*'''New factions, Generals, and Units'''. By 363 AD Europe, North Africa, and Middle East had drastically changed. New "barbarian" tribes were migrating into Europe, the Sassanids had risen in Persia, and the Roman Empire had been split in two, and had even come to blows. All this is reflected in the hundreds of new units available.

*'''Loyalty attribute.''' This is added to all Roman Family Members, and measures their chance to rebel or be bribed.

There have been some notable features added to the gameplay of Barbarian Invasion, these include:
+
*'''Swimming.''' Many units can now swim, and can cross rivers without using a bridge or ford. This alters bridge battles significantly. A exhausted unit may drown when attempting to swim.

Ten new barbaric factions are added to the original game.

Religious factors are added in BI, three religions are used; Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Paganism.  If the population of your city doesn't agree with the official religion set by your leader or church building then you can experience a whole new realm of unrest problems.
+
*'''Recruitable Generals.''' All factions can now recruit generals, providing they have the required level of Stable. They essentially act as a Captain that can gain character traits and ancillaries.

Some of the new factions will only be seen when they emerge. They emerge when certain conditions are met. ie. When the Romans are removed from the British Isles, the Romano-British will appear to claim right to Briton.
+
*New traits and ancillaries. Three and a half centuries onwards from the end of Rome:Total War, family members now gain new traits (though old ones can still be gained). The most important is the ''Night Fighter'' trait, allowing a General to fight at night.

Loyalty factors are added to the game, Roman cities and generals may revolt to Roman rebel factions if their loyalty factor drops too low. The same goes for the Goths. If Gothic cities and generals revolt or rebel, they will turn to the Ostrogoths, a new emerging faction.

Night battles are another addition, perhaps slightly difficult to fight but great to look at with all your units carrying blazing torches to light their way.

Hording is a new attribute for factions in BI; you think you have destroyed the Roxolani by taking their last settlement?  Think again!

Shield walls and shiltroms replace the phalanx's of the earlier game, and some units can now swim to avoid the impasse created by bridge battles. Both the shield wall and shiltrom are defensive formations. Shield wall presents a strong wall of pointy metal weapons and shields. The shiltrom is like the phalanx, except the unit forms a circle with spears sticking out every where. It is very strong, but not good to counter missile troops, as the units cannot move in this formation.

Overview

The description from CA's web site says: "It's 363 AD and a seemingly unstoppable tide of barbarian invaders is massing on the borders of a fractured Roman Empire. Command huge armies of would-be Barbarian conquerors or take control of Roman armies in defense of the old empire. An expansion pack for the award-winning Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion places you 200 years after the original campaign, where an epic war to decide the fate of the world's grandest empire is now yours to control!"

Gameplay

See Rome: Total War and Expansions for game-play considerations common to Rome: Total War, Barbarian Invasion and Alexander.

Additional Features

  • Night battles. Generals can now pick up traits that allow them to fight at night, thereby granting allied armies bonus and conferring disadvantages on the enemy.
  • Emerging Factions. Some factions can emerge in the game as the result of revolts or historical events. For example, the Ostrogoths, Western Roman Rebels and Eastern Roman Rebels form if a settlement owned by the Goths, WRE or ERE rebels. The Slavs appear in-game in 410 AD, and the Romano-British emerge when all Roman-owned settlements are conquered by another faction.

New "barbarian" tribes were migrating into Europe, the Sassanids had risen in Persia, and the Roman Empire had been split in two, and had even come to blows. • Recruitable Generals. All factions can now recruit generals, providing they have the required level of Stable. They essentially act as a Captain that can gain character traits and ancillaries.

Factions

*See main article:Factions in BI

The factions in Barbarian Invasion are completely new, for the most part. There are still the Persian Empire, but in a different dynasty. There are still the romans, but instead of three families and a Senate, there are the Eastern and Western parts of the Roman Empire. These two factions are completely seperate, and will go to war against each other.
