The story of Perikles' short but eventful time at TWC

Beginnings
After joining in February 2006, Perikles became a regular of the Political Mudpit where he was noticed by a few members as being potential Civitate material. His mainly conservative views were shared by members such as Carach and the Black Prince, while he often debated agaisnt Shyam Popat and Ozymandias. He was eventually patronised by Ummon a month after joining and joined the ranks of the Curia just before the April Fools Joke on the members.

Summer 2006
After the ensuing crisis of alleged widespread use of PM's to canvass for votes he was controversially appointed a Moderator along with Evariste and Seleukos.

The Depression
Staff
October was the month of the Staff Rebellion against Archer. A letter called for his resignation from Imperator to either Hex or Staff or the general membership. TWC was in chaos (yet again and not for the last time). Archer had just demoted everyone and promoted HG to Hex ( this being the HG who then saw some unfavourable things about him in Hex, which had some bigger consequences for TWC down the line) along with Belisarius to Admin. Eventually after much arguing, all those who had been demoted, were repormoted, and HG and Belisarius (who eventually returned) left TWC. Hex became a supposed council of equals and everyone was happy (well we'll see about that later on).

The Ongoing Saga of Selling the Site
Besim
Perikles logged on TWC one morning to find:

* A New Skin that was Pink
* Half of Hex demoted
* The Curia deleted (well removed from view)
* All Civitates and Patricians demoted

Professor420 was quickly banned, Perikles told Besim he could not just do that at TWC, it was not how we operated by threatening members and banning them. He then threatened to ban Perikles for dissenting! After some flames and trolls, Besim caved in and gave control of TWC back to Hex. Notably, HG reappeared during this episode.

Honor&Glory
It was 6 weeks since Besim and his activity had declined sharply. He found logging on a chore, let alone moderating or posting. Then he refeshed the main TWC Index and suddenly the Staff Forum and Curia were gone and to his utter amazement Richard the Lionheart had a bold purple name (One really can not understand how much of a surprise this was, Perikles' spat out his tea - haha). On joining the thread in the Suggestus he thought this was a joke, surely the most hated person on TWC was not really an admin, how wrong Perikles was. As more facts emerged people began to realise this was not a joke. Perikles was soon banned.
His mainly conservative views were shared by members such as Carach and the Black Prince, while he often debated agaisnt Shyam Popat and Ozymandias. Strangely, in his opinion, the 2 people who influenced his first 2 months on TWC the most were Shyam and Carach, coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum. He was eventually patronised by Ummon a month after joining and joined the ranks of the Curia just before the April Fools Joke on the members. During this period he became friendly with imb39 after he conned him into believing that Crandar really had returned (Damn him!). When Ummon left the site in May he transferred patronage to imb39.

Summer 2006
After being a member of both the CoP and CdeC in the Summer of 2006 he asked to be entered into some moderator elections that may take place while he was on holiday. Upon returning from holiday he found he was in an election, though many had thought he had left due to his inactivity. After the ensuing crisis of alleged widespread use of PM's to canvass for votes he was appointed a Moderator along with Evariste and Seleukos. With the Curia now attacking him for being appointed rather than elected he set about trying to be a good and uncontroversial moderator, something which he hopes he achieved with his 'less is more' mantra. His moderating style was laid back and Infractions were only issued very rarely, usually for personal attacks.

The Depression
Staff
October was the month of the Staff Rebellion against Archer. Perikles believed something was up when Tac resigned. Later he found out Archer had removed him due to him supposedly reading PM's on MYSQL, however he was not sure of the factuality of this. As a moderator at the time, he was invited to sign a letter which called for the removal of Archer and was to be posted in staff with the signatures of those who agreed to put their name to it. In Perikles' opinion it was a good and balanced letter and argued not against Archer as a person but his lack of leadership and communication skills. The letter called for his resignation from Imperator to either Hex or Staff or the general membership. A few days later Perikles logged on to find TWC in chaos (yet again and not for the last time).

TWC was going fine, M2TW was just out, the moderation was perfect, the debates were going well and the mods for M2TW were just appearing. Perikles asked General Sun if he knew TWC was up for sale (which was commonish knowledge at the time) in passing conversation. GS was amazed and soon Evariste and Professor420 joined the conversation. Perikles simultaneously asked imb39 if he was interested in the plan to buy the site and he joined the conversation 5 minutes later and offered to buy the site outright. After approaching Ogre and finding out about the pitiful zboard offer (£1500 for the whole ON network) they were ecstatic, but worried at how far into the deal ON were. The long wait for Ogre to decide on who to sell to began and during this time Besim reappeared at TWC...

Besim
At first many thought that the reappearance of this Network Admin was good, but the longer he stayed the more he wanted to interfere in things he did not understand. For more details on Besim's reasons for meddling in TWC, destabilising the site and, in Perikles' opinion, hindering the sale of the site please see Of the Exile. Perikles logged on TWC one morning to find:

* A New Skin that was Pink
* Half of Hex demoted
* The Curia deleted (well removed from view)
* All Civitates and Patricians demoted

He immediately went on msn and started talking to Besim, inviting all the other staff on msn to the conversation. A few compromises were hammered out, such as getting the Curia back and imb39 (who had resigned the previous week), Lusted (who had been demoted) and I were given access to the Admin Control Panel to fix the ranks. However Besim did not give us the required access so it was pointless, and Perikles just ended up reading Hex for half an hour (haha). While reading Hex he saw a thread about future members of Hex, out of the 4 on the shortlist all but one have been on Hex (no surprises who guessing on the only odd one out was, but your truly). Then Professor420 was banned, Perikles told Besim he could not just do that at TWC, it was not how we operated by threatening members and banning them. He then threatened to ban Perikles for dissenting! This was a big mistake on his part as Perikles was now determined to rid TWC of Besim. Perikles immediately added Prof's Of the Exile article to his Signature in the now infamous 'The Truth' style and encouraged others to do so. Soon after, he opened a thread polling the members on what they thought of Besim (Link) however Besim removed the poll and added it to this thread (Link) the results were obvious to see. After some flames and trolls between various members (Perikles included he's sorry to say) and network administrators Besim caved in and gave control of TWC back to Hex. HG reappeared during this episode, on the side of Besim, and the plotting of the next and final crisis is said to have begun immediately after the fall of Besim...

Honor&Glory
One Tuesday in January Perikles was visiting TWC. It was 6 weeks since Besim and his activity had declined sharply. Not only had he been rejected by the Curia in the CDC elections and by certain others, people were saying he had tried to 'destroy the site' and after Ogre said he wasn't going to sell TWC he found logging on a chore, let alone moderating or posting. He felt slightly betrayed and bitter during this time. In his opinion he had helped get rid of an 'idiot' (Perikles' opinion yet again, to put it nicely) and been snubbed by the people it had helped. Then he refeshed the main TWC Index and suddenly the Staff Forum and Curia were gone and to his utter amazement Richard the Lionheart had a bold purple name (One really can not understand how much of a surprise this was, being an Englishman Perikles' spat out his tea - haha). On joinng the thread in the Suggestus he thought this was a joke, surely the most hated person on TWC was not really an admin, how wrong Perikles was. As more facts emerged people began to realise this was not a joke.

