Guns are the final argument in war.
Gun batteries improve the defences of a castle by emplacing large numbers of artillery pieces in critical locations with good fields of fire. Any enemy foolish enough to mount a direct assault must cross a killing field bombarded from several directions by grape, shot and shell.

When you're faced with a Castle that is equipped with Gun Batteries and you have no Artillery or Naval support, the best alternative is to lay siege and force the defenders to sally out or surrender as going up against a hail of bullets and explosive shells will invariably result in a Pyrrhic Victory or a Crushing Defeat. As the defender, any assault that is undertaken without artillery support will almost always turn up as a Heroic Victory.
