One possible strategy with Greece is to abandon Syracuse at the beginning of game and concentrate on Macedon. When Macedon are driven from Greece it is possible to build your military and challenge the Brutii and Rome.

However, it can build strong troops faster than other provinces and starts with stone walls, which can easily hold off enemies at bay. This is a more unconventional strategy, but it allows teh conquering of Italy faster.

Greek General's Bodyguard.

The Greek Cities are one of the playable factions in Rome: Total War. They can be played after successfully completing a campaign as a Roman faction or if unlocked by modding / cheats.

Game Play

Greeks have many powerful hoplites. They are threatened by the Macedonians soon after the start of the game. The armies of Greece are somewhat old-fashioned, and are built around a core of heavy phalanxes. At the beginning of the game, they are threatened by the Macedonians, and most of their cities can only produce weak militia hoplites. However, the Greeks have a great potential of becoming rich! With money, they can bribe Macedonian armies, most of which join the Greeks in their entirety. The same thing applies to fighting against Thrace and the Seleucid Empire. Also, their position in the middle of the map leaves them somewhat exposed to naval invasions by Egypt, Carthage, and later the Romans. A powerful fleet and hihg-level arracks are needed. Once the Greeks begin producing armored hoplites, however, it becomes a lot easier from there.

Starting Position

Greeks start with divided settlements. They own the following settlements: Thermon in Aetolia Sparta in the Pelopponese Rhodes on Rhodes Syracuse on Sicily Pergamum in Asia Minor They are bordered by the Scipii and Carthage on Sicily , Macedon in Greece and Seleucids in Asia Minor.

Their cities are:

  • Sparta: Capital city of Greece famous for its Spartan hoplites who can be trained only here and on Syracuse
  • Thermon: Small city in Greece , Thermon can soon be under threat from either Macedon or Brutii.
  • Pergamum: City in Asia Minor, Pergamum is expected to soon be under threat by People Of Pontus.Next to attack will be the Seleucids.
  • Syracuse: The Greeks cities province on Sicily, is under threat from the House of Scipii from the beginning of the game. If you manage to hold the Scipii off, be certain that the Carthaginians will attack you later. Spartan hoplites can be recruited this province.
  • Rhodes: Famous for its Rhodian slingers and Colossus, this island city is wealthy with a gold mine and is often safe from AI attacks.

Win Conditions

  • Long Campaign: Hold 50 provinces including Rome
  • Short Campaign: Hold 15 provinces and outlive or destroy both Macedon and Thrace

Units

Units are mostly consisted of phalanxes. Their defensive capabilities are high and are trained to use phalanx. Their cost varies from cheap (militia hoplites, hoplites) to expensive (Spartan hoplites, armoured hoplites). They have some missile and cavalry support.

Unique Units

Spartan Hoplites: Spartan Hoplites are perfect soldiers trained from youth to be nothing but soldiers. They can be trained only in cities of Sparta and Syracuse. They have very high attack second only to Chosen Axemen, although their defence is surprisingly low. They also have huge morale and are one of the best units in RTW.

Armoured Hoplites: A much tougher version of normal Hoplites, Armoured Hoplites are second only to Spartan Hoplites in the Greek factions.