The next day Perikles logged on in the morning to see if there were any developments. He found half the forum banned and in disgust he posted something about 'HG loving Ogre' (in harsher terms). When gigagaia saw it he told Perikles to edit it out quickly as we didn't want everyone banned. So he quickly edited it and then imb39 presented him with a perfect snipe at HG, asking what his vision for the future was (You really can't pass up such an opportunity). You can see his reply to imb's post in the 'Quotes' section below, he was banned immediately.
You can see his reply to imb's post in the 'Quotes' section below, he was banned immediately.

New Site
On the Wednesday night it was decided a new site was to be created to rival TWC. Simetrical set this up and Lusted/imb39 began the organisation of such a move. Luckily Simetrical had made a database backup quickly before he lost his admin powers, meaning the transition would be easy. The name Total War Horde was chosen at first with an aim of buying Total War Zone and then moving to that in the not too distant future. Lusted organised for about half the mods at TWC to leave there altogether and join the new forum, while the rest were going to maintain a presence at both.

Dispair and Triumph
People were being banned and unbanned and chaos reigned over the forums. Not just the Curia and staff but all the members were in revolt. The plan for the new forum was going smoothly until they hit legality issues with the database. In another sneaky trick Spirix registered TWH.com and put a redirect to TWC there to try and confuse people in finding the new site. Things were going down hill.
With HG in charge at TWC and legality problems with using the TWC database for the new site the plans stalled. Forum life was going back to normal and this did much good for HG's cause as a stable TWC meant he had won in taking over the forum and imposing his will over it. However when Archer and Meiyogen put many of the senior members on a global ignore list known as 'Coventry' they made a big mistake. TWC began to revolt again and the spamming of the forums began as Ozymandias and Perikles incited people to spam the forum with the link to Archer's Plot. Then people began to be IP banned and in conjunction with imb39, Perikles was given permission to spam the link to the new forum. Using the account mafiaboss he opened 10 threads each containing the link to the new forum, they were soon deleted, but people had seen the link and soon began to spam it too, the word of the new forum was out. Satisfied TWC was at it's knees and knowing imb39 had an important msn meeting coming up with Ogre than night Perikles went to bed. On waking up in the morning TWC was under the ownership of imb39, with the chance for everyone to control and influence it's future.

The New Golden Age
Upon imb39 buying the site, it was clear this was to be the new Golden Era of TWC. So far this prediction has not been at all wrong and will hopefully continue into the Garbarsardar and Empire eras.
He has received one complaint about his moderating that was upheld, details can be found here. He apologised for the incident.
Some have criticised him for being too 'spammy', a claim he does not disagree with. However he believes there is a time for light-heartedness and a time for seriousness, but sometimes the lines get blurred.
does anyone think this would be worth doing ? Probably split between M2 and RTW/BI..
This looks good to me - other possible sortable categories could be "Released" - "Yes/No". A seperate table for each game would be the best idea i think to make things easier to navigate. - Spiff
----
Ah I was only intending to do this for released mods at the moment. Ones in progress don't tend to have set information for the other categories; mod_folder, campaign map, even game its based on can change as things are developed! I was thinking about splitting by game I think you can navigate the actual thing OK by sorting that at last minute but it would probably make it easier to edit. If I keep the game category (so it includes patch version as well) I can make it as three tables on same *page and they can get added back together if anyone else prefers that. --Makanyane 04:01, 9 May 2007 (CDT)
HOW THE.. do you make a table sort BC dates?
Sorry Mak I have absolutely no idea about sorting tables, Sim might though. --Perikles 04:59, 12 May 2007 (CDT)

----
Great idea, excellent tables. Just a few comments: some mods have partial modfolders - as a player (sic!) I would like to know which ones are 100% modfoldered before I spend my time downloading it only to find it interferes with another mod/vaniila or even a modfoldered mod drawing from above (and possibly causing more than visual problems); submods should be listed (and what they are a submod of); enhancement rather than just 'milieu' mods should be included (e.g. Darth formations etc.). I wonder if symbols could be used to cut down on space or would this making sorting harder? Just one thing to complicate your dates - you know that 'AD' should really be written *before* the date (if the sorting is reading the alphanumerical value on an ascii chart rather than the number value itself then it might work to switch the BC to precede the date too and use leading 0s?) - (p.s. I've never edited a wiki before so have no doubt got lots wrong! Oh, and Middle-earth should be our map name otherwise you are just repeating yourself) MasterOfNone
Palantir 18:04, 12 May 2007 (CDT)
----
*Modfolders: can probably split it to Yes: Total and Yes: Partial, but trying to put too much info in will stretch table too much (I can't find way of having multiple rows of text in a cell so it just gets wider if you're not careful).
*Sub-mods I'd just put in campaign map section to explain why some things don't have campaign map. Might be better explained some-other way, as sub-mod for instance additional campaign for RTR as against enhancement mod eg. Skymod which can be added to most other mods.... (needs thought)
*Symbols might work - if things only need to be grouped and not sort in specific order - otherwise you could probably have hidden text which sorts it and a jpeg dislayed? Need to experiment..
*Tried switching AD and BC around and adding 0's to get it to sort on alphanumeric basis only (example table added as 1st one) that sort of works but BC dates still end up wrong end of AD and it looks ugly with the 0077 so I'd need to work out hidden sort still? Help guide seemed to imply default sort was by number value so I can't see why I can't get the one with hidden number value only to work!
Will come back to this when I've got more time. Welcome to the Wiki! --Makanyane 04:55, 13 May 2007 (CDT)
-------
Hmmm..weird. Are dates actually necessary? Can you not use eras with a qualifier? Or would that be too vague still? (Roman - republic, Roman - empire, Greek - ancient, Fantasy - Middle-earth, etc. - hopefully
that would sort properly)
Palantir 15:33, 13 May 2007 (CDT)
----
will have a look at that as well - thought problem would be getting things split into limited number of categories - too many categories would make sort pointless. Also alphabetical sort isn't necessarily going to put similar things people are interested in together. I thought date time line might be more likely to group areas of interest - but, meh, getting stuck, will try populating individual tables a bit more / once they are split by game there might be less need for that column anyway! --Makanyane 15:38, 16 May 2007 (CDT)

Structure of Mods Section
This looks like the over-view category for anything else that is a list of mods. I think we need to start adding some guidance here, as to which mods should be in which category, and rationalising what categories are, so we don't end up with multiple incomplete listings (I'm guilty of adding to current confusion):

PROPOSAL:

MODS CATEGORY
*This (Mods) category should only be for listings, individual mod pages shouldn't be added to this one...(that might be counter-intuitive, but I think adding all mods into this as pages would be messy)

*This category should have guidance on how to find and how to add a mod - editing instructions / guidance for adding mods could be on separate linked to page, to include things like recommended template, writing 'impartial' descriptions and not uploading hundreds of full sized screen shots!

