All of the Roman factions share the same unit roster. The Roman factions are unique, however, in that once you construct an Imperial Palace in any of your Italian cities you will receive a message informing you that the Marian reforms have taken place. The Marian Reforms introduce a more powerful roster of heavy infantry units (such as the Legionary Cohort), which replace your older-style legions. Any older units will not be automatically replaced, they will simply continue to exist, but you are not able to train any more.
+
The Roman factions all have a very strong roster. Before the Marian Reforms they are an Infantry focused faction with limited cavalry and some archer and javelin support along with strong siege weapons. They have good infantry armed with big shields, Pila, which are heavy javelins, and a gladius, a short sword. They also get a strong Spear unit, the Triarii.

The Marian Reforms happen when a Roman faction controls a Huge City somewhere in Italy besides Rome. After the reforms they lose access to their old roster and get a heavily improved new roster. Any older units will not be automatically replaced, they will continue to exist, but you are not able to train any more or retrain them. After the Reforms they are still Infantry focused, but have much better core and support troops. Their late roster has extremely strong heavy infantry, among the best in the game, units such as Legionary Cohort, Praetorian Cohort and Urban Cohort. These men can overpower virtually any infantry opposition, and can form a tourtoise formation that makes them practically immune to arrow fire. They also have some excellent cavalry options that are only defeated by the ultra heavy Cataphract Cavalry from the East. Both their light cavalry and heavy cavalry are very strong. They get a very solid long range archer unit as well, the Archer Auxilia. Their only weaknesses are that their Spearmen, Auxilia, are not the best by a longshot and that they have limited ranged cavalry, only Cavalry Auxilia who are armed with javelins. Despite these slight drawbacks the Romans after the Marian Reforms are certainly one of the strongest rosters in the game.

However, Arcani only have "good morale" as opposed to the much stronger gladiator units who have "excellent morale", and should not be used in multiplayer battles, as Arcani are not cost-effective units.

If you use urban cohorts for flanking actions you will win against any phalanx unit.
From the front you dont use their full potential.

From the front against you dont use their full potential.
The drawback is that they are vey expensive and you might become outnumbered if you bring Urbans on masse.
+
Urbans are so strong that when they are upgraded that they can counter almost any infantry in a head on fight.
You will also sacrifise cavalry and missile unit uppgrades because of the cost.

And when attacking enemy flanks or the enemy rear, they are even more deadly!

They also inspire other units to stand firm longer and they are stronger than most units.
+
They also inspire other units to stand firm longer they have also more men this unit is ideal pila fodder in loose formation.

+
The reason they are ideal pila fodder is because they are ordinary legionaries not urbans or preatorian cohort.
This unit will have a numerical advantage against any Hellenistic infantry unit if you know how to controll their pila fire.
+
However the pila is still deadly and you can kill better men with lesser men. First cohorts are notable for the fact that they carry a legionary eagle, which gives a morale bonus to any surrounding friendly units. This bonus can be valuable when fighting morale-damaging unit factions, such as the chariot factions, or germania.

Bring this unit to the battlefield but dont do to many uppgrades it is the cavalry that is the desisive arm in your army.

== Best roman multiplayer army by Andre Lemgard ==

Remember that the strenght of a roman army is its flexibility and everyone must admit that every faction fights in a diffrent way.

Hellenistic factions like Macedon Selucid empire relies on hammer and anvil strikes.
+
'''Praetorian cavalry''' Praetorian cavalry are the best roman cavalry available. These units can take on almost any other cavalry unit in the game other than the superior cataphracts.
 +
When they have infantry cohorts in support they are almost invincible in a 1 vs 1 head on cavalry fight.

Babarian factions relies on morale benefits and flanking actions with its infantry being the hammer and cavalry as the anvil on the flanks.
+
However, flanking actions kill and rout the enemy cav faster so it is advisable to not select all cav units you have, and click on 1 unit, because if your opponent holds back and flanks you, that will put you in trouble.

Roman factions has one key advantage and that they have strong archers strong infantry and strong cavalry that is also well protected of course i am talking about the late roman army.
+
'''Praetorian cohort''' Praetorian cohorts are almost as strong as urban cohorts, with almost the same pila damage as urbans; use this unit to kill legionary first cohorts or use them to exchange pila with opposing urban cohorts, saving your own urban cohorts, giving you superior infantry quality compared to the other roman player.
And this is what stands out compared with the other factions.

The best infantry in a multiplayer is not Urbans but Legionary first cohorts!
+
==Strategy Guide ==
Yes 1 on 1 Urbans are better but the fact that legionary fist cohort has more men and more firepower than the Urbans and this will be a huge advantage against Hellenistic infantry and these first cohorts will inspire eachother to higher deeds of bravery.

Because after the first controlled volley of pila you have numerical superiority.
+

Before you throw the second volley press halt and then controll the pila fire once again.

The reason is simple once close combat has begun enemy troops will no longer be prepared for missile fire this volley will case gaps that your infantry can exploit.

Best missile unit is Archer Auxillria well protected longer range and a better punsh than Cretan archers of the macedonians and Greek cities.
+
Occupy small towns enslave large towns.

