About King Athelstan

The Name

The tale of how King Athelstan registered on the forum with precisely that name is a grand tale. He messed up the login to his original account, and thus settled on creating a new one. But he had to come up with a different name. Now, how would a young boy come up with something so creative? King Athelstan was a big fan of history, and at the time was reading Snorri Sturlasons Sagas of Norwegian kings. King Athelstan also had the great virtue of having the middle name Adelsten, a modernized version of Adalstein. Thus, he came across a namesake - King Håkon Adalsteinsfostre. He read about the king, and he sounded awesome. Adalsteinsfostre, translating to "Fostered by Athelstan", was indeed sent to grow up at the court of King Athelstan - And thus our hero read more about King Athelstan, and found his history intriguing. Being Half English, having the name of the first king of all of England and one of the greatest kings of Norway was a brilliant combination, a dream come true for a history-loving boy. And thus, the name King Athelstan was born, and a legend began

The Game

King Athelstan joined Gaming Staff in the early weeks of 2018, right in the middle of the Hotseat Drama, returning after a long absence. Upon finding the Hotseat Section in chaos, his old home, he immediately applied to Game Staff, and was quickly permitted. He played a key role on the reconciliation of the two sides, and for a long time he was the only Game Staff working on the general section, the largest. He archived old threads, pulled old ones back, restarted hotseats, got passwords spread around and helped the community flourish again. Since then the Hotseat Section has been thriving, and he continued his administrative duties with due diligence until the break of 2020, where he stepped down from an as active part of hotseating, though he still is involved there. He earned a gold chess piece for his servitude.

The Content

King Athelstan offered to take over running the Picture Competitions on the 19th of September 2018[2], and was running them since October 5th of the same year. A few belated months later he became Content Director, and consistantly ran the competitions for two years before retiring, leaving a boastful and proud legacy behind. However, his winning record in these are incredibly shoddy, which perhaps is why he sought to manage rather than win them and still look good.

He was also part of the TWC Media Hub[3], which he joined after reading m_1512's announcement calling for a revival.[4] King Athelstan has produced 1 video under the TWC banner[5], though more are to come. Hopefully. Some day. Maybe.

The TWC History

King Athelstan registered on Total War Center the 5th of September 2013. In the beginning, there was nothing but downloading a mod here and there. Then, he started talking, a bit here and there - Notably in The Third Age Total War mod section of Medieval 2, where he made a brief appearance the first episode of Ngugi's Total Warrior Graphic series, starring his old avatar. He also participated in the Who am I guessing games. Then he discovered Hotseating. He did not jump into a newbloods hotseat directed at newer players as he should have, but subsequently jumped into a hotseat with veteran players. Having no prior experience, and being quite bad at hotseating due to posessing a different mindset than required, he was subsequently smashed, battered and defeated. Something that tends to happen quite a lot to this day too... However, he slowly improved, and started administrating games too. He applied for Game Staff in 2016, and was nearly accepted, and told to come back in a few months. He just needed a bit more experience, but his enthusiasm was great. However, his life took a turn for the worse, and he had to take a long break from TWC, only to come back just in time for the Hotseat Drama as 2017 ended.

His Citizen application was launched on the 4th of October 2018, and King Athelstan reads through the application and looks at the vote results from time to time when he's feeling a bit low[6] Since then he's successfully patronized three people: 4zumi, Akarand CommodusIV, with more to come. He became involved in the Curia quickly after being patronized, and soon joined Aikanárs Curator team serving as assistant, helping out until StealthFox took over. In the 2020 Praefect election[7] King Athelstan stood as the only applicant, resulting in a crushing victory over Abstain, marking one step further on the road to overthrow Hader. I mean what. Nothing. Move along, citizen.
