is being done to address the problem of vanilla MTW2 having names lists which contained errors of all varieties, and the problem that they contained too few names. For more information, please visit our forum.

Much of this project's earlier work was done by deRougemont.

The most recent released version is 3.00.

Mod Features
* Authentic period names (with proper spellings and accents, etc.)
* More diversity amongst names (the modified lists are larger than the vanilla lists)
* All families will start the game with surnames/bynames
* Popes will have proper regnal names
* 18 factions with entirely new character names lists
* Factions titles, ie. King and Prince, in native languages and grammar
* Common regal names will appear more often for their factions

Additional factions may be added in later versions.

Features
All new
Travel anywhere from the Middle East to India in search of becoming the greatest ruler and general the world has to offer. Books of great knowledge were written throughout these parts, and can now be acquired as ancillaries. People of certain regions were better at certain activities; have them follow you and aid you in governance and warfare. Perhaps your men take to the exotic lands where they have traveled, and become very much like their foreign counterparts due to all the Vices and Virtues available?

The mod includes many new traits as well as ancillaries for each new culture and religion to further immerse the player into the world at war.

Area of Recruitment
Broken Crescent will feature a special Area of Recruitment system. Each faction will only have home regions, where it can recruit its units. In the regions it conquers, it will only be able to recruit local levies and special units. For example, the Hindu Rajput States will be able to recruit unique elephant units in India, but conquering factions will only be able to recruit ordinary elephant troops.

New Religions
Having a part of India in the campaign, the modification will feature the Hindu religion. It will be the official religion of the unique Rajput States faction. In addition, Broken Crescent will feature the Kypchaks as a fully playable Pagan faction.

Titles
The mod will have all-new Titles which will bring the game alive. Certain titles will be based on ownership of regions, while others can only be attained by killing the present holder of that title.
- Caliph Title
The Abbasids will begin the game with their leader as the great Caliph. This title will be hereditary; but if another faction leader defeats the Caliph in battle, he will gain the glorious title.

The Campaign map
Broken Crescent features a brand new campaign map spanning from Anatolia and Egypt in the West, through Mesopotamia, Persia, and Afghanistan, all the way to India to the East.

Hundreds of New Units
Broken Crescent will feature hundreds of completely new units made from the ground up by the skinners AlphaDelta and Strelac. The differences and variety of looks within a unit are seen far more, rather than minor differences, and each faction is balanced and unique with their own strengths.

Blood Broads & Bastards
Bloods Broads and Bastards (BBB), previously the titles, privy council, princesses simulated rebellion mod by Dearmad and Pnutmaster for Medieval 2: Total War, currently at version 2.0

Mod Growth
Dearmad was disappointed that in vanilla M2TW there where no Lordships or Dukedoms to be contested and that the traits package was severely limited and contained many errors. So he set about correcting these faults in what would become the most popular mini-mod for M2TW to date. In the first version of the as yet untitled mod contained fixed vanilla traits, a few new ones of Dearmad's devising and titles for all the vanilla map provinces, however these titles were only Duke of etc, there where no Muslim titles to be seen

The mod grew in popularity and the 1.1 build contained the long sought after Islamic titles (eg Emir of Aleppo rather than Duke of Aleppo) and again some new traits for us all to enjoy. All this brought it to the attention of Pnutmaster who, with some clever 'vnvs' coding gave the community its first glimpse at his bloodline traits, which only travelled through the male line and had the rather plain name of "Of Royal Blood" However the community ate it up and where in raptures when 1.2 and quickly 1.3 where released with interesting and varied Princesses, no more 1 charm wonders floating about, now there where hot 9 charm babes on the European scene and the new traits continued to be added much to the delight of everyone involved.

BBB became the first choice base traits package for major mods such as Deus lo Vult and The Long Road

Finally the mod, previously under a heavily long name basically listing the major changes a new and exciting name was coined, Blood Broads And Bastards, Blood for the royal blood traits, Broads for the exciting princesses, and Bastards for the new infidelity traits (if your generals dad plays the field, expect a few to crop up. Some now feel that the mod has grown outside of its new name, adding simulated rebellions and disease traits to the game, along with, for version 2.0, vanquisher traits for destroying enemy factions.

Mod Features
This mod:
Is aimed at people who want more of an RPG experience in the game without it affecting the strategic/tactical gameplay in too overhanded a manner.

*titles for every province along with graphics. Most titles grant a little tax boost, some grant other negative effects... like the will to go it solo (lower loyalty), a few have other traits.

*major system of tracking royal blood and lineages. This series of traits by Pnutmaster will astound you and warm your RPGamer heart.