SUB-CATEGORIES
* TWC Hosted mod pages - if order of contents is same as that of the hosted forums a quick cross check can spot new / removed mods. Mod description should be limited to a couple of paragraphs and one pic. to stop them getting too long - each mod description should link to own Wiki page.
* Released mod finders - I was about to propose largely abandoning content of the pages I started like :Category:BI_Mods_%28Released%29 and substituting sortable tables categorising released mods by whatever anyone is likely to choose by, inc mod-folder installation, era, type etc, see experiment EDIT: previously in Playpen now at Released Mods.
* Other mods - this is bit I'm not sure how to arrange or title, we need equivalent listings to the TWC Hosted to cover mods that are either hosted elsewhere or only exist in individual threads (e.g. Blue Lotus, Caius's Crusades, WIP mods etc) - Possibly this should really be the main listing and include all the TWC hosted stuff as well?

(and umm anyway :Category:MTW2_Mods needs clarifying if it should only have released mods in it or not)

--Makanyane 16:40, 4 May 2007 (CDT)
I like the idea on Mak's Playpen and think that should be implemented on a 'Released Mods' page that incorporates mods for any version of any TW game. I'll talk to you on msn about it :) --Perikles 04:41, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
Nothing. It's just that the filter only blocks IP addresses known to belong to spammers; and it permits registration, too, even if your IP address matches the lists, in case it's a false positive. ==Overview==

The Total War Center forums have a long and rich history, much of which can be traced back within the threads of the Curia. What follows is a summary of the major events in the site and forums history.

:Note:
Some of the former Administrators or Staff members of TWC have created accounts of their times at the site:

*Mi Lucha by Siblesz
*The Chronicles of the Prince by the Black Prince
*The History of a Society by Belisarius.

Origins
TWC was originally created by Emperor Paul Dacoste and co-founded by The Knight2100, under the name mtw.gamercastle.com, as part of the gamercastle network, that no longer exists. When GC closed down in 2003 it became the Total War Centre (note English spelling of name!) when it moved to an independent server, www.legiontotalwar.com in April 2003.

2003
Early Days
The first year of independent existence was a quiet time for the site. It remained a small cozy and largely unnoticed community. It was known for being a haven of intellectual debate, and liberal moderation, at a time when larger fansites, notably the official boards and The Org were employing increasingly harsh policies. The intellectualism of the site attracted members away from larger boards where deep and informed debates were often interrupted or hijacked by what is referred to as n00bish posting. TWC's growth was slow during this time, but saw rapid rise as new administrative staff were brought in.

The First and Second Triumvirate
As real life issues increasingly detracted from the time Paul Dacoste was able to devote to running the site, its two moderators, Juan Siblesz (aka Siblesz) and Aden Lucas (aka the Black Prince) were given admin status and tasked with reforming and rejuvenating the site. Together with Paul, they formed an administrative Triumvirate. The biggest success of their leadership was the illegal hosting of video recordings of the BBC2 and Lion TV Production "Time Commanders". This show used the engine for Rome Total War, which was unreleased at the time, to recreate historical battles that teams of ordinary people could fight in in a Total War Style. As the show was unavailable in the US, there was great demand for images and recordings of it. Several British members of TWC made these available to the admin staff, which hosted them on TWC's server, and advertised this fact around the wider community. By the end of the first season of Time Commanders, TWC was one of only 2 websites providing the content, and greatly increased its membership because of this. It brought the website to the forefront of the community, though this also resulted it attracting the wrath of Creative Assembly and threats of legal action over copyright issues.

Due to increasing conflicts in administrative style between Juan and Aden, and continuing prolonged absence of Paul, a third member was brought on board to assist in the running of the site. Leonardo Esperon (aka Boris Pavlov Grozny) was another long standing member of the community and invited to take the job as the third member of the Triumvirate. This Second Trium represents the start of a golden age at TWC where the perfect balance between community size, popularity content and moderation was established.
The Three admins divided the duties of running the site between them, with Juan dealing with website and technical issues, Aden running the forum itself, and having overall charge of moderation, and Leo arbitrating any issues between them, as well as overseeing a new concept on the site - The Curia (see elsewhere)

To summarise briefly, Leo wrote an created a Constitution for the site, known as the Syntagma, and a place called the Curia, which was to be the home of all Syntagma related issues. They also created an additional class of members known as Civitates who represented the most respected members of the site. The key idea behind the concept was that all members would be bound by the Syntagma, including the staff, and that the Civitates, through a form of democracy within the Curia, would have say over how the site was run. The first example of such input was the creation of a Signature and Avatar Policy by the Curia.
Increasing conflict arose between Leo and Aden over the exact nature and implementation of the Syntagma, with Leo eventually resigning his post citing administrative conflicts with the "bureaucratic nature" of Aden. This proved to be the first step toward the forum Civil War.
Civil War
February 2004.

The First Civil War is probably the biggest misunderstanding in the forums history. The entire event occurred because a server maintenance email was sent to Paul not to Juan, and therefore no one who was active realised the server would be temporarily down for 3 days. When Siblesz and tBP realised the server had gone down, they thought it was the end of the world. That was mistake no. 1.

Each adopted different strategies for dealing with it. Siblesz attempted to get in contact with the hosts to find out what had happened, tBP and Trobalov, with help from Siblesz speeded up negotiations with Nox. We all knew the server rent would end in April, and we didn't have the funds to renew, so we'd all been in talks with RevolutionGaming headed by Nox to provide us hosting for the Forum. While Siblesz was attempting to get in touch with the current hosts, with a mind towards at least recovering the database, tBP and Trobalov were working on the basis that the Forum could not be restored and that they would have to start from scratch. Nox set them up with a server, uploaded invision on to it, and tBP set about re-creating the forum structure.
Grimsta's Article
:-see main article: The Helios

GrimSta's Polticial Helios edition happened back in January 06. It was an article featuring an interview with Belisarius which included a large attack on Simetrical. Simetrical Posted a reply, but things soon got escalated as a group of members led by Belisarius pushed for Sim's resignation from staff and as Pro-Curator. This failed as most civs voted in support of Sim. some now believe the whole incident was started by Bel for his own ends.

Not long after this, GrimSta and Lusted posted the Silly Party thread to lighten the mood. In keeping with its title, it was a very silly thread, including the Brussel sprout assassination squad.

April Fools
:-see main article: April Fools

For April Fools in 2006 the staff decided to play a joke. The idea was to pretend a hated ex-moderator Crandar had returned and was returning to staff to deal with excessive trolling and rule breaking.

The joke involved the resignation of several staff members, staff members flaming each other (knowing it was a joke), and mass hysteria in the Curia. The joke was eventually revealed by Justinian

Passport Incident
Archer gave Ferrets54 a passport to the Curia without asking the Curia. he also introduced it as a bill and stated it was his right to add it to the Syntagma as he pleased . This was so Ferrets could argue his case for being a Civitate (after his ostrakon) with the Curia. The passport was a new invention and Archer argued that it was within his power to hand it out to special cases for a short period of time. The situation was escalated when the Black Prince proposed a bill which limited the powers of the admins. During this time Mithras came to TWC and stated he would delete the Curia (in staff) if people objected to Archer's will.

Later on Archer approached Ferrets54 on msn, and suggested that he should make Ferrets a civitate under the provision that he would cause a shock in the Curia. Ferrets played along, and Archer then promoted Ferrets54 to what appeared to be a moderating rank. However, in reality Archer had simply invented a new rank with the badge and coloured name of a moderator that had no actual powers. Regardless, this joke was taken very seriously by some members of the Curia.

