The Rise of the Samurai campaign is set 400 years before the original Shogun 2 campaign. It focuses on the Genpei War. The base game Total War: Shogun 2 is required to play the expansion.

The Rise of the Samurai pack adds;

- 4 new Hero units.

- 3 new naval special abilities.
