    Description

Buried in the earth, and surrounded by death.

A modern star fort does not look all that intimidating to civilian eyes, but on closer inspection its firepower is enough to induce fear and a healthy respect for authority. Given such a concrete example of government power, the people of a province with one are right to feel more than a little repressed. A star fort also acts as a recruiting centre for the army.

Star forts were a European design intended to counter increasingly powerful siege artillery. Seen from above, they really are star-shaped. Essentially, the design was a fortress was sunk into the ground, presenting a low silhouette, with a surrounding glacis, or slope, to deflect shots over the top of the fortifications. The slope might seem an easy approach for attacking infantry, but a ring of projecting points allowed the defenders to fire along the length of the walls. Any defenders who reached the top of the glacis then had to cross a deep dry moat, all the while under heavy fire. A star fort was intended as a killing ground, pure and simple.
