The story of jp's short but eventful time at TWC
Beginnings
After joining in February 2006 I became a regular of the Political Mudpit where I was noticed by a few members as being potential Civitate material. My mainly conservative views were shared by members such as Carach and the Black Prince, while I often debated agaisnt Shyam Popat and Ozymandias. Strangely the 2 people who influenced my first 2 months on TWC the most were Shyam and Carach, coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum. I was eventually patronised by Ummon a month after joining, I joined the ranks of the Curia just before the April Fools Joke on the members. During this period I became friendly with imb39 after he conned me into believing that Crandar really had returned (Damn him!). When Ummon left the site in May I transferred patronage to imb39 and haven't looked back.
Summer
After being a member of both the CoP and CdeC in the Summer of 2006 I asked to be entered into some moderator elections that may take place while I was on holiday. Upon returning from holiday I found I was in an election and many had thought I had left due to my inactivity. After the ensuing crisis of alleged widespread use of PM's to canvass for votes I was appointed a Moderator along with Evariste and Seleukos. With the Curia now attacking me for being appointed rather than elected I set about trying to be a good moderator, something which I hope I achieved with my 'less is more' mantra. My moderating style is laid back and Infractions are only issued very rarely, usually for personal attacks.
The Depression
Staff
October was the month of the Staff Rebellion against Archer. I knew something was up when Tac resigned. Later I found out Archer had removed him due to him supposedly reading PM's on MYSQL however I am not sure of the factuality of this. I was invited to sign a letter which called for the removal of Archer and was to be posted in staff with the signatures. It was a great letter really and argued not against Archer as a person but his lack of leadership and communication skills. The letter called for his resignation from Imperator to either Hex or Staff or the general membership. A few days later I came online to find TWC in chaos yet again. Archer had just demoted everyone and promoted HG to Hex (who saw some unfavourable things about him which had some bigger consequences for TWC down the line) along with Belisarius to Admin. Eventually after much arguing everyone got back in Staff and HG and Belisarius (who eventually returned and has since become Content Manager) left TWC. Hex became a supposed council of equals and everyone was happy (well we'll see about that later on).
The Ongoing Saga of Selling the Site
TWC was going fine, MTW2 was just out, the moderation was perfect, the debates were going well and the mods were just appearing. Then I asked General Sun if he knew TWC was up for sale (which was commonish knowledge at the time) in passing conversation. He was amazed and we soon had Evariste and Professor420 in our conversation. In my other msn window was imb39, I asked him if he was interested in our plan to buy the site and he joined the conversation 5 minutes later and offered to buy the site outright. After approaching Ogre and finding out about the pitiful zboard offer we were ecstatic, but worried at how far into the deal ON were. The long wait for Ogre to decide began and during this time Besim reappeared at TWC...
Besim
At first we thought this was good, but the longer he stayed the more he wanted to interfere in things he did not understand. For more details on Besim's reasons for meddling in TWC, destabilising the site and hindering the sale to us please see Of the Exile. Then I came on TWC one morning to find:
- A New Skin that was Pink
- Half of Hex demoted
- The Curia deleted (well removed from view)
- All Civitates and Patricians demoted
I immediately went on msn and started talking to Besim, inviting all the other staff on msn to the conversation. We hammered out some compromises such as getting the Curia back and imb39 (who had resigned the previous week), Lusted (who had been demoted) and I were given access to the Admin Control Panel to fix the ranks. However Besim did not give us the required access so it was pointless, and I just ended up reading Hex for half an hour. Then Professor420 was banned, I told Besim he could not just do that at TWC, it was not how we operated by threatening members and banning them. He then threatened to ban me for dissenting! This was a big mistake on his part as I was now dead set against him. I immediately added Prof's Of the Exile article to my Signature in the now infamous 'The Truth' style and encouraged others to do so. I opened a thread polling the members on what they thought of Besim (Link) however he removed the poll and added it to this thread (Link) the results are obvious to see. After some flames and trolls between various members (me included I'm sorry to say) and network administrators Besim caved in and gave control of TWC back to Hex. HG reappeared during this episode, on the side of Besim, and the plotting of the next and final crisis is said to have begun immediately after the fall of Besim...
Honor&Glory
One Tuesday in January I was visiting TWC. It was 6 weeks since Besim and my activity had declined sharply. Not only had I been rejected by the Curia in the CDC elections and by certain others, people were saying I had tried to 'destroy the site' and after Ogre said he wasn't going to sell TWC I found logging on a chore, let alone moderating or posting. I felt slightly betrayed and bitter during this time, I'd helped get rid of an 'idiot' (to put it nicely) and been snubbed by the people it had helped. Then I refeshed the main TWC Index and suddenly the Staff Forum and Curia were gone and to my utter amazement Richard the Lionheart had a bold purple name. On joinng the thread in the Suggestus I thought this was a joke, surely the most hated person on TWC was not really an admin, how wrong I was. As more facts emerged we realised this was not a joke.
The next day I logged on in the morning to see if there were any developments. I found half the forum banned and in disgust I posted something about 'HG loving Ogre' (in harsher terms). When gigagaia saw he told me to edit it out quickly as we didn't want everyone banned. So I quickly edited it and then imb39 presented me with a perfect snipe at HG, asking what his vision for the future was. You can see my reply to imb's post in the 'Quotes' section below, I was banned immediately.
New Site
On the Wednesday night it was decided a new site was to be created to rival TWC. Simetrical set this up and Lusted/imb39 began the organisation of such a move. Luckily Simetrical had made a database backup quickly before he lost his admin powers, meaning the transition would be easy. The name Total War Horde was chosen at first with an aim of buying Total War Zone and then moving to that in the not too distnat future. Lusted organised for about half the mods at TWC to leave there altogether and join our forum, while the rest were going to maintain a presence at both.
Dispair and Triumph
People were being banned and unbanned and chaos reigned over the forums. Not just the Curia and staff but all the members were in revolt. The plan for the new forum was going smoothly until we hit legality issues with the database. In another sneaky trick Spirix registered TWH.com and put a redirect to TWC there to try and confuse people in finding the new site. Things were going down hill. With HG in charge at TWC and legality problems with using the TWC database for the new site our plans stalled. Forum life was going back to normal and this did much good for HG's cause as a stable TWC meant he had won in taking over the forum and imposing his will over it. However when Archer and Meiyogen put us on a global ignore list known as 'Coventry' they amde a big mistake. TWC began to revolt again and the spamming of the forums began as Ozymandias and I incited people to spam the forum with the link to Archer's Plot. Then people began to be IP banned and in conjunction with imb39 I was given permission to spam the link to the new forum. Using the account mafiaboss I opened 10 thread each containing the link to the new forum, they were soon deleted, but people had seen the link and soon began to spam it too. Satisfied TWC was at it's knees and knowing imb39 had an important msn meeting coming up with Ogre than night I went to bed. On waking up in the morning TWC was ours, with the chance to control and influence it's future.
The New Golden Age
Upon imb39 buying the site, it was clear this was to be the new Golden Era of TWC. So far this prediction has not been at all wrong.
Quotes
ON have given birth to a new doctrine in running a forum: 'stupidity' (In response to HG being appointed Administrator of TWC)
Offering moderating advice to someone sorely lacking in that field does not count as a rebellion. (Source) (In response to HG closing his threads on the moderating under the new regime)
Criticisms
He has received one complaint about his moderating that was upheld, details can be found here. He apologised for the incident. Some have criticised him for being too 'spammy', a claim jp does not disagree with. However jp believes there is a time for light-heartedness and a time for seriousness, but sometimes the lines get blurred.
