Overview
Historically, the Batavian Republic was established as a puppet regime in the Netherlands by the French First Republic as a result of the defeat of the Republic of the United Netherlands in the wider Flanders Campaign seeking to remove Austria from the low countries. Unlike many invasions of neighbouring states by the rapidly expanding first republic, the Dutch generally welcomed the French incursion with many viewing the invading French armies as liberators.
Following the rise of the French Empire under Napoleon, the republic was eventually dissolved and replaced by the Kingdom of Holland which, while substantially bigger than its predecessor, continued to function merely as a subordinate vassal state to the French realm. Napoleon's brother and nephew (Louis and Louis II) served as first and last monarch of the kingdom respectively. However, following a series of incidents where the King sought to serve the interests of the Dutch people over the interests of French emperor, the kingdom was dissolved and integrated fully into France. This however did not last as the first defeat of Napoleon in 1813 led to the rise of an independent Dutch nation once again, the borders of which were enlarged significantly and consolidated through the Congress of Vienna.
