Greek Cavalry (RTW Unit)
Greek cavalry are fast moving horsemen armed with spears for maximum impact in a charge.
Overview
Greek cavalry are fast moving horsemen armed with spears for maximum impact in a charge. They are not heavily armoured, and do not have shields for protection, relying instead on the old maxim of 'speed is armour' for protection. As a result, they are best used as a hit-and-run force, rather than as soldiers who can indulge in hand-to-hand combat. That said, they are excellent for breaking up skirmishers, attacking lighter infantry such as missile troops and pursuing already broken enemies to prevent them rallying and rejoining a battle.
Details
Greek Cavalry are a Light Cavalry unit used by all the Hellenistic factions. They are unfortunately the weakest melee cavalry in Rome Total War. Despite coming from a level 2 stables, they will find themselves outclassed in most engagements.
No cavalry unit is useless in Rome Total War, and these men can still be used to harass light skirmishers and Archers, chase routing units and deliver the final blow to engaged and shaken enemy infantry. They can have a strength in numbers as well and their charge is acceptable. However they should not be used to charge any infantry from the front effective unless it is a very weak unit. In a fair fight the Medium and Heavy Cavalry of other factions will crush them. Their defense is particularly low.
They are the strongest melee cavalry for Greece and Thrace besides Generals Bodyguard, a very unfortunate situation. Macedon and the Seleucids both have much better Cavalry choices and should generally stick with those.
