Suppiluliuma is one of the Hittite playable factions and faction leaders in Total War Pharaoh.

Overview

Suppiluliuma is the Hittite Great King. His faction roster includes decent swordsmen, axemen and well-armoured spearmen, as well as two-handed spearmen and axemen, javelin-men and spear chariots. In his home province, the native units include Hittite slingers and archers (he has no slingers or archers in his faction roster), axemen, spear chariots and very well-armoured spearmen.

At the start of the campaign, Suppiluliuma has three regions in Hattusa province in northern central Anatolia.

While it would be desirable to take the remaining region and have control of the whole starting province, Suppiluliuma does not start the campaign at war with the owner of the remaining province. Instead, he begins at war with the Kaska, a migratory faction of raiders, so your first task is likely to be to destroy the raiders before deciding where to send your armies next.

Strategies for Suppiluliuma

Suppiluliuma is almost surrounded by hostile kingdoms

The remaining region of your starting province, Arinna, can provide gold. Sapinuwa, the faction which controls this region at the start of the campaign, has four regions - so you will need to be prepared for a war with a similar-sized kingdom.

The only friendly nation bordering Hattusa province is Tuwana, your vassal to the south. However, it is possible to trade with the unfriendly kingdoms. You can trade wood for bronze with Tuwana, and a supply of bronze will be needed for the upkeep of higher tier units.

After defeating the Kaska raiders at the start of the campaign, and before attacking the faction which owns Arinna to the north, you may be able to take over one of the nearby kingdoms, to improve your supply of resources. For example, you could take over Purushanda, the kingdom directly to the west of Tuwana. Purushanda starts with only two regions, so it is smaller than most of the kingdoms which have a border with your home province.

As he starts the campaign surrounded by potential enemies, and because he is likely to face invasions by raiding factions quite soon, Suppiluliuma may need to fight defensively at times. Putting units in a fort reduces their upkeep by 50%, and these units will reinforce the settlement in their region if is attacked - however, an invader might besiege the fort and destroy its garrison before attacking the city.

Some raiders can be difficult to eliminate, because they retreat further than your army can travel, when you attack them. You have several ways to deal with this. When your generals level up, you can choose the skill which gives them faster movement. If you build a waystation in an outpost, your armies can march to its location to re-supply, giving them faster movement on the campaign map for several turns - however, enemy raiders may simply raze your waystations. Another option is to build a watchtower in an outpost. As well as providing thre extra garrison units for the settlement in its region, a watchtower increases the chance of your ambushes to succeed. An invader could easily destroy the outpost, however you could put an army in ambush stance near an outpost and use the outpost as bait, to lure the enemy into your ambush. Another way for Suppiluliuma to deal with raiding armies is to use the Peace Principle commandment - you can only use this if you control all regions in the province, but it provides a boost to the movement of your armies (+20%) and reduces the movement of enemy armies (-30%), so this could make it much easier to prevent raiding armies from escaping your forces.

Legacies

As a Hittite kingdom, you can choose from the legacy of Tudahya the Overseer (generals become princes and manage vassals), and Muwatalli the Benevolent (vassals provide more resources). You begin with one vassal to your south, and as the Hittite Great King, you are in a relatively good position to be able to acquire more vassal kingdoms.
