Moderators form the body which performs the vast majority of day-to-day front-line moderation. The  Moderators also have a large input into general forum policy and initiatives, although the final decisions will usually rest with the Senior Staff of the Hexagon Council. Moderators are appointed to their position following a general vote by all Moderators and Administrators. In early 2010, the distinction between Global Moderators and Juniors (formerly known as Quaestors) was removed. In mid 2010, the distinction between Senior Moderators and Junior Moderators was removed, this was combined into the Moderation staff and their name was recoloured blue.
+
Moderators ensure the Terms of Service are followed, advise the Hexagon Council (site administrators) in policy and initiative, and occasionally perform upkeep when local moderation is not available (with respect to the original content and poster). Members in good standing can volunteer and will join the team if approved by a general vote of Moderators and Administrators.

Moderation Mentors have been around since 2006, any good experienced moderator becomes a mentor for a new moderator. This process was made even more prominent in Mid 2010 when the Senior Moderator group was removed and their last members made official 'Moderation Mentors'. These members of staff are responsible for appointing new Moderation Mentors and they also liase with Hex and again mentor new and junior moderators.
+
Most Moderators have global access and can equally respond to questions and issues. If nothing else they can point you in the right direction if they can't resolve it themselves. The department is headed by the Moderation Overseer (the branch administrator), who can address more complicated questions and issues.

Global Moderators are Moderators who have moderating powers over most forums on TWC. While regular Moderators usually only moderate one forum or set of forums (e.g. the M2TW forums), Global Moderators are trusted with moderating powers in most forums. They are chosen from existing Moderators and share a badge with other Moderators.
+
Local moderators are not part of the site staff - they maintain stickies for their forum and keep it tidy. They are the best contact for local questions, but conduct issues, spam and so forth should go to site moderation.

Moderators are now rewarded for extended periods of service to staff with the Moderator's Mace. Those that have served for a period of three months or more become eligible for a Bronze Mace, those that serve for a period of six months or more become eligible for  a Silver Mace, and those that have served for a period of time in excess of a year become eligible for the Gold Mace. There are other awards for longer periods of service. A suitable level of activity is also required, the maces are not given simply for time served.
+
Moderators are awarded for their service with the Moderator's Mace. They are awarded based on time served and contributions to the department. Note that in the past, maces were given directly for time served (three months, six months etc per level). In pre-2010 days, the gold mace was the highest that could be reached. More were added as service times became much longer.
However maces may be awarded to moderators sooner than the aforementioned time thresholds, at the discretion of the Administration, as rewards for outstanding performance.

The Senior Moderators of the Total War Center (formerly known as Strategoi) were a group of more experienced Moderators who overviewed day-to-day moderation until the rank was abolished in June of 2010. They were referred to as the "Strategoi" and could be identified by their dark red usernames and/or the following badge:

The Senior Moderators had a large input into general forum policy and initiatives, as well as appointing new moderators. They also used to act as mentors for Moderators in order to make sure they met certain requirements and were carrying out their job with precision. Nowadays, Moderation Mentors are responsible for mentoring instead. The other previous responsibilities of the Senior Moderators are now handled by all Moderators or the Administrators.

In the earliest days, the global moderators, who were known as "praetors", were colored green. At around 2010, following a large reform of the system (including the addition of emeritus, and the streamlining of roles), this changed to navy blue– a color which may still be seen in older moderation posts from the 2010s and early 2020s. The color was used until mid 2024, when the Hexagon Council authorized a change to green. Green was used by modding staff for a time, but by the time of this change it had long fallen out of use.

The Urbanis Legio rank was a moderator rank, comprised of members that moderated only a small section of a forum, roughly equivalent to a Local Moderator today. They were the front line moderators. This rank was part of the Urbanis Legio/Quaestor/Praetor/Consul/Imperator system. An Amendment abolished the Urbanis Legio rank and combined it with the Quaestor rank in 2006.

Overview

Moderators ensure the Terms of Service are followed, advise the Hexagon Council (site administrators) in policy and initiative, and occasionally perform upkeep when local moderation is not available (with respect to the original content and poster). Members in good standing can volunteer and will join the team if approved by a general vote of Moderators and Administrators.

Most Moderators have global access and can equally respond to questions and issues. If nothing else they can point you in the right direction if they can't resolve it themselves. Moderation was once divided into several roles and multiple colors (an abridged visual history of colors and names can be found at Badges). This has streamlined over time. In the earliest days, the global moderators, who were known as "praetors", were colored green. At around 2010, following a large reform of the system (including the addition of emeritus, and the streamlining of roles), this changed to navy blue– a color which may still be seen in older moderation posts from the 2010s and early 2020s.