The Reforms
Mithras threatens to take away staff elections, Rule number one for the Curia created: When in doubt create a New Syntagma. Civitates booted from the Curia and replaced with an uber patrician class.

Staff Rebellion
sale:-see main article: Staff Rebellion

The so called "Staff Rebellion" (or October plot) was an unsuccessful request by the Staff to try and make HorseArcher resign him form is position as Site Admin. This event took place from October 12 to October 14.

Besim Returns
:-see main article: The Besim Episode

Besim was a Network Administrator from Ogres Net the owners of the site. He is one of the most controversial figures in the sites history, taking many decisions that were unpopular such as hiding the Curia from general view and banning Professor420. This took place while the sale of the site and the identity of the buyer was in question, prompting many to question his motives.

The Sale of the Site
:-see main article: The Purchase

The period from January 16, 2007 until January 20, 2007 was a period of great turmoil at TWC. Archer has resigned a few days before and Hex were selecting a new leader. The on the 16th Richard the Lionheart was appointed Administrator of the forums by the Ogre. A series of events culminating in a full scale rebellion forced Ogre to sell the site to imb39.

2007
On January 21, 2007 imb39 bought Total War Center from Ogre of Ogre's Network, this brought to an end the disruption and troubles of TWC and the members united behind the new administration to take the site into a new era.

New Constitution
The new Syntagma or Constitution passed on March 04, 2007. It increased the ties between the Staff and Curia while leaving the Curia unable to edit any sections of the Constitution relating to these ties. The Curia gained the ability to ratify all moderating staff and elect one Hex member and the Curator. It retained the Community Medals system, Hex Committees and Curial Officers.

April Fools Day
For April Fools Day 2007 the staff decided on a Barbie theme which was created by Professor420 and Simetrical. A link to the new theme can be found here. The theme had a number of people fooled after it was announced in this thread, but soon most people had caught on to the joke.

Hader first joined TWC in March 2006. He had been playing RTW for a few years now, but had only just found TWC. He began to become involved in the world of modding at TWC about a month later, inspired mostly by Lusted's TE mod for RTW. In mid-April, he was patronised by Archer for his contributions to the Total War Community, including guides, tutorials, and overall good posting. After a few more months of modding and playing RTW, his RTW disc broke and he was unable to play or mod for nearly all the rest of 2006. HE was appointed Tribounos in early September 2006, and later, Global Tribounos in mid-March 2007. Hader is currently planning work on his own mod, Hader's Aquila Mod, with work beginning during the summer of 2007. He also works with the Roma Surrectum team and Rise of Persia team.

Hader has a number of small yet significant contributions to the Total War and Modding Community, including Tech Help Guides and an All Factions mod for RTW.

Erich von Manstein (formerly known as "Manstein16") joined Total War Center in October 2004, following the release of Rome: Total War. With the exception of a few brief reappearances, he was largely absent from the site until December 2006, following the release of Medieval 2: Total War. He has been quite active since then.

Significant Events
* In January 2007, following the buyout of TWC by imb39, Manstein was nominated for the rank of Citizen by Simetrical and was elected one week later.
* On February 28, 2007, Manstein was made a tribunos. He was ratified by the Curia a few weeks later.
* On March 19, 2007, he was voted the Fastest Rising Newb and was the runner-up in the Best Debater category for 2006.
* On April 3, 2007, he was nominated for the Patrician rank by the Black Prince and was elected one week later.
* On April 10, 2007, he was made a strategos.
* On April 11, 2007, he was made a temporary Councillor of the CdeC; he was voted in on May 27.
* On April 15, 2007 he was made Deputy Chief of Moderation.
* On May 5, 2007, he replaced Soren as Chief of Moderation.

Manstein is currently Chief of Moderation and is an active poster within the Political Mudpit and the Curia.

Criticism
Manstein's methods of moderating have been labeled by some to be "draconian", particularly after he suspended both Professor420 (later commuted by Soren) and Ferrets54 in the same two-week period. Accusations of unfairness or of unequal application of the Rules have not been a part of those allegations, however.
The Curia (14 January - 11 March)
On 14 January, 2006 Mimirswell entered the Curia and began a series of reforms to change the structure of the staff and constitution. His first post in the Prothalamos outlined an aggressive change to the Staff system that would allow non-citizens to join staff and upon retiring be citizens. Though this idea failed to gain much momentum, Mimirswell was undeterred. Proposals that Mimirswell sponsored and drafted between 13 January and March 12, 2006:

Perhaps the most important Bill that Mimirswell espoused during this time was the formation of the Consilium de Civitate. Initially proposed by Wild Bill Kelso, Mimirswell adopted the proposal after Wild Bill Kelso had grown weary of debating it. Though it took two proposals and four months, it passed. It was also during this time that he also first advocated the Medal/Award System that is used today (though it would take over a year before it was implemented).

As a result of his near ubiquitous presence within the Prothalamos, Justinian, the newly elected Republican Consul appointed Mimirswell as Pro-Curator on 13 March, 2006. A day before, after volunteering twice before, Mimirswell was chosen as Urbanis Legio of the VV.

Pro-Curator and Urbanis Legio (12 March - 18 May)
Pro-Curator
As Pro-Curator, Mimirswell took a harsh line on off-topic posting within the Curia, drawing the ire of some members of Senior Staff when he culled their "spam" posts in several threads. Mimirswell ignored such ire and gradually the Curia acclimated to the new atmosphere. No longer able to propose Bills, Mimirswell instead used his position to draft the bills of others so they would meet the constitutional criteria to enable them to vote. He created several tools still in use today by the modern Curator, such as the Compiled Curia Information; he also took the then unprecedented step of seeking feedback within the Curia on his job.

Urbanis Legio
Whilst Pro-Curator, Mimirswell was also Urbanis Legio of the VV. Focusing strongly on keeping the standards of the forum high, he spent much of his time advocating using credible sources, proper formatting of posts, and the merits of constructive criticism. He also discovered that Marduk of Babylon was plagiarizing a great deal of material, including some from fellow forum members. In staff, he focused on improving the overall efficiency of staff with ideas such as (requires Moderator's Den access):
Mimirswell was appointed Praetor on 17 May, 2006 and on 8 June, 2006 Mimirswell was ratified Curator after being selected by Archer to replace Justinian. During this time, Mimirswell primarily continued on as he had as Pro-Curator but with the inclusion of the Consilium Belli, he focused attention on improving the Total War Community. He initiated an idea for an Index for Modding threads that would eventually evolve into the Ideal Forum Structure for Modifications. Fabolous was appointed Pro-Curator during this time.

He was also tasked by the staff, in his role as Curial Liaison (and because he was a leading proponent), to explain the Staff Proposal: New Direction for the Curia which would prove to be one of the more controversial changes to the Curia. Mimirswell left the site before the proposal was fully enacted due to time constraints from work. Mimirswell resigned the rank of Curator temporarily to imb39 on 16 August, 2006 and he would serve as Curator during this period. Mimirswell returned on 15 September, 2006 but did not choose to retain the Curator position; instead, Fabolous was ratified.