*a disease system that affects gameplay without becoming tedious and depressing.

*Privy Council Offices like King's Treasurer, the Privy Seal, Chancellor, Marshall, Master of the Horse, etc... for both player AND AI.

*Grandmasters for every Knightly Order- one international grandmaster per order, elected by his peers (sorta).

*Rebellions, where your unruly nobles can turn on you, refuse to move if they get too disloyal, and lock themselves up in a city and cause it to rebel completely unless you send a loyal noble to counteract him. The rebellion is aimed at your King, so if he "abdicates" or... whatever... things should calm down- but you can always fight for the crown!

*Archbishops for each Kingdom and the Orthodox Patriarch! Yay!

*Activated all Ancillaries found in game: Black Stallion, Body Guard, Ornate Armor, Custom Armor.

*Added new Ancillaries: Black Stallion for Princesses, a White Stallion.

*Princesses get a MAJOR OVERHAUL. They are interesting dynamic characters now. Hussies, prudes, lesbians, *****es, fertile, infertile, beautiful, ugly, affected by the genes of their mothers as well as their fathers, you name it. And a lot LESS "secret lovers."

*A NEW educational system for young princes. They can receive educations in the capital (Royal Court), in Religious Institutions, and in Castles (Martial education). They get four turns of education. However, some princes, the worst students, fail to learn anything... sorry.

*Game NOTICES when a princess comes of age ANYWHERE in the world

*when a Monarch dies a message is sent to you o if you have an intense rivalry with another king and he kicks the bucket you know it

*Fixes EVERY SINGLE VANILLA BUG in the ancillaries and traits files...
and more... believe it or not.

The Anno Domini mod created by Shaba Wangy and Re Berengario is aimed at the strategical player who also wants a campaign as historically correct as possible. To reach this goal a lot of new features are implemented. Everything comes at a price though so be warned that turns will run significantly slower than the original game.

Maybe you can use the extra time to think more on your next move as there is very little space to errors! Running a middle-age dynasty is a hard job filled with perils, treasons, lack of money and nasty neighbours. Not only the strongest can survive, but more often the most cunning.

Overview
The Helios is a publication of the Total War Center forums reporting on the various non-TW related activities of the forums, though in the past it has carried advertisements for the University. The publication is also characterised by being TWC's second oldest publication, first having been brought out December 2005 ], and by being one of the most broken-up in terms of its publication history, having taken several hiatuses and gone through a long series of editors. It is currently released approximately every fortnight.

History
In fact, the editorial history alone is worthy of note due to the great names involved; begun by imb39, Kscott and Grimsta, it then fell to Grimsta alone to edit the Helios. After a period a hiatus begun, sparked off by the Helios Political Issue (outlined below) and when it restarted, King Henry V was editing it. After a happy period as editor, bringing in a variety of innovations in style, he resigned in favour of Saint-Germain. However, on the retirement of Saint-Germain, the Helios fell into abeyance with no replacement editor until Justinian, during his long period as Republican Consul, restarted it and added innovations of his own, including the contents (a forerunner of that in use in the present Helios), before finally stepping aside in favour of Tom Paine, who edits it to this day.

The Helios style has changed greatly; the original Helioi were written by the editors alone, and got very involved in politics. This ended with the Helios Political Issue, and since then the Helios has not only been less involved in politics but has also hired reporters in order to put in an extra layer of protection, a practice continued to this day.

GrimSta's political Helios edition was written in January 2006. It was an article featuring an interview with Belisarius which included a large attack on Simetrical. Simetrical Posted a reply, and things soon escalated as a group of members led by Belisarius pushed for Simetrical's resignation from staff and as Pro-Curator. This failed as most Citizens voted in support of Simetrical. some now believe the whole incident was started by Belisarius for his own ends.

The Speaker of the House is an official of the Total War Center forums and acts as a Council Officer representing the Curia in all Council discussions. The office has a personalised badge, and access to all areas of the site.

Tom Paine is presently in his second term as Speaker of the House, his 11th month editing the Helios, and his fourth name. An active user of the Total War Center forums, he attempts to be helpful (often failing, according to some of his critics) or just post interesting things; this tendency has led to being a moderator of the Common Community (under protest) for a period of about 9 months, from June 2006 to March 2007, and one of the pioneer Librarians sought out by Tacticalwithdrawal for the Scriptorium, his three terms (the third foreshortened by a resignation) as a member of the Consilium de Civitate as well as his current roles.

He ran for Speaker in the first such election, but lost to Obi Wan Asterix; however, in both the second and third, he won, and currently acts as Speaker.
