Overview

Rome: Total War has a total of 5 Characters. Each character has it's own set of skills and abilities.

Family Member

Family Members are the most important character for every faction as they can Command Armies or Govern Settlements throughout the land.

  • Command

This attribute determines the character's ability to lead an army in battle. A family member can start off with between 0-2 stars in command and can earn more by fighting and winning battles. An army without a general is more likely to rout in battle than an army that is led by a family member, even if he has 0 command.

Command Effects Description
0 "Leadership" is just a long word to this man, like "Inspiration". He possess neither.
1 Command ability is, at best, a yawning gap in this man's personality.
2 This man knows how to shout orders, but these are often neither timely nor relevant.
3 This man lacks a real aura of command, but makes up for it with a good loud voice and a small talent for instilling fear.
4 This man has a basic talent for command, although he sometimes lacks confidence.

  • Management

This attribute determines the character's ability to govern a province. Higher management increases income and public order in the assigned settlement.

Management Effects Description
0 An under-achieving oyster would show more signs of being able to manage the day-to-day affairs of an empire.
1 This man should not be entrusted with running a shrimp stall, let alone anything important.
2 Administration is not this man's forte. He can manage simple matters, but without skill.
3
4 This man's limited administrative talent produces results that are adequate but far from inspired.
5
6 More often than not this man solves administrative problems but some crises leave him floundering.
7
8 This man is a whirlwind of efficiency, cutting through the red tape at every turn.
9 This man shapes the business of state to his will, and gets any task done despite any challenge.
10
  • Loyalty

This attribute is very important as it gauges the character's willingness to serve and follow your faction and determines the success rate of an enemy attempt at bribery. All family members start off with a loyalty rating of 4 which can either increase or decrease depending on several factors such as traits, retainers, religion, and events. A family member with less than 4 loyalty is considered a dangerous liability that will either rebel against you or gladly join another faction for a lump sum of gold.

Loyalty Effects Description
0
1
2 This man proclaims his loyalty to his friends and 'the cause', often just a little bit too loudly.
3 While he occasionally acts in a dubious fashion, few really doubt that this man is loyal to his people.
4 This man is known to be a loyal and dependable sort, one who can be relied on to do the right thing for his friends.
5 Disloyalty to anyone is not something that this man contemplates except, perhaps, in his very darkest moments.
6 Loyalty. Loyalty. Loyalty. Words to live by, every day.
7 Friends and loved ones are always causes to be supported, as far as this man is concerned.
8 This man is seen as solidly loyal to his comrades-in-arms, no matter what may come to pass.

10
  • Influence
Influence Effects Description
0 A stuffed olive has more importance than this man - it could choke someone important and change history.
1 This man has almost no influence over his dinner menu at home, let alone his life and the fate of the world.
2 This man's opinions carry little weight. He is simply regarded as something of a duffer.
3 This man is of scant importance. He occasionally says sensible things, but the occasions are few.
4 Sometimes this man's counsel carries weight, and his opinion is sought on carefully selected matters.
5 This man's word carries weight in the lesser palaces of the world, although the truly mighty largely ignore him.
6 More often than not this man's counsel is listened to with respect even if it does not always carry the day.
7 This man's good qualities make him someone who can tip the balance of many arguments.
8 This man carries enormous political weight, and his words sway the opinions of most lesser men.
9
10 When this man speaks, his words carry the wisdom of the Gods to his listeners.

Diplomat

  • Influence

Spy

  • Subterfuge

Assassin

  • Subterfuge

This attribute determines the Assassin's success rate at sabotaging buildings and killing characters. Preying on enemy armies that are leaderless is a safe and easy way for an Assassin to gain experience as it is almost impossible for an inexperienced Assassin to touch an enemy General or even a Diplomat.