Praetor
Mimirswell as Praetor was given administrative permissions over BBcode, updating it to include [del],[s],[jump],[anchor],[fieldset],[legend], and many others. He also took an interest in reorganizing and updating various Staff Policies, including (requires Moderator's Den access):
Removal of Archer as Imperator (October 12 - November 15)
(For a general overview, see Staff Rebellion)

For some time, Mimirswell had been advocating the removal of Honor&Glory from staff as well as a cessation of political infighting in Hexagon Council primarily between Belisarius and Tacticalwithdrawal. Dismayed by the lack of leadership from Archer, and his increasingly paranoid actions, Mimirswell, along with the rest of Senior Staff began a discourse on whether they should resign or seek out intervention by ON. Meanwhile, at the behest of Tacticalwithdrawal and Ogre, Mimirswell fixed a series of hacks and changes implemented by either Mithras or Besim to enable the various ON sites to update from 3.0.x to 3.6.x. The work was done primarily at Zoo Admin and then ported to the various other sites on ON.

While work was being done on the other sites, Mimirswell was demoted and accused of seeking to take over the position of Imperator by Archer. Though it is true that several had suggested it, Mimirswell had declined, citing lack of desire and lack of time. In addition, he had recently declined a possible position as Network Administrator for ON for the same reasons.
Reconcillation
After Archer sought reconciliation with staff, Mimirswell (along with others such as Tacticalwithdrawal) set about reforming TWC to operate without an Imperator (as ON had not replaced Archer) as well as without Network Administrators (both of who were MIA). To do so, he created a series of topics, advocating the dissolution of the Triumvirate, creation of a Technical Support team with the inclusion of Simetrical, as well as reforming administrator permissions to prevent major security risks. After a few weeks of the new system, Mimirswell was satisfied that the instability was past and he resigned from Staff on 15 November, 2006.

The Purchase (January 14 - 20)
(For an overview, see The Purchase)

imb39 had been inquiring to Mimirswell about whether or not he would rejoin the Hexagon Council after the incidents involving Besim. Though initially declining, Mimirswell agreed to rejoin staff on 14 January, 2007. On 16 January, 2007 Meiyogen appointed Honor&Glory as sole Administrator, quickly resulting in the firing of most of staff, including Mimirswell. Mimirswell focused his efforts primarily on establishing a new site based on the backups created by staff. During this period, Mimirswell suffered from pneumonia but still endeavored to implement the backup with Simetrical.

Recent Events
After the Purchase by imb39, Mimirswell was reinstated to Site Administrator. His current role is advisor and technical support. Recent accomplishments include the installation of the Medal/Award system as well as various template fixes for the Medieval skin and Rahl's skin. He has also undergone scrutiny by various members of the Curia, among them Professor420 and the Black Prince suggesting that he resign.

Joined in late 2004 around the time of the RTW release. Patronised by Garbarsardar on September 15, 2005 and appointed a Urbanis Legio on January 27, 2006. Elected by the Curia to the role of Quaestor on March 19, 2006. Soon became a Global Moderator (Praetor) on April 12, 2006. Bought the site on January 21, 2007 after a series of events and crises at TWC culminating in Honor&Glory being appointed Head Administrator and the removal of all other staff. Currently imb39 is simply the most awesome guy on TWC, pending official recognition.

Long and Dull
imb39 is a child of the sixties. Born in 1969, he was planted in front of the TV at the tender age of about 5 months to witness the moon landings. Needless to say, his memory of that event is somewhat hazy.

A Londoner, imb39 has spent the vast majority of his life in Britain, save two years living in Egypt. His chosen vocation, teaching, facilitated this move and has allowed him to waste inordinate amounts of time at TWC, something he joined in September 2004.

The spur for imb39 deciding upon settling at TWC was the Time Commander video section. These downloads were hosted at the time, but removed for legal reasons later. So, he joined, downloaded and forgot, or rather peeped around, finally deciding to post in the Vestigia Vetustatis sub-forums on a topic about decisive battles of World War 2. Ironically, one of the first replies was from Wilpuri, the founder of the House he was destined to join. During this period he was asked about becoming a Civitate but queried if he had the time to put into the role. It went no further…

Due to pressures at work, imb39 withdrew from the forums until January and slowly began to get involved again. Resigning from work, imb39 got more and more involved and over the summer was probably matching the legendary Ozymandias for posting rates, if not quality. Finally, in September,Garbarsardar sent a curious PM asking if he was interested in becoming a Civitate. It must be said, that as the site had become more important to him, he jumped at the chance, despite not knowing who this ‘Garbarsardar’ person was.

Over the next few months (the end of 2005) imb39 carried on as per normal. Barely noticing the Curia, he concentrated on the ‘Pit and VV subforums. He also obtained his first client, King Henry V (who was destined to become a pivotal editor of the Helios). He also began to get involved in the Curia and took part in the heated debate regarding Drakkassleron’s recent Civitateship. This was, in some ways, one of his defining Curial moments (for him, that is, many others might not have noticed). Garbarsardar also used the time to tell him about some of the recent history of the site, specifically the schism in May 2005.

At this time a few member of staff resigned from moderating duties. Imb39 felt he could spare an hour or two every evening and sent in a speculative PM offering to help. Imagine his shock when it was accepted. The shock was genuine… He became an Urbanis Legio.

A few weeks later a position as Quaestor came up. Many urged him to go for it. Displaying typical restraint (his interpretation, others would say typical lack of confidence) he declined. A few weeks later he was promoted Quaestor, in March 2006.

At the turn of April 2006 more resignations came about and imb39 was promoted to Praetor and got a seat on the Hexagon Council. He was astonished to find that within a few weeks he was being considered for admin (even if it was a cursory consideration, he is not sure) but declined. He was still getting to know the Praetor role.

The summer progressed and he spent his time helping people out, and trying to calm the Curial fires. As September came upon us, moves were started in Hex (based on some of the ideas of members of the Curia) to change the roles of Civitates and Patricians. He volunteered to take part and help get them through the Curia. It was done, partly, due to the tumult that the Curia seemed to be in most of the time.

It is fair to say that he thinks the changes were a worthwhile attempt but that they did, in the end, fail.

It was also at about this time that issues to do with the running of the site were beginning to boil over in Hex. Imb39 has, wherever possible, been a consensus person and was increasingly concerned, along with a few others, with the erratic and authoritarian direction that Hex was being dealt with. He was not alone.

In October, imb39 and the majority of Hex started to discuss ways of changing things – trying to decentralise decision making apparatus within Staff/Hex and sharing the workload (the admin at the time complained bitterly about the amount of work he had to do).

Imb39 became the first, and only, Chairman of Hex but found the role difficult to establish and not something he particularly enjoyed. He resigned in November, on the same day that Garbarsardar did. Besim rode in at that time and proceeded to wreak havoc…

imb39, distraught at the utter chaos and the total absence of leadership from the Senior Staff, contacted Besim and sought to calm the fires and explain the way the site works and the fact that it was a community as much as it was a forum. He got Hex access and immediately opened up lines of communication between the different levels of Staff. He was accepted back in Hex within a week. During this time, imb39 made his first attempt to buy the site. He contacted Ogre but was declined. It was a very useful move, though, as it provided a background for later events, none of which were expected or planned for.

