Gallic Culture.png
Name: Gallic Tribes
From Game: Total War: Rome II
Cultural Group: Barbarian
Playable Factions: Yes

Overview:

“The Gauls... They would rather lie slain in battle than lose the freedom gained by their forefathers.”

Culture Traits

  • Gallic Horsemanship: +20% melee attack for all cavalry
  • Warrior Society: +2 public order for every war against a neighbouring faction

Factions:

Arverni

  • Gallic Craftsmanship: +20% wealth from all industrial buildings
  • Tribal Hegemonists: Moderate diplomatic bonus with all barbarian tribes (cultural affinity)

Boii

  • Conquerors: +15% morale during battles in neutral or enemy territory
  • Migratory Urges: -75% building conversion costs

Galatia

  • Gallo-Graeci: Moderate diplomatic bonus with all Hellenic factions (cultural affinity)
  • Plunderers: +100% income from raiding and sacking

Nervii

  • Ambushers: +50% chance of successfully launching an ambush
  • National Courage: +20% melee attack for all units during battles in own or allied territory

In game:

  • Culture Traits make Gallic cavalry more deadly in melee combat, and increase public order when at war with neighbouring factions.
  • With the exception of Galatia, start off in areas of northern Europe, with multiple Gallic, Germanic and Celtic Tribes nearby. This proximity to other Gallic factions makes Confederation a powerful tool in the early game, allowing the expansion of both your land and military through diplomatic means... if you can persuade them to join you.
  • Roster is a mixture of cheap levy units with low morale, and more experienced warriors and chosen, alongside strong melee cavalry. Of particular note are the Oathsworn, a powerful unit of very heavy infantry initially available as a General's Bodyguard to all Gauls except Galatia. These swordsmen are heavily armed and armoured, and can take on even Rome's late game Legionaries.
  • The Gallic Tribes are a solid choice for players looking to play a Barbarian faction, but without needing to learn a more specialised playstyle that some cultures (such as Germanic or Balkan Tribes) require. As such, many of the standard Total War tactics such as Hammer & Anvil still work well with them.

In history:

  • The heirs to Brennus, they sacked Rome once and maybe could do so again.
  • Although the Gauls are believed to have originated in the lands north of the Alps in the 5th Century BC, they would go on to spread across much of Northern Europe and could be found as far afield as the Anatolia region of modern day Turkey.
  • Although they are often portrayed as savage barbarians, the Gauls were in fact technologically sophisticated in some areas, for example developing the chain mail armour which Rome would later adopt as the lorica hamata.