Let them fire at will while your infantry advances but then hold fire and target the enemy cavalry.
+
Have cheap garrisons 4 town watch.
Hellenistic faction relies on its cavalry to make the enemy rout sence the fhalanx is inflexible and once you out flank the enemy fhalanx unit with an other unit once the target enemy infantry unit is engaged from the front you will win.
+
be aggressive with the army you have by in the beginning combine all experienced troops into 1 army and then go for Gaul!

As I already said Legionary first cohorts have more men and cover more ground as a result fewer units of infantry can pin more enemy fhalanx units if you while you are advancing gradually stretch your infantry to only 3 line deep formation and rember never place infantry melee units behind one another.
+
Make sure to have a governor in every town and to develop your trade before you go to war.

Focus on winning the battle from the start and never have reserves because the enemy will use all of his troops at once and he will have more men fighting at once than you if you keep infantry reserves.
+
Be patient and build up your economy recruit peasants from Ariminum and disband them in Arretium to speed up your development and get access to better troops.
You dont want that do you?

Best heavy cavalry unit is the Generals bodyguard but they are not ment to fight head on.
+
Your early army should consist off 2 familymembers they are a lot stronger than equites and retrain themself for free!
Your main heavy cavalry should be Legionary cavalry to pin the enemy cavalry from the front while the bodyguard strike at the rear.

Focus your upgrades at the cavalry because they are more mobile than infanty.
+
Lots of Hastati and remember Velites can also fight well in melee if they attack the flank or you can use them as distraction.
If you crush the Hellenistic cavalry you will win.

Hellenistic infantry are only good from the front where their 5 rows can fight at once.

From the front Hellenistic infanty will win against legionaries.

So flank their infantry with a couple of cohorts if you can and support them with cavalry and archers.
+
Later when the Marius reform arrives replace your infantry with legionary cohorts and introduce archers and when available heavy cavalry and a few artillery pieces
Use combined arms and never rely on upgraded infantry alone.

Now bring victory and glory to Rome!

Julii (RTW Faction)
Julii Faction Symbol-Vanilla.png
Name: House of Julii
From Game: Rome: Total War
Culture: Roman
Playable:

The Julii are one of the three playable factions in Rome: Total War that are playable from the beginning (the other two being the other Roman Houses, the Brutii and Scipii).

Gameplay

Being one of the three Roman families, the House of the Julii will receive missions from the Senate, and will be forced to deal with the consequences of not completing them.

At a certain point during the game, the Senate will demand that your faction leader kill themself. If you accept their demand, the heir will become the faction leader and the process will be renewed several years later. If you refuse, you will initiate the Civil War, a gameplay mechanic unique to the Roman factions. It should be noted that, once your popularity with the people is high enough, you can simply initiate the Civil War by attacking another Roman faction. Also, if you are playing as another faction the Civil War will not take place.

Starting Position

Julii Starting Position (Click to enlarge)

The Julii are originally based in northern Italy. They hold two settlements, Ariminium and Arretium (their capital city).

Victory Conditions

  • Long Campaign: Hold 50 provinces including Rome.
  • Short Campaign: Hold 15 provinces and outlast or destroy Gauls.

Units

House of Julii General's Bodyguard.

In multiplayer battles the Romans can mix pre-Marian and post-Marian troops at will.

Unique Units

Samnite Gladiators: Every Roman faction has its own unique type of gladiator. Samnite Gladiators are can be recruited once you build an Amphitheatre in a settlement.

Arcani: The Arcani are a unit unique to the Julii. These units are, in effect, "roman ninjas". They are able to hide anywhere on the battlefield and can have a frightening effect on enemy units. They are also powerful warriors, though units of Arcani include very few soldiers, as a result. However, Arcani only have "good morale" as opposed to the much stronger gladiator units who have "excellent morale", and should not be used in multiplayer battles, as Arcani are not cost-effective units.

Urban cohorts: They are the strongest sword unit in the game with great defense and stamina. If you use urban cohorts for flanking actions you will win against any phalanx unit. From the front against you dont use their full potential. Urbans are so strong that when they are upgraded that they can counter almost any infantry in a head on fight.

And when attacking enemy flanks or the enemy rear, they are even more deadly!

Legionary first cohorts:These cohorts bring more men to the battlefield than the other cohorts and as a result have higher firepower punch than the other cohorts. They also inspire other units to stand firm longer they have also more men this unit is ideal pila fodder in loose formation. The reason they are ideal pila fodder is because they are ordinary legionaries not urbans or preatorian cohort.

Praetorian cavalry Praetorian cavalry are the best roman cavalry available. These units can take on almost any other cavalry unit in the game other than the superior cataphracts. When they have infantry cohorts in support they are almost invincible in a 1 vs 1 head on cavalry fight.

However, flanking actions kill and rout the enemy cav faster so it is advisable to not select all cav units you have, and click on 1 unit, because if your opponent holds back and flanks you, that will put you in trouble.

Praetorian cohort Praetorian cohorts are almost as strong as urban cohorts, with almost the same pila damage as urbans; use this unit to kill legionary first cohorts or use them to exchange pila with opposing urban cohorts, saving your own urban cohorts, giving you superior infantry quality compared to the other roman player.
