  • Overview

Originating from Wales, a longbow using a ‘bodkin’ arrow, a hard chiseled tip shaped like an elongated pyramid, can pierce all but the best armor. As the longbow is difficult to master, longbowmen begin training at a young age. Being susceptible to cavalry, they can plant sharpened stakes in front of their position to help keep enemies at bay.

    Details

Longbowmen are a significant improvement over Peasant Archers and are the first of a series of more “professional” archers in English armies. These units’ purpose is primarily to thin the enemy ranks with their long range and accurate armor-piercing arrows.

Longbowmen also have formidable defensive capabilities. For one, they can plant wooden stakes into the ground before a battle. These stakes require strategic placement since they stop and kill any cavalry – friend or foe – that run against them, as well as to a much lesser extent disrupt infantry charges. Also, due to a higher melee attack and defense compared to Peasant Archers, Longbowmen can be used, in dire circumstances, to briefly fight hand-to-hand against infantry.
