There are twenty one factions in the Barbarian Invasion main campaign game.

Horde Factions
Hording is a new feature introduced with the Barbarian Invasion expansion. These factions have the ability to form hordes and will produce horde armies if you take their last city when they still have a general alive:
- Huns - starts game as a horde
- Goths
- Ostrogoths
- Sarmatians
- Vandals - starts game as a horde
- Franks
- Burgundii
- Lombardi
- Roxolani
- Slavs - emerge as a horde at a set date
Emergent Factions
These factions emerge during the course of play.
- Slavs - emerge as a horde at a set date
- Romano British - emerge when Roman provinces in Britain are lost
- Ostrogoths - emerge as a horde if Goths revolt
- Eastern Roman Rebels - Eastern Roman Empire cities and generals revolt to and from this faction
- Western Roman Rebels - Eastern Roman Empire cities and generals revolt to and from this faction
