Drafting notes

These instructions are being mostly transplanted from Discord, however I believe there's a need to rewrite some of them for clarity and to reduce barrier to entry. I hadn't remembered how messy modding Empire manually can be so this process has room to improve.

The other issue is building required files inline into the article. Discord may not be the most reliable file host as they are slowly changing how that process works, so there may need to be a TWC downloads or moddb mirror linked alongside. Food for thought. I will revisit this page and add a bit more soon (hopefully) and the original instructions creator can step in with improvements etc. His discord server will also be linked here for utility. --Dismounted Feudal Knight (talk) 08:50, 8 November 2023 (MST)

Overview

Total War:Empire beta tested a multiplayer campaign to replace the previous hotseat mechanic. This beta was never made fully public, depending on keys to access which are nigh unattainable well over a decade after its release. The feature was effectively abandoned and was only realized in Total War:Napoleon in later entries.

However, there is a project which builds the multiplayer campaign into Empire and can be modified to serve any major mod. This effort is lead by Ludde96 primarily over Discord, and this page was created with his permission and collaboration.

Setting Up

A vanilla installation of Empire is advised for this. See subsections to install for specific mods.

Firstly you must clean up the installation to ensure there are no conflicts. To play with someone else, you must have a perfectly synced environment, using the exact same mod(s).

Cleaning up the vanilla game

Before doing this, back up your game directory if you have it modified in any way that you want to save. You can do this by right clicking the game in the sidebar and hitting Properties, then the backup option (see the FAQ for details including restore). You can also hit the settings icon to the right of the launch icon if you already have the game on screen in steam to reach the same menu. This is also how you can browse your files locally, including to ensure they're really gone after you've uninstalled or to back the game up with the "copy paste" method.

To reset without any conflicts:

  1. On steam, uninstall Empire: Total War.
  2. Open file explorer and visit %appdata% (click on the directory path, and put this in). If you aren't in Roaming already, open that folder. Then browse to The Creative Assembly/empire/ and delete the scripts folder.
  3. Launch Empire and then exit.
