Welcome to Total War Saga: Troy on the TWC Wiki
Overview
Total War Saga: Troy has the same structure of real-time battles and a turn-based campaign as the major releases in the Total War Series but is concentrated around one critical flashpoint in history. Troy is set in the late Bronze Age, making it the earliest setting for any Total War release.
The game was released on 13th August 2020. It was given away free for downloads in the first 24 hours and is exclusively available via the Epic Game Store for the first year. CA's reasons for opting for the exclusive deal are explained in this blog.
At release, the game offered the opportunity to play as one of eight heroes, rulers or princes of kingdoms of Troy or Mycenaean Greece. The game includes a multi-resource economy with bartering for resources through diplomacy. CA's Maya Georgieva explains how legends influenced the game design in Myths, Monsters and Meaning: The Truth Behind the Myth.
General Information
The game is based both on mythological sources such as Homer's Iliad and on archaeological and historical data.
Campaign Map
The campaign map was described as "absolutely stunning" by T.J. Hafer in A Total War Saga: Troy Review. The map provides incentives to expand, as the more regions you control, the more of the five tradeable resources (food, wood, stone, bronze and gold) you have. Capturing certain regions is also a way to recruit mythical units such as harpies and centaurs, which are represented as exceptional human warriors rather than beasts (Maya Georgieva, 5 Tips to get you started in A Total War Saga: TROY, Red Bull).
Playable Factions
- Achilles - a living legend whose passionate emotions affect his nation, with fast, maneuverable and versatile armies
- Agamemnon - who appoints heroes to positions at court, with heavy armoured infantry, capable skirmishers and strong chariots
- Menelaus - who can recruit units from allies as well as his own heavy armoured infantry and effective slingers
- Odysseus - whose spies can build safe havens in enemy cities and whose armies includes stealthy, fast units
- Aeneas - who can undertake missions for the gods and whose cheap, light units weaken the enemy before his heavy units engage
- Hector - who competes with Paris for King Priam's favour and whose heavy, well-armoured units are ideal for frontal attacks
- Paris - who competes with Hector for King Priam's favour and whose armies have excellent archers and defensive infantry
- Sarpedon - whose kingdom benefits from precious resources and whose armies include fast, light units with chariots for flank attacks
Reviews and Media
Reviews approved of aspects of the game. T.J. Hafer in IGN praised the distinctiveness of the epic heroes and the stunning campaign map design, Maxim Klose-Ivanov in Cultured Vultures liked the vivid Bronze Age art style and Fraser Brown in PC Gamer said that the game offers a "complex" conflict with some "brilliant" ideas.
Reviews also identified shortcomings in the release version. T.J. Hafer in IGN said that units occasionally get stuck on battlefield terrain, Jason Rodriguez in PC Invasion observed that the diplomacy system can be exploited to obtain extra resources and Marcello Perricone in Game Watcher felt the upgrades for heroes and implementation of duels were lacklustre.
