I've fiddled a bit more with Template:Fictional Battles and put an example of it in use into the Sandbox page: http://www.twcenter.net/w/index.php?title=Sandbox&oldid=22137
You look like you're getting there but are confusing what needs to go on template page versus where its used. You define the boxes and headings on the template page and you use {{{example}}} to define a point on the template where there's a gap to put information in when the template is used. When you use it on an article page all you need is {{template_name|example=text here}}
If you just want to code the table on the article page each time and not use a template you don't need the {{{ }}} stuff within the table. It's a bit of a nightmare to figure out - everyone really just does it by finding something similar that's working and copying and altering it a bit... Try and do that to something that's working here, rather than on En Wikipedia though - if you try copying templates from Wikipedia you'll find they don't work properly because you're missing other sub-templates or bits of CSS.