Over the next couple of months, imb39 found himself getting more and more inactive. Christmas loomed and he felt it was time to leave again. The Site was more or less stable. He had helped, in his own way, to restore virtually everything that Besim had removed/changed. He was urged to go on holiday and think about it. He did.

After holidaying in Granada and pondering things, imb39 came back with renewed energy. He began to question Hex’s role within the site itself and challenged the members of hex itself. He also posted a radical thread in the Curia questioning the set up of members within the Curia.

Archer resigned. Imb39 was voted on as being his replacement. ON sacked everyone. The rest, as they say, is history…

There are a few people who have shaped his views at TWC. The key figures are, in no particular order –

Garbarsardar, Mimirswell, Wild Bill Kelso, Simetrical, Søren, Gigagaia and Professor420

He has also been a prolific patron –
King Henry V, Seneca, Sheep, Sher Khan, Mangalore, Perikles, scottishranger, Atterdag, Elrond, Ozymandias, Pannonian, Phoebus, Captain Arrrgh! and Chris_uk_83.

He is also indelibly linked to –
Dorian Gray and Ronin and Gaius Baltar.

Beginnings at TWC
Lusted is a well respected member of TWC. He joined TWc in Jan 2005, but only posted rarely in the modding sections until the release of Barbarian Invasion for RTW. Then with the release of his Late Romans mod for BI, he began to frequent TWC more and more often. The release of his Late Romans also coincided with one fot he few black spots on his records. Eager to include a Dragonarri in the v1 of the mod he included one done by Razor for the Fall of Rome mod he was also part of. Lusted did so without permission, and Razor soon found out and complained. Lusted, soon realising his error and feeling guilty voluntarily removed the download link for v1 of his mod, and he was removed from the Fall of Rome team. He and Razor have since patched up their relationship and there is no lnoger bad blood between them. This incident is also responsible for some of Lusteds protective nature regarding modders rights.

Modding Career
Lusted has a long modding career. He first started modding Rome: Total War in December 04, beginning with simple text editing before moving onto skinning. He improved his skills before joining the Fall of Rome mod for RTW in March. He later joined the Imperium TW team, and the Fourth Age Total War team, the mod that got him interested in modding in the first place. He was later removed from the Fall of Rome team(as explained above), and resigned from the other mod teams over time as more of his time was devoted to his mod Terrae Expugnandae. It was the release of his Late Romans for BI that first bought him to the attention to most members. It was not longer after that he began work on TE, then called Lusteds mod, based on his own modifications to the game and various other mods he had incorporated into it. The first version of TE was released in January 06, and was soon given its name after a suggestion by Razor after Lusted asked for suggestions for names. Terrae Expugnandae means lands to conquer.

TE went on through 5 versions to become one of the most popular RTW mods. Lusted also worked on a mod for Rome: Total War - Alexander called Alexandros. Whilst not as big as TE, it would have been his most ambitious project as a large majority of the work would have been done by him, including most of the unit models and skins. Unfortunately a major computer error resulted in the loss of all his work for Alexandros, and for TE Gold.

Lusted was elected to the rank of Opifex in July of 2006 for his 2oustanding contribtions to the TW mod community".

Lusted returned from a brief break from modding to begin work on his Lands to Conquer mod for Medieval II Total War. v2.0 of which had over 20,000 downloads.

Civitates
Lusted was first approached with an offer of Patronisation by Fabolous in December of 05 after the release of his Late Romans.

TWC Staff
Lusted was a member of TWC Staff from 16 Jan 06 - 26 Jan 07. He was appointed to the now non-existent rank of Cohores Praetoria on January 16th 2006. He was then elected to the rank of Quaestor on March 19th 2006. He took part in the staff April Fools joke not long after that. He was then appointed to Strategos on August 9th 2006, becoming the first 5th Global Moderator. After the Staff Rebellion he gained admin powers and was in charge of adding in new mod forums and removing old ones up until his resignation. He was also the Creative Assembly Liaison after the Staff Rebellion.

He resigned on 16th January 2007 due to not having enough time to devote to the rank, but after the events on 16th January(Trimuph), he joined in the efforts to resist the changes made by ON, and proceeded to get as much support of the mod community as he could. If ON had not sold TWC, Lusted had got at least 17 major mods to agree to move to the new site. He also communicated with The Creative Assembly during events.

He recently returned to staff as a moderator, making his resignation one of the shortest in TWC history.

CA connections
Lusted is unique in the connections with CA he has. Apart from emails from The Shogun and SenseiTW he received as his role as CA liasion, he also has CA Oz developers Caliban and Jason (aka Palamedes) on his msn. He has been talking to Palamedes regarding changes he made in his Lands to Conquer mod, at Palamedes instigation, in an effort to help improve M2Tw for patch 1.2.

Criticisms
Lusted has come in for various criticisms during his time on TWC. The first is talked about in the first section of the article. The 2nd was for his support of Belisarius during Grimsta's Article. He later came in for criticism for banning the popular member Ferrets54. Ferrets had claimed it was a politically motivated banning. Lusted has always claimed it was due to Ferrets excessive number of user notes and infractions, and the large number of chances he has and has messed up.

More recently Lusted came in for criticism for his actions towards a member called IHatemondays who used some of his mod work without permission. Lusted later admitted he acted too harshly, but not before the member left TWC.

He also comes in for regular criticism/attack for his support of CA. Some even think he is being paid by them but he firmly denies this.

Future at TWC
Lusted continues work on his mod LTC for M2Tw, and now he has resigned from staff has become more active in the Curia, and discussions taking place there since Imb39 bought the site.

He will likely remain an important member of TWC for a long time.
The story of jp's short but eventful time at TWC

Beginnings
After joining in February 2006 I became a regular of the Political Mudpit where I was noticed by a few members as being potential Civitate material. My mainly conservative views were shared by members such as Carach and the Black Prince, while I often debated agaisnt Shyam Popat and Ozymandias. Strangely the 2 people who influenced my first 2 months on TWC the most were Shyam and Carach, coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum. I was eventually patronised by Ummon a month after joining, I joined the ranks of the Curia just before the April Fools Joke on the members. During this period I became friendly with imb39 after he conned me into believing that Crandar really had returned (Damn him!). When Ummon left the site in May I transferred patronage to imb39 and haven't looked back.

Summer
After being a member of both the CoP and CdeC in the Summer of 2006 I asked to be entered into some moderator elections that may take place while I was on holiday. Upon returning from holiday I found I was in an election and many had thought I had left due to my inactivity. After the ensuing crisis of alleged widespread use of PM's to canvass for votes I was appointed a Moderator along with Evariste and Seleukos. With the Curia now attacking me for being appointed rather than elected I set about trying to be a good moderator, something which I hope I achieved with my 'less is more' mantra. My moderating style is laid back and Infractions are only issued very rarely, usually for personal attacks.

