Byzantine infantry unit equipped with sword, shield and mail armour.
Overview
Made up of soldiers recruited with small 'pronoiai', land grants, these Infantry "made up of peoples from all lands", fight for the Byzantine Empire more for profit than any sense of loyalty. These soldiers are equipped with a sword and large shield and wear mail armour for protection.
Details
The Byzantine Empire is fortunate in the aspect that they have heavy infantry available to them early on and for a cheap price. Byzantine Infantry are also recruitable at cities, allowing you to focus on both your military and your economy while still having access to these units. Byzantine Infantry are a decent heavy infantry unit, though will not stand up to the most elite infantry units, especially later in the game. They are cheap though, and do have mail armour, thus allowing them some protection against missiles. They can easily dispatch almost all light infantry and light cavalry, though will struggle against heavy cavalry. This unit should make up the bulk of your army in the middle-game. Overall, a unit, which is extremely cost-efficient.
