Empire: Total War Turns 10 Years Old!

Empire: Total War was released on 3rd March, 2009. Empire was the 5th major release in the Total War Series and the first to feature 3D real time naval battles. The game is now sold as the Definitive Edition and includes the 5 previously released DLCs including the Warpath Campaign.

Empire includes more than 50 factions, although only 11 are initially playable. Five new Native American factions are added by the Warpath Campaign.




Empire: Total War Modding Ten Years On

Ten years after its release many Empire: Total War mods are still being developed and improved. A small selection of the ongoing works are described below:

The American Revolution Mod are planning to release a 10th Anniversary Edition. Version 3.0 is planned to include new units and a massive re-skin with new campaigns and features. They are currently looking for "a few good men" to help with 2d art and testing, apply here.

Imperial Destroyer (the only mod to-date to manage to turn wilderness areas of the campaign map into playable regions) released a new update v6.1 in January. For those who wish to adjust the mod settings a variety of separately downloadable gameplay options are provided in response to users suggestions, see the possibilities here

The War of 1812 have just released their version 1.2. The new release includes relocated cities, a fixed scenario, new unit icons, UK ships have marines and temporary officers (No more vanilla), missing equipment readded and a new launcher which makes the campaign finally playable! Imperial Splendour - Rise of the Republic had a major release last year and work is continuing apace on a v1.2 update. For anyone curious about work inside a modding team their News Thread gives a great insight into the work in progress, including the fine art of modelling a top hat in 3d, read all about it here.

Colonialism 1600 AD released an update for their 17th Century mod in March 2018. Mod leader Geronimo2006 is now also working on a sub-mod to cover the Nine Years War 1688-97, which is also known as the War of the Grand Alliance and the War of the League of Augsburg. Ottoman Total Overhaul released multiple updates last year and are now working towards a version 2.6.5 with optional music choices, rebalancing and unit changes. Despite the name the mod deals with much more than just the Ottoman Empire and includes campaign and battle AI improvements. Read about the numerous changes made since 2017 here

Total War: Three Kingdoms

Creative Assembly's next epic addition to the Total War franchise is set in ancient China in the Three Kingdoms period starting at 190 AD. Reviews so far have been intriguing with PCGamer describing it as 'ambitious, beautiful and confusing'.

Total War: Three Kingdoms will introduce two different modes of campaign play, a 'Classic' version based on the Records of the Three Kingdoms which aims for greater historical accuracy, and a new 'Romance Mode' based on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms which portrays generals and faction leaders as powerful heroes with special powers.

Generals and leaders seem set to be more important than in older titles, and the game will include the ability for the traits and abilities of up to three generals to be used in one army. Diplomacy has been re-worked and is intended to be a more important part of the game introducing concepts such as 'obligations, reciprocity, and trust'.

Total War: Three Kingdoms has been available for pre-order for some time. However the game launch has been postponed from March 7 to 23 May, 2019. See here for CA's explanation.


Members of the Total War Center have been gearing up for the release of Total War: Three Kingdoms with a badge competition to bring an Oriental theme to the forums. The winning set by Katsumoto includes this Citizens badge:

Also on TWC the Total War: Three Kingdoms discussion area includes a remarkably informative historical information thread, and a debate about whether to pre-order or not that has been going since February 2018.

Post of the Fortnight

The Post of the Fortnight Competition is a new feature on TWC, it is the place to see how the best debaters post and present their ideas and positions. The Competition aims to recognize the best posts and reward the authors with well-earned medals.


Dick Cheney who won the first ever PotF with Significance of Teutoburg Forest, has had another success with his recent tie for first place with Who was Alexander's greatest teacher? multiple candidates are discussed but perhaps the most interesting is:

Another winner with a military theme was Cyclops with Why was flanking so effective?, here's a taster:

Getting men onto a field to kill one another is no mean feat. You do it by bonding them socially, emotionally and militarily. Less centralized ("civilised") societies bring warriors to the field when each individual decides to come. Complex societies have conscription and other forms of coercion, material rewards, intangible rewards , religion and so on that allows masses to be mobilised and moved. Part of these systems is practicing in formation, and the line of battle is a very old and successful institution.

Three Kingdoms Teasers

Total War: Three Kingdoms will have an all-new spy system, find out more in this video.

Biographical and playstyle details have been released of the eleven legendary warlords you will be able to play as, including the female warrior Zheng Jiang described as "The Bandit Queen", "A fierce warrior and anarchist bandit, she lives to burn down the corrupt Han Dynasty". Read more here.

"A Hero's Journey" shows legendary hero Zhuge Liang wandering ancient China searching for a worthy master, the video showcases the varied landscape of the game's territory.

Thrones of Britannia - Steel & Statecraft

The Britannia Saga has recently had an update titled the Steel & Statecraft patch with an additional bug-fix issued on 14/1/2019. The patch focuses on improvements to Estates, Traits & Recruitment but also includes new Buildings and two new Settlements. The full patch notes can be found here. Discuss the patch on TWC here.

Rome: Total War!

Surprised to see good old RTW in the 'news'? No, it's not a misprint! Feral Interactive have released Rome: Total War for Android and iOS. Unfortunately, the mobile versions aren't currently moddable, so mod lovers may need to hold on to their old PC versions too. Discuss RTW on TWC here.

Warhammer II - Festag Beta
