Nile Spearmen (RTW Unit)
These well trained spearmen are the mainstay of many Egyptian armies, thanks to their all-round defensive abilities.
Overview
These well trained spearmen are the mainstay of many Egyptian armies, thanks to their all-round defensive abilities. They wear light padded armour - hardly surprising given the incredibly hot climate of home - and carry large shields. They do not carry secondary weapons at all, and rely entirely on their spears in combat. This means that they are best employed to hold a defensive position against cavalry, or as a rough phalanx to take on other infantry by 'push of pike' and weight of numbers.
These men are better trained than some other Egyptian forces, such as Nubian spearmen, and will hold more often as a result.
Details
Nile Spearmen are a decent mid tier unit the equivalent to the standard Hoplites of the Greek Cities but with a combat bonus in deserts. Nile Spearmen are good as a acceptable front line for Egypts armies and can continue this role well into the late campaign but will stuggle by then, their adequate strengths allows them to hold their own against most units in their range sauch as Roman Princeps, Carthaginian Libyan Spearmen, Barbaric Swordsmen and Numidian Desert Warriors just to name a few. Nile spearmen as mentioned will start to stuggle as the campaign goes on and other factions will start to recruit stronger units. Nile Spearmen despite being the Egyptian counterpart to Greek City Hoplites will lose to them even fighting in deserts does little to improve the odds, this can be primarily attributed to the weaker armor of the Nile Spearmen which makes them less likely to outlast units in combat. Overall while the Nile Spearmen are a better unit then Nubian Spearmen and can still have their uses into the late campaign they will struggle against stronger units and some of their contemporaries but overall still a decent unit to use.
