Very heavily armoured and equipped with a lance and mace, although somewhat outdated they are still formidable troops.
Overview
The Kataphractoi trace their origins back to Roman times and are recruited from amongst the middle classes, providing the Byzantine army with a force of well trained and disciplined cavalry units. Exceptionally well protected and riding armoured horses, they are unworried by the arrows of their opponents. Although slightly old fashioned, with their lances and maces they are still formidable fighters on the battlefield.
Details
Anyone who has played Rome: Total War will remember the Kataphractoi quite well as the elite cavalry available to Parthia. In M2TW though, Kataphractoi are a unique unit available to the Byzantine Empire. They are well armoured and have high attack and charge stats. Though a tad inferior to the Latinkon, Kataphractoi do have armour piercing maces as well as an armoured horse, though it can prove a disadvantage when attempting to catch fleeing cavalry units as the armour slows down the horse as well as reduces its stamina. The Kataphractoi are superior in dealing with heavily armoured troops but should not be used to fight cavalry as per the reason above. Like all cavalry units, the Kataphractoi should keep away from spears at all cost.
