Numidian Legionaries (RTW Unit)
Numidian Legionaries are local copies of Roman Legionaries, but lack the truly awesome discipline of the originals. This still makes them dangerous foes.
Overview
Numidian Legionaries are local copies of Roman Legionaries, but lack the truly awesome discipline of the originals. They have had training from Roman advisors, and this makes them the best trained of all Numidian soldiery. They cannot, however, use tactics like the tortoise (or testudo) when approaching enemy formations, but they do fight in the same fashion as the original Legionaries, first throwing heavy spears (pila) at the enemy and then closing for hand-to-hand combat.\n\nA combination of rugged upbringing and harsh training makes them reliable and slow to tire in combat: a Numidian force can be sure that these men will do their duty.
Details
These soldiers may look like Legionnaires, but they can't really compete with the real deal, particularly after the Marian Reforms. They are only about as strong as Principes and their morale is nowhere near as good. They are disciplined which helps them stay on the field, but their base morale is only about 4 compared with 10 for Roman Legionaries. They are Numidia's strongest melee Infantry however so using them against infantry while the Desert Infantry defend against cavalry is the key to Numidia's entire campaign. Use a lot of them if you are not going for a Cavalry army and make sure you build up a good general to keep their morale high.
They are tough enough to fight off lighter and medium enemy infantry without too much trouble. However an elite Infantry force of Greeks or Romans will usually outmatch them, and Chosen Swordsmen might as well.
The hardest part of using these troops is acquiring them. Numidia is very poor and an Army Barracks (and thus a large city) is needed to train them. Surviving until them is no mean feat, and they take 2 turns to train.
