Axemen are steadfast and aggressive warriors, the 'infantry of the line' for barbarian warlords.
Overview
Axemen are steadfast and aggressive warriors, the 'infantry of the line' for barbarian warlords. They are not very disciplined at times, as their sense of honour and bravery can make them eager to get into any fray, but they are uniformly superb fighters. They are equipped with good axes and small shields. Every warlord worth the name makes sure he has a couple of warbands of these hard men under his command.
Details
Axemen are essentially Swordsmen with a stronger attack and lower defense. They dish out a lot of pain, but their light amour and low defense often cause them to take casualties as fast as they dish them out against swordsmen or Hastati. Luckily they have sky high morale and are impetuous, so they wont be routing easily. Some armor upgrades are recommended for this unit since it will see plenty of the front lines. A few units of axemen are useful as strong, fast flank defenders for Germania's Spear Warbands
Axemen work very well with the Spear Warbands. While the enemy impales themselves on the hardy warbands, Axemen can flank and crush the enemies in short order.
