Janissary archers shower the enemy with arrows, weakening and breaking formations before the infantry move in.
Overview
Janissaries, 'Yeni ceri' , meaning new soldier in Greek are recruited by a levy of Christian boys within the empire. Drafted while young, these soldiers form a large part of the Turkish army and pledge loyalty to the Sultan. Janissaries are expert archers equipped with powerful bows. They usually wear some armour underneath their robes.
Details
Janissary are highly trained archers, which, if used right, can inflict a high number of casualties upon the enemy. Like all archer units, Janissary Archers are able to set alight their missiles, enabling them to launch a volley of flaming arrows at the enemy. Janissary Archers are able to be recruited from cities, meaning you do not sacrifice coin for military power. Janissary Archers have the stake ability, enabling them to deploy a row of stakes in front of them, warding of any cavalry charges. This can dramatically increase the number of volleys they can get into the enemy lines before needing to be withdrawn, as cavalry is no longer a threat. While Janissary Archers can be a deadly threat against enemy infantry, they may lose out to more well armoured missile units, as their robes offer little protection compared to metal plate.
