A siege is a military blockade of a settlement with the intent of conquering by attrition or assault.
A siege occurs when an attacker encounters a settlement that cannot be easily taken by a swift attack and refuses to surrender. In anticipation of the event that such a settlement is heavily fortified and surrounded by high walls, special tactics known as siege tactics have been developed for use by the attacker, namely the construction of siege machines such as battering rams or siege towers.
