This information was readily available online when the game was released and results in a clean GUI without any of the pope related tabs. I tried to assassinate the pope like 10 times, by reloading again and again when the target was missed. The chance to kill him was 56 % so I was like, is the pope unkillable? Anyone?

If you don't like inquisitors, the papal states can be safely removed from the game. This information was readily available online when the game was released and results in a clean GUI without any of the pope related tabs. It is done by editing the descr_strat.txt file and moving the rome settlement information to the slave faction and removing the papal states faction information. -Captain Winky
