Overview
Moderators ensure the Terms of Service are followed, update and maintain information in various sections, and advise the Hexagon Council in policy and initiative. Members in good standing can volunteer and will be added if approved by a general vote of Moderators and Administrators.
While some moderators are more senior than others and specialize in different areas, most Moderators have global access and can equally respond to questions and issues. Depending on the section, reports and issues may be handled locally by the relevant staff or the administration directly.
Moderation should not be confused with local moderators, who are not a united structure and do not enforce the Terms of Service and cannot hand out notes or infractions. When available however, they should be contacted to update local information (ie, pins). If they aren't present or haven't been available for a long time (ie, last logged in last year), feel free to escalate.
If a particular message is an issue, you can use the report feature. Otherwise, all moderators should be open to private messages. If you have a particularly sensitive request, you may wish to contact the Moderation Overseer directly or any other Administrator. If you aren't registered or want to contact the Administration in general, you can use the site contact form.
Present Membership
The current Moderators and Moderation Overseers are shown below:
For general administrative issues you can also contact any administrator. You may wish to check their recent activity before messaging for best response, or use the aforementioned contact form.
Moderator Emeritus
Moderator Emeritus are former moderators who have left office but can participate in Moderation affairs as advisors, by the discretion of the administration. The rank was created in mid 2010.

Moderator's Mace
Moderators are awarded for their service with the Moderator's Mace. They are awarded based on time served and contributions to the department. Note that in the past, maces were given directly for time served (three months, six months etc per level). In pre 2010 days the Gold mace was the highest that could be reached. More were added as service times became much longer.

History
Moderation was once divided into several roles and multiple colors (an abridged visual history of colors and names can be found at Badges). This distinction has streamlined over time and Moderation has come to be consistently colored dark blue, though portions of historic roles continue to exist today.
Senior Moderators
The Senior Moderators of the Total War Center (formerly known as Strategoi) were a group of more experienced Moderators who oversaw day-to-day moderation until the rank was abolished in June of 2010. They were referred to as the "Strategoi" and could be identified by their dark red usernames and/or the following badge:
The Senior Moderators had a large input into general forum policy and initiatives, as well as appointing new moderators. They also used to act as mentors for Moderators in order to make sure they met certain requirements and were carrying out their job with precision. When the role was abolished, the role of Senior Moderator was converted to Moderation Mentor to onboard new moderators. Other functions were dispersed across Moderation Staff or made part of the Administration or Overseers exclusively.
Junior Moderators
Junior Moderators (formerly known as Quaestors) were new or regional moderators who only managed certain forums (ie, the Medieval 2 section). They were counterparts to the Senior Moderator distinction above. In the 2010 reforms the Junior Moderators simply became a part of the wider Moderation Staff; still assigned to certain forums, but in larger portions. Today the most moderators have a very wide reach over the forums, and seniority is only a matter of who is experienced and who has been recently onboarded.
Urbanis Legio
The Urbanis Legio rank was a moderator rank that had very limited reach in the Staff structure, moderating only very small areas. They were the front line, with all wider issues escalated through the chain of command: Urbanis Legio, Quaestor, Praetor (global mods/Hex), Consul (admins/Hex) and Imperator, the owner/top admin. In 2006, Urbanis Legio was merged with Quaestor by an amendment in the Curia. All Hex eventually became admins and the lower ranks became the general Moderation staff as we know it.
Urbanis Legio was equivalent to Local Moderators of today, who are not part of the Moderation Staff and maintain the layout of their local forum (typically hosted mods). Certain staff can be considered 'local moderators' of their fields.
