Well disciplined, led by high-ranking officers and carrying large shields, royal pikemen are the bulwark of the Macedonian battle line.

Overview

Often deployed in the position of honour in a pike line (usually at the right hand end) thanks to their superior status, Macedonian royal pikemen (or hypaspists) are disciplined troops drawn from the higher echelons of society. The tough royal pikemen carry the shorter hoplite thrusting spear, and are well protected with their large round ‘argive’-pattern shields as well as leather armour. Other units can draw confidence from the presence of these proud warriors, which makes them a bulwark of many a Macedonian battle line. When close-quarter fighting starts they also carry short swords like other pikemen.

Details

Royal Pikemen are tough units with great stats, strong amour and large shields, a rarity among pikemen. They are disciplined, have high morale and their larger shields really help them survive much longer. This makes them a great anvil unit, as even enemies that get through their long pikes will find them difficult to take down. These are Macedon's best infantry by far, a considerable upgrade to Phalanx Pikemen. They still will struggle against the elite Legionaries and Sacred Band however.

They are quite expensive and unbelievably costly to keep. Never use these men as simple garrisons.
