The sword has slightly higher attack than the spear so use alt+right click to have them use their swords in melee once their charge is completed. Because of it's enormous farming potential Sacred Band Cavalry can be made available quite early in the city of Carthage, but their very high building requirements mean they won't be available in many other cities until late in the game.
