Warhammer 40,000, also called Warhammer 40K, or WH40K, is one of the non-Total-War games that is popular among Total War players. It is one of only 3 specific non-Total-War games that has a subforum that is dedicated to it. It is called "40,000" becuz its mythos takes place in the year 40,000 CE.

Warhammer 40,000 is a table-top game in which meny figurines are arranged upon a flat surface by multiple players, and then the players use their teams of figurines to go to war with the other side or sides. There is no grid, but rather, the players measure distances of movement and weapon-range via tape-measures. The figurines must be arranged into small groups, which are called units, and each unit must move in a cohesive manner.

Warhammer's figurines are categorized into various factions.
A player's figurines must belong to the same faction.
The factions include, but are not limited to,
The Imperium of Man, the chaos space marines, the eldar AKA aeldari, and the orks AKA greenskins.

Some factions, and particularly the eldar/aeldari and the orks, are divided into sub-factions.
The eldar are divided into 11 types, each of which comes from a different "craftworld".
The orks are divided into 6 major clans and 8 minor clans.
Those different craftworld-types and clans are distinguished by their own distinctive
warrior-types, vehicle-types, color-schemes, and insignia.

Relation to Total War games

Unlike any other non-Total-War games, Warhammer 40K is tangentially related to Total War. That is becuz there are other branches of Warhammer other than Warhammer 40K, although 40K is by-far the biggest and most popular branch. One of the other branches of Warhammer is called "Warhammer Fantasy Battles". Warhammer Fantasy Battles is the basis of three Warhammer-themed Total War games. Warhammer Fantasy Battles contains various elements in common with Warhammer 40K.