The Depression
Staff
October was the month of the Staff Rebellion against Archer. I knew something was up when Tac resigned. Later I found out Archer had removed him due to him supposedly reading PM's on MYSQL however I am not sure of the factuality of this. I was invited to sign a letter which called for the removal of Archer and was to be posted in staff with the signatures. It was a great letter really and argued not against Archer as a person but his lack of leadership and communication skills. The letter called for his resignation from Imperator to either Hex or Staff or the general membership. A few days later I came online to find TWC in chaos yet again. Archer had just demoted everyone and promoted HG to Hex (who saw some unfavourable things about him which had some bigger consequences for TWC down the line) along with Belisarius to Admin. Eventually after much arguing everyone got back in Staff and HG and Belisarius (who eventually returned and has since become Content Manager) left TWC. Hex became a supposed council of equals and everyone was happy (well we'll see about that later on).

The Ongoing Saga of Selling the Site
TWC was going fine, MTW2 was just out, the moderation was perfect, the debates were going well and the mods were just appearing. Then I asked General Sun if he knew TWC was up for sale (which was commonish knowledge at the time) in passing conversation. He was amazed and we soon had Evariste and Professor420 in our conversation. In my other msn window was imb39, I asked him if he was interested in our plan to buy the site and he joined the conversation 5 minutes later and offered to buy the site outright. After approaching Ogre and finding out about the pitiful zboard offer we were ecstatic, but worried at how far into the deal ON were. The long wait for Ogre to decide began and during this time Besim reappeared at TWC...

Besim
At first we thought this was good, but the longer he stayed the more he wanted to interfere in things he did not understand. For more details on Besim's reasons for meddling in TWC, destabilising the site and hindering the sale to us please see Of the Exile. Then I came on TWC one morning to find:

* A New Skin that was Pink
* Half of Hex demoted
* The Curia deleted (well removed from view)
* All Civitates and Patricians demoted

I immediately went on msn and started talking to Besim, inviting all the other staff on msn to the conversation. We hammered out some compromises such as getting the Curia back and imb39 (who had resigned the previous week), Lusted (who had been demoted) and I were given access to the Admin Control Panel to fix the ranks. However Besim did not give us the required access so it was pointless, and I just ended up reading Hex for half an hour. While reading Hex I saw a thread about future members of Hex, out of the 4 on the shortlist all but one have been on Hex. Then Professor420 was banned, I told Besim he could not just do that at TWC, it was not how we operated by threatening members and banning them. He then threatened to ban me for dissenting! This was a big mistake on his part as I was now dead set against him. I immediately added Prof's Of the Exile article to my Signature in the now infamous 'The Truth' style and encouraged others to do so. I opened a thread polling the members on what they thought of Besim (Link) however he removed the poll and added it to this thread (Link) the results are obvious to see. After some flames and trolls between various members (me included I'm sorry to say) and network administrators Besim caved in and gave control of TWC back to Hex. HG reappeared during this episode, on the side of Besim, and the plotting of the next and final crisis is said to have begun immediately after the fall of Besim...

Honor&Glory
One Tuesday in January I was visiting TWC. It was 6 weeks since Besim and my activity had declined sharply. Not only had I been rejected by the Curia in the CDC elections and by certain others, people were saying I had tried to 'destroy the site' and after Ogre said he wasn't going to sell TWC I found logging on a chore, let alone moderating or posting. I felt slightly betrayed and bitter during this time, I'd helped get rid of an 'idiot' (to put it nicely) and been snubbed by the people it had helped. Then I refeshed the main TWC Index and suddenly the Staff Forum and Curia were gone and to my utter amazement Richard the Lionheart had a bold purple name. On joinng the thread in the Suggestus I thought this was a joke, surely the most hated person on TWC was not really an admin, how wrong I was. As more facts emerged we realised this was not a joke.

The next day I logged on in the morning to see if there were any developments. I found half the forum banned and in disgust I posted something about 'HG loving Ogre' (in harsher terms). When gigagaia saw he told me to edit it out quickly as we didn't want everyone banned. So I quickly edited it and then imb39 presented me with a perfect snipe at HG, asking what his vision for the future was. You can see my reply to imb's post in the 'Quotes' section below, I was banned immediately.

New Site
On the Wednesday night it was decided a new site was to be created to rival TWC. Simetrical set this up and Lusted/imb39 began the organisation of such a move. Luckily Simetrical had made a database backup quickly before he lost his admin powers, meaning the transition would be easy. The name Total War Horde was chosen at first with an aim of buying Total War Zone and then moving to that in the not too distnat future. Lusted organised for about half the mods at TWC to leave there altogether and join our forum, while the rest were going to maintain a presence at both.

Dispair and Triumph
People were being banned and unbanned and chaos reigned over the forums. Not just the Curia and staff but all the members were in revolt. The plan for the new forum was going smoothly until we hit legality issues with the database. In another sneaky trick Spirix registered TWH.com and put a redirect to TWC there to try and confuse people in finding the new site. Things were going down hill.
With HG in charge at TWC and legality problems with using the TWC database for the new site our plans stalled. Forum life was going back to normal and this did much good for HG's cause as a stable TWC meant he had won in taking over the forum and imposing his will over it. However when Archer and Meiyogen put us on a global ignore list known as 'Coventry' they amde a big mistake. TWC began to revolt again and the spamming of the forums began as Ozymandias and I incited people to spam the forum with the link to Archer's Plot. Then people began to be IP banned and in conjunction with imb39 I was given permission to spam the link to the new forum. Using the account mafiaboss I opened 10 thread each containing the link to the new forum, they were soon deleted, but people had seen the link and soon began to spam it too. Satisfied TWC was at it's knees and knowing imb39 had an important msn meeting coming up with Ogre than night I went to bed. On waking up in the morning TWC was ours, with the chance to control and influence it's future.

The New Golden Age
Upon imb39 buying the site, it was clear this was to be the new Golden Era of TWC. So far this prediction has not been at all wrong.

Quotes
ON have given birth to a new doctrine in running a forum: 'stupidity' (In response to HG being appointed Administrator of TWC)

Offering moderating advice to someone sorely lacking in that field does not count as a rebellion. (Source) (In response to HG closing his threads on the moderating under the new regime)

Criticisms
He has received one complaint about his moderating that was upheld, details can be found here. He apologised for the incident.
Some have criticised him for being too 'spammy', a claim jp does not disagree with. However jp believes there is a time for light-heartedness and a time for seriousness, but sometimes the lines get blurred.
His first Moderating position was giving to him by is grandfather Lucius Veronus at the time of the October Plot but was only able to hold the position for 2 days resign after the situation had cooled off. He returned to staff in November where he was elected Tribounos with Vikrent, Aristrocrat and Halie Satanus. He played a semi-active role in the Honor & Glory story where he demanded to be strip of his staff position and continually attacked the new staff. == Biography of Scottishranger ==

Scottishranger is currently a moderator of the Total War Center forums. He joined the site on December 09, 2005. After receiving various advices from Halie Satanus on writing a historical articles, Scottishranger wrote "A Brief History of the Medieval Cannon", followed up shortly after by "Greek Fire, What is it?." These articles were well received by the community and the prominent historian and Helios writer/editor King Henry V. approached me about patronization. He was ratified a civitate on June 6, 2006. He was elected by the Curia to serve as a Tribounos on October 8, 2006. During the Staff Rebellion, Scottishranger remained Neutral, as he really was confused at the time and being a new member to Staff did not want to lose his new office.

