Overview

In Medieval II: Total War buildings are used for the recruitment of military units and also subterfuge and religious agents. They also have a range of effects, either on a faction’s economy or on the units and agents they produce. See each chain for details of how it can be used:-

Fortifications

Core Building

Core buildings are the most essential part of settlement's defense which severely affects the progress of settlement in numerous ways. These core buildings can be upgraded when a certain amount of population is reached, in its particular level, after which the player gets an option to upgrade its settlements. This greatly affects the gameplay as with superior settlements a player can totally dominate his medieval world. These upgrade defenses include: upgraded city gates, extra wall defenses. In addition they provide free upkeep unit slots, public order bonus & additional recruitment slots. They also enable the training of certain units.

Core buildings differ according to your settlement type, which either could be, castle type or city type. Every settlement starts with the first basic level called 'village' & from here on a player can choose in which way he wants to develop it.

Improved Towers

When a settlement is upgraded with walls, it's protected by towers at regular intervals across the wall from which the defenders can fire arrows on the assaulting army. In time these towers can be upgraded both in castles and cities to increase your settlements' defence.

Stables Chain

Almost all cavalry units can be recruited from this chain of buildings. Stables chain is only available in castles not cities.

Barracks Chain

Infantry units that use melee weapons & cannot perform ranged attack can be recruited from this chain type. The unit availability varies according to the settlement type, Castle or City. Castles can provide more hardy & professional troops while cities generally provide militia for its defence.

Ranges Chain

All bow-armed units can be recruited from this chain of buildings. Those buildings higher up the chain enable the recruitment of skilled archers which are superior to their predecessors both in melee and archery skill. This chain type is only available in castles not cities.

Military Academy Chain

Available only in cities, it provides some special units to specific catholic factions who help in guarding its defenses without relying on professional troops from castles.

Siege Chain

This chain of buildings enables the manufacturing of powerful siege weapons and training of its crew. Siege equipment can both be used in field battles against enemy troops & for annihilating settlements' walls and towers. Siege chain is available both in castles and cities.

Cannon Chain

This chain of buildings enables the manufacturing of powerful cannons and training of its crew. Cannons equipment or artillery can both be used in field battles against enemy troops & for annihilating settlements' walls and towers with ease. Cannon chain is available both in castles and cities.

Smith Chain

This chain of buildings either improves the armour of certain locally-recruited units or units residing there. The higher the level of building, the greater the type of armour available for units.

Port Chain

This chain of buildings enables the recruitment of ships. Those buildings higher up the chain facilitate in increased trade income, availability of superior ships & fleet capable enough to cross the Atlantic. Port chain is available in both castles and cities which are adjacent to sea.

Sea Trade Chain

Available only in cities which are adjacent to sea, this chain facilitates in increasing trade income & availability of trade fleet.

Admiralty Chain

Available only in cities which are adjacent to sea, this chain provides experience bonus for cannon ships & availability of cheaper navy.

Trade Chain

Available only in cities, this chain of buildings enables the recruitment of merchants & increase in tradeable goods. Higher levels provide more trade bonus and recruitment of additional merchants for that faction.

This chain helps in making roads that helps in increased movement of characters and army. It also provides trade bonus.

Farming Chain

This chain of buildings provides food and is the principle source of income for your faction. This also boosts population due to availability of food.

Mining Chain

Available both in cities and castles which are located in regions that contains resources which can be mined. Mining helps in exploitation of local resources which in turn improves the settlements' wealth considerably.

Sanitation Chain

Available only in cities governed by Byzantium. Sanitation provides a public health bonus and population growth bonus.

Available only in cities governed by middle eastern factions. Bimaristans provides a public health bonus and reduction bonus in retraining costs.

This chain type is only available in cities and will increase the effectiveness of your gunpowder troops and siege artillery.

Churches Chain

This chains vary on the type of religion, which could either be catholic or orthodox. And their subsequent levels vary differently in castles and cities. It enables the recruitment of priests and bishops & also offers public order & religion conversion bonus which helps in keeping the religious unrest in check.

Mosques Chain

This chain vary differently in castles and cities. It enables the recruitment of Imams & also offers public order & religion conversion bonus which helps in keeping the religious unrest in check.

Infrastructure Chain

This chain of buildings increases the movement speed and rate of replenishment of armies in its province. It also increases the line of sight of your agents and their chances of detecting hidden enemy agents.
