Byzantine Players are lucky in the aspect that they have heavy infantry available to them early on and for a cheap price. Byzantine Infantry are also recruitable at cities, allowing you to focus on both your military and your economy. Byzantine Infantry are a decent heavy infantry unit, though will not stand up to the most elite infantry  units. They are cheap though, and do have mail armour, thus allowing them some protection against missiles. They can easily dispatch all light infantry and light cavalry, though will struggle against heavy cavalry. This unit should make up the bulk of your army in the middle-game. Overall, a unit, which is extremely cost-efficient.