Selenius4tsd joined TWC in late September of 2006, a few months before the release of Medieval 2. He began getting involved with modding in December, starting with the EHL Separation Mod which seperated the Grand Campaign into 3 campaigns, similar to Medieval 1. He was offered patronisation by vikrant in late December/early January, but due to the events going on in TWC at the time the process was delayed and he was only fully patronised later in January.

He applied for Moderator in early April and was appointed several days later.

His interviews have made several Eagle Standard editions, including interviews with Age of Darkness and Hex Khan.

Another article written during a politically-motivated ban, written by Professor420.

Diatribe of a Plebe
I probably shouldn't be posting this. I have an ungodly amount of work to do, and in part, that may have been why I had no qualms about getting myself suspended. But I cannot, in good conscious, let this debate about the future of the Curia, about the future of TWC, to go on like this. There is only one road we can go down if we want to save the Curia, there can be no question about this.

Mods, and the modders that make them, are the lifeblood of TWC. They are the bread and butter, they are responsible for drawing the members and sustaining the site and why we get support from CA. I don't think anyone would go so far as to deny this. While the Common Community is of importance, and perhaps what gives TWC its character and charm, it is the TW side in general and the modders specifically that 'pay the bills' literally and figuratively.

It is well known that modders are under-represented in the Curia. And it is equally well known that many dozens or hundreds of modders who have contributed in great amounts to the Mod community do not have more than 50 posts, perhaps are not well known on TWC, perhaps don't know about the Curia and citizenship. And it is just as well known, finally, that even if offered Patronisation, many modders would refuse it, because they have no interest in the Curia and no time for politics and forum games.

So, what are we left with? A Curia that is inherently and structurally and fundamentally slanted towards the CC, and no matter how many modders you bring in to the Curia, it will keep that slant, because modders mod, and CC'ers post. And where does this lead us? It leads us to a Curia, a so-called government, that is not representative of the life-blood of TWC. A government which inherently discriminates against the members who form the foundation for the site. And what power should they have to decide forum policy and rules and governing for members who refuse to, or cannot, participate in the Curia? What power do they have?

None. The Curia is irrelevant to Mod decisions. Constitutional or not, Staff will never, ever, submit a proposal to the Curia if the proposer does not want it to be. It will never, ever, allow the Curia to do something which could threaten modders. It will not allow the Curia to make any decisions which have effect outside of the Curia or the CC, unless they are superficial issues such as Reputation.

You can attempt to patronize all the modders you want. You can keep lowering the requirements. You can do whatever you'd like, but at the end of the day, if there are ANY inhibitions or obstacles for a modder representing themselves and voting, they will choose modding over it. This cannot be changed, nor should it. And what also will not change, then, is the Curia's inability to effect anything outside of the CC or Capitol.

The 'important' projects and achievements on this site are TW projects, without question. What is the last 'important' CC proposal? What is there on the level of the Registry, Unit Repository, even the Wiki was a TW idea. Their involvement with the Curia was only a formality; they would have happened with or without Curial approval. The same holds true for things such as the Tribunal; ultimately if what the Curia does is unpopular, or even felt unpopular by Hex, it WILL be overridden, it will be vetoed, it will be changed. Hex is in the business of keeping order; this means giving both Curial cookies and making sure the crumbs don't get into the actual site.

And I find myself in a conundrum. On the one hand, the Curia is a joke. It is ruled by vulture lawyers who either want to turn it into their private boy's club, or turn it into some sort of exclusive boy's parliament. These are the vocal ones, the ones who will never win, because it is the Staff who have control at the end of the day, and the silent members trust staff to do what they think is right, whether or not they believe TWC is a democracy or should be. They just, frankly, don't care.

On the other hand, the Curia is solely responsible for the amazing number of amazing admins and staff we have had, with few exceptions (which I could probably name on one hand, in how many years? Not bad). It has provided ALL staff since its inception, and we find TWC in a stronger state than its ever been. The Curia has proved a wildly successful tool for raising new members.

So why not let everyone into the Curia? We have far more than 'democracy' at stake, we have the future of the Curia and the closely-tied future of TWC. There WILL come a day, mark my words, when the Curia finds itself, picking its ass crack, wondering how the hell it wound up back where it had been in August, in October, in December, in January. When it sits in its armchair singing the tune to "All in the Family," wondering where things went wrong. The Curia will be stagnant, and useless, and not respected, and not handed any responsibility because how long will it be until Staff's patience with dealing with the Curia for the handouts it gives wears thin? And then someone will come along and say, "The reason the Curia isn't respected is because Staff has no reason to respect it!" And then someone will come along, and say, "the reason the Curia isn't respected is because our badges aren't big enough!" And then staff will give the Curia bigger badges, and things will be right for another couple months.

You can end it all now, quite easily, in fact. You can ensure the Curia's relevancy, you can ENSURE a popular mandate for the Curia that not even the most anti-Curial admins can deny. You can ensure that the Curia will be allowed to get what it wants because it is, uninhibited, the will of the people, not the will of a filtered ruling and non-representative class.

Again, why not? Because they won't read the discussions about the votes? Only someone who has spent less than a week as a citizen would think that any sizeable fraction of citizens read the discussions. I once tried to propose that people must demonstrate they've read the discussion, and this was shot down. Public voting was shot down. Every semblence of 'responsible' voting has been dismissed. It is unequivocally impossible to use uniformed voting as a reason to disqualify from voting.

How about that its unlikely most modders will ever make use of their rights? To that I say, who cares! So, they don't vote, what difference does it make? They HAVE the right to vote, they can become involved and have a voice without jumping through hoops. This isn't about increasing activity in the Curia, this is about rewiring the Curia from the insides, from a Curia of careful preservation of values and democratic ideals, to a Curia that will no longer be marginalized, that has relevancy and importance to and from and in the lifeblood of TWC.

And what about cheaters? I had three double accounts. I could have voted with them all. Oh well. I guess that's part of the baggage that comes along; democracy is far from perfect and is very scary. But do you really think the number of cheats will outweight the number of newly enfranchised members?

Before you fall back on your usual responses, I ask you to turn this over in your head some, as Aristocrat has done, as Tac has done, as WBK has done, as anyone I've approached directly has done. Because not only does it make sense, there's no other logical conclusion or outcome or solution. Already we find the great optimism of February is wearing off, and we find a Curia, apart from a few Committees and proposals kindly and voluntarily submitted to the Curia for ratification (Symposium and Wiki council, Registry and Unit Repository decisions), that is just as, if not more so, involved with naval gazing than before the reforms, and before the reforms before that, and before the reforms before the reforms before those reforms.

So what is it? Is the Curia an RPG for those citizens who have graduated from the Thema Devia? Or is it a government? The split is clear, the results of each are clear, and the route to each is clear, singular, and not overlapping.
Perikleshttps://wiki.twcenter.net/index.php?title=Perikles&diff=6099Perikles2007-05-29T19:09:14Z
Perikles:

* Half of Hex demoted

* Half of Hex demoted

New Site
