Scotland has a very good Military. If you train castle units you get barbarian-like highlanders to do your bidding, with feudal knights and dismounted knights too. If you recruit from a town/city, you can recruit a lot of different spearmen types. Scotland has relatively good early and middle period units, but their late period technology is lacking.

Scotland in the beginning of the game does not have a great economy, so it would be wise to capture Dublin, upgrade it to large town and build silver mines. The British Isles do not have many available economic resources in comparison to other parts of the in-game world.

Scotland is very much an infantry focused faction. All of their unique units are on foot, and most are melee infantry. Most of their Infantry uses swords or axes, but they also have a number of useful Pike units, including the very strong Noble Pikemen, who are also available in Cities as well as Castles. Their swordsmen are also very good; particularly the Noble Swordsmen. Their early cavalry is mostly the standard Western European cavalry, but stops advancing after Feudal Knights. Fortunately, though, like all other Catholics in the base game they are able to recruit unique Crusader Order Cavalry from guilds. Their archers are mediocre and short ranged, but alright in a melee. They have no access to Gunners but do have a decent artillery selection. Overall, Scotland has a rather basic roster, but it does have some strong troops and good early game units, especially infantry.
