The Saxons start with a number of rebel provinces nearby and no major power close to them allowing the creation of a strong homeland in Northern Germany.

The Saxon player can then choose between expanding Eastwards onto the steppes, attacking South-West along the Atlantic coast, or developing a navy and attacking Britain. Following the Eastern route is easier overall as there is more space to expand into and fewer powerful enemy factions. The Atlantic or British route mean fighting against the Western Roman Empire and is significantly more dangerous. The Saxons are unlikely to have the financial muscle to attempt more than one.
