Land Battles in Napoleon
As in previous games of the series, land battles are one the most important parts of NTW, it is where the ability of the player to actively lead his forces on battle is tested.
General Information
When two (or more) armies engage in combat on the campaign map, the player has the option to fight the battle on the battle map. If he chooses to do so, he is "transported" into the battle and is given complete control of his forces (organized in regiments of Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery as it would be explained below).
The land battles on Napoleon Total War, like the naval battles, are fought in real time. They can be divided into two categories: Normal Land battles and Sieges. Normal Land battles are fought when 2 or more rival armies have engaged in combat on the campaign map. The player enter the battle map at the deployment stage, were he must choose the starting positions of his/her units inside his starting area. Each army consists of 20 regiments maximum, the number of men in each regiment varies according to what options the player has chosen. The player may be able to see his enemy's starting position only if he/she has a general with a greater amount of command. When the battle begins, the player has complete control of his/her units and is able to issue a variety of command to the different units, like, for example, order the men to form a square in order to defend against cavalry or order the cannons to limber/unlimber. When all enemy units are killed or routing, the player is victorious. If there is a time limit, the attacker must manage to rout or kill the defenders units before the time runs out or he will lose the battle.
Sieges are played in a very similar way, but here the target is to capture the enemy fort or defend it if you are the defender. Unlike in previous title, siege equipment is not necessary as the men can climb on the wall of the fort with ropes. That doesn't mean the cannons are useless in sieges from the side of the attacker. The fort's walls are equipped with cannons that the units can arm and use against the invaders. If the attacker can rout all enemy units or hold the center of the fort for 2 minutes, he wins the battle.
Different Unit Classes
There are 3 different unit classes in Napoleon's Land Battles commanded by a General or Captain.
Generals and Captains
Armies are usually leaded by Generals. If there is no general in the army, a captain will be selected form the soldiers as the head of the army. Generals can increase the moral of then nearby troops or give them a temporary bonus in combat. According to the Generals skill and traits, the units will fight for a longer time before they break and rout. Some of these generals are historic like Napoleon, Duke of Wellington. But be vigilant because if your general Routes or Dies during battle, it will almost blow a devastating blow against your troops morale, especially when your troops are engaged in battle. The General can use the Rally Ability which allows him to give a morale boost to the troops within his radius, and even stop some units from routing if their morale isn't shattered. They also have the ability to Inspire units, though you can only use the the inspire ability once before waiting for it to cool down, the unit who received the Inspire will get a boost in their morale and make them fight on for a long period before they route.
Infantry
Infantry is the most common unit of Napoleon's Battles. It's type and rank can vary: from local militia, Skirmishers, Line Infantry, Elite Infantry. They are used to hold their lines and harass the enemy with their musket fire, while protecting weaker units like artillery. These Units are the core to any army in Napoleon Total War, and these are is the rundown of these Units:
Skirmishers and Line Infantry. Skirmishers harasses the enemy from a distance because of they're superior range. But, Skirmishers are always in a large group where everyone's in spread out, to minimize casualties taken, this being said, Skirmishers are very vulnerable to cavalry, the reason why is because they cannot go into square formation, and infantry, Elite, line, Militia or Skirmishers, are weak against cavalry, unless they have the square formation option, which would make them extremely deadly to cavalry, but Skirmishers don't so they are extremely vulnerable to cavalry charges. They're not as bad when put up against artillery since they're spread out, but still take casualties from artillery.
Line Infantry is the Basic infantry that you would get, they are the units that are who aren't Elite, nor are they as weak as Militia, so they're right in the middle, and they're affordable to recruit. Line infantry are good against other units like cavalry since they can get into square formation, so they would decimate the attacking cavalry by using that tactic, but they are vulnerable to other forms of infantry because the square formations weakness. they're on the other hand, extremely vulnerable to artillery units, because of there tight formations, artillery will just have to hit one spot to inflict a great deal of damage.
Militia are great town watchmen, what this means is if your playing a campaign, and you need one of your provinces will revolt if you move your troops out of the town, militia come as a great option then since they are extremely cheap, and will garrison your province for you while all your experienced troops can move out. there are to other types of militia you have, you have armed citizenry who are automatically added to your army if your province is being attacked and your army isn't at full capacity, depending on how large you Main building in the city is what decides how many armed citizenry units you have, but if you have a full army, then no armed citizenry will be in the battle since there is no spot open. armed citizenry are easier to route then recruited Militia because they have worse range, and even worse morale. the other type of militia you can have is sword units. sword units are only able to be recruited by the Ottoman Empire. they only have swords and have terrible morale, if they were up against an experienced unit of line infantry, then they would lose pretty badly since they have terrible morale. all Militia units cannot use the square formation so they are a huge target from enemy cavalry and it is a much better idea not to use any Militia units in battle since they're pretty useless against anything else then Militia.
Elite Infantry are different because these types of infantry are the Elite of the Elite, an Example of Elite infantry would be Frances Old Guard. all Elite infantry types can use the Square formation, and are extremely effective against any other infantry type, though these units are really expensive, they are a huge threat to anyone who oppose them.
Cavalry
Cavalry, having low numbers and being vulnerable to musket fire and cannons, are used to flank the enemy. If used at right moment, they can turn the tide of the battle with their powerful charges and make the entire enemy army start routing.
Artillery
Cannons are used to bombard the enemy formations at range. There shots not only kill enemy soldiers but they also have a serious impact on morale. Different kinds of ammunition can be used with round shot being the default. There are also various types of artillery like howitzers, mortars and rockets.
Reinforcements
Occasionally, on the campaign map, when an army engages an enemy, a second army that belongs to the same faction may be close. If so, they will enter the battle as reinforcements. Reinforcements armies on Napoleon cannot be put under AI control and will enter the battle when there is enough space for them as the player cannot command more than 20 units during every battle.
