Guideline for use: don't. Avoid protection wherever possible. The strength of wikis lies in the ability for anyone at all to easily make changes. If a page is being heavily vandalized, temporary semiprotection (protection from unregistered users) may be in order, but on small wikis there's probably no good reason for anything to be fully protected under normal circumstances, and probably the only thing that should be semiprotected is the Main Page.
